“Even before a word is on my tongue, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.”

Psalm 139:4 “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even

there thy hand shall lead me, and they right hand shall hold me.” Psalm 139:19

“Even the hairs on your head are numbered.” Matthew 10:30

I happened to pick up and glance through one of my prayer journals this morning. The first entry was dated September 15, 2004. I didn’t recognize the name nor did I remem-ber the situation. It may have been a person from the Northern Great Lakes Synod prayer page. She may have been a person from the community. I don’t recall. I went through the pages. Reading the names and the prayer concerns. I read the prayers of thanksgiving. Again, many were stories I couldn’t remember. The names in that jour-nal referenced the stories of countless people. There were stories of joy and stories of heartache. Stories of lives that have ended and stories of lives that have unfolded in ways unknown to me. One thing that came to mind as I reflected on the names in that journal is that our lives touch and are touched by so many people if even for the briefest of moments. My mind swirls with the memories of those I’ve known throughout the school years. Then, I can add those I’ve met being out and about in the world- parades and carnivals and fire-work displays. Add to that those I met as my family vacationed in North Dakota, or on our houseboat vacation in northern Minnesota or when we travelled to Illinois. Add to that all those I have met throughout my years of ministry. The list of places I’ve been and situations I’ve been in are countless. It’s no wonder I can’t remember everyone I’ve meet nor can I remember their stories. What about you? Who are the people that have touched your life- even for the briefest of moments? Whose stories have you heard? Who have you cried with? Who have you celebrated with? Even as you try to recall the names and faces of the people you have encountered throughout your life, you will not be able to remember them all. What stood out the most, however, is that there is One who does remember all these names and all these stories. There is one who remembers every prayer- spoken and unspoken. There is one who recalls every tear and every burst of laughter. God knows and remembers it all. Isn’t it amazing? It is beyond our comprehension. So, in these moments of remembrance and awe- I stop, to cherish the memories and to worship the One who has been there in and through it all. I give thanks to God who remembers us and knows us right well. Blessings on your journey,

Pastor Barb

MT. MORRIS WELCA—BIBLE STUDY

The group’s Bible Study is from the Gather

Magazine. A leader guide will be included in

the magazine. The cost of one year/10 issues is

$19.95. You can order on-line at

www.gathermagazine.org or get more infor-

mation there.

Fall 2017: The Apostles' Creed In “The Apostles’ Creed,” Bible study author Julia Sey-mour, pastor at Lutheran Church of Hope, Anchorage, Alaska, writes: “Beyond preferences or evenly deeply held convictions, the theological underpinnings of a reli-gious community are the structure for teaching, preach-ing and action. For our life of faith together, creeds are more than just words, they are vessels for carrying one another through doubt, joy, and sorrow.”

Session titles are:

Session 1: I believe in God… THUR. SEPTEMBER 7, 2017

The Apostles' Creed is one of the oldest unifying symbols of Christianity. Groups of early Christians needed a tool for teaching and evangelism that explained the basics of the faith. The Apostles’ Creed shaped their baptismal training, blessing in dying and how communities of faith defined themselves in faithful union. The creed has three parts or articles. The first article talks about God, the Holy Creator and Parent of all things. We’ll explore what the Apostles’ Creed says about God—and what it leaves undefined—as well as how this stirs our holy im-agination. Session 2: I believe in Jesus Christ… THUR. OCTOBER 5, 2017

In Scripture, Jesus is called the Messiah, the Son of God, a teacher, a healer, the pioneer of our faith, the rock of our salvation, Son of Man and other titles. In the Apostles' Creed, Jesus' life and ministry is briefly summed up. Jesus is described as God’s only Son and our Lord—one who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born by the Virgin, who suffered under Pilate, who was crucified, died and was buried. The creed is a definition of the work of the Father, Son and Spirit, yet there is also full-ness to being followers in the Way of Christ that is not described in the creed. Why is the description of Jesus, the mediator of our salvation, so spare? How have the words of the creed drawn a circle around acceptable beliefs regarding Jesus?

NOVEMBER 11 (SATURDAY) (No Bible Study this month) General WELCA Meeting—Election of Officers 1:30 PM

Session 3: I believe in the Holy Spirit…. THUR. DECEMBER 7, 2017 In the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is revealed not through characterization, but through the power of the Spir-it in action. How do we understand the communion of saints, forgiveness, resurrection, the church and all that will be, as the revelatory work of the Holy Spirit? As part of the Trinity, the Spirit carries the same weight as the Father and the Son, yet many of us are drawn to one part of the Trinity more than others. How can we use the creed to perceive and honor the Spirit and the Spirit's work?

Our Bible Study is on the first Thursday of every month at 1:30 pm in the church basement. (PRAY...ERS AT 1:00) You are all invited to join us for a great year of studying His Word. Any ques-tions, call Pat Hassmann 787-5484 or the church office...787-3187 Call the church if you need copies of the Bible Studies.

One Sunday in a Midwest city a young child was "acting up" during the morning worship hour. The parents did their best to maintain some sense of order in the pew but were losing the battle. Finally the father picked the little fellow up and walked sternly up the aisle on his way out. Just before reaching the safety of the foyer the little one called loudly to the congregation, "Pray for me! Pray for me!"

During the minister's prayer one Sunday, there was a loud whistle from one of the back pews. Gary's mother was horrified. She pinched him into silence, and after church, asked: "Gary, whatever made you do such a thing?" Gary answered soberly: "I asked God to teach me to whistle... And He just then did!"

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a mor-al lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'" Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!"

WEST HOLDEN AND MT. MORRIS JOINT COUNCIL MEETING—6/20/17 In Gary Thompson’s absence, Kathy Norlin called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. Attending from Mt. Morris were Wayne Anderson, John Jarvis, Francis Perry, Lars Anderson, Val Jarvis, Mary Stepanek, Bonnie Stark-weather, and Gary Clair. Of course, Pastor Barb was there as well, and she read us a devotion from Jesus Calling.

Pastor’s Report for May—5 visits; went to Holt Scholarship meeting; Synod Assembly; human trafficking meeting on short term goals and clearing up the language used; Pine Lake Camp Sunday afternoon through Wednesday. Pastor will be doing sermons on water things. Tomorrow HALO will be meeting in West Holden; Bible School meeting in July. MSC to accept Pastor’s report. We do not have a written agenda this meeting.

OLD BUSINESS A. Saturday Service—Our picnics have not been very well attended, but we would like to have a service down by the lake in Mt. Morris. Allen Stea? Jackie Redwoman again? Jam session? Any ideas? Pastor will check with the campers.

B. Joint Council Retreat—Pine Lake Camp—October 21 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM is a date that should work for most of us. Pastor will check if that is a good time for the camp.

NEW BUSINESS A. Our music license is mostly for contemporary music and from the new cranberry hymnal. If we would re-place it with One License as a parish it would be $175.00. It has contemporary music as well. A motion was MSC to switch to One License as opposed to CCLI.

B. Church Directory—Gary LaBouton has returned no phone calls or answered any e-mails. Pam wondered if Olan Mills still does directories. Pastor offered to go on line to look at places known for church directories, or we can check with other local photographers. John Jarvis, Pam Paugels, and Laura Araiza will be on this church directory committee.

C. John Jenks said that Pastor doesn’t have a current contract with us. She needs to break health, Social Se-curity, and retirement down to report to the government. John feels we need this done every year. We could find an old contract to use as a guideline. Lars, John Jenks, and Pastor will try to backtrack and calculate it out.

D. Joint expenses—John Jenks brought up the fact that it’s hard for West Holden to know where we’re at since we haven’t gotten a billing since February from Mt. Morris. This has been an on-going problem. Lars said he will do his best to get caught up this week.

E. Gary Clair was wondering if there is something in place to evaluate a pastor yearly. We don’t evaluate be-cause there’s a problem; it’s a professional growth process for the pastor. It’s a narrative, not a multiple choice. There is a paper trail for any pastor. Pastor would set some goals and see how we proceed with them. Gary would be happy to work with that. We could start with one goal for each church and go from there. Our next Joint Council meeting will be November 14 at Mt. Morris at 6:00 for separate meetings and 6:30 for the joint meeting. John Jarvis also mentioned that he and his wife Cindy will be having a social gathering to-ward the end of September. MSC to adjourn the meeting at 8:00 PM. We closed with the Lord’s Prayer. Submitted by Kathy Norlin, WHCC Secretary
