Volunteer Participation: One of the Biggest Issues Facing Non-

“Volunteer Participation: One of the Biggest Issues Facing Non-Profit Organizations Today.”

All over the Country, a common theme seems to be developing. Maybe it is just a sign of today’s times; the more we plug in to connect, the

more we disconnect from our family, neighbors and community. In our efforts to stay connected, we actually further distance ourselves.

Perhaps it has more to do with today’s culture, and/or increasing crime rates, or economic issues. Whatever the underlying issue is, or the

systematic steps that led us to where we are today; the one thing that still remains is the need to aid and assist others through non-profit

organizations with the support of volunteers. The common thread across the Nation is not only getting volunteers, but more importantly,

retaining the volunteers.

Do these sound familiar? Common reasons people cite for not volunteering:

1) I don’t want to go to meetings. 6) I don’t like Jane Doe or John Doe.

2) I don’t want to commit. 7) I really don’t understand what you do.

3) It sounds like too much work. 8) No one has asked me to help

4) I just don’t have time. 9) I don’t feel qualified

5) I won’t know anybody. 10) I’m really not sure who to talk to for info We would like to develop and imple-

ment a “process” to initiate a program of volunteer participants that are profile based on their interests or expertise.

From this process, we would like to enrich and expand our current “Volunteer Recognition” program to include more of a comprehensive

“Volunteer Rewards and Recognition” program that we can build upon over the next few years.

This new program will include: motivation stimulators, feedback, clear and concise areas needed for volunteer efforts, expectations &

descriptions, training/and or support, recruitment tools, mentors, exit meeting follow -ups, reward & recognition levels. It will also include a

“Volunteer Coordinator/Chairman”, and a volunteer committee.

Governor’s Message Well brothers, how time flies by as we start a new moose year. First: I would like to thank Troy and his board for a great job that they performed the past two years. Secondly: I want to thank the Moose membership for their support and trust as your governor. This year I would like to build on all the success that Troy and his board has achieved. To accomplish this success it will take all of us to reach this goal. We have some new faces on the board with plenty of experience. Let's get behind the board with 1472 pride, and let's be successful. We have a lot of good activities at our lodge with dances, Dj's, sports, holiday outings for good family fun, the queen of hearts with the pot over $4,000.00 and many more. Come to the lodge on Wednesday and Friday night's where our kitchen makes some really good meals at reasonable prices. Lastly and most importantly, our membership. We need to keep AND bring in new members.

Again thank you for your support.

Your Governor Gerry Mastrovito

Senior Regents Message Our Moose year runs May-April each year. Looking back at the past year, I'm sure eve-ryone will agree, it has been a very successful year. Many, many thanks to everyone for making that possible, and special thanks to the outgoing Senior Regent, Dawn Ozmore.

The new slate of officers for 2016-2017 was in-stalled at a delightful dinner and program on April 27. I am honored to be the new Senior Regent and, with your help, will try to fulfill the duties of the office. Hopefully, this year will be even more successful.

Looking ahead, we have many plans already in place and more to come. We would love to see each of you and cordially invite you to attend our Wednesday evening meetings. Your assistance with the many projects will be greatly appreciated and, you will be rewarded knowing that your help will be a blessing to many others.

The Hopewell Moose & Family Center #1472, and the Women of the Moose, Chapter #1180, would like to congratulate Betty Kilbourn for being chosen as “Volunteer of the Month” for March – 2016. Betty Kilbourn defines the word “volunteer”. She

joined our Chapter in 2012, and has dedicated countless hours to both our lodge and chapter. She can usually be found working the door to our lodge’s weekly dinner service, Bingo twice a week, Queen of Hearts weekly progressive game, as well as most dances and spe-cial events. Being greeted by Betty “at the door”, is something most members have come to expect and enjoy, upon entering our lodge. She can always be counted on to help with applications and questions from new members and guests. In addition to devoting 5-6 days at the lodge, Betty also volunteers her time with: our Children’s parties, lodge fundraising dinners, special breakfasts, picnics, bake sales and other special events such as: Dart & pool tournaments, Wine & Cheese Tasting, Policeman’s Breakfast, Wild Turkey Dinner, and our annual “Ride to the Wall” event. Betty takes the initiative to stay involved and current of lodge happenings. She routinely attends District Meetings, State and Mid-Year Conferences as well as International Conferences. She re-cently earned her degree as our chapter’s newest “Academy of Friendship” co-worker, in January of 2016. Please join me in congratulating Betty Kilbourn, for her tireless dedication to our lodge and to the Moose Fraternity!

Holiday Helper at Fort Lee

“It’s The First Time” You knew her when you first saw her. She’s had the shape you really liked, those curves right where you wanted them. A good solid body even if she had a few flaws, you could fix those. Those big, round headlights and that fat rear end. Yeah, she’s the one for you! She sounds smooth, but has a little growl when she warms up. You know she’s the one for you, especially after you saw her with her top off. Yep, she’s a ‘67 Mustang GT500, Eleanor Con-vertible with a Roush 427/480 HP SRX Stroker Engine complete with a FAST EFI fuel injec-tion system and a custom AOD automatic transmission. A classic muscle car with a modern twist.

Maybe your flavor is retro rides, custom bikes and everything in between; from the 1916 Indian Twin to the Confederate’s latest creation, P51 Fighter Combat. Wide open ride with the wind in your face!

Many of us remember the day we got our first set of wheels. It’s a relationship that can’t be replaced or forgotten. Our rides are more than a piece of metal on wheels. It’s …MY RIDE!

See those restored works of art that will bring back memories. Come to the Hopewell Moose Lodge Family Center’s first car & bike show on June 11, 2016 from 8am – 3pm.

This first time ever event hosted at our lodge, will be open to the public and enjoyed by many, young and old. Bring your child, grandchild, grandfather or favorite girl. Got a ride you’re proud of? Enter the show and show your pride and joy. Two wheels or four, registra-tion is only $15 before June 5th, $20 on day of show. We are also looking for vendors to display your favorite wears starting at $25.

This inaugural show is made possible by our host, “The Southern Knight Cruisers Car Club.” Over 30 awards will be handed out along with dash plaques to the first 100 registered vehicles. Food will be provided by the Moose Lodge & available for pur-chase. It promises to be a fun day for the whole family.

Show Contact: Ricky Williams 804-691-3754 Email: [email protected] You can get pre-registration forms for participation or vendor at

www.SouthernKnightsCruisers.com 100% of the proceeds goes to support our Country’s military personnel and their families, specifically: the Fort Lee’s Holiday Helper Association. The Holiday Helper’s Association enhances the quality of life for our military and their families, offers assistance and support to our military, wounded warriors, retirees, widows, survivors, veterans and their families and is dedicated to provide comfort and support to our military children who face diverse challeng-es as their parent(s) serves.

Also, thank you to J.D. Langley & his wife, Marysue for loading and delivering the unsold merchandise to a local thrift store. We appreciate everyone’s hard work this past Saturday. To everyone who donated items to our yard sale; we appreciate each and every one of you. Your donations enabled us to have a prof-itable fundraiser that we will put to good use within our community and fraternity. With much gratitude,

Mattie Rogers & Dawn Ozmore
