SOLID STATE, a 56-minute program on Twin Cities public television (channel 2,) reviews the Minnesota high-tech history, including Control Data, Honeywell, Unisys and others. One of our board members saw the program in October and thought our retirees would find this of interest.

The program will return on SUNDAY, November 10th at 8pm, SUNDAY, November 17th at 2pm, or on-line at tpt.org (type in Solid State).

Techie Corner

Techie Questions from Members Do you have any specific questions about technology or something specific you would like to see covered in this column? Send your suggestions, questions, and comments to the club at [email protected]. We will try to address

them in future issues.

This month I have a couple of items for you:

Late last month Microsoft released an Out-of-Band update for Internet Explorer. That update is included in the Octo-ber monthly patching. You should make sure you have done the monthly patching to get this patch for IE installed. Depending on you operating system the patch is done differently. For Windows 7 and 8.x the patch is an individu-al patch just for Internet Explorer. In Windows 10 the patch is included in the cumulative monthly update. Since Microsoft felt it necessary to release as an Out-of-Band update I would recommend that you make sure you have it installed. To check to see if a patch is installed. Open Control Panel (with Windows 7 and 8.x you can select it off the start menu, with Windows 10 click on the Start icon in the lower left corner and start typing Control Panel), I recommend viewing by Small icons (select this by clicking the down arrow beside View by on the top left corner of the Control Panel window), then select Programs and Features, now on the left hand side of the window select View installed updates, you can sort by Installed On and look through the list to see that the patches are installed.

You can check here each month to make sure that patches are getting installed.

Roger Ranzinger sent the following to me – Anatomy of a [AMAZON] scam:

I have an AMAZON login [that allows one to purchase merchandize with one click]. I was offered a month of free PRIME membership. I ignored any implication either way [didn’t want it]. Well AMAZON took that to mean that I accepted the PRIME membership [I never specifically opted out] and start to charge a month-ly fee [at first it was $12.99/month then it went up to $14.03]. If you didn’t specifically sign up for the free shipping and have the login, check for a monthly $14.03 fee. AMAZON will restore up to six months of payments if you call them on it – 1-866-216-1072. This smells like the Wells Fargo situation of a few years ago. Shame on AMAZON they are better than that. (JEJ Note: I think what this points out is that you should read carefully what is offered to you and make sure that you understand what offers are ex-pecting of you. How many times have you been offered something free for one month and then you forget to cancel the request with the result that you start getting billed for some service you really didn’t want – I

know I am guilty of this.

Hope you enjoy and will wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Considered one of the best vocalists of all time, Karen Carpenter captured the attention of a generation with her unabashedly catchy pop music. The Carpenters’ beautiful, memorable love songs topped the billboard charts with more than a dozen number one hits. Now singer Lisa Rock and her 6-piece band are bringing the music of the Carpenters back to the stage with their spot-on renditions of classics with “Close to You” and others.

Set in London in 1907, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder centers on Monty Navarro, a penniless clerk who is in-formed after the death of his mother that he is ninth in line to inherit the earldom of Highhurst, controlled by the wealthy D’Ysquith banking family. After the imperious ruling Lord dismisses Monty’s claim of being a relative, the eight D’Ysquiths ahead of young Mr. Navarro begin dying in natural and unnatural ways. (A single actor plays all the not-so-nice D'Ys-quiths, adding to the merriment.) Lunch includes braised boneless short ribs, mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetable, rolls and beverage and panna cotte (Italian specialty) for dessert.

I Am, He Said - Tribute to Neil Diamond

By Linda Hauck

It was a cold, dreary night with snow pellets hitting my windshield, but once I got to the Ames theatre I forgot about the impending winter and got immersed in the music of the legendary Neil Diamond. The music was spot on.

Tim Vee, singer, songwriter, guitarist and nephew of the 60's pop star, Bobby Vee, sang so many of the favorites, "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", and two hours of pure pop. He finished with an encore of "Sweet Caroline". So good, so good, so good!

Sixty five Retirees and guests clapped, sang and stomped along to the music. It was a fabulous night. Now, back to winter...

Wings of the North Air Museum

By Dave Moen Wings of the North Air Museum is located at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie, MN. It is a small museum that impressed 35 Retirees and guests on September 25th. Our tour began with a slideshow of what we were about to see that was narrated by museum Director Bob Jasperson. As he described the various airplanes he also mentioned the many thousands of each airplane that had been built for WWII. Most of the exhibits have a tie to MN through a person, company, or event. There were airplanes, a military Jeep, a 1928 Dodge car, uniforms, pictures, etc. The airplanes and vehicles have been restored and often participate in fly overs and parades. Of special interest were two airplanes connected to former President George H. W. Bush. President Bush received part of his Navy pilot training in Minneapolis and the actual airplane that he flew has been restored and is on display. He signed a compartment door on the airplane while it was being restored. Another airplane on display is similar to the one he was piloting when shot down during WWll.

After the museum, most of us headed to the Lion’s Tap restaurant just down the road for one of their famous hamburgers for lunch.

CRITICS CORNER

Fall Luncheon

By Judy Moss

The Wednesday, October 16th Fall Luncheon was a great success for 130+ retirees and their guests. Lunch was delicious, as always, at Mystic Lake.

A few door prizes were given away to retirees, followed by a great performance by the Chmielewski Fun Time Band. This six-generation polka band was represented by four generations, with the dad Florian at 92 years old playing the accordion. Patty Chmielewski (former CDC employee) was the emcee; not only was she the singer and saxophone player and drummer, but she never stopped smil-ing as she walked through the lunch crowd with her microphone. A few retirees danced, and many sang along. Many commented favorably about this entertainment.
