TheOcalaWinter Circuit had a record-break-ing weekend Feb. 19-20 as the $50,000HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Ani-

mal Health, had the largest grand prix starting fieldever seen in Ocala with 50 competitors in the tack.Sunday’s record came on the heels of Thursday’s$25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by PfizerAnimal Health, which set the record at 48 starters.Andre Thieme of Plau Am See, Germany, and hisown Cesar captured the top prize in the $50,000event to highlight the week of competition at theOcala Winter Festival. The Sunday afternoon course was designed by

Jack Robson of Coronado, Calif., and saw 12 teamsreturn for the jump-off, with only three going dou-ble-clear. Thieme had two of those efforts, firstaboard his own Uvalier, and next aboard Cesar in33.772 seconds to capture the win.“Cesar is usually a very fast horse,” said

Thieme. “Today he didn’t seem as fast in the firstround, but was very careful and left everything up.I was very pleased when I brought him back forthe jump-off, as he jumped careful and had greatspeed to the finish.”The top three ribbons had a German flare, as first

to show in the jump-off and setting the GreatAmer-ican Time to Beat in 35.909 seconds was MatthiasHollberg and Apex Equestrian Center’s Wadisson.Hollberg, also of Germany, now resides in Apex,N.C., and operates Apex Equestrian Center. Holl-berg won the $50,000 Charles Owen Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at the 2010Ocala Winter Festival aboard Full A’s.“This was the same week I won the Grand Prix

last year in Ocala,” said Hollberg. “We came soclose! I’m really excited this year to be showingWadisson. We’ve only been showing together forless than a year, but he has a ton of potential andI’m very excited about what he can do.” At theCulpeper Finals in 2010, Hollberg and Wadissontook second place in both the $15,000 Brook LedgeOpen Prix, and $40,000 HITS Grand Prix, pre-sented by Pfizer Animal Health. In the U.S., Thieme has quickly become recog- PH

nized as a top performer. His equine careerstarted in Germany as a young dressage rider, who then traveled to the United States andbegan competing in the jumper divisions. Now, he continues to boast a successful careeras an international competitor, with severalnotable wins and finishes under his belt. Lastyear, he and Cesar, a 9-year-old mare, won the$75,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix, presentedby Pfizer Animal Health, during the OcalaMasters. Two weeks later, he traveled to Ther-mal, Calif., and placed fifth aboard AragonRouet in the $300,000 Lamborghini GrandPrix, presented by Lamborghini of NewportBeach, which helped to cement his spot in thetop 20 of the 2010 Pfizer $1 Million GrandPrix Rider Rankings. Thieme continued toshow with HITS throughout the season, rack-ing up ribbons and prize money along the way,and eventually placed ninth in the Pfizer Mil-lion aboard Aragon Rouet. This year, Thieme has returned to the U.S. to

once again pursue the richest grand prix in his-tory, the Pfizer $1Million Grand Prix. Sunday’sGrand Prixmarked his fourth Grand Prix on theroad to the 2011 Pfizer Million, and so far thisseason he’s consistently placed on two mountsin each event, with Sunday’s outing being hisbest yet with a first and third place finish.“The High-Performance riders from

around the world have shown an over-whelming response to the Pfizer Million,”

said Tom Struzzieri, HITS President andCEO. “Last year’s event was a success andthe interest for this year’s continues to growat our winter circuits in Thermal, Calif., andhere in Ocala. This event was created to giveunprecedented opportunities for riders in theUnited States, and it’s clear that the interestand appeal has been embraced globally.” HCD

TheThursday, Feb. 17, $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, was the second-largest grand prix starting field ever at the HITS

Ocala Winter Circuit. Kent Farrington, riding Up Chiqui, owned byAlex Boone, William Dobbs and Farrington, beatout 48 starters to take the top prize in the class. The course, designed by Jack Robson of Coronado, Calif.,

saw only five teams return for the jump-off.“It was an intelligent course,” Farring-

ton said. “Since the class was so big, itreally sorted us out and we didn’t havetoo many in the jump-off. The bendingline to the triple combination posedsomewhat of a challenge since it wasgoing away from the gate.”In the jump-off, Farrington overcame

the Great American Time to Beat, held by second-placefinishers Andres Rodriguez and Larkanaro, owned by Ro-driguez andAndreas Olivares, by less than a second. “He’sa speed specialist,” said Farrington, of his horse. “Goingfast in the jump-off is one of our strongest points and todayit really mattered with everyone having such fast times.”Farrington, 30, of Chicago, Ill., and Up Chiqui have

built one of the most promising reputations within thesport over the last decade. The team has represented theUnited States in the Nations Cup, and earned the right tocompete at the World Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009.Alongside an endless resume of big wins and accom-

plishments, the chestnut gelding was named USEF ShowJumping Horse of theYear in 2007 with over $300,000 inwinnings. Farrington returned to HITS Ocala this weekfor the first time since 2010, where he and Up Chiquiwon the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, presented by PfizerAnimal Health, at last year’s Ocala Winter Classic. Theycouldn’t have picked a better week to show, as the record

number of entries was matched withthe most beautiful weather, nearing 80degrees.Also returning to HITS Ocala for the

first time in 27 years was 1996Olympic Silver Medalist Peter Leone.“Tom [Struzzieri], his team, and hismanagement group all do a great job,”said Leone. “I’m trying to transition

my clientele to becoming HITS show clientele. I reallyenjoy the HITS shows and what they have to offer. Lastyear, I was able to do the first week of Culpeper in April, and five or six other events at HITS Saugerties, includingthe Pfizer Million.”Leone plans on returning to Ocala in order to qualify for

this year’s Pfizer Million. “Tom has a good instinct for whatprofessional horsemen and their families are looking for,”he said. “I’m coming back for this Sunday’s class. While thistrip was a solo effort for me, I hope to bring my clients withme in a couple of weeks when I return. I know that with theintroduction of the Pfizer Million, my personal participa-

tion level with HITS has increasedand as a result, my clients’ partic-ipation level with HITS also in-creased. I’m sure that the same can be said across theindustry. This class is nothing but good for our industry.”HITS President and CEOTom Struzzieri shared the same

sentiment. “The introduction of the Pfizer Million was in-tended to raise the standards of show jumping here in theUnited States and to reward our customers with an oppor-

tunity that’s the only one of itskind in the world,” he said. “I thinkwe accomplished that goal in 2010and the industry has truly em-braced this event more than ever. After the success of last year, ourlongtime customers, as well asnew and international riders, areall making plans to qualify for thishistoric event.”Rounding out the top in the

class were Tracy Magness andTarco Van Ter Moude, owned by

Mr. and Mrs. John Bartko, in fourth place, followed byDavid Tromp and Renoir du Buisson, owned by BeyaertFarm Inc., in fifth place. HCD

In a weekend that saw a record number of entries in sev-eral divisions, including two record-setting highs forgrand prix entries, the Feb. 20 showing of the $10,000

Devoucoux Hunter Prix was the icing on the cake. An out-standing 70 pairs started on a course designed by Tim Hottof Tenn., as a mix of professionals, amateurs, and juniorswere awarded the top ribbons.Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, brought her Sun-

day best when she took home the first-place ribbon aboardMTM La Costa, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ken MacKenzie.Out of the 70 trips in the first round, the pair received thehighest score of 87, and then an 84.5 in the second roundfor a total of 171.5. Fenney, a grand prix veteran, showed

her versatility on the hunt field and also picked up thefourth-place ribbon aboard Kaitlyn Arnold’s Dylan.“It was a lot of fun,” said Fenney. “The course flowed very

nicely and it was decorated beautifully. I was very pleasedwith how we did. There are so many good horses and riders, now more than ever, who come out week after week for thisclass. A lot of people have taken an interest in the big [Dia-mond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix] Final, so it’s nice to seethat this event has been set up and received so well.”Junior rider Meg O’Mara of Rumson, N.J., aboard Walk

the Line, owned by Don Stewart and O’Mara, emerged rightbehind Fenney as the second-place winner. She scored an86 in the first round and an 85 in the second round for a totalof 171, just half a point behind Fenney.“This was my first time ever competing in this class,”

O’Mara said. “I was really excited to show in it. I liked thebending lines and the jump outside of the ring. My horsehad so much fun doing this class; he was perfect.”O’Mara trains with Don Stewart and Bibby Farmer Hill of

Ocala. With four weeks of competition remaining, O’Maraplans to show at HITS Ocala for the rest of the circuit beforeshe travels to HITS Culpeper and HITS Saugerties to com-pete in the spring and summer series, where she hopes to ce-ment her place at the Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final. Thefinal takes place Sept. 10-11 at HITS-on-the-Hudson inSaugerties, N.Y.“The Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix was de-

signed to give the diverse audience of hunter riders in thesport an unprecedented opportunity that coincides with thesame intention we had when we developed the Pfizer Mil-lion,” said HITS President and CEOTom Struzzieri. “MegO’Mara is a prime example how the Final will not be a‘given’ for just the professionals, and that dedicated, tal-ented competitors at every level will have an opportunityto be successful in these events.” HCD
