Seize the Lenten Moment!

I noticed that Cadbury Crème Eggs were in the shops in early January! Well, Easter is fairly early this year and consequently Lent begins this month with Ash Wednesday on the 22nd February. I’m looking forward to the Lent Course this year as I always find the discussions and exchange of views stimulating and interesting. It is also an opportunity to explore our faith in depth and get to know our brothers and sisters in Christ in a deeper way. This year I want to suggest you re-consider the meaning of Ash Wednesday by letting the brevity and uncertainty of life lead you into praise, wonder and beauty and to seize the moment – for this is the day God has made – let us rejoice in it! Lent can remind us that all that we love and care for is mortal and transitory, yet mortality can be the inspiration to celebration and love. So if we want to give something up for Lent, forget the chocolates and sugar – instead give up anything that prevents you from rejoicing in the passing beauty of the earth and its people. Yes, on Ash Wednesday we will be reminded that we are but dust, but we are “stardust” made from God`s intergalactic creativity and we are part of a holy adventure reflecting God`s love over billions of years and in billions of galaxies. So when you receive the ashes on Ash Wednesday accept them as ashes of transformation and be re-awakened to beauty and love.

A special day for each and every one of us The farewell service for Father David on 8th January 2012 saw St Mary‘s filled with the largest congregation in years. As our ―Chairman for the Day‖, John Dean, wisely remarked, ―no one could have dreamed that there could ever be such a crowd in church!‖ The downstairs was full and there was a sizeable group in the galleries. In worship and song, we offered our thanksgivings for David‘s ministry among us since September 1999. The choir sang, the bellringers chimed, the music group played; each and everyone there paid their tribute. No more appropriate could there have been the readings and the sermon than the visit to the Wise Men; and Father David encouraged us all to continue to follow the Star. There were gifts from Brockholes, glasses and decanter engraved with a picture of St George‘s, a card drawn by Andrew Jenkin, with the future vicar of Bude on a surf board with one of his new churches in the background; from Honley a cheque for £500 and a fine watercolour painted by Geoff Beaumont of St Mary‘s in all the glory of the redecoration it has received in recent years; from the Honley Amateur Dramatic Society a cuttings book of all the plays and pantomimes he has appeared in. We paid tribute too to Jean with a pot of orchids. Finally the church chameleon-like changed from church to hall to dining room as the congregation was presented with a marvellous spread and David cut a celebration iced cake with the telling message “What no chips?”. Rarely can there have been such a hum of conversation. It was a privilege for me to try and summarise David‘s achievements. I did not need to list all those I recorded in January‘s magazine, though I failed to mention his service for the Diocese; on the Board of Finance and on the cricket field. Rather I recalled some of the words we have so frequently heard on his lips week after week. The first is his repetition of the word ―special‖; there it is on the inside cover of the service paper! Have we not time and again heard him refer to a child, to a wedding couple, to the departed that each was “special”? His second phrase was a qualification of this - each and everyone of us. (For the statistician I counted he used these words not once, but six times in his

speech!) and special used of the church or the community is not just an adjective describing particular people but all and everybody. Father David has been special to us and made us feel special too. And for me the third of his words are the invitation to chew the fat. It has never been difficult to talk to him about matters serious or not. We have talked with him easily and Father David has talked with us and sometimes we have been surprised by what he has led us on to say. Honley has taken him to their heart and now he leaves for the Bude cluster of four churches. We send him and Jean with our love and affection and our gratitude. The Lord has called him to make his new parishioners in Cornwall special. Yes, each and everyone of them. Father David - Honley will be praying for you on the day of your Institution, Monday 30 January and for your future ministry in Cornwall.

Women's World Day of Prayer The service this year will be held at St Mary‘s Church on Friday 2nd March at 2.00 pm. This annual service is written by Christian women from a different country each year, last year this was Chile. This year it is the turn of the women of Malaysia and their chosen theme is ‗Let Justice Prevail‘. They consider their politics and feel that they have a Christian calling to speak out against injustice and intolerance in their multi-religious society. This service has become very popular here in Honley. There is much more to learn about Malaysia. Why not come and find out? A warm welcome to all.

Lent Course 2012

This will take place on Wednesday evenings* at 7.30 pm during Lent in the Parish Room and will be repeated on Thursday mornings in Church at 10.30 am, before Lent Lunches in the Parish Room (*except for the first week - both sessions on Thursday). The people Jesus chose as his disciples were just ordinary people doing ordinary jobs – yet they were willing to put everything aside to follow Jesus. Their response to Jesus marked them out. This course invites us to delve deeper into Luke's portrayal of how the first disciples grew in their understanding of Jesus and what it meant to be his disciples and discuss with others what it means for us to follow Jesus today. What should be our priorities as we try to live God‘s way? How can we cope with pressure and failure? Learn how the Lord can transform us into people who play their full part in God‘s plans for the world.

Now That David’s Gone The Diocesan Common Fund represents the total cost of providing clergy and supporting them throughout the Wakefield Diocese. This cost is shared amongst all the Parishes. In 2012 our share will be £70,825 representing over two thirds of our Parish Budget. It is very likely that it will be towards the end of 2012 before we are able to replace David with a full-time priest. However, before you ask - this is not good news for our share of the Common Fund. Parishes are expected to pay their full share irrespective of whether they temporarily have no full-time priest, or their priest does not receive a stipend from the Diocese. In 2010 and 2011 we were unable to meet our full share of the Common Fund from our normal income (mainly giving), and currently the amount unpaid is around £22,000. We want to greet our new incumbent with the Parish finances in a reasonable state, so we are proposing to use some of our reserves to clear these arrears. Our reserves are limited and this can only be a short term and exceptional solution. As you can see your regular, consistent and generous giving will be even more crucial during the months ahead. If you are still using the Collection Plate please consider joining our Planned Giving scheme. You can give via a standing order or by weekly envelopes, whichever suits you best. Remember – if you pay tax by signing one simple Gift Aid Declaration the Parish can reclaim the tax you have already paid on your giving – at no extra cost to you. Every little helps. Please ask and we will be happy to help on any aspect of giving.

Keeping in touch with St Mary’s At St Mary‘s Church every year in addition to over 200 ordinary services, there are also concerts, coffee mornings, book sales, craft sales, a children‘s club, a babies and toddlers group, street markets and many special services (e.g. pet service, Harvest, Christingle) St Mary‘s Church is for the benefit of everyone in the village and everyone is welcome whether a regular church goer, an occasional church goer or not a church goer at all. As you will know if you are reading this, we publish a monthly magazine and we also put notices in the Honley Flyer but, even then, it is difficult to make sure that everyone in the village knows what is going on. If you would like to be sure of knowing what is happening at St Mary‘s, why not give us your e-mail details and we can let you know what is happening. HONLEY NEWS

Pastoral Care

Those of us who are interested in Pastoral Matters continue to meet every few weeks and the Prayer Group meets monthly, usually on the first Wednesday each month at 10.15 am. Both of these meetings are open. Newcomers and visitors are welcome. Open Church will restart after Easter, sooner if we can manage to have the church heated! We continue to try to improve our visiting, our welcoming and keeping our Prayer List up to date but remember we are unable to do this effectively without your help. Caring for each other and those in the wider parish is even more important during the interregnum. Like all the Transformational Plan Groups we are currently discussing the DCC paper on forming a ‗Friends of Saint Mary‘s‘.

Shrove Tuesday Bash The Community Group is organising the Shrove Tuesday Bash this year on the Tuesday 21st February at 7.15 pm for 7.30 pm. It will include a pie and pea supper, with vegetarian options and the usual activities and games. If you would like to bring someone who does not normally come to church to introduce them to St Mary's please do so. There will be no charge but there will be a bowl for donations, for which we would be most grateful. Places will be limited so please sign your name, with the number of guests, on the sheet which you will find at the back of church. We look forward to seeing you for what will be a really good evening.

The New Year got off to a good start with a well attended meeting to hear Rev Jenny Barnes talk about her ‗Life Experiences - so far‘. Her story began when she was a schoolgirl of nine and first became aware of her Christian faith and continued through her school days, first job, meeting John, getting married and having two lovely daughters. It was when the girls grew up and left home that she became interested in Prison work and trained to become a Church Army Chaplain and worked at Armley, Leeds. She worked in a number of different prisons before becoming ordained as an Anglican priest. Following a two year curacy in a parish she returned to the work she loved as an Anglican Prison Chaplain. She worked in a variety of prisons including Wolverhampton and Lichfield, moving every two or three years. Throughout all this she was supported by her faith and by a very tolerant husband! Our lives are very ordinary by comparison! Our next meeting will be our AGM on 8th February please join us and hear about our plans for the coming year. As this meeting is close to the start of National Marriage Week, that will be our theme for the evening and we are asking you to bring any items that you received as Wedding presents. We will try to estimate how old they are! Some of you may even have things your parents received at their wedding and passed on to you, bring them too. As most of you know I am finally finishing, after 17 years on and off, as your branch leader. Many thanks to you all for your support, especially Margaret and Brenda who each gave me a three year break. My involvement with MU has given me great pleasure and encouraged me to try new things. Little did I know when I collected up the Hymn books and finished off the biscuits as a child at my mum‘s branch of MU where it would lead. My very best wishes for the continued growth of our branch. I am sure that you will all do your bit in helping the new team.

St Mary’s DCC Report held on 13th December

A record 17 members of the DCC were present when David opened the last meeting under his chairmanship with a prayer. The first item of business was to formally elect Clive Waind as Lay Chairman for the interregnum, John Dean will be Deputy Chairman. Treasurer Ian Walter reported that our Common Fund payment for 2012 has been assessed as £70,825 – a rise of 4.2% (average rise across the diocese is 2.65%!). Ian proposed that we should inform the diocese that we shall once again be paying £56,000 initially with extra payments at the year‘s end if we have any surplus left over from our running costs. Clive Green had produced a discussion document relating to the proposal to set up a ―Friends of St Mary‘s‖ organisation. He stressed that the real motive in this was one of Mission rather than Finance. It was agreed that he would chair a working party consisting of the convenors of the 5 Transition Planning Groups to report back to the DCC. In the meantime leaflets in church over Christmas would invite visitors to leave an email address in order to be kept informed of future church events etc. The subject of having an open church continues to be a matter of interest to the DCC and following discussion John Dean agreed to look into the implications regarding insurance, removal of valuable items for safe keeping. Three of the five Transitional Planning Groups gave brief reports.

The Worship Planning Group had planned the Family Services for February (Christingle) and March (Baptism). They are also to reprint the Eucharist Service Books.

Finance and Property had appointed Clive Green as Lay Chairman and had organised the overdue inspection of electrical items, lightning conductors and a fire risk assessment. The reordering sub-committee had arranged a further meeting in January with our architect to discuss various alternatives for the provision of a kitchen, meeting area, office and storage space in church.

Prayer and Spirituality appealed for more members. Under Any Other Business the following matters were dealt with: Permission was given in principle for the Infants School to use

the bookshop for interviews when the Parent Support Adviser visits.

Graham Wardman asked for contributions to the Parish Profile which he is preparing to circulate to any prospective candidates for the incumbency.

John Dean asked that enquiries be made about permission and equipment to make a camcorder recording of David‘s induction in Bude, since so few people will be able to make the journey.

Clive Waind proposed that a firm date, Saturday, July 7th be made official for the Summer Street Market in celebration of the Queen‘s Diamond Jubilee. This was agreed.

23 young people met in the Village Hall for the January AD meeting. This was an exciting evening with a Sports Theme. We welcomed Val Tipling and Colin Drake and are most grateful to them for the sports equipment they brought and the professional organisation of the activities. The children had a lot of fun. The February meeting will be on Thursday 9th February and will be back in church and focus on a St Valentine‘s topic.

News from Brockholes School We‘ve had a great start to 2012 at Brockholes School. As usual, teachers have been busy preparing the terms work for the different areas of school. ‗Homes‘, ‗The Universe‘ and ‗Changes‘ are the titles for our exciting thematic curriculum. This year at Brockholes School we are launching our own ‗Year of Reading‘. We will be running a reading reward scheme to encourage children to read on a regular basis and hopefully extend their range of reading material to different genres. The School Council have already come up with some brilliant ideas to re-vamp the library area and the children have suggested different ways of categorising the fiction section. In addition, all classes are thinking about their reading area and the children are coming up with different suggestions about the books they would like more of. Two children from Year 6 have been busy designing record sheets to accompany the reward scheme. The joy of books and reading is something that many people treasure and take with them through their life. Hopefully this focus at school will develop it for even more children. In addition to all of this the school diary is full of many other exciting activities this term. Fantastic Friday lunches each month, class assemblies, ‗bikeability‘, the swimming gala, class day visits to Cliffe House, Easter Services and the Drama Club taking part in the RSC Drama Festival are just a few of the many things that are happening.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance Thank you once again to all the kind people who left bras at the back of the church and for helping to reach the target I set i.e. 1,000 during 2011, wonderful! These were taken to Pocklington (my depot) once again by Sheila Dean of Lindley, to whom I am enormously grateful. Sadly, Sheila is no longer well enough to continue this service, so if anyone ever goes that way or knows of someone who does please let me know. Heartfelt thanks especially to Eileen Broadbent of Honley who has an enormous number of contacts and who helps this worthwhile cause - thank you, Eileen, for your splendid input into helping us, but also for encouraging several friends to donate their Christmas card money, we are so very grateful. Calling all Francophiles! Do you want to practise your French? If so, on Saturday 11th February between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm in the Arboretum at Storthes Hall there is a showing of a French film. The session is led by a native French speaker (formerly a lecturer at Kirklees College) who leads group activities of various kinds before the showing of the film in order to prepare us for the film and then after the film, which is shown in French with French sub-titles, there is discussion in French about it. The session costs £10 per person and you just pay when you arrive. Graham and I will be attending, so if you have any questions please see either of us.

Marmalade Connoisseurs Lots of people make their own marmalade and like to compare it with other makers. Did you know that there is a Marmalade Festival every year at Dalemain House in Cumbria? If you are interested please let me know and I will let you have an entry form. The National Marmalade Day is Saturday 25th February at Dalemain. However if you would like to send a jar to the Festival, the closing date for entries is Sunday 19th February. Believe it or not, you can send your marmalade through the post quite safely (many send from abroad, including Japan!). It‘s lots of fun, in aid of a good cause (Hospice at Home) and you get a reply with points awarded (by the local W.I.) for appearance, colour, consistency, flavour, etc. Noel and Pat Dransfield went to the Festival a year or two ago and would happily answer any queries I cannot. Give it a go!
