Dear Friends,

“Back to Church Sunday” What is it all about?

It first came into being in September 2004 in the Manchester

Diocese when 160 churches united around one common, simple

message encouraging people to come to church - “Missing You”.

On that particular Sunday Radio 4 carried a story of how in one

day 1,000 people came back to church simply because they were

encouraged by this message .

Those 160 churches were spurred on by Bishop Nigel McCulloch

(remember him?) who launched “Back to Church Sunday” at a

press conference at St. Ann’s Church in Manchester city

centre. The idea was that one designated Sunday each year (last

Sunday in September) was set aside with the sole intention of

inviting people to come back to Church. The key word being

“inviting” not just by adverts or the vicar’s letter but by inviting

people personally to come along to church.

On September 28th this year we are having a “Back to Church

Sunday” and each one of us are charged with the responsibility

of personally inviting someone to come back to church with us.

It might sound a daunting task but it is not difficult, people can

only say either yes or no. If they say no they will know we are

thinking about them. If they say yes, rejoice and be glad!

Yours in Christ’s service

David

Men’s Society Once again we were fortunate to have good weather for our annual July Walk. A beautiful, warm evening made our stroll around Hade Edge towards Windscar enjoyable. We had supper at Margaret and David’s and thank them for hosting the event. David led the walk and told us some interesting facts about the moors and the tracks where we were. Many thanks to all who supported the social – we handed £70.00 from the evening to Church Funds.

Honley Churches Together The Committee is making arrangements for Honley Feast Sunday, which will be 21st September. We are planning to have light refreshments (scones and cakes) in the Village Hall at 4.30 pm, then at approximately 5.30 pm to process with Honley Band (with stops along the way for hymn singing) to St Mary’s for 6.30 pm for a Songs of Praise service. We do hope this will be well supported. If anyone can make a cake for the refreshments, please see me. We are also looking for another member of the Committee from St Mary’s. There are usually four meetings per year, which are held in the Book Room on Mondays at 7.30 pm. If anyone feels this is something they’d like to be part of, please see me.

Our friendly Family Quiz in August produced two winners; so Cynthia Hepper got the prize and Nancy Burton graciously accepted an extra biscuit with her cup of tea. Well done, Ladies!

We, and all the branches in the Diocese, have sent a donation towards a retirement present to our Honorary Treasurer Audrey Dalton who has held this post for 25 years. Personally, I think she deserves a Ferrari.

We are all thinking of Bessie Drake and holding her and her family in our prayers after her unfortunate fall at home. We also think of our member Liz Cummings and husband Mike who make their preparations to go and live in China for a while. May they find this a time filled with interest and enrichment in their lives.

Families First - Orders for this new version of our magazine may be given to Jean Swann, please. If you are already a subscriber to Home and Family you don't need to do anything but pay your subscription as usual.

Welcome Bags for women and children who go into refuges from domestic violence are still needed. I have lists of the items required. Also needed are bags of toiletries for babies whose mothers are taken into prison. A list of things needed is on the notice board in the Parish Room.

Away From It All (A.F.I.A.) gives a holiday to people who desperately need a break and have no means of having one. It can be the means of holding a family together or giving a break to a mother at the end of her tether. Most touching letters of thanks come to this section of our Action and Outreach Unit. This is achieved from the donations given at our regular meetings.

On September 3rd we shall be having our Coffee Morning for Overseas, in the Parish Room, 10.00 am - noon. We need cakes and Bring & Buy things and lots of people to come! The money raised goes directly to a Mothers' Union worker in any of the 73 countries where the M.U. is present and funds needed. Do come and bring your friends!

The Mystery of the Sinful Woman

Please take a few minutes first to read Luke 7 verses 36 – 50. Everyone loves a good mystery. But joining the Lent Bible Study at our last parish in Cornwall little did I know I was to find one in Luke’s account of the parable of “The Two Debtors”. It was not the meaning or understanding of Jesus` parable that particularly held my fascination - but the mystery of the sinful woman. The story unfolds in the home of Simon, a Pharisee, and verse 36 tells us that Jesus has been invited there to share a meal. Jesus has probably preached a sermon in the local synagogue and it was a custom for travelling teachers to be invited to share a Sabbath meal. One scholar describes it as a “banquet in honour of Jesus, since Simon may be allowing for the possibility that Jesus is a prophet.” Our mystery woman enters the story in verses 37-38 and her outpourings of love for Jesus are graphically described. It was customary at special meals to open the doors and allow others to stand around the table to watch and listen to the guests. Luke leads us to believe that the woman, who unwittingly becomes the heroine of the story, is one of these “uninvited” guests. But I am not quite so sure. Luke tells us in verses 44-46 of Jesus` annoyance at the way he was treated when he first entered the home of Simon. Jesus sets out the failings very clearly – there was no water for my feet, there was no kiss, there was no oil for my head. As forgiving as he is, even Jesus is not prepared to give Simon the benefit of any doubt. Simon makes no attempt to protest his innocence. Jesus contrasts the behaviour of Simon with the outpouring of love from the woman. But how do we explain Simon’s behaviour towards Jesus? It could be a simple gesture of contempt, but there is no motive or reason for Simon to snub Jesus in such an open manner. Indeed, there is every reason for Simon to welcome Jesus warmly. Pharisees were very strict observers of custom and the law. Yet Simon omits to offer the normal courtesy afforded to an invited guest entering his home.

11

I believe that there is an explanation for these events. This was a subtle plan orchestrated by Simon to “test” Jesus. Simon did indeed offer the normal courtesy to Jesus but instead arranged for it to be carried out by someone guaranteed to provoke a strong response from Jesus – or so Simon thought. The woman is there by prior arrangement because she lives a sinful life in the town and her reputation is well known to others at the table. Pharisees despised “sinners”, yet from Verse 39 Simon obviously knows her and has knowingly allowed her into his house. If there is a plan it is now set. Simon and any others at the table aware of the ruse wait in eager anticipation for Jesus to react to the attentions of the woman. But Jesus does not react – he completely ignores the situation that is developing – his silence speaks words. But I believe Jesus is well aware of what is happening. In Verse 39 Simon eventually breaks the “silence”. These are strange words for a host to his dinner guest. They seem to be completely out of the blue and unprovoked. There is no record of any conversation between Simon and Jesus that could have led to such a sudden outburst and the cooling in the mood that occurred. These are more like the words of someone frustrated that a reaction he is trying to provoke just does not happen. For Jesus to completely ignore the attentions of the woman must drive Simon to distraction. If others at the table were also aware of the plan it could also become a question of Simon avoiding humiliation in their eyes. This is consistent with how events then unfolded. If Jesus sensed from the beginning that he was being tested it might further explain the bluntness of his words when he finally speaks to Simon. In Verse 49 Luke tells us about the reaction of surprise amongst the other guests. Indeed they could be genuinely surprised as events unfold before them. But if some already knew of the plan, the reaction of Jesus must be totally opposite to what they expected and they would be completely thrown.

12

The remaining question is the role of the woman and Jesus` final words of forgiveness and blessing to her. There are two possibilities. My favourite is that the woman has previously only heard of Jesus through rumour and speculation in the town – it is likely that she has an ear to the ground for the latest gossip. Maybe she is unmoved or even cynical in her attitude to Jesus. This could be a likely reaction – why should this man be any different from all the others she encountered? She has gone along with the subterfuge out of pure gain – after all that is how she earns her living. However, as she begins to wash the feet of Jesus and feels his presence – what starts out as a “job” changes very suddenly for her into something quite different. The process of washing the feet of Jesus brings a reaction in her that is totally unexpected and completely overwhelms her. Jesus feels the change – her conversion – it happens silently and unnoticed by the other guests. The other possibility is, unknown to Simon; the woman has already found faith when he arranges for a “sinner” to be present. Maybe, the woman has heard Jesus preach before coming to Simon’s house. Simon might be totally unaware that the power of Jesus has already touched the woman, as it must have many in the town. Either way, Jesus knowing she finds true faith, protects her role in Simon’s plan by turning the tables on Simon, knowing full well that Simon is too embarrassed to disclose the full and public truth of his failed deception. Jesus is in control of the situation right from the very beginning. As with all good mysteries – we are left guessing. Our heroine is never mentioned again and simply disappears back into obscurity. The interesting thing about this version of the events is that it enriches Luke’s account by creating two distinct stories. The first - a very public story, witnessed by all those present, and recorded in Luke’s Gospel. The second, a more private “unseen” story between Jesus, Simon and the sinful woman.

It Shouldn’t Happen to a Carer After my bout of bronchitis in April/May I returned to work and during the afternoon I went into our upstairs lounge to see Martha and Mary. Martha is 84 years old, partially blind in one eye, going deaf and with short-term memory loss. Mary aged 94 years, has the onset of dementia and a turn of language that would put a navvy to shame. When I entered the room, Martha looked up and said, “Oh, hello, have you been on holiday?” I replied that I had been poorly. “Oh,” said Martha, “Where have you been?” “I’ve had a chest infection”, I said. Mary leaned over and poked Martha saying, “What did she say?” Martha – “She’s had her chest inflated.” Mary – “Bl***y h**l, I don’t know why, it was big enough to start with!!!” I shook my head, trying not to laugh and left the lounge. Mary often makes comments about the carer’s attributes so I’m used to this. I went to find my colleagues and found Tracey and Claire assisting Tim from bed to wheelchair. Tim had a 20’ fall from a ladder which has left him brain damaged at 59 years old. He seldom smiles but nods and shakes his head in answer and has a few words. I told my colleagues about Martha and Mary and we laughed. Looking down at Tim we found him laughing quietly, a big grin on his face. Tracey said, “Oh, I’ve never seen you laugh before Tim”. I said, “You liked that, did you” and he nodded his head vigorously. So now, when he gets grumpy or depressed, I say “I’m just going for my chest inflating”, and he starts laughing. Sadly Mary passed away in July. I miss her a lot, no-one insults me quite like her! I imagine that when she got to the Pearly Gates, she banged on them loudly and told St Peter to get off his fat bottom and open them quickly (and that is as politely as I can put it) but why should she change the habit of a lifetime!

S-eally Good On a recent visit to Sheringham, Margaret, Leah and myself went on a boat trip to see the seals and birds on Blakeney Point. The crew member explained in detail the two types of seal we would see, grey and common. On the return trip he asked a 4 year old fellow traveller," Can you tell me the two types of seal you have seen ?" Back came the reply, " Some are swimmers and some are resters."

Seeing, Knowing, and Feeling May your Spirit guide my mind, Which is so often dull and empty. Let my thoughts always be on you, And let me see you in all things. May your Spirit quicken my soul, Which is so often listless and lethargic, Let my soul be awake to your presence, And let me know you in all things. May your Spirit melt my heart, Which is so often cold and indifferent. Let my heart be warmed by your love, And let me feel you in all things.
