These annual events are an important component of our programs which aim to educate all our students about the vital importance of continued reconciliation with our Indigenous people. Furthermore, they are part of our on-going programs which develop our student’s understanding and appreciation of Indigenous history and the greater development of cultural competence. We are proud of the major role public education has played in educating our youth about these key concepts of reconciliation and the positive changes which I believe are evident in our society. KINDER OPEN DAY We had a very successful open day for our Kinder 2020 students and families last week, with a record number of people in attendance. Already we have large numbers of people enquiring about enrolling their child and completing an “Application to Enrol”. Included in these numbers are many applications for “Out of Area” enrolment, i.e., families living outside our school’s designated catchment area, which is evidence of the strong reputation our school has in the wider community. If you are aware of family, friends, neighbours etc., with a child due to start school next year please encourage them to contact the office ASAP and discuss the enrolment process. PRIMARY PLAY DAY It was my great pleasure to attend Primary Play Day at Bankstown Sports Club last week and watch our terrific Drama Ensemble perform. They were outstanding! Their piece really stood out on the day, with every member of the ensemble doing a great job and really contributing to a wonderful performance. What was particularly pleasing was to see the obvious delight and enjoyment the children had performing and their excitement following their act. Congratulations to every member of the ensemble for your great work preparing, rehearsing and performing your dramatic piece. My thanks go to our teachers; Miss Grayson, Mrs Sansom and Ms Wilkes for their great work with our drama ensemble. HOLSWORTHY HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE CUP I was delighted to accompany Mrs Hatzitanos and Year 5 students; Aleena Tomy, Noah Lukunic, Isaad Rahman and Dhanya Vijaysampath to the latest round of the Challenge Cup yesterday. Our team did a great job and won! I was very proud of the enthusiastic way our students participated and their excellent behaviour. Well done everyone!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our Reconciliation Week assemblies will be held today, with separate assemblies for Kinder-Year 2 and Years 3-6. These annual events are an important component of our programs which aim to educate all our students about the vital importance of continued reconciliation with our Indigenous people. Thank you very much to Holsworthy High staff for organising this competition. It is one of many quality programs we now have which enable our students to access the great teachers and resources Holsworthy High have, providing outstanding experiences for our students across all grades.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY Well done to our large team which competed at the Zone PSSA Cross Country Carnival. Teacher’s reports were that our team’s effort, behaviour and sportsmanship were excellent. Congratulations to everyone who had the honour of representing our school and for doing your best. Special congratulations to Alfred Marsh and Sarah Ekermawi who will go on to represent our school and zone at the SSW PSSA Regional Cross Country Carnival on Thursday 13th June. Mr Peter Ward Principal

IN THE SPOTLIGHT PRIMARY PLAY DAY On Tuesday the 28th of May, Holsworthy’s

Drama Ensemble performed their Drama piece

“Everything I Need” at Bankstown Sports Club.

The students have worked really hard preparing

for this performance and they did an outstanding

job. We are eagerly awaiting to hear if we will be

selected to perform at the next level of the

competition. Congratulations again to the

students and teachers who contributed to such a

successful performance.

DEBATING NEWS Round One of the Premiers Debating Challenge has now been completed. Holsworthy Rookies

defeated The Hamovillians from Hammondville Public School arguing why “Homework should not

be banned”. The Holsworthy Titans debated against Milperra Public School on the topic “All

homework and assignments should not be done as group work”, but unfortunately lost their

debate. We wish both teams the very best for Round Two of the debating challenge where they

will debate against each other.

CHALLENGE CUP On Tuesday (4/6/19) Dhanya, Isaad, Noah and I went over to the High School to compete in round

2 of the Challenge Cup; a competition between Hammondville, Wattle Grove and Holsworthy

Public School. This round was the Numeracy round and consisted of both group and individual tasks which we

had to solve in a time limit. Fortunately, Holsworthy Public School won round 2 and the trophy is

now displayed in the office.

The other teams had great sportsmanship as we congratulated each of them for their effort. It was

a day packed full of fun, effort and competition.

KINDERGARTEN OPEN DAY On Wednesday 29 May, Kindergarten opened their doors to prospective new and current parents

of children ready to ‘attend big’ school next year. It was a great success with the school hall full

with new and old faces. Kindergarten performed a song ‘Mr Clicketty Cane’ for the audience. Our

school Ministers were the guides for the morning and they had the privilege of moving everyone

around the 5 kinder classrooms to ‘show off’ the amazing work Kindergarten is able to do. There will be another Open Day to display our Kindergarten program to 2020 Kindergarten

students on Wednesday 18 September 2019.

P & C

Welcome to the P&C section of the newsletter.

At the end of last term and over the holidays we had a new P&C executive team voted in. We are

all really excited to work with the school community to get great things happening for our kids! We are looking forward to building on the work of past P&C executives and keeping the P&C accountable, transparent, friendly and inclusive.

The executive team is currently: President – Kelly Kennedy Vice President – Fiona Brown Treasurer – Renee De Villiers Secretary – Ananda Galagali Leads of our Sub-committees are: Events Committee - Trinh Mai-Guico and Anita Lynch Grounds Committee – Vacant Uniform Shop – Renee De Villiers Please feel free to contact any of us individually or send an email to [email protected]

EVENTS I’d like to thank all the members and volunteers who worked really hard to get the Mother’s Day stall happening. While it might not seem like much from the outside we had volunteers working in the months beforehand ordering goods, unpacking goods, going shopping, packing presents and organising and selling raffles, let alone spending all day at the school sorting presents for kids. We are very grateful for everyone and I hope all the Mums enjoyed their presents as much as I did. The P&C also ran a Bacon, Bake and Book sale on the day of the Federal Election. This event raised well over $1000 will minimal expense due to all the donations of books and baked goods from our school community. Big thanks to everyone who made donation, came and supported us

Page 9: Holsworthy Public School · Students who achieved a placing in the top 8 of each race will be progressing to the Regional Cross Country Carnival at Camden Bicentennial Equestrian

on the day and who volunteered their time. Special thanks to our Events Co-ordinator Anita Lynch who was up at the school from 7am to 4pm
