each Grand Prix and I don’t jump them in between.”Kenny Krome of Westminster, Md., designed a course

that challenged the 33 competitors. As the first 10 ridersfailed to produce clear rounds, it was Grand Prix veteranAaron Vale of Morriston, Fla., aboard Doug’s Crew’s Hon-eylands Douglason who got the excitement flowing with thefault-free round. Vale, as well as Fenney, each piloted twomounts to the jump-off. Vale’s second ride was aboard Bon-nie Smith’s Tibor. At the end of the first round, 13 pairs were set to return for

Krome’s challenging eight-effort jump-off. It wasn’t untilthe seventh trip that Krome’s code was cracked. KristenVan-derVeen of St. Charles, Ill., and Bull Run’sAlpha & Omega, owned by Bull Run Jumpers, Inc., were the first to rise to thechallenge with a clear round and set the Great AmericanTime to Beat at 44.27 seconds. VanderVeen finished theclass in fifth place.“It’s nice to be back in Ocala,” said VanderVeen, one of

brightest young riders in the country. “I’ve been showingthis horse a long time now and I have some new ones I’malso excited about. And the Grand Prix classes here are al-ways good for me and my horses.”Vale andTibor were next to show and easily stole the lead

by shaving nearly four seconds off the time in a blazing40.37 seconds. His leading time lasted three rounds untilFenney and MTM Centano executed the winning round in39.29 seconds.Vale has had a tremendous season thus far at HITS

Ocala, with top place finishes in multiple Grand Prixclasses, including a third place finish in Thursday’s $25,000SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, and a fourth place finish in the $50,000 HITS GrandPrix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health on Feb. 19.“I knew Aaron [Vale] was fast and he’s always a tough

one to beat,” said Fenney.Fenney noted some difficult points on the course. “The

Voltaire jump posed some difficulty in that it was ratherlarge and was either heading toward the gate or toward theVIP tent. When the horses were headed to the oxer, theytended to shift toward the gate. The other direction put themgoing toward theVIP tent, and a lot of them don’t like that,”she said. “My horse seems to go even better off the clockthan in the first round. Coming down the hill I did sevenover to the vertical and that set them up a bit rather thangoing bold in six.”One of the final two competitors who tried to top Fenney,

Patty Stovel of Chester Springs, Pa., and her own Carigor Zposted a final time of 40.90 seconds to finish in third placefor the second Sunday in a row. Harold Chopping of South-

ern Pines, N.C., and Kendra Bullington’s Patent Pendingwere the last to show and produced a clear round in 40.91seconds to finish in fourth. As the road to the Pfizer Million continues, Fenney leads

the way in the 2012 Pfizer Million Rider Rankings.“It’s very exciting to be on top of the standings this early

into the year,” said Fenney. “My husband [Mike Mc-Cormick] and I are looking forward to going back toSaugerties again for the third year in a row to show in the Fi-nals there. It’s a lovely place and the Pfizer Million is one ofmy favorite classes I’ve ever competed in.”

A WIN IN THE $25,000 SMARTPAK GRAND PRIXQUALIFIES FENNEY FOR THE 2012 PFIZER MILLIONTracy Fenney banked her eighth Grand Prix of the qual-

ifying season with a win Feb. 23 in the $25,000 SmartPakGrand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboardMTM Farm’s MTM Centano to become eligible for herthird appearance in the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. Nostranger to Pfizer Million glory, Fenney appeared in HITS-on-the-Hudson’s big-ticket class in both 2010 and 2011 withtwo top-20 finishes.Fenney has her sights firmly set on September’s offering.

She stole first place in the preliminary Rider Rankings fromformer Canadian Olympian Jill Henselwood with two sec-ond-place Grand Prix finishes in Week III.The win was Fenney’s third during the HITSWinter Cir-

cuit in Ocala and MTMCentano’s huge stride ate up CourseDesigner Ken Krome’s tracks. He presented technicalityover size to both horse and rider, with a water obstacle atfence No. 4 as well as a double and triple combination inthe second half of the course.“He did a really nice job. The first round jumps were not

super tall and gave the horses a good chance,” said Fenneyof Krome’s design. “The second round verticals were talland we really had to be careful, but he [MTM Centano] hasa giant, flowing stride and he really rises to the occasionwithout spooking.”
