IBROWSE

Chocolate cake at an iBrowse session? Sure! Our authors are generous and besides the big 20% discount on the list price of the book, we sometimes get authors like Sheila Kumar who treat us to a slice of chocolate cake. Sometimes we even get canapes and wine if sponsored by the KGA. There are plenty of great reasons to come to iBrowse, besides meeting real live authors.

Two sessions of iBrowse through the month of August had iBrowsers busy and excited through the month. The first was Sheila Kumar on the 11th with her hardcore romance ‘No Strings Attached’ which took off on an exciting platform of the tussle for space that is ongoing in a newspaper office between the editorial and the sales staff. ‘People buy the paper for the content,’ say the editorial, while the sales can be blunt - “Your salaries come from the ad space we sell’. And in between this excitement bloomed romance which will keep you reading non-stop till the last page. Gregory de Nazareth effortlessly took over the moderation of iBrowse on the 11th as laryngitis escaped with my voice on the day.

Sheila the author, organised delicious chocolate cake made by her caterer friend and Catholic Club member Geeta D’Souza. The crowd could not get enough of it and Harper Collins gave us the book for as little as Rs 160/ As always, the authors are pleased to get a beautiful plant as a thank you, rather than a bouquet of flowers.

For a change, we decided to sit together and discuss the book read for the month, before the book club event. The book for discussion was Paula Hawkins mystery thriller, ‘Dead in the Water.’ A few months ago, we had read her first best-seller novel” The Girl on the Train’ which has been made into a Hollywood movie. The book did not disappoint and inspite of the ongoing noise of renovation and people chatting as they filed in for iBrowse, our iBrowsers were able to enjoy an interesting discussion for half an hour.

IBROWSE 2

The book for discussion in September is “Victoria & Abdul” by Shrabani Basu. Library members can get the book after our iBrowse event on the 8th September.

Pankaj Sekhsaria and his book ‘Islands in Flux’ will be our next guest author on the 8th of September. A Harper Collins release, do come and enjoy his wonderful insights into the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

From Goa to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands

The hall was packed with over 100 guests on the 25th August. Whoever says celebrities don’t bring in the crowd should have been present, the hall was filled to over flowing. Wendell Rodricks author of ‘Poskem – Goans in the shadows’, did not fail to please, arriving most fashionably in an understated cream, heavily embroidered long kurta.

Most of us know Wendell from his fame of being one of India’s foremost designers. Infact in 2014, the Government of India conferred upon him its fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri for Art and Fashion design.

Stanley Pinto who once worked with the Times of India did the honours of introducing Wendell, being an old friend and read an except from his earlier non-fiction book ‘The Green Room.’

The book launch, evoked a lively and interactive session about the practice of keeping poskems in the past in Goan homes, once Wendell read us a few excerpts. Today as Wendell explained, it goes against human rights laws, but in the past these abandoned babies were given safe and secure homes in many Goan homes and in return they did the housework and sometimes worked in the fields as well. Sadly the negative connotation was the child was raised with the family name but with no legal rights towards inheritance like a regular child of the home. And sometimes were exploited by the male members of the family.

Interestingly many present explained that it was and still is a practice in other states of the country, but minus the derogatory term. They are just used as servants.

The book sold well @ a 20% discount by the publishers Om Books International and An unflustered & equable Wendell, spent over 1/2 an hour autographing a huge line of book lovers copies.

The KGA sponsored a plate of delicious snacks for all present, conjured up from the Club kitchens.

Our next author is Pankaj Sekhsaria with his book on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands called - “ Islands in Flux the Andaman and Nicobar story.” Don’t miss it on the 8th September @ 6pm in the Ball-room.

ELDERS AND CHILDREN Children

On Family Day, the children had fun painting their own Nehru caps in their special zone.

Children’s Corner

The Children’s Karaoke Party was indeed a delightful event. It was awesome to witness such great talent of our young ones, the future of our club. All the children who came and participated were so enthusiastic and are such good singers.

We had singers from toddlers - a two-year-old sang Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The slightly older ones 4-5 (who couldn’t read the lyrics) sang beautifully to songs from ‘Frozen’ - Let it go, etc. One five-year-old boy sang ‘Shape of you’ and he was backed by two older children. Then came the older ones 10-12, who were truly amazing.

A special thank you goes out to our dear KJ Lloyd who so graciously agreed to come and host our show. Thank you, Lloyd,!

The next children’s event will be held in October.

FAITH

Faith Department activities: On 18th August, Rev. Fr. Arul Raj, CSC (National Director of Holy Cross Family Ministries) gave us a talk on ‘Amoris Laetitia’ (The Joy of Love), which is an apostolic exhortation by Pope Francis, released in 2016. Pope Francis says that the Joy of Love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church, as the Church is a family of families. The future of humanity passes through the family. Our families are nourished by Prayer and the Grace of Sacraments.

Fr. Arul Raj went on to summarize each chapter and said that Chapter 4, based on the concept of Love as explained in 1 Corinthians 13 and Chapter 5, based on Catholic parenting and children are important.

Pope Francis asks us to be joyful, by extending our
