WE'RE ACCUSTOMED TO HEA- ring a certain repertoire from jazz

vocalists. The classic American PopularSongbook, lyrics to jazz standards, theblues: they all fit with our image. The twosingers whose new albums comprise thisWinning Spins—René Marie and NicoleHenry—both expand their palettes beyondthe confines of jazz, embracing aspects ofcabaret, soul, R&B and pop-rock. In addi-tion, both are tribute albums: Marie's hon-oring the stage, film and cabaret iconEartha Kitt and Henry's paying homage tothe hit songs of the 1970s.

I Wanna Be Evil: With Love to EarthaKitt, René Marie (Motéma) explores thesensuality and playfulness of Kitt's stagepersona with a jazz sensibility. Which isnot to say that Marie can't be just aswickedly seductive and sexy as Kitt, if notmore so. Her purring and bedroom moan-ing on "Oh, John" is definitely R—, if notX—rated. And her sultry come ons and bla-tantly salacious whoops in "Come On-A MyHouse" are a far cry from RosemaryClooney's wholesome hit version, moreclosely suggesting pre-production codeMae West.

Gene Krupa's "Sing Sing Sing" beat vieswith the big backbeat of burlesque on "IWanna Be Evil," Marie hinting at EthelMerman on the last chorus. Marie's oneoriginal, and the closing track, "Weekend,"is a steamy sex fantasy—shades of"Gray"?—told from the viewpoint of a frus-trated wife alone for the weekend.

But the album is a lot more than mere-ly a big helping of sexiness, for then itwould just be a rehash of Sylvia or SergeGainsbourg. For one thing, Marie sharesthe spotlight here with some topflightmusicians, including her estimable trio,Experiment in Truth, led by pianist KevinBales. Also appearing intermittently, sometimes all together, are trumpeterEtienne Charles, reedman AdrianCunningham and trombonist WycliffeGordon. They all get off to a blazing starton the opener, "I'd Rather Be Burned As AWitch," at a furious swing tempo thatMarie negotiates with aplomb, even man-aging to stretch out the first syllable of"weave a spell" without losing momentumwhile Gordon more than keeps up the paceon his blistering solo.

Cole Porter's "Let's Do It," usually doneas a coyly seductive ballad, is given a soulmakeover here, equipped with a bluesybass line and backbeat for Marie'sassertively sassy approach. All three horns

solo on a Latin-tinged "Peel Me A Grape"and the clarinet weaves through a sexilysighing "C'est Si Bon." A muted trumpetadds to the seductively winking "SantaBaby," Marie playfully drawling and sen-sually extending "appreciative" to double-entendre lengths. The singer says thatwhile recording "a wild banshee spirit pos-sessed me." Hearing her, you'll agree.

So Good, So Right, Nicole Henry Live(Banister), the singer's homage to some ofthe memorable voices and songs of the1970s, was recorded live at the now-defunct Manhattan cabaret clubFeinstein's at Loews Regency. She'sbacked by jazz stalwarts Kevin Hays, piano and Fender Rhodes; Adam Rogers, guitar; Vicente Archer, bass, and ClarencePenn, drums. The arrangements balancebetween tight pop origins and looser jazzinterpretations, while allowing some solospace for piano and guitar.

Henry has a splendid and extremelyadaptable instrument; her chameleon-likevoice convincingly channels GladysKnight, Stephanie Mills and ArethaFranklin. After beginning "Neither One ofUs" with jazzy intimacy, she morphs intoKnight on the climactic chorus, right downto the trademark tremors. And onFranklin's "Spirit in the Dark," she takesus to church with a rousing finale, just likeAretha. Henry has an admirable commandof 1970s soul singing conventions, themelismas and pumping iron aspects ofsoaring vocals, using them to advantage onsuch numbers as Brenda Russell's titletrack, "Home" from "The Wiz" and TheCommodore's (not Anita Baker's same-named hit) "Sweet Love." She finds bothjazz subtleties and passion in JamesTaylor's "Fire and Rain," brings a big beatsoul vibe to Joni Mitchell's "Big YellowTaxi" while still managing a hint ofMitchell's bright high tone and makes BobMarley's "Waiting in Vain" a post-moderntorch song.

When Henry scales back from the soulwailing, her restraint is just as rewarding. The Elton John hit "Sorry Seems to Be theHardest Word" eschews histrionics, crooned with aching vulnerability withonly piano accompaniment. In short: hitsfrom the 1970s never sounded so good.

René Marie debuts her tribute toEartha Kitt at Jazz Standard, Nov.21-24. Nicole Henry has a SundayBrunch Residency at the Blue Notethroughout November.

TIA FULLERABYSSINIAN BAPTIST CHURCH / NOVEMBER 3Angelic Warrior is the title of Tia Fuller's current album on Mack Avenue and it's nooxymoron when applied to the talented saxophonist-flutist. Her tone, especially on altosax, may be on the angelic side, but her playing makes her a definite warrior, as herattitude and improvisational ideas, as well as her rhythmic sense, are staunch andhard-driving. Fuller has been better known for her work with more famous leaders, including pop superstar Beyonce's all-female back up band, and bassist-singer andGrammy New Artist winner Esperanza Spaulding's crossover band, Radio MusicSociety. She has also played with such jazz heavyweights as drummers Terri LyneCarrington, Ralph Peterson and T. S. Monk. At this Jazz Vespers she'll be front andcenter in a trio. GK

ADAM KOLKERCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / NOVEMBER 21A Manhattan native who studied at the University of Miami as well as the NewEngland Conservatory, reedman Adam Kolker first came to prominence playing onseveral Ray Barretto CDs. He has recorded or played with the Vanguard JazzOrchestra, Fred Hersch, Maria Schneider, Bruce Barth, Marty Ehrlich, John Hébertand Bobby Previte. Kolker plays multiple instruments, including tenor, baritone andsoprano saxophones, flute and alto flute, clarinet and bass clarinet. His most recent CDis Reflections, issued by Sunnyside in 2011. The gig will include three-quarters of theScott Wendholt/Adam Kolker Quartet focusing on music from their upcoming FreshSound CD AndThem with Wendholt on trumpet, drummer Victor Lewis and JayAnderson, a substitute for their usual bassist Ugonna Okegwo. KD

JASON MORANVILLAGE VANGUARD / NOVEMBER 26 - DECEMBER 1A jazz pianist who is steeped in tradition yet celebrated as cutting edge, Jason Moranhas an enviable résumé for a 30-something. He's one of a handful of jazz musicians tobe named a MacArthur Fellow, commonly called the "genius grant," and is theKennedy Center artistic advisor for jazz. He also scored a hat trick in the latestDownbeat Critics Poll: Jazz Artist, Jazz Album and Pianist of the Year. He's workedand recorded with legendary tenor saxophonists Charles Lloyd and the late SamRivers, staged a multi-media tribute to Thelonious Monk's 1959 Town Hall concert andrecorded a Fats Waller tribute. At this gig he'll be leading his trio of more than adecade: The Bandwagon, with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits. GK

ETIENNE CHARLESSUBCULTURE / NOVEMBER 8Hailing from Trinidad, trumpeter Etienne Charles stands as one of the music's mostcharismatic advocates for what he calls the Creole center of jazz. Pointing to jazz'sever-evolving fusion of rhythms, cultures and repertoire, Charles has embraced a wideperspective in his own efforts, drawing not only on the music of jazz pioneers, but alsothe works of Fela Kuti, Lord Kitchener and many others. Charles' latest album, CreoleSoul, illustrates this vision as it reflects the classic works of disparate greats likeThelonious Monk and Bob Marley and juxtaposes them with Charles' own inventiveand imminently catchy originals. At Subculture, he will be joined by altoist BrianHogans, guitarist Alex Wintz, pianist Victor Gould, bassist Michael Olatuja and drum-mer John Davis. SH

STEVE LEHMAN JAZZ GALLERY / NOVEMBER 8Alto saxophonist/composer Steve Lehman has elevated his jazz caché from rising starto a member of the elite cutting edge in modern creative improvised music. Comingback from the West Coast before going on a Midwestern tour this fall, Lehman makesan appearance in NYC with his exciting, spontaneous octet. Pending a new recordingto be released in 2014, the ensemble still resonates from the success of its 2009 CDTravail, Transformation & Flow (Pi), named by the New York Times as the best jazzCD of that year. This all-star working band features trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson,Jose Davila on tuba, tenor saxophonist Mark Shim, trombonist Tim Albright, vibra-phonist Chris Dingman, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, with theleader adding in live electronics. SACHAL STUDIOS ORCHESTRAROSE THEATER / NOVEMBER 22-23How about a Pakistani viewpoint on the musical style of Dave Brubeck through songsby the Beatles, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Edu Lobo, Henry Mancini, Stevie Wonder, PatMetheny and R.E.M.? This is what the Sachal Studios Orchestra attempt in their newCD Jazz and All That. In concert to promote the album release, this should be a fasci-nating display in multiculturalism filtered through the concept and inspiration of a trueAmerican jazz icon. In collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center, the ensemble is beingfilmed for a documentary expected to be out in 2014. The band features a large group ofstring players and vocalists, Nafees Ahmad Khan on sitar, Ballu Khan at the tablas,Rafiq Ahmed and Najaf Ali playing dholaks and special guest Wynton Marsalis. MGN

JACKY TERRASSONDIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / NOVEMBER 7-10The son of an American mother and French father, Jacky Terrasson's star has soaredsince winning the Thelonious Monk Piano Competition in 1993. The Berklee alumsigned with Blue Note, recording a series of acclaimed CDs between 1995 and 2007 forthe label, displaying formidable technique interpreting familiar standards and jazzfavorites, along with his gift for writing striking originals. After signing with UniversalFrance, Terrasson dramatically expanded his repertoire for his 2012 CD Gouache toinclude works ranging from Erik Satie to John Lennon and Amy Winehouse, in additionto standards and originals. His quartet, which includes bassist Burniss Earl Travis II,drummer Justin Faulkner and percussionist Minino Garay, will be joined by rising starvocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant for the final night. JOSHUA SHNEIDER AND LOVE SPEAKS ORCHESTRASHAPESHIFTER LAB / NOVEMBER 19The elements of the modern jazz orchestra have never been more detailed and inspiredthan through the creative lens of composer/saxophonist Joshua Shneider. Encompassingtonal colors found in swing, Latin and blues traditions, Shneider's musical output hasreintroduced the excitement a jazz orchestra has to offer. In addition to his composi-tional prowess, Joshua's saxophone chops have graced the music of singer FelixCavaliere, guitarist Geoff Muldaur and numerous others. He brings his band TheJoshua Shneider Love Speaks Orchestra to the Shapeshifter Lab in celebration of theirself-titled release on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records. The group, featuring singerSaundra Williams and guitarist Dave Stryker, will perform cuts from the album for anexciting night that certainly won't disappoint. EW

RICHARD SUSSMANSMALLS / NOVEMBER 23In the 1970s, pianist Richard Sussman emerged as a fresh face on the scene through hisalbums Free Fall and Tributaries for the Inner City labels, which have been reissuedon Double Time. After many years as a professor at the Manhattan School of Music, anda sideman for Lionel Hampton, Randy Brecker and Simon Shaheen among many oth-ers, he returns to this live performance in a big way via recording Continuum for theOrigin label. Sussman will play originals old and new and his formidable arrangementsof the music of the late Hank Jones, who at one point was his mentor and good friend.Included in the Sussman quintet is trumpeter Scott Wendholt, tenor saxophonist RichPerry, bassist Mike McGuirk and drummer Anthony Pinciotti. GARY MORGAN AND PANAMERICANAZINC BAR / NOVEMBER 18Hot Latin-jazz big bands are not quite as prevalent since the era of Tito Puente, thePalladium or Copacabana. Composer/arranger Gary Morgan brings back those good olddays with a fresh approach and vibrancy few bands can match. Born in Santiago, Chilebefore moving to Toronto and then NYC, Morgan has long been an advocate of bop, bigbands, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian combinations. His studies with Herb Pomeroy, andsubstantial workshop experience with Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam, keeps thiscombination of elements ever evolving. Included in the current, hefty 21-piece version ofPanamericana, founded in 1997, are two French horns, plenty of percussionists, pianistBob Quartana, trumpeters Seneca Black and John Bailey, saxophonists NorbertStachel, Ben Kono and Matt Hong and vocalist Richard Boukas. DIANNE REEVESEXIT 0 JAZZ FESTIVAL / NOVEMBER 8Dianne Reeves says, "I sing the things that feel good inside of me." For the four-timeGrammy winner, this approach has moved audiences around the world to become truefans, with no need for the press nudging machinery of today. Sure, she listened to thegreat singers and players as she was coming up, but with uniqueness as the drivingforce. Reeves does this nightly by being blessed with an instrument and a curiositythat celebrate improvisation, which lends her comfort level to working extensively withthe Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, recording with the Chicago Symphony, tributesto Sarah Vaughan and Billy Strayhorn, appearing in movies or in a touring foursometribute to Nina Simone. In Cape May, Reeves will simply sing what feels good inside, and give festival goers a preview of her 2014 release Beautiful Life.

VICTOR JONES CLINTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL / NOVEMBER 2Growing up in Newark, Victor Jones' first brush with music was the trumpet. He soonput it down and picked up the brushes and sticks, eventually becoming one of theworld's outstanding drummers. Jones has spent time-making with Stan Getz, LouDonaldson, Richie Cole, Chaka Khan and Woody Shaw, among many others, takinghim from Newark to the Kennedy Center to Royal Albert Hall. With a strong founda-tion Jones is constantly looking ahead. "I always try to stay in touch with new trendsin music. Jazz runs the risk of losing its edge otherwise," he says. Victor Jones' uni-verse of rhythm includes bebop, hip-hop, R&B and soul. Jones will bring the beats toMaplewood for a WBGO Kids Concert with pianist Dylan Meek, bassist Alex Blake andvocalist Taiko.

AKIKO TSURUGAMAKEDA / NOVEMBER 7Lou Donaldson calls her "Queen of the Organ." Jazz Times says "she's the real deal."Since coming from Osaka, Japan to the U.S. a dozen years ago, organist Akiko Tsurugaspread her wings, with sold-out appearances at top clubs and three CDs; with the lat-est, Sakura (American Showplace) getting Top Ten attention. Tsuruga has been work-ing toward today since age three, when her parents bought her a piano. HearingJimmy Smith's record The Cat led Tsuruga to become wholly familiar with the greaseof the greats including her mentor Dr. Lonnie Smith. On stage it's a spirited approach:from a slow boil, to make the walls sweat, to go to church. She does it all with a pres-ence that makes you glad you're in the audience. Tsuruga will be joined by tenor sax-ophonist Myron Walden, guitarist Matt Chertkoff and drummer Tommy Campbell.

PAQUITO D'RIVERADORTHAAN'S PLACE AT NJPAC / NOVEMBER 10When you approach the front door of Paquito D'Rivera's New Jersey home, you see themin the window—two Grammy awards. There are nine more inside, the result of hard workwhich started at age ten playing with the National Theater Orchestra in his birthplaceof Havana, Cuba. He would found the ground-breaking group Irakere; and, with DizzyGillespie, originate the United Nation Orchestra, showcasing the Latin and Caribbeaninfluences with jazz. His dedication to jazz on both alto sax and clarinet has producedmore than 30 albums as leader. When given a Lifetime Achievement award in 1991,D'Rivera remarked, "What is this? Am I done?" He's not, and for this brunch-time per-formance he'll bring his astonishing skills and his sense of humor to play with pianist AlonYavnai, trumpeter Diego Urcola, bassist Oscar Stagnaro and drummer Mark Walker.

SAXOPHONIST GARY BARTZ HADa strong musical connection through his

family—his parents owned a jazz club andhis uncle knew many of the jazz musicianswho came to his hometown, Baltimore.Bartz began alto saxophone lessons whilein elementary school, recalling, "My par-ents didn't play instruments, but therewas always music at home. I loved LouisJordan's sound, but then I heard CharlieParker. Once I heard Bird at the age of six,I knew what I wanted to do in life.

"During high school I met Max Roachand other players. I sat in with Max whenI was around 14; he gave me his phonenumber and told me to look him up when Igot to New York. I did so when I arrivedand he looked out for me," Bartz says. Heattended Peabody in Baltimore and thenleft home to study at Juilliard, majoring inclassical composition for two years. Bartzspent many evenings checking out jazzclubs.

A query about working with CharlesMingus provoked a chuckle. Bartz quipped,"It was dicey; you never knew what youwere going to get with Mingus. He led animprovised big band at the Village Gate.He would send word out inviting us to play, though I didn't get paid. I worked in his bigband and in small groups for Jazzmobile.Eric Dolphy was in the band. I startedpracticing with Eric every Wednesday, playing duets. He and I didn't find manymusicians who liked to do that."

Although Bartz was living in NYC, itwas a trip home that led to his recordingdebut. "My parents bought a club inBaltimore in 1960 and I started commutingdown on weekends. I joined Max Roach fortwo weeks there. When Art Blakey playedthe club, my friend John Hicks was hispianist and he was trying to get me in theband. John Gilmore was leaving, so my dadcalled and invited me to come sit in withthem. I already knew Lee Morgan, whowas also in the band. Art liked me and Ijoined him right there." Bartz made hisrecording debut on Blakey's Soulfinger in1965 and appeared on Max Roach'sMembers Don't Get Weary in 1968.

The saxophonist's longest working rela-tionship is with McCoy Tyner, whom hemet in 1960 when the pianist was in theJazztet. "I forget how I ended up workingwith him. Anytime that John Coltrane wasplaying, I was there and I'd talk to McCoy.After he went out on his own, I startedplaying with him in the mid-sixties." Theyhave shared the stage and recorded togeth-er many times over the past four-plusdecades.

Bartz resents it when people say he isimprovising. "The greatest soloists werenot improvisers. They were composing onthe spot, based on 30 or 40 years of study. When you put a solo together, you musthave a great beginning, great thematicmaterial and a great ending. You don'tplay off the top of your head, which is whatimprovising means. You follow the ideas asthey evolve and don't let them go," he says."I approach writing songs and playingsolos the same way. My approach willchange each night, but I've thought aboutthem long before I play them."

The invitation to join the quartetSphere, which had disbanded after thedeath of Charlie Rouse in 1988, is a sourceof pride for Bartz. The reconstituted group, with founding members Kenny Barron,Buster Williams and Ben Riley, added thesaxophonist in 1997 and the band touredthrough 2002, producing two recordings.Bartz laments, "For some reason, we didn'tpursue it as we should have; it was such agreat band. We released one, but I thinkthe second is even better, though it's stillin the can."

Bartz has several projects planned forrelease on his OYO label. "There is a sec-ond Coltrane Rules album, plus a WoodyShaw recording made during Christmasand New Years of 1986 at a Baltimore clubI was booking. Then Larry Willis and I areworking on a classical composition I'vearranged into more of a solo compositionalpiece." At Smoke, the quartet will includehis regular bassist, James King, and drum-mer Greg Bandy. Sullivan Fortner, arecent graduate of Oberlin where Bartzteaches, will substitute for his regularpianist, Barney McCall. "I'd like to seeSullivan get more notoriety."

Gary Bartz will play at Smoke onNov. 1-2 with pianist SullivanFortner, bassist James King and GregBandy on the drums.

TRUMPETER CLAUDIO RODITIhas been blending jazz with samba and

other rhythms from his native Brazilthroughout his career as a fine bandleader,first-call bebop trumpeter and big bandsection player. He has 17 recordings as aleader and many others as a sideman.Roditi also remains busy as a jazz compos-er and an educator involved in high school-and college-level clinics and a variety ofworkshops.

The Brazilian side of his playing will bein the spotlight at Jazz at Kitano. He willbe featured with three other faculty mem-bers from the Samba Meets Jazz workshopthat's held in Bar Harbor ME. One of sev-eral workshops that grew out of the GuitarIntensives summer program that AliceSchiller began at the College of theAtlantic in 2002, the Samba Meets Jazzworkshop, added an international sessionin Rio de Janeiro and Paraty Brazil threeyears ago.

Blending musical fire with deep feelingand precise articulation, Roditi has been amainstay on the New York jazz scene formore than 35 years. Clifford Brown andLee Morgan have been among his strongeststylistic influences.

Roditi came to the United States in 1970from his native Rio to study at the BerkleeCollege of Music and launch his career. Inthe earliest years, when based in eitherBoston or the Big Apple, he performed withsome of his trumpet heroes. In Boston hewas able to sit in with Roy Eldridge, ClarkTerry, Howard McGhee and Bobby Hackettwhen they came to town. "The only onethat I regret I never saw live was LeeMorgan. He didn't play Boston that firstyear after I came from Brazil. I never got tosee him before he was killed in 1971."

After moving to New York in 1976, hebecame a section player in trumpeter DizzyGillespie's United Nation Orchestra, anexperience he cherishes for opening manydoors for him. "I got to play with FreddieHubbard and Red Rodney. We were thethree trumpets on a Slide Hampton-led bigband tour to Europe to pay tribute to Dizzywhile he was sick," Roditi says. "It was justunbelievable. To be playing alongside Fred-die—one of my greatest idols—was a gas."

A two-time Grammy nominee—in 1995for his "Symphonic Bossa Nova" and in2010 as Best Latin Jazz Album forBrazilliance X4—Roditi may be one of thefew common threads between Gillespie,Horace Silver, Herbie Mann, Gary Bartz,Michael Franks and McCoy Tyner. He wasa sideman on recording projects between1987 and 2007 on which they were the

leaders. "I have been very fortunate inbeing able to work with straight-aheadjazz, Latin and Brazilian musicians,"Roditi says.

The Kitano gig, billed as a Samba MeetsJazz Open House, is a performance andjam session-style party to celebrate the six-year-old workshop. Roditi will performwith Samba Meets Jazz artistic director, bassist Nilson Matta, and faculty col-leagues Matt King and Fernando Sacibefore a jam session with New York-areaworkshop participants.

Roditi taught at the Bar Harbor work-shop for the first time this year and hasaccepted an invitation to return in 2014."They are specializing in Brazilian musicbut there's also a little bit of Latin jazz, which involves Cuban and Puerto Ricanmusic. This program is a workshop mostlyfor adults. A lot of people are not profes-sional musicians but they want to learnhow to play these different styles of music. They have a lot of curiosity," Roditi says."One of the things that inspires a teacheris to have someone sincerely interested inwhat you have to say and ask you ques-tions. It gives you more ideas, also."

Roditi, now 67, says he has been spend-ing a lot of his time writing new composi-tions, some of them for his newest brassacquisition, a piccolo trumpet (best knownin Baroque music), to supplement hisflugelhorn and rotary-valve trumpet. "It isanother voice, another color," he says. "Thepiccolo is literally half the size in lengththan the regular trumpet. Consequently, it

A way with wordsTo keep your material unique, some-

times you've got to write your own lyricsand arrangements, says the San Francisco-based singer Madeline Eastman. She'sfound that even existing lyrics can use atweak on occasion. "Certainly, some thingsfall trippingly off your tongue, but othersfeel awkward. That's the lovely thing abouthaving the freedom in the jazz genre torephrase it so it makes sense, while beingrespectful of the melody. It has got to bebelievable," Eastman says. "CarmenMcRae was a master of that. She was theguiding light for me when I started. Sheresonated with me and still does." Whenlistening to McRae's way with a lyric, "Ibelieved her more than any other singer. Iheard the truth when I listened to her."Eastman's always discovering new materi-al. "I follow my nose—I'll research a songsomeone else is singing, listen to othermusic by that singer, listen to other singerswho have done the same tunes. Before youknow it, I'm 25 steps removed from thesimple little ditty I was trying to wrap mybrain around." The inspiration to writelyrics usually comes from "listening to areal bitchin' instrumental," such as HoraceSilver's "Creation," Art Blakey's "United"or Coltrane's "Mr. Day," which recently gotthe Eastman treatment with words aboutunplugging from our electronic devices andbeing more present and available to our fel-low human beings. "It's not preachy; it'sfunny," she says. She should know funny:Eastman's early career included Nevadashowroom gigs opening for legendary come-dians. "I had the honor of being put downby Don Rickles," she says with a laugh."That was so much fun; he was the nicestguy in the world." Expect to hear a mix ofmaterial including "standards people willrecognize," when Eastman hits Jazz atKitano on Nov. 16.

Expansive visionFlutist/composer Jamie Baum put out

two septet recordings over the years, but as

she worked on tunes for her new CD, InThis Life (SunnySide), she realized shewanted to incorporate more instruments, including guitar, congas and tabla—andthe Septet+ was born. "I wanted people tohear this as a continuation or evolution ofthe septet, connected to the other record-ings, but expanded." Though the materialis South Asian-inspired, "I wasn't lookingfor traditional players, since I was takingthe influences and using them in my ownway. I wanted people with knowledge andawareness of this kind of music." Baumsays that when she brings new composi-tions to great musicians, "If I don't say alot, they'll bring a lot to the music, take itto another level. They'll create somethingin the moment—the magic you're lookingfor." With originals, "It makes a huge dif-ference if they have time to feel the parts, where they can feel more free." This famil-iarity with the material makes an audibledifference in the recording: "You'll hear themusic more than the individual musician,"she says. "Everyone is working to create avibe, a feeling, a sound, an energy, versushearing particular musicians standingout." Baum credits the CD's co-producer,jazz stalwart Richie Beirach, with lendinga hand in the studio and post-production.Baum studied with Beirach in the 1990sand he has become a good friend and men-tor. "When you've been working on a proj-ect for a long time, it can be hard to haveperspective. It was great to have an outsideperson who is such a tremendous musician, with such a depth of knowledge aboutmusic and a good understanding of mixing, levels and balance. And it's helpful thathe's been on a million recordings." Baumand her Septet+ will celebrate the releaseof In This Life and likely introduce somenew compositions, at Jazz Standard Nov. 18.

Her father played one as a hobby for abouta decade and she and her brother bothpicked the sax for school band, "a naturalchoice," she recalls. Though Kreisbergstarted out studying classical music, shefell in love with jazz as a kid spending hersummers at music camp. "As soon as Iheard people improvise, I was bit by thejazz bug; I had to learn," she says. Fromthat moment, "Though I was required toplay classical, my heart was in jazz." Sincethen, Kreisberg has honed her chops inmany jazz, Latin and klezmer bands andrecently co-founded a jazz quintet, theHighliners, with singer Melissa Fogarty."We were both happy with our projects andcomfortable with sideperson gigs, but weboth wanted a new shot in the arm cre-atively; we wanted to lead our own project,"the saxophonist says. The Highliners havea jazz foundation, steeped in blues, swing, bop and Latin. "There's an alchemy ofdiversity in our musical backgrounds. Wewant to honor the standards, plus bring insomething you wouldn't expect." Besidesbeing on a Johnny Mandel kick, theHighliners repertoire includes a bluesy"House of the Rising Sun" and the Beatles'"Eight Days a Week." HOT FLASHESBy Seton Hawkins

Musician-Booker's CornerFounded in 1938, Minton's Playhouse

became a training ground for some of jazz'sgreatest talents in the 1940s and its nightlyline-ups make a convincing case for the club'smoniker as the birthplace of bebop. Shutteredin 1974, Minton's remained dormant fordecades as a variety of initiatives andinvestors' attempts to reopen it sputtered, though a brief reopening took place from 2006to 2010 under the ownership of Earl Spain.

Now, businessman Richard D. Parsons, former chairman of Citigroup and formerchairman and CEO of Time Warner, hastaken the reins in an effort to reopen, revamp and revitalize Minton's and hasbrought on pianist Danny Mixon to curatethe music. "I was recommended to inter-view with Dick Parsons," Mixon explains. "Iwas honored to be chosen to look into thejob and so I put my proposal on the tablewith what I thought I could do. He looked itover and, after the second meeting, broughtme on board."

Mixon—himself a respected Jazz pianistwho has established deep and lasting tiesinto the Harlem Jazz scene and its elders—certainly seems to be the man to tackle themusical job at Minton's. During his 12 yearsbooking music at the Lenox Lounge, Mixonoffered the stage to a rich mix of young tal-ents but, in particular, gave much-neededwork to some of jazz's legendary elders likeBenny Powell, a focus that will continue atMinton's. "What Mr. Parsons wanted to dowith Minton's really struck my heart,"Mixon notes. "He wanted a certain sound inthe club that related to what I did at LenoxLounge, which was to ensure that some ofthe older jazz musicians could keep working. That was a primary goal for me and whenMr. Parsons said he wanted to do the samething, I was over the moon about it!"

As Parsons installs a full kitchen in theclub and re-imagines the space in line witha supper club, Mixon has developed a sta-ble, consistent line-up featuring two housebands at the club which opened on Oct. 21.Monday through Wednesday nights show-case pianist Ed Stoute's quartet, featuringbassist Alex Layne, drummer LeroyWilliams and saxophonist Charles Davis.Rudy Lawless leads the band Thursdaythrough Saturday, joined by pianist BerthaHope, saxophonist Mike Camoia, guitaristMichael Howell and bassist Michael MaxFleming. While plans are in the works forlate-night events, as well as a Sundaybrunch, they have yet to be finalized.

As much of Harlem continues to gentri- continued on next page

fy and change rapidly, Mixon’s strategy tohonor the area’s jazz history and legacy bypromoting and actively supporting its eld-ers and masters is quite appropriate. Asthe club opens its doors again, Mixon’smusical integrity, paired with a full menuand investment capital, may help put theclub back on the map.

As for Danny Mixon, he brings his enor-mous talent, paying homage to true jazzform and history when performing atDizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on Nov. 12, joinedby bassist Lisle Atkinson, saxophonistJames Stewart, and drummer George Gray.

FRESH TAKESBy Angelo Di Loreto, student at the Manhattan School of Music

Musical chemistry can be a cumbersome"science," but once a musician finds thepersonnel combination he/she feels suitsthe music best, the sky can be the limit forthat group's potential. NYC-based trum-peter/composer John Raymond hasworked out such a formula in a band he willbe taking to Jazz at Kitano: guitarist GiladHekselman, bassist Aidan Carroll anddrummer Austin Walker. Raymond citesthe timeless dynamic of Art Farmer andJim Hall's quartet as an influence on hisband, particularly the album Interaction."I've chosen to play regularly with this par-ticular group of musicians because each ofthem possesses a sincerity and sensitivityin their playing that feels very similar forme to what Art Farmer and Jim Hall hadtogether," he says. Raymond is looking tobring the band into the studio in theupcoming months, which will eventuallyyield his second album as a leader.

At the Kitano, Raymond's band will per-form classic tunes, arrangements of stan-dards and some of his originals. In keepingwith the strong influence of Farmer on thisband, Raymond says he will only performon flugelhorn, just as Farmer did on

Interaction. "I've fallen in love with doingso," he says.

Hailed as a "prepossessing young trum-pet player" by the New York Times,Raymond is a Minneapolis native whomoved to New York in 2009 to attendSUNY Purchase for his master's degree.Recently, Raymond was a headliner in the2012 Festival of New Trumpet Music(FONT), as well as at the 2013 Winter JazzFestival. In the past, he has performedwith the likes ofJohn Abercrombieand Maria Schneider.

While Si Zentner's band was doing one-nighters in the 1960s, they played a rural bar insouthern Virginia made from an old quonset hut. It was a rathole, but traveling bands occa-sionally filled in a midweek night there. The pianist sat down and ran a few arpeggios on theupright that stood on the bandstand. The lower and upper registers were badly out of tune, andthe middle two octaves made no sound at all. He opened the front of the instrument and foundthat all the strings and hammers in the center of the piano had been chopped out. An axe wasburied right over middle C with a note attached: "As a service to all the unfortunate guys thatwill occupy this bench on future gigs, I have performed the following service to the touringmusical brotherhood. Nobody will EVER have to deal with this x%!&^%$ing piece of %$#&ever again." It was dated a week earlier, and signed: "Nat Pierce, Woody Herman Orchestra."
