WINNING SPINSBOTH THESE WINNING SPINS

feature versatile virtuosi as leaders, musicians who have mastered more thanone instrument and are conversant with, and comfortable in, a wide range of styles. The albums also are personal reflections ofhow the two musicians view themselves atthis juncture of their artistic lives.

For Steve Turre, it means focusing onhis trombone playing and love of swing andthe blues, without abandoning his otherinterests, from funk to Afro-Latin, or hismastery of an instrument he has single-handedly brought to jazz: seashells. ForAnat Cohen, it is reflecting her musicallife in New York City: she says she "flowsbetween modern and traditional jazz, between samba and choro: all maybe in aweek's time," all while being equally pro-ficient on clarinet, tenor sax and bassclarinet.

Spiritman, Steve Turre (SmokeSessions), is a live studio date in the basicquintet/sextet context that Turre emergedfrom with Art Blakey, Woody Shaw andRahsaan Roland Kirk in the 1970s and80s. Here he's joined by alto and sopranosaxophonist Bruce Williams, pianistXavier Davis, bassist Gerald Cannon anddrummer Willie Jones III, who bring a con-vincing Afro-Latin-inflected hard bop vibeto the leader's opener, "Bu," a tribute toBlakey.

Turre's fondness for organ combosinforms his take on "Lover Man," the brisk,"toe tappin' swing" emulating that sound. His jaunty unmuted solo has a soulful heft, contrasting with his gentler cone-mutedsolo trades with bass, a signature strategyalso employed to fine effect in the midst ofa swinging "'S Wonderful."

One of Turre's strengths that sets himapart from most of the trombonists whocame out of bebop, hard bop and Latin jazz,is his creative command of a panoply ofmutes and, hence, of trombone voices. Hisemotionally expressive plunger mute isheard to good effect on his original,"Trayvon's Blues," which also contains aplaintive shells coda, and evocatively onthe ballad "It's Too Late Now." HisHarmon mute shines on Silver's "Peace."

Two other formative aspects of Turre'slife are also showcased on the album. His30-year continuing tenure with theSaturday Night Live band is referenced byhis "Funky Thing," often heard on theshow. His parallel career in Latin jazz isreflected by his "Nangadef," featuringChembo Corniel on congas, cast in a buoy-ant "African 6" time.

Shells, for the first time recorded whileplayed inside a piano so that the stringsresonate, are included on the closer, a med-ley of Turre's a cappella "Spiritman" andthe group's version of Miles Davis' "AllBlues." This music has a positive, swagger-ing confidence; Turre's obvious enthusiasmfor it infecting his bandmates, who all con-tribute inspired performances.

Luminosa, Anat Cohen (Anzic), marks adecade since Cohen's debut album cameout and, in those ten years, she has becomea preeminent jazz clarinetist, even thoughshe considered tenor saxophone her firstinstrument when she arrived in the U.S.from Israel in 1996. She plays clarinet oneight of the 11 tracks, and bass clarinet ontwo others. She only breaks out her tenoron "The Wein Machine," her tribute to jazzimpresario George Wein, which is also theonly piece with downright swing rhythms.

Most of the album reflects Cohen'saffection for Brazilian music but herapproach is fascinating because of how sheand her band members put a unique spinon the Brazilian sources. Unlike previousjazz generations, they don't simply graftjazz onto forthright Brazilian rhythms andforms. The rolling shuffle that introducesMilton Nascimento's "Lilia," the openingtrack, is barely recognizable as bossa novaand Cohen's piping high clarinet strays farfrom the tropics, before a second sectionproduces a swinging samba feel for fluidyet forceful clarinet and piano (JasonLindner) solos and interactions.

Brazilian acoustic guitarist RomeroLubambo and hand percussionist GilmarGomes contribute effervescent sparkle toseveral tunes, and to a broodingNascimento's "Cais," featuring bass clar-inet, which Cohen plays with much morewoodwind flavor than most jazz saxophon-ists. The fetching sentimentality of slowaccordion infuses "Ternura," showcasingCohen's Choro Aventuroso trio, also heardon the exuberant "Espinha de Bacalhau"with Vitor Goncalves on accordion.

Lindner uses electric piano and synthswith effective restraint on a pensive bal-lad, "Ima," as well as on a prancing take ofelectronica stalwarts Flying Lotus' "PuttyBoy Strut." Throughout the recordingCohen, like Turre, performs with both vir-tuosity and admirable passion.

Steve Turre's Quintet celebrates therelease of Spiritman at Smoke, March 13-15. Anat Cohen's Quartet appears at SheaCenter at William Paterson University onMarch 1 and Jazz Standard March 4-8.

THE STRONG, ALMOST FIERCEvoice on the answering machine bids

the caller, "Leave. Word." Though he cele-brates his 90th birthday March 13, even inthis terse message, Roy Haynes' vitalitycomes through in his crisp diction, aura ofauthority and gift for making himselfunderstood, not only in conversation butalso musically. No wonder he's been thedrummer of choice for top-flight musicalinnovators for more than seven decades.

Love of music and the strong personali-ties seem to run in the family. BothHaynes' parents, who came to the U.S.from Barbados, sang and played instru-ments. The drummer remembers hisfather's pride in having an organ in the liv-ing room, and making music with familyand friends. Young Haynes found inspira-tion while growing up on Haskins Street inRoxbury MA, a diverse neighborhoodwhere he heard music coming from a syna-gogue across the street, and bells from aCatholic church up the hill. "It was beauti-ful growing up there in those days.Roxbury was like a movie; I loved it."

Haynes was always drawn to drums andwould tap out rhythms on whatever wasavailable. "I don't know what I'd be doing ifI didn't decide to play drums. I got put outof school when I was a kid for drummingon the desk with my thumb." The rhythmicdistraction proved too much for theteacher, who sent the ninth-grader to theprincipal's office. "They told me I couldn'tcome back 'til I brought one of my parentsto school. I knew my father wouldn't go—he'd want to kick the teacher's behind,"Haynes recalls with a laugh. The incidentmarked the end of his formal education.

As a teen, Haynes gigged regularly, building a local following and attractingthe attention of bandleaders passingthrough Boston. He caught the ear of Luis

Russell, a former musical director for LouisArmstrong who had split to form his ownband, which played legendary New Yorkvenues such as the Savoy and the Apollo. The bandleader's daughter, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Catherine Russell, says,"Roy came to a gig I was on a few years agoand very patiently waited to say hello tome afterwards, so he could show me thisperfectly preserved letter from LuisRussell. It was an invitation to join hisorchestra. It was very clear and detailedand included the exact pay. I hope he stillhas it, because it's a valuable piece ofarchival material at this point. I wanted it,but he wouldn't even let me hold it!"

Russell offered the young drummer aweekly salary of $125 (more than $1,600 incurrent buying power) to join his band in1945. "When he told me how much hewould pay me, I moved to New York andhave been here ever since," Haynes says. "Ihaven't stopped playing since then. I'vebeen all around the world. I've had a hell ofa career."

No kidding. As each new style of jazzwas born, Haynes was there, and complete-ly at home. A partial list of collaboratorsincludes Armstrong, Lester Young, EllaFitzgerald, Charlie Parker, TheloniousMonk, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, StanGetz, Randy Weston, Sonny Rollins, EricDolphy, Miles Davis, Oliver Nelson, SarahVaughan, Steve Lacy, Roland Kirk,Stephane Grappelli, McCoy Tyner, JimmyWitherspoon, Milt Jackson, Chick Corea,Pat Metheny, Roy Hargrove, Danilo Perez, and John, Alice and Ravi Coltrane, in eachof their respective bands. He's also ven-tured further afield, appearing with theAllman Brothers and Phish.

"I'm one of the creators who's still cre-ating, from a teenager until now," hepoints out.

Haynes' musical contributions havebeen recognized with countless awards, including a Lifetime AchievementGrammy. His elegant personal styleearned him a place on Esquire magazine'slist of best-dressed men in America in1960, alongside sartorial overachieversCary Grant, Clark Gable and Fred Astaire.

He's also the patriarch of a musicaldynasty: his sons Graham and Craig playcornet and drums, respectively; his daugh-ter, Leslie, sings; and Haynes sounds par-ticularly proud when talking about her son,Marcus Gilmore. "My grandson has turnedout to be one of the great drummers; that'samazing. When he was very young, he'dcome to rehearsals and sit close to me withhis eyes closed, almost underneath me. Henever asked me any questions; he just lis-tened to me all the time, taking it all in."

The same mode of teaching by examplehas made a tight unit of his Fountain ofYouth band: pianist Martin Bejerano, sax-ophonist Jaleel Shaw and bassist David

S P O T LKEITH JARRETTCARNEGIE HALL / MARCH 3A brilliant piano virtuoso whose voluminous discography rivals most of his jazz con-temporaries, few jazz fans are ambivalent about Keith Jarrett's performances. He's agifted player who can mesmerize listeners with his matchless touch as he explores thedynamics and timbres of the instrument but his quirky, atonal singing, groans andgrunts that sporadically accompany his piano are distracting to some. While he hasworked frequently leading a trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette for morethan three decades, a great deal of Jarrett's output consists of solo concerts, wherespontaneity is the order of the day and most of the music is composed onstage. Hisreturn to Carnegie Hall, the scene of his triumphant 2005 solo concert CD, will be anevening to remember. KD

SYBEREN VAN MUNSTERCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / MARCH 3A relative newcomer on the scene, Dutch guitarist Syberen Van Munster celebrates therelease of his debut recording Plunge for Distance. An accomplished composer, scholarand journalist, he's found numerous callings. Living in NYC for the past six years, he'sbeen a regular at guitar haven The Bar Next Door, adding collaborations with pianistBrad Mehldau, saxophonists Jacob Teichroew and Alexander "Sandi" Kuhn and vocal-ists Fleurine and Michelle Dowdy. His music extends beyond jazz—you'll hear strainsof romantic sambas and tangos, along with European chamber and orchestrated music. He'll play with a heady international ensemble, including Netherlands transplants altosaxophonist Ben Van Gelder and drummer Mark Schilders; Brazilian accordion playerVitor Goncalves who might double on the Wurlitzer electric piano; and California-bornbassist Martin Nevin. EDMAR CASTAÑEDA ZANKEL HALL / MARCH 6Paquito D'Rivera brought down the house a few years back during a Newport JazzFestival appearance with his Latin big band. Introducing Edmar Castañeda as a spe-cial guest, the leader quipped, "I don't know why I bring him out here, he always stealsthe show." Castañeda has that effect as he simultaneously plays melody, rhythm andbass lines on his Colombian harp. The result is mesmerizing. Featured in Zankel Hall'sThe Shape of Jazz series, Castañeda will present originals blending a form ofColombian folk music called llanera with samba, flamenco, jazz and Cuban styles. Histrio includes saxophonist Shlomi Cohen and drummer David Silliman and special guestCastañeda’s wife vocalist and poet Andrea Tierra singing her own compositions. KF

ALVESTER GARNETT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER / MARCH 6-7Drummer Alvester Garnett's joyful performance style permeates from the bandstandand into the hearts of the audience. Whether accompanying an ensemble or soloing ona standard, Garnett's soulful interpretations can carry any tune to new and excitingheights. Beginning his percussion studies at age 14, Garnett dedicated himself tomusic, winning third place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz DrumCompetition in 1992. The award brought him to the attention of the jazz community, with Betty Carter hiring him shortly after he graduated college. After Carter, Garnettcontinued to hone his technique in the bands of Wynton Marsalis, James Carter andCyrus Chestnut. At JALC, Garnett will be leading a tribute to Betty Carter alongsideCharenee Wade and Craig Handy, to name a few. EW

CALVIN KEYSDIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / MARCH 6-8 Performing in the tradition of Wes Montgomery, guitarist Calvin Keys has been plyinghis soulful, funky music to mainstream jazz trade for 50 years. Working in organ com-bos with Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Charles Earland among others, theOmaha native further defined his one-note style combined with block chords in LA. Hewas closely associated with Doug Carn's Black Jazz Records in the early 1970s and heteamed with Ray Charles and Taj Mahal before settling down in the Oakland area.Keys accompanied Ahmad Jamal for more than 20 years, was adopted by the Wide HivePlayers and their label recently, while Pat Metheny wrote a song in his honor. In thistribute to Montgomery, Keys is featured with music director/keyboardist BrianCharette and fellow plectrist Yotam Silberstein. MGN

L I G H TGLENDA DAVENPORTFIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH / MARCH 8Armed with a sultry and lightly smoky voice, singer Glenda Davenport shines particu-larly brightly when she delivers medium-to-up-tempo standards. In these moments,Davenport beautifully deploys an unwavering sense of swing and relaxed phrasing, gen-tly polishing melodies and lyrics without resorting to overblown sentiment or unneces-sary vocal acrobatics. Performing for the PJS Jazz Society, Davenport will be joined bya trio led by her longtime collaborator, pianist Hiroshi Yamazaki. In an era where vocalflair often trumps emotional statements and artistry, Davenport's singing is a welcomerelief, offering understatement and subtlety and enabling the music to speak for itselfwhile still swinging. Fans of Nancy Wilson would do well to check out this delightful, and underrated, talent. SH

LOU DONALDSONTRIBECA PAC / MARCH 19Lou Donaldson's career has spanned seven decades and, like most alto saxophonists whocame up in the 1940s, he was indelibly influenced by Charlie Parker. Donaldson madehis first mark on the jazz scene in the 1950s as a member of Art Blakey's Quintet withicons Clifford Brown and Horace Silver—check out that group on YouTube for proof ofhis prowess as a bopper. But Donaldson, a native of North Carolina, is as steeped in theblues as in bop, making him a mainstay of soul jazz and boogaloo in many organ com-bos. To top it off, he's also a convincing blues singer. At Highlights in Jazz he'll be thepatriarch in a Battle of the Saxes with Ken Peplowski, Grant Stewart and Peter andWill Anderson. GK

EDDIE PALMIERI 92Y / MARCH 12Pianist Eddie Palmieri's melodic pliability and willingness to experiment have helpedenhance the popularity of Latin jazz and introduce jazz audiences to a broader musicalpalette. Born in Spanish Harlem, Palmieri's fusion of styles began early with Cubanmusic and jazz pianists like Art Tatum and Bill Evans as influences. After cutting histeeth with bandleaders Eddie Forrester and Tito Rodriquez, Palmieri formed the influ-ential band La Perfecta in 1961, which changed the sound of Latin music by replacingthe trumpet section with trombones. The results of his efforts include ten GrammyAwards and a lifetime achievement award from the Latin Academy of Recording Arts &Sciences. Palmieri will be joined by an octet for Latin on Lex: A Latin Jazz Festival cel-ebrating the musical fruitfulness of that genre. EW

JOANNA WALLFISCH (WITH DAN TEPFER)SUBCULTURE / MARCH 24On her debut CD, The Origin of Adjustable Things, vocalist Joanna Wallfisch stands outas someone special. The CD features pianist Dan Tepfer and is a showcase for her strik-ing vocals and creative songwriting. The empathy between Wallfisch and Tepfer isapparent throughout the release. Wallfisch's light, versatile alto voice is alternatelyplayful, dramatic, whimsical or sensual in her lyrical compositions and she occasional-ly uses looped vocals for background harmonies. Her "This is How You Make Me Feel" isa joyous celebration of new love, accented by her infectious scatting. She also takes a freshlook at "Wild is the Wind" and "Never Let Me Go," along with a mesmerizing rendition ofTim Buckley's "Song to a Siren" and a pensive setting of Radiohead's "Creep." KD

JANICE FRIEDMANSMALLS / MARCH 9 and JAZZ AT KITANO / MARCH 18New York jazz fans should be quite familiar with native pianist/vocalist JaniceFriedman, a stalwart on the scene for many decades. Born in the Bronx and bred in NewJersey, the classically trained Friedman studied at Indiana University and moved back, first to Brooklyn, now in Manhattan. Known initially for her big band work with WoodyHerman, then Diva, she's also been teaching at Rutgers since the early 1990s. Influencesremain in the Bill Evans so-called cool school, but she has developed her own contem-porary and post-bop mainstream voicings through several recordings as a leader andhundreds of performances around the world. Her newest CD effort Live at Kitano is cel-ebrated during this showcase with Friedman working alongside bassist Ed Howard anddrummer Mark McLean (with Alexander Claffy on bass and Tony Lewis on drums atSmalls.) DRUMMER ALBERT "TOOTIE"Heath, the youngest of the famed

Heath Brothers, was born when Jimmywas nine and he started playing the saxo-phone when Tootie was six years old.Percy, best known for his years as bassistwith the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ), wasa dozen years older and left to become aTuskegee Airman when Tootie was nine. The middle brother was and still is thebiggest influence on Tootie.

Percy passed away a decade ago and theyoungest Heath is turning 80 this year."Jimmy says the 80s are the TwilightZone!" Tootie jokes from his new home indowntown Santa Fe NM as he goes on todescribe his upbringing.

"It was very simple for me: I had a pathI could follow or not follow. I heard musicmy entire life in the house," the drummersays, explaining that his mother sang inthe church choir and his father was a clar-inetist. "Jimmy was always at the pianoexploring music and harmony and otherpeople would come to the house andexchange ideas; that was the environmentI grew up in. All I had to do is figure outwhat instrument to play; and the onlyinstrument I could think of that wasn't inthe band already was the drums becauseour house wasn't big enough to have thewhole band in the house!"

Tootie took lessons from his brother'sdrummer, Charles "Specs" Wright. "Hetook me under his wing and taught me allabout rudiments and all the good stuff. Then Percy came out of the Air Force and continued on page 40

decided he didn't want to fly airplanes any-more; he wanted to be a bass player. It onlytook him a couple of years and he was goneto New York," Tootie recalls.

"Jimmy was still around and Jimmywas always there for me. He'd pull me intoprograms that I ordinarily wouldn't beinvited to. That was the path that I fol-lowed and I still do," he says. "I thinkJimmy is one of the greatest composers ofour time in jazz, or music, period. I've beenreally honored to have been in Jimmy'sschool of music."

One of the musicians who came to theHeath home in Philadelphia was JohnColtrane, whose 1957 debut album as aleader had Tootie in the rhythm section."Back then, Coltrane was just 'John.' Ofcourse he developed into an icon of music, but at that time I was fortunate to be in agroup called the Hi-Tones with ShirleyScott and her husband, Bill Carnie, andJohn. The group was more commercial–Shirley and Bill sang–” Tootie recalls. "Butwhen he had a few nights in a club, Johncalled me, Reggie Workman and McCoyTyner. So when it was time to record, hecalled on me and some other friends. Ofcourse after that, he got Elvin Jones."

Percy also had a hand in his baby broth-er's career. Tootie lived with him when hefirst moved to NYC to replace Jones ontrombonist J.J. Johnson's band in 1959;and the bassist recommended his brotherto play with the MJQ for its final twoyears. "It was very meaningful and I

Stringing alongPhiladelphia-based Monnette Sudler

loved guitar music from the get-go andalthough there was a six-string in thehouse, her mother steered her away fromit: she didn't want her daughter to "becomea rock 'n' roller." Sudler studied piano fromage eight, but the guitar continued to fasci-nate her.

The turning point came in her teenswhen Sudler heard guitars played in avariety of styles at a summer camp talentshow. Her reaction: "I'm going to do that!"And she did, starting with folk music les-sons on acoustic guitar.

"Later, I found a more jazz-orientedteacher and kept moving up the ladderwith teachers until I got to Joe Sgro, whowas the top in Philadelphia." She enrolledat Berklee College of Music in the dayswhen few females attended. "They didn'teven have a dorm for women," Sudlerrecalls. "I was generally the only one inclass. The teachers would apologize for say-ing 'you guys,' explaining that they meantme, too."

Since then, Sudler has played with jazzgreats including violinist John Blake, bassists Cecil McBee and ReggieWorkman, trombonist Steve Turre andreed players Hamiet Bluiett and GroverWashington Jr. "Everyone I worked with, Ilearned from in some way," she says. "Evenif they weren't trying to be mentors, I wasalways learning, sometimes what not to do,personally or professionally."

Sudler's early studies continue to influ-ence her compositions, in which she likesto incorporate the twists and storytellingof folk and country music with the swing-ing, rhythmic and energizing aspects of

jazz. "My music is always a little eclectic,"she says.

These days, she's no longer the onlywoman in the room. Sudler doesn't make itto New York nearly often enough, but onMarch 14 listeners can catch her withvocalist Tulivu Donna Cumberbatch atSista's Place in Brooklyn, part of the 13thannual Lady Got Chops festival. Expect tohear standards and some originals fromboth Sudler and Cumberbatch.

Produced by bassist Kim Clarke, thisyear's Lady Got Chops festival includeswell over a dozen gigs spread across fourboroughs (sorry, Staten Island) andWestchester County, featuring singerssuch as Teri Roiger and Nora McCarthy, pianists Bertha Hope and Miki Hayama, and the band Aqua Ninjaz with KimClarke. Singer Judi Silvano celebrates therelease of her new CD, My Songs, at theCornelia Street Café March 30, as part ofthe festival.

This is Sudler's second year at the festi-val: "It's great to see how many people areout there doing it. It's a lot of fun, gettingto hear new people is great." For a full fes-tival lineup check http://ladygotchops.com/2015calendar.html.

Ear and nowIt didn't take alto saxophonist Rudresh

Mahanthappa long to figure out thatthere's more to music than meets the eye."I was probably about 11 years old when Ihad the sense that what was written on thepage was only about 20 percent of thestory," he says. "I was learning by ear andknew there was a live element that hadnothing to do with the written page andwas more important." His suspicions were

continued from page 27confirmed when he discovered Bird: MasterTakes, recordings of the Charlie Parkertunes he had been learning from a book.

As a middle schooler, Mahanthappathought some of the songs were hilarious, including material recorded with guitaristTiny Grimes, such as "Romance WithoutFinance." Even as an adult, he continues toappreciate the sense of fun Bird could bringto music. "When I think of Charlie Parker,he had such amazing depth and intellect, but I always loved the sense of humor. He'dquote other tunes, take on his own vocabu-lary with humorous rearrangements ofideas, almost like a musical play on words. That makes me think he was a funny guywho could laugh at himself. Humor bridgeshumanity, it humanizes all of us."

Mahanthappa's new CD, Bird Calls(ACT), contains 13 original compositionsinspired by Parker. "Each is sourced from aparticular Parker composition or solo. Ilooked at what I liked and knew well, andthere's a lot in the detail of what he playedthat's still modern today. I looked for ele-ments, but not necessarily the obvious ele-ments. I looked for fragments, snippets andmade tunes from them," Mahanthappaexplains. "It was a fun adventure."

Though the saxophonist wrote moreParker-inspired tunes than could fit on therecording, he's moved on to other plans, including music for a dance company,Ragamala. Mahanthappa says so far hehasn't followed up on the idea of revisitingprojects. "There's a Part Two lurking in thebackground for about half of the albumsI've recorded."

But he does have a new pursuit wishlist. "I'd love to play with [guitarist] JohnMcLaughlin; I'd love to hang with him. We've never met, but I have such admira-tion and respect for his deep connectionwith South Indian music. He's a visionarywho made many things possible."Mahanthappa is also thinking of reachingout to another guitarist: Allan Holdsworth."My wheels are always turning," the saxo-phonist says with a laugh.

Mahanthappa celebrates the release ofBird Calls at Jazz Standard March 24 withAdam O'Farrill on trumpet, FrancoisMoutin on bass, David Virelles, piano andJordan Perlson, drums.

woman is excited about a new directionshe's taking with her Cuban-influencedlarge ensemble New Yor-Uba. "There's newmusic, an evolution of music we have beenplaying and an evolution in personnel. That's one of the most interesting aspectsof the new face of the ensemble, which will

give it freshness, new heights and newdimensions."

Longtime followers of New Yor-Uba andRosewoman's small group, Quintessence, are likely to notice a difference in bothbands. "The new horn players for New Yor-Uba are very much in line with the hornplayers from Quintessence over the years,"she explains. "And in the process of findingcertain voices for New Yor-Uba, I foundnew voices for Quintessence. So now I'mvery much looking forward to bring thatlong-running small ensemble back."

Among Rosewoman's new material is"Alabanza," which will have its U.S. debutwhen New Yor-Uba plays Dizzy's ClubCoca-Cola this month. The piece was firstperformed in December when she traveledto Cuba to premiere it with ArturoO'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra at theHavana Jazz Festival.

Three trips to Cuba, including two in thepast year, have enhanced a lifetime ofabsorbing Cuban traditions. "I've studiedwith masters in the folkloric world andeach trip deepens my connection to thespiritual basis of New Yor-Uba's music,"Rosewoman says. "It's deeply inspiring onmany levels and very much in keeping withwhat I'm supposed to be doing musically."

Rosewoman began immersing herself inCuban music and traditions while still inher teens. She describes her relationship toCuba as organic. "It's a natural connectionfor me, maybe because my roots on mymother's side can be traced back to Spainand North Africa."

The normalization of U.S./Cuban rela-tions was announced during her mostrecent stay there. "It was a special momentto be in Cuba, to experience the hope, excitement and joy the people felt."

Catch New Yor-Uba at The Egg inAlbany March 21, and at Dizzy's March 27-29. The dates have an added significancefor Rosewoman, since they come on theheels of her March 19 birthday. "It's all acelebration for me," she says, "performingany time around my birthday is a gift."

Musician-Producer's CornerAs someone who took up the electric

bass in high school and waited untilhalfway through college to tackle theacoustic bass, Mark Wade's back storymight not immediately indicate a futurecareer as a versatile musical voice andchampion of new music. However, withperformance credentials including stintswith Jimmy Heath, Don Byron, SharonIsbin, the Key West Symphony and theJanacek Symphony, Wade has proven to beprecisely that.

Equally comfortable in classical musicand jazz, Wade's multifaceted career hasenabled him to develop unique insightsinto the music industry, that have inspiredhim to take on producer and impresarioroles through his non-profit organizationNew Music Horizons.

To hear Wade describe it, his musicalorigins were "a very backwards road," as heslowly wound his way toward taking upacoustic bass and approaching multiplegenres of music. "It's a different road fromwhat most people take," he recalls "Whenmost kids were hitting 19 or 20 and hadbeen playing for maybe ten years, particu-larly in classical music, I was instead a col-lege jazz major who had started on electricbass! I started playing classical music as ahobby. When I got out of college, I joined acommunity orchestra, so my hobby turnedinto a part-time job, which then turned intoan absolute part of what I do as a profes-sional musician."

While a circuitous path, Wade finds acommon thread in his continual search topursue difficult challenges in music. Thisdesire led him from rock into jazz and, ulti-mately, into incorporating classical musicinto his working repertoire.

A founding member of the Queens JazzOverground, a collective-styled organiza-tion focused on presenting concerts, devel-oping artists and building audiences, Wadehas engaged heavily on the arts adminis-tration side in order to promote new music.

Moving on from the Queens JazzOverground, Wade has since found a newpath through New Music Horizons which isdedicated to supporting emerging com-posers in the classical and jazz fields bycurating high-quality performances anddeveloping dedicated audience members.Wade's career-long work across genresuniquely qualifies him for this vision.

"Playing classical music and jazz, andplaying new music in both genres, you see

the difficulty artists can have in connectingwith new audiences," he explains. "And'connecting' doesn't just mean getting peo-ple to show up to the gig, it means intro-ducing audiences to new compositions andgetting them to come back. So this organi-zation is here not only to promote emergingcomposers at legitimate cultural institu-tions, but also to engage the audiences andget them deeper into music."

The impact of Wade's efforts has cer-tainly been felt, not least of all by Wadehimself. February 2015 marked the releaseof Wade's debut album, Event Horizon, anoffering that beautifully embodies andreflects the bassist's focus on engenderingnew music. Comprising almost exclusivelyWade's original compositions, EventHorizon is a trio record —with TimHarrison on piano and Scott Neumann ondrums—highlighting a versatile and imag-inative musical voice interested in show-casing compositional chops rather thansimple head charts.

"I always wanted to wait until I hadsomething creative to contribute, and aband and music I wanted to record," heexplains. "While I was in residence atFlushing Town Hall, it all came together. The trio I put together for that residencybecame the band I decided to record."

Indeed, the trio CD serves as a logicalcontinuation of Wade's passions in hismusic and in his arts advocacy role."There's very much a connection here,"Wade notes. "I'm running an organizationdedicated to promoting original music, andon my record, I'm playing my own music. That can be a bit unusual for a debutrecord, but this is something I feel stronglyabout. The work with New Music Horizonsbrought back my desire to compose."

B A C K S T A G E PA S SJAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROW

Bill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can befound at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com

along with many interesting photos and links. While I was on the road with Art Farmer in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet back in 1959, Art

told me about his early years in jazz. He loved Dizzy Gillespie's playing, and tried to soundlike him. But there wasn't a lot of work for bebop trumpet players in Los Angeles at thattime, and in order to make a living as a musician, Art played with blues bands like JohnnyOtis and Big Joe Turner. Turner didn't care for bebop, preferring backgrounds in the style ofpianists like Pete Johnson and Jay McShann. Art said when Turner first gave him a solo, thenext blues chorus he sang was: "Play me the boogie! Don't play no bebop for me!"

Art said he came to appreciate Turner more after he left his band. But he was happy toland a chair with Lionel Hampton. "Lionel would shuck and jive to keep the audience happy,"said Art, "but when he got on the bandstand, he always came to swing. I learned a lot fromthat man. And bebop was okay with him. He let me play however I wanted."

By the time Art joined Mulligan, he had found his own voice on the trumpet, and he wenton to become a great player with a sound all his own.

One of my favorite things about photo-graphing at the Portland Jazz Festival isthe chance to observe and photograph themusicians as they prepare for their per-formances. Watching the great Roy Haynesset up before his gig at the 2012 festival wasa lesson in how the masters of the jazz worldoperate. Even at 87, Haynes arrived early, sat down at the drums and set up. A lessonin how he stays so young!

Solivan photo by Gulnara Khamatova, Anderson by John Abbott, Mayhew by Ulysses Beato.

MIKE LEE MAXWELL'S / MARCH 3 and HAT CITY KITCHEN / EVERY WEDNESDAYMike Lee was a high school student in Cleveland OH when he heard saxophonistJohnny Griffin in concert. It moved the young saxophonist to make music his life. Theversatility of Lee's musical language led to work with Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, theWoody Herman Orchestra, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Michelle Rosewoman, OliverLake and Maria Schneider. Lee's tenor was part of Wallace Roney's re-creation of thelost big band charts of Wayne Shorter. Sparks fly at Hat City Kitchen where Leehosts a weekly jam session and he passes along these experiences as coordinator ofmusic programming for Jazz House Kids. Originals, and tunes by Wayne Shorter,Kenny Dorham and Thelonious Monk, are featured when Lee joins pianist BrandonMcCune, bassist Chris Berger and drummer Chris Beck.

CLIFTON ANDERSONUNION COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER / MARCH 28As a young boy, Clifton Anderson's mother took him to see a Broadway production ofThe Music Man. He came away not with 76 trombones, but just one, given to him byhis uncle, Sonny Rollins. Manhattan School of Music and internal combustion led towork with McCoy Tyner, Frank Foster, Stevie Wonder, Slide Hampton and more thanthree decades alongside Rollins on stages around the world. On his latest album, AndSo We Carry On (Daywood), Anderson slides from standards to originals, or a visit tothe islands, with single lines, smears and colors showing a wealth of ideas. In anevening that also features the Jazz House Kids Ensemble, Anderson has evergreensand new pieces written for Sonny Rollins and Kimati Dinizulu with his group, includ-ing pianist Tadakata Unno, bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Steve Williams.

MARIANNE SOLIVANHYATT NEW BRUNSWICK / MARCH 25Christian McBride said of singer Marianne Solivan, "she's sensitive; she's powerful;she's funky; she's subtle." When Solivan belts "life can be mighty monotonous" fromOscar Brown Jr's "Hum Drum Blues" on her album Spark (Hipnotic), you get thedeepest down feeling that she's not about to let that malady invade her life or hermusic. Quickly becoming one of the most buzzed about singers on the New York jazzscene, Solivan combines the swing of Ella Fitzgerald, the daring of Betty Carter, thecomfort of Carmen McRae, with a forward motion that has had her sharing stageswith Roy Hargrove, Steve Lacy and Jeremy Pelt. Solivan will sing standards and thespark of her originals with guitarist Ethan Mann, bassist Mathew Parrish and drum-mer Anthony Pinciotti.

VIRGINIA MAYHEW HOTOKE / MARCH 12JazzTimes magazine describes tenor saxophonist Virginia Mayhew as "Jazz for thepeople...shot through with the blues, human with body heat, alive with many emo-tions. She is vividly expressive with intriguing ideas." It's been demonstratedthrough her varied work with Kenny Barron, Al Grey, Frank Zappa, James Brown,Chico O'Farrill and Ingrid Jensen, in addition to Mayhew's own recordings, includ-ing Mary Lou Williams - The Next 100 Years (Renma), selected by Downbeat as oneof the best releases of 2012. Bored by convention, Mayhew constantly reinvents, whether a Monk melody, a Sonny Rollins classic, a dress up of a standard or herextensive trunk of originals. It's all this and Mary Lou too, with keyboardist RobertaPiket, bassist Harvie S and drummer Victor Jones.

Q. Anything in your life that rivalsyour love, dedication to music?

A. There really isn't—though I lovemany people—it's the thing I love doingmore than anything else.

One gig or recording of yours you can'tshake?

The most recent gig I played. It was atrio with two amazing improvisers: NicoleMitchell on flutes and Joelle Leandre ondouble bass. We played completely sponta-neous music, and it was one of the most

magical and powerful sets I've ever played.Favorite place in the world to play,

public or private? So many: the Redwood Jazz Alliance in

Arcata CA; the Athenaeum in La Jolla CA;the Outpost in Albuquerque; theEremitage in Schwaz, Austria; to name afew...all great vibes.

How have your recorded music listen-ing habits changed over the years?

I've always loved many different kindsof music, but I'm listening to more andmore music outside of jazz, whether musicfrom other cultures, new music or variouskinds of popular music. Though I still loveto hear what's happening today in jazz andimprovised music, especially from youngerartists.

What do you struggle with in yourcreative life?

Finding enough undisrupted time towork on music.

If you were starting out now, wouldyou change anything?

I wish I had been a bit easier on myself, but everything led me to where I am now,and I couldn't be more grateful for that.

Your favorite or most importantrecording of yours to you?

It's usually the most recent recordingand I'm super excited about the new SnowyEgret record. But I think my solo record-ing, Life Carries Me This Way, is special tome because I'm really myself.

What's the last truly great piece ofmusic you listened to live or recorded?

I just heard Henry Threadgill's newestensemble, Double-Up, perform some of themost beautiful music I've ever heard, espe-cially his tribute to Butch Morris.

What are a few pieces of music thatmade you the person or musician you aretoday?

"Air Above Mountains/BuildingsWithin" by Cecil Taylor; "How Long Blues"by Jimmy Yancey; "Carolina Shout" byJames P. Johnson; "Mikrokosmos" by BélaBartok; "Sadness" by Ornette Coleman.

I wish I had been a biteasier on myself, buteverything led me towhere I am now, and Icouldn't be more grateful

for that.

HAYNES...continued from page 21Wong. "I don't say much to them, they justgo by what's happening. If they're with me,they're great." At one time, their agesadded up to less than that of their leaderbut Haynes points out: "Sometimes theyact older than me."

Haynes is looking forward to his mile-stone birthday and isn't daunted by turn-ing 90. "I'm fortunate to be talking like I'mtalking, sitting here with the sun shiningthrough my window—it's like Thanksgi-ving." He sounds healthy and content, fullof gusto and still seizing life with bothhands. Asked if he'll celebrate his birthdaywith cake or cocktails, Haynes laughs andresponds, "Why not both?"

Roy Haynes 90th birthday gig atthe Blue Note March 13-15 featuresspecial guests including guitarist PatMetheny, bassist Christian McBride, trumpeter Roy Hargrove and tapdancer Savion Glover.

HEATH...continued from page 25learned a lot about playing acousticallywith vibes and piano and bass without anyamplification," Heath says, adding thatpianist John Lewis was influential in shap-ing his sound with certain cymbals anddrums.

Before moving to Los Angeles in themid-1970s, Heath spent a few years inDenmark where he played with many ex-patriots including pianist AbdullahIbrahim, who is still living in Germany butno longer touring. "He was one of the mostimportant people I've ever played with; heplays a serious brand of South Africanmusic," Heath says. "I'd love to play withhim again, but it's time to play with theimportant people of today—Ethan Iversonand Ben Street—and I'm very happy to dothat!

"I've been following Ethan and his workwith The Bad Plus for years," Heath con-tinues. "And I've become very good friendswith their drummer, Dave King."However, it wasn't until 2009 that Heathfirst played with Iverson and Street, whenthey accompanied Lee Konitz at theIridium. The trio has since cut threealbums. The new one, Philadelphia Beat(Sunnyside), was recorded in Philly andfeatures tunes as diverse as "Bag's Groove"by MJQ's Milt Jackson and GloriaGaynor's "I Will Survive."

Drummer Tootie Heath with EthanIverson, piano, and Ben Street, bass, will celebrate the release ofPhiladelphia Beat at the VillageVanguard March 3-8. Both theVanguard and Heath turn 80 thisyear.
