Draw up a monthly budget, or revise your budget, to factor in the impact of the interest rate hike.

These hopes, resolutions and plans inevitably include financial goals, such as paying off debt, saving more or saving up for a dream.

Here are some tips for revising your financial resolutions for 2014:

1. Draw up a budgetDraw up a monthly budget, or revise your budget, to factor in the impact of the interest rate hike.Ruthlessly cull unnecessary expenses to ensure that you can afford the necessities, such as bond repayments, vehicle finance instalments and debt repayments. If you cannot afford all your repayments, take immediate action. Speak to your credit providers to make a repayment plan or contact a debt counsellor to assist you.

2. Save If you have culled your expenses to the minimum, save up any money you have left after covering the essential expenses, even if it is only N$200 a month, to build up a reserve fund for unexpected emergencies, whether a medical emergency, or a vehicle or major appliance breakdown.

3. Annihilate debt Avoid making new debt at all costs. Do not open new credit facilities and do not buy anything on your existing

credit facilities. The higher the interest rate, the more it costs you to borrow money and the higher the monthly repayments.Make it an absolute priority to pay off your existing debt as fast as possible, starting with the highest interest rate debt first.Even a payment of just N$100 a month extra on an account will help you pay it off much faster.Once one debt has been settled, use the monthly repayment you were paying on it to pay into the next debt as an extra payment each month. In this way, you can eradicate debt from your life, much quicker than you imagine.

4. Pay any extra money into your home loanOnce you have paid off your short-term,

high interest rate debts, pay extra money into your FlexiBond with FNB Home Loan each month, not only to build up a buffer against future interest rate increases but also to ensure you save thousands of Namibian Dollars on interest and reduce the number years it will take to repay the loan.

5. Plan your financial futureOnce you have your current financial situation under firm and tight control, take the time and make the effort to plan your financial future.Decide what you want to achieve financially and set goals with timelines, for example, saving up for the kids' education within 10 years or retiring at age 65 with a defined monthly income. Then start looking for smart ways to reach your financial goals.

Balance water in summertime

Many people think that if the water looks blue it is protected from bacteria, swimmer residue and algae, but to fully ensure that the pool water is protected from bacteria and other contaminants, it needs to be tested at least once a week during the peak swimming season.

Proper water testing will help detect any problems that might be developing, which – when detected early- can be resolved easily so you can avoid headaches down the road. A computerised test not only determines the pools pH balance and TA, but it also detects levels of sanitizer, the presence of swimmer residue (skin and suntan oils, hair spray, etc.) and the p o s s i b i l i t y o f a l g a e a n d o t h e r contaminants.

Either way, be sure to stay ahead of problems with frequent water testing and both you and your pool will be all the happier for it.

I used this recipe recently on a North African function that I did.It is really delicious and was easy to make.

Serves 4

2 aubergines, diced into 2cm chunks2 tbsp vegetable oil2 tsp cumin seeds½ tsp black pepper½ tsp cinnamon½ tsp cayenne pepper2 tsp tomato puree2 tsp white vinegar300g Greek yoghurt½ bunch coriander, chopped

1. Put the spices in a dry frying pan and heat at a moderate temperature until fragrant

2. Add a dash of vegetable oil and fry the aubergine until golden.

3. Add the tomato puree then deglaze with the vinegar.

4. Whisk the yoghurt, then dollop over the aubergine and sprinkle generously with coriander.

The versatility of herbs – culinary, medicinal, cosmetic, insect repellent, great companion plants. Yes, I'm interested in herbs, but how do I go about starting my own herb garden, which plants should I plant where? These, and numerous other questions frequently pop up.

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTSYour personality and requirements will largely determine your choice of plants. Should your interest be culinary, then obviously you will mainly concentrate on kitchen herbs. Even then, it would be a waste of space, time and energy to plant something that you will hardly, if ever, use. A person interested in the soothing, healing or cosmetic aspects of herbs will opt for the more aromatic varieties. However, don't lose sight of the fact that many herbs have all these qualities – thyme, rosemary, sage, fennel, to mention but a few.

CONCERNING TYPES, DESIGNS ...TRADITIONAL herb gardens date back to monasteries of old and were planned as formal gardens for practical reasons. Symmetry and neat detail with focal points such as a sundial, garden benches and paved pathways were at

the order of the day. This also allowed for easier access to and maintenance of plants. Remember, these were not only places of meditation, but a source of income generated from the sale of fresh herbs, medicinal and cosmetic products manufactured from the same.

INFORMAL – also very romantic, but could be a bit unpractical and labour intensive. If you have the space and can afford such luxury, you will enjoy endless satisfaction.

Alas, gardens are getting smaller and we have to make do with the space available. Most herbs have shallow root systems and are ideally suited for pots, even flat dwellers can have a pot herb garden on balconies or in window boxes. Like people, plants do not want to be crowded, so do not over plant your pots. A large variety of herbs like parsley, dill, fennel, lovage and celery are happy with dappled sun or a semi-shade position. Give them each their own space by planting in terra force bricks around trees, much better looking than a tree ring and what a way to use space!

SUN LOVERS – Rosemary, thyme, lavender, bay leaf and lemon verbena.

SOIL PREPARATION – one part garden soil, two parts good compost, mix in some of Efekto's bonemeal and Vitaboost Organic pellets as well as some vermiculite or perlite. This mixture will have a good balance between water retention and drainage. Apply a liquid fertilizer like Efekto's Seagro of Multifeed Classic once a month.

CAREInspect plants regularly to clean up where necessary. Herbs like lavender and rosemary are inclined to get woody and should be topped once a year by at least a third.Although herbs are insect repellent some could be bothered by aphids. Oil in herbs will retain pesticides, therefore chemical control is not advisable.

GO GREEN with natural sprays. Comfrey is a gem in any garden, also as a focal plant. Excellent for breaking down compost. Fermented leaves make a wonderful spray to keep your herbs and other plants pest free. Use Artemesia and Marigold leaves the same way. Getting annoyed with Khakibos in your garden? Please don't! Family of the Marigold, you make a fermented spray as follows:

1Kg of Khakibos in 10 litres of water. Allow to ferment for 2 weeks before using (on your plants, has no alcohol content!)

P.S.: Mice don't like mint – no need for a cat!
