Dedicated to St Mary When the people of Honley built their first church in the village in 1503 they dedicated it in honour of the Mother of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady. Over the centuries “Honleyers” have celebrated each year, in one form or another, a Feast. The date, “the first Sunday after 19th September” reflects the origin of that date of the church feast day, the Nativity, the Birthday of Our Lady on 8 September. The difference of the date has something to do with the consequence of the change between the Julian and Gregorian Kalendars in 1582 which had to be corrected in 1752 when eleven days were lost. All that remains of that first church lies hidden beneath the floor of the present building. Though the boards with the Ten Commandments, Creed and Lord’s Prayer still survive in the gallery from a previous church, there are no fittings going back earlier. A prominent feature till the Puritans removed them was the figure of Our Lady beside the cross above the rood screen across the centre of the church. It has been said that what went out through the door after the Reformation returned in the 19th century through the stained glass window and the Mothers’ Union banner. St Mary’s has both the scene of the Annunciation in the east window of the Lady Chapel and the Christmas scene in the west window above the gallery. Who can miss the saints in glory in the East Window and Christmas again in the reredos behind the altar? In a recent article in The Times, a lady brought up as a Baptist wrote how she had been drawn to a deeper respect for Our Lady, not only for her acceptance of the will of God, “be it unto me according to thy word,” but also for her “being there”.

She was there when the Lord changed water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee “whatsoever he tells you to do, do it”. She was there at the foot of the cross when her son was crucified on that “green hill, Without a city wall” when the sword, foretold at the Purification in the Temple, indeed pierced her heart as she saw Him die. In recent weeks we have seen the terrible loss of young life in Afghanistan. Mothers and fathers, wives, families and friends are deep in their grief. Pray God that they may be aware of the comfort and support of the mother of Our Lord, for she herself suffered similar pain and anguish. Christians honour Our Lady for the part she played in the drama of the Word made flesh. Over the centuries they have used the greeting of the Archangel Gabriel in their prayers; “Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee”. The experience of the Church is to respond “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen”.

“Come ye thankful people come raise the song of harvest home” On the first two weekends in October, each of our Churches will be open at extra times to encourage people living in the community to visit their local Parish Church. The purpose of the invitation will be to invite residents to • celebrate Harvest Festival • look at an exhibition of Church life • have the opportunity of contributing to the work of the Church

We are asking all resident of the parish, including those on the electoral roll and regular attenders, to make or renew their promises of support for the work of the church. In order to keep each church open and in good order for the use of the people of Honley and Brockholes, we are asking for donations either on a one off basis or as a regular commitment. Although we are essentially asking for money, there are many other ways in which people may feel they would like to help such as: Church Maintenance Cleaning Minor Repairs Fundraising Gardening Social Events Everyone is encouraged to find a few minutes in their busy schedules to come and see what the church has to offer, to meet people and perhaps have some light refreshments. Each and every visitor will receive a warm welcome and the Parish Churches would be very grateful for any expression of financial or practical support anyone is able to give. Please spread the word amongst your family, friends, neighbours and we look forward to welcoming as many people as possible through the doors of St Mary’s and St George’s on each of these October weekends.

Mrs Sunderland Music Festival 19 February – 27 February 2010 This festival takes place annually in Huddersfield Town Hall and I have been a member of the organisation for the last two years. My particular involvement is with the speech and drama classes. I have noticed that for the bible reading classes we get members of, for example, Almondbury Church but no entries from Honley or Brockholes. Now I know we have some excellent readers in our congregations so why not give it a whirl? The syllabus will be out in late September and entries close on 22 November. If you would like a chat about taking part do please call me on 666827.

HONLEY NEWS

We went all over Great Britain and a lot of the rest of the world with Clive Waind as we followed the story of his life in "Idle Thoughts" at our August meeting. Where hasn't he been? As an Advisory Teacher for Music he seems to have had a hectic and wonderful time taking lots of young musicians to places near and very far away. Thank you Clive, for your enjoyable talk. Jean and Tony Hadley celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on August 8th and we sent flowers and cards to congratulate them on their great day. Jean achieved her ambition to get seven tiny girls all together for a photograph. Do bring it for us to see, Jean! I am going to attend the Huddersfield University Fresher's Fair on September 24th. If anyone would like to come too, please ask me about it all. The Mothers’ Union distributes food and ‘Grub on no Grant’ recipe books and our stall is usually one of the busiest. We are going to be very busy on September 2nd! Our Wave of Prayer service will be held in Church from 8.55 am to 9.20 am. Then we have our Coffee Morning from 10.00 am until 12.00 noon. The Parish Room will be open from 9.00 am for people to bring things in. I hope we can set up as much as possible the evening before from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm please. We do hope for a good attendance on the morning of Wednesday 2nd for coffee. The money we raise brings enormous benefits to the Mothers’ Union and their projects which so desperately need help. The proceeds, we know, are most carefully spent by our own workers at the point of need. All welcome - do come!

Report on the DCC Meeting held on 21st July

Sixteen members were present when the Vicar opened the meeting with the Transforming Lives Prayer. Clive Waind reported that Andrew Duncan had kindly agreed to inspect the buildings and prepare a report from the viewpoint of Health and Safety and Fire Regulations. Resulting from a discussion about the possible provision of access for the disabled to the Parish Room, it was agreed that the question of disposing of the building should once again be looked into before any expense is incurred. A small working party was set up to examine the feasibility of this, once the legal position has been clarified. Also emerging from the discussion about disabled access was the question of providing a handrail on the steps at the main gate of church. It was proposed and passed that the donation of £250 made in memory of the late Marjorie Booth be put towards the cost of a handrail. (This has now been installed). Ian Walter presented his Treasurer’s Report with figures for the half-year up to June 30th. These showed a current deficit of £8,017 with a projected deficit for the year of £14,238. On a more cheerful note £7,204 had been reclaimed from income tax paid on Gift-Aided giving and refunds had been obtained from overpayments on gas and electricity. Clive Green explained how by attending a meeting at Wakefield he had inadvertently been ‘sworn in’ as St Mary’s Parish Giving Officer. He had prepared a draft document on Planned Giving which would be circulated to all DCC members for consideration at the next meeting. Alison Dean had looked into the question of bank charges and in her absence, submitted a document which suggested that the Co-operative Bank offered the best deal with zero charges for charities and an ethical policy.

The sub-committee tasked with organising a weekend of Gift and Open Days at the two churches had met and their suggested plans were discussed, including display materials by church organisations in church and the provision of information leaflets. One major change was the revised date for St Mary’s which will now be the weekend of October 3rd and 4th. Under ‘Correspondence’ the Vicar read a letter from the Bishop containing advice for precautions to be observed during the current Swine Flu pandemic and a certificate had been received from the Church Urban Fund acknowledging our donation of £50 from the Outreach Committee. Under ‘Any Other Business’ Clive Waind raised the matter of opening church at times other than when services take place. It was agreed to try keeping the outer main door open with the inner glass doors locked on Wednesdays and Sundays following the services on those days. John Ambler reported that Honley Ladies Choir had offered to give a concert in church in aid of church funds. This will take place on a Friday evening in October. Diana Kaye volunteered to look into the possibility of obtaining small candles carrying the name/picture of St Mary’s for sale to visitors.

Men’s Society Walk Many thanks to Diana and Huw Griffiths for providing a wonderful supper on the occasion of the annual walk. We had a good walk, organised and led by Huw. The non-walkers had a good time also and the weather held out for us – just! My thanks go to all who supported the walk. £130 was given to Church funds.

Donation in Memory of the late Marjorie Booth Regular church attenders will have noticed, and no doubt admired, the new solid handrail on the steps leading up to the main church door. Those of us who find steps something of a challenge are most grateful to Kevin Radford for erecting this handrail so quickly and efficiently after the DCC had decided that the work should be done. Most of all, however, in this time of financial difficulties we must record our thanks to the family of the late Marjorie Booth, who made a donation to church in her memory and kindly gave permission for the money to be used to pay for the new handrail.

Cliff Green, DCC Secretary

Sheila Mitchell As a regular attender at the 8.00 am Sunday Service, Sheila may not have been so well known to many of St Mary’s congregation who attend the later service. In addition to being a long-standing member of our church, she was also a valued member of the “Old Peg” Bookshop staff and served in this capacity for many years. A cheerful volunteer, Sheila covered one Thursday afternoon each month with unfailing reliability until her recent illness. She will be sadly missed and our condolences go to all her family.

Heather’s Birthday Party Thanks to all who supported the ‘open house’ social to celebrate Heather’s birthday on Saturday 15th August. We were pleased to welcome friends from Church and our local community who enjoyed themselves. £170 was raised for Church Funds. Thanks go especially to Shirley, Matthew and Helen and Tim who helped support the ageing hosts with the preparations for the afternoon teas and evening party.

Winter Warmers I am offering you all a wonderful opportunity to de-clutter! Let me have all the warm coats, jackets, jumpers or any other cosy garments you don't want or need any more (think of all the space!). I will sell them at our Christmas Fair to keep people warm and make some money for St Mary's. Good shoes and bags sell well too. As a new venture we are branching out into party clothes so anything pretty, sequinned and fun will be welcome. Bring them to my house any time from now to December 1st or ring 664357 and I will come and collect. Thank you.

Holmfirth artWEEK Fringe Many thanks to all those who helped in any way with the artWEEK venue at St Mary's in July. All the exhibitors made sales during the week which produced £2,000 from our venue. From this a minimum contribution of 20% to the MacMillan Fund was made. I understand that the whole artWEEK has contributed over £37,000 to that Fund, which in the current economic climate is very encouraging. Using the Church as a venue also means that the impressive interior of St Mary's has been shared with and appreciated by yet more people who perhaps would otherwise not have known about it.

Many thanks to you all. Clive Waind

Honley Scout Group - Volunteers Required Our village scout group is currently in a strong position with 125 members both boys and girls aged between 6 and 18 years old, in four different age sections: Beavers 6 to 8 Cubs 8 to 101/2 Scouts 101/2 to 14 Explorers 14 to 18 years old. However, where we do lose out is “Adult” volunteers (18 plus). With so many members spread across each section, we have a shortfall. This where “you” can help. Can you spare us just 2 hours, for one night each week helping in one of these sections? Monday Beavers 6.00 pm to 7.15 pm Tuesday Explorers 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm Wednesday (Thor Pack) Cubs 6.45 pm to 8.15 pm Thursday (Atlas Pack) Cubs 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm Friday Scouts 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Unless we recruit more volunteers soon, one or more or all of these sections will have to close and that would be a shame for those who would lose out on scouting in Honley. Please don’t let Honley Scout Group close, like other scout groups that have already closed in the Holme Valley.

You can join us as either a uniformed warranted leader (and we will help you with the cost of your uniform) or as a non uniformed helper. In both cases, full training will be given.

If you can help or require more information, please contact Stuart, (Group Scout Leader) on 316002. Thank you.

Indian Evening – Friday 11th September

My friend Sue Sykes spent some time in India last year working with a charity called SCAD (Social Change and Development), to which we sent the Easter collection. Sue is coming to St George’s on Friday 11th September at 7.00 pm to tell us about the work she did there and to share her experiences of this very different culture. We will round off the evening with a selection of Indian food. Please come and join us!
