Ihe Petes hit home ice for the last time before Christmas on Thursday, having picked up 3 of a possible 6 points from 3 games in 3 days last weekend – a 5-4 OT win over the Sudbury Wolves at home on Thursday, and a pair of road losses (4-3 in OT to London, and 3-1 to the CHL’s 3rd-ranked Sarnia Sting).

Thursday’s game marks just the second of eight match ups between the Petes and 67’s this season, but the first of two tilts with the Ottawa club this month (the 67’s are back in town on Saturday, December 30 at 7:05pm). The teams last faced each other in Ottawa on October 6, with the 67’s coming out on top with a 4-3 shootout victory. They have very similar records since – Ottawa is 11-12-0-1, while the Petes are 12-11-1-0.

Neither team’s roster has changed dramatically since they last faced off. Ottawa has traded Olivier Lafreniere and released Kyle Auger and Nolan Gardiner, while the Petes lineup hasn’t been altered. However, each team will be missing players due to a series of international tournaments. Rookie defenceman Nikita Okhotyuk is taking part in the World Junior A Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia with Team Russia, while first year forward Oliver True was selected to take part in Denmark’s World Junior selection camp. For the Petes, Jonathan Ang is in St. Catharines fighting for a spot on Canada’s National Junior Team. True and Ang could face off on Friday in World Junior Championship exhibition play in St. Catharines.

Goaltender Dylan Wells is coming off a 48-save performance in Sarnia on Saturday in his third game in as many nights, earning a .908 save percentage through the weekend. Wells has played 26 of Peterborough’s 32 games thus far, posting a

.908 save percentage through the weekend. Wells has played 26 of Peterborough’s 32 games thus far, posting a 13-11-1-1 record. At the other end of the ice, Olivier Tremblay has appeared in 21 games for the Barber Poles, with a 9-6-1-1 record.

The Petes, who have the league’s third-ranked home ice power play, are poised for success with the man-advantage – their east division rivals have the fifth-most penalty minutes in the OHL, at 12.8 minutes per game, paired with an 80.5% efficiency on the penalty kill.

Off the ice, it’s the first-ever Star Wars Night at the PMC. Be on the lookout for Star Wars characters, including Rey and Kylo Ren, throughout the game.

Thursday’s game is also the annual OHL Onside fundraising and awareness night in partnership with the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre (KSAC). OHL Onside is a project aimed at increasing the understanding and awareness of young players’ responsibility to demonstrate respect for women, girls, and community members through their actions and words. Representatives of KSAC will take part in a pre-game ceremony. Fans can support KSAC’s MENding Program through a second intermission chuck-a-puck.

Sports photographer Bonnie Edwards will be on hand in the east lobby where young fans can have ‘Petes Dream’ photos taken as if they were in the Petes dressing room.

Many downtown Peterborough businesses will also be represented at the game as part of Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area night.

The game is sponsored by GoodLife Fitness, who will be located in the north lobby for the duration of the game.

Looking for the perfect holiday gift for the hockey fan in your life? Petes Holiday Flex Packs are now on sale! Receive four regular bowl flex vouchers to be used between December 30 and January 20, as well as two Petes rocks glasses for just $59.99, a savings of over 40%. .

Nathan Chiarlitti (former Owen Sound Attack) will suit up on behalf of U SPORTS as well.

“I’m excited to play in Ontario, it’ll be exciting to play in front of my friends and family since they don’t get out here [Antigonish, Nova Scotia] too much,” Clarke responded, when asked what he was most looking forward to about playing at the Meridian Centre on Wednesday and Thursday. “I’m excited to play with old teammates like Chiarlitti and Brett Litchfield; he’s one of my best friends and plays for Carleton.”

PAST & PRESENT PETES MEET IN WORLD JUNIOR, U SPORTS SHOWDOWN

By Shelbi Kilcollins

On December 13, a Petes reunion took place between alumni Hunter Garlent and Mike Clarke, and current Pete Jonathan Ang in St. Catharines, when Canada’s National Junior Team hopefuls take on the U SPORTS all-star men’s hockey team.

Clarke joined the Petes in his overage campaign after spending two seasons with the Windsor Spitfires, at the same time that Ang began his Ontario Hockey League journey. Since graduating from the OHL, Clarke has joined the St. Francis Xavier University roster, clinched two AUS conference titles, and made two appearances at the U SPORTS championship with the X-Men. For Clarke, he’ll be reuniting with more than his former Peterborough comrades, as his former teammate, St. Francis Xavier alumnus and current McGill University student

Continued from Page 7“It will be great to see all the other players around the league that you always play against but you never really get to play with. It’s just exciting to play against the Canadian World Junior team because, you know, every Canadian kid growing up idolizes those guys.”

While with the Petes, Clarke centred Josh Macdonald and Greg Betzold, two men that remain in his social circle, beyond his junior career.

“I still call some of the guys my best friends - [Garlent] plays out here at St. Mary’s; Josh MacDonald and I grew up in London together. We were on a line together, and he’s still one of my best friends.” He continued on to say, “The list goes on and on - you make a special bond with those players. [I] definitely keep in touch with lots of the guys.”

This will be the second time in Clarke’s career that he and Hunter Garlent will adorn the same jerseys, as Garlent also spent parts of three seasons with the Petes. For now, the duo stand across each other at face-offs, with Garlent attempting to draw the puck back for the AUS’ Saint Mary’s Huskies. The centreman is currently leading the AUS in assists, with 22 in 28 games.

Although not staying in as close contact with Peterborough’s current current leader of Petes goals, Clarke hasn’t forgotten the impact Ang made during his rookie season.

“He’s always been an amazing skater. I remember in his first year, he scored [the East Division] goal of the year against London, he was only sixteen. It’ll be interesting to play him now after having played with him years ago.”

Despite having played against the majority of those featured on the potential Canadian National Junior roster, Clarke is uncertain of what to expect in regards to competition.

“Everyone was sixteen when I played against them. I recognize some names, but I didn’t get to play against them at their true potential. I remember watching DiPietro stand on his head, so it will be interesting to watch him play.”

CHAD DENAULT NAMED OHLACADEMIC PLAYER OF THE MONTH

The Ontario Hockey League announced last week the OHL Academic Players of the Month for November, 2017, including Chad Denault of the Peterborough Petes.

Petes rookie forward Chad Denault is the OHL East Division Academic Player of the Month for November. The grade 12 student is currently excelling in his schoolwork, striving for success both in the classroom and on the ice.

Denault, who hails from Iroquois Falls, ON, is maintaining an 80% average in English, International Business Fundamentals, and Data Management courses at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary school.

“Chad is a conscientious young man in the classroom and on the ice,” said Petes academic advisor Kim Driscoll. “He is a disciplined student who shows good academic insight and is well liked by his teachers and fellow students.”

A 6’1”, 186lbs right-winger, Denault was selected in the 3rd round, 49th overall by the Petes in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection.

Continued from Page 16Transitioning from Ontario to the East Coast and setting out on an academic endeavor usually poses its obstacles, however, Clarke notes the lessons he learned while with the Petes eased his move to Antigonish.

“Everything you learn from playing in the OHL, from playing on a team, you can translate to university life. For one thing, you have to be a good team player - you can’t do it all on your own. You have people to lean on, you have a support system. The coaches teach you that, your teammates teach you that - how to bond with people.”

It appears Clarke’s choice to pursue an X-Ring has been seamless, earning a +11 plus/minus rating during his 2015-16 season, and tallying 28 points in 30 games the season after, all while working on a degree in business.

His fast track to adulthood via his time in the OHL aided in his journey to and throughout university. “You definitely grow up quick, being on your own. There are so many different memories, you know, like there’s lots of pressure. As much as there is pressure going to an examm there’s pressure going to the rink. You have scouts coming to watch you.”

Throughout the conversation, its apparent that a lot of memories from his time with the Petes follow Clarke. He recalls scoring the Teddy Bear Toss goal with the maroon and white, and the friendships he developed while in the Patch.
