NAND based Solid State StorageContrary to popular belief…•Technology and standards are still maturing/evolving•Many suppliers entering market with claims of solid state

products•Supplier expertise and capabilities varies greatly•Wide range of performance, reliability and endurance•Predominantly consumer class products, enterprise class is

evolving•Understanding supplier’s architecture and NAND

management techniques is key to best supplier/product strategy

•Fault tolerance protection still recommended if application cannot withstand a failure

•Cost comparisons of $/GB need to shift to $/IOPs HP Confidential - NDA Required

Drive Segment

• Solid State Storage with a disk interface (SATA, SAS, FC) in a disk form factor (2.5” SFF, 3.5” LFF)

• SSDs emulate traditional disk drives and are built using NAND flash memory with integrated controllers for managing the NAND flash, error correction, enhancing performance, endurance, and availability

• SSD looks like a disk drive to existing OS / storage stack• Can utilize the same infrastructures and scale out like

disk drives• Multiple classes of drives evolving (consumer, midline,

enterprise)• Very strong customer interest in SSD product• HP investing in market and developing suppliers• Customer benefits will improve with the

evolution/optimization of controllers and storage stack5

Ideal Environment• Markets & Applications requiring high IOPs and low latency data access − High Performance NAND storage has different availability characteristics than

HDD based solutions, but superior IOPS performance, lower power consumption and space requirements

• High Performance NAND storage for customers needing high IOPS performance and not raw capacity− For customers with high IO requirements (OLTP, FileServers, WebServers) ,

that buy large amounts of traditional hard drives to get the performance required.

− For customers where majority of IO is random. Highly sequential IO data will see little benefit over traditional hard drives

− For customers with high throughput, low latency requirements − For customers that want local storage, this will provide a high speed access

to enhance productivity− For customers looking at TCO using low power solutions in a smaller overall

footprint− Small block writes will extend the life of the device when compared with large

block writes

HP Overall SSD Product Strategy

• Deliver equal to or better customer experience compared to a traditional server midline hard drive

• Evolve suppliers to support HP requirements and qualification model

• Provide a viable volume SSD solution across ProLiant Server and external attach storage portfolio

− Hot plug

− LFF and SFF

− Qualified with HP Smart Arrays

− Initial product supports internal attach solutions only• Provide SATA mid-line drive level solutions while industry matures to

full enterprise class product (SAS), then offer 2 classes like HDD

• Evolve ecosystem to provide total solution

Overview

• 60GB and 120GB 3.0Gbs SATA hot plug SSD’s

− SLC NAND Flash

− Midline class drive with enterprise performance attributes

− Random reads > 60X those of a 15K SAS drive

− Random writes > 15X those of a 15K SAS drive

− Low power (2W)

• Supporting G6 internal attach Smart Arrays controllers

• Supports G5 DL160/180, DL360/380 and DL580 with P400 or P800. 6 Highly recommend cus tomer upgrades to new G contro llers to

get the mos t performance from the SSD

• Linear scaling up to 3-4 drives, performance increases up to 8 SSD’s.

• Can not mix SSD’s with SAS or SATA hard drives in same logical array

HP Solid State Drives (SSD)Solid state drives remove latency found in traditional hard drives by eliminating seek times

What’s New?• Hot plug SFF and LFF Solid State drives available in lager

capacities for ProLiant ML/DL and BL servers

•  More than just a boot device, these drives provide higher performance random reads and random writes than traditional rotating media drives

• Same low power solutions as previous generation SSD's but with higher performance , lower latency
