Future Prospects 27th March 2013, 12:45 A large crowd can be expected at the big Cumbrian derby as EGREMONT RANGERS take on WATH BROW HORNETS. The game will pit the current league leaders against the champions and a close game would surprise no one. The derby is just Wath Brow’s second league game of 2013 and head Coach Ian Rooney will be under no illusions about what a tough contest Egremont will present, especially at home where they have two wins to their name already. YORK ACORN continue their search for their first points with a home contest against SIDDAL. The visitors produced a clinical display in their recent victory over Skirlaugh and a similar kind of display would surely prove to be too much for the North Yorkshire hosts. WIGAN ST PATRICKS search for an opening home win in 2013 sees them take on LEIGH MINERS RANGERS on Easter Thursday. The Miners suffered a heavy defeat in Cumbria just a couple of weeks ago and they will know a major improvement will be required if they are to come away with the spoils in this Clarington Park clash. There’s another “St Helens v Wigan” encounter when THATTO HEATH CRUSADERS entertain INCE ROSE BRIDGE. Thatto – with wins from their opening two games – lead the pack chasing leaders Egremont Rangers and a win here would certainly keep the pressure up on the Cambrians’. Ince recovered from a big opening round loss with a win at East Hull so should not be written off by the 2011 champions. MYTON WARRIORS face LOCK LANE in just their second game of the season. The Hull outfit will be looking to get their campaign underway with two points this weekend and should have too much fire-power, despite Lock Lane showing some encouraging signs on their return to the top-flight. The first of two derbies sees HULL DOCKERS welcome EAST HULL to The Willows. The hosts look in great shape after picking up wins against Myton Warriors and Lock Lane, although they will need to watch the visitors attacking threats as they’ve had no problem scoring points in the opening weeks. WEST HULL and SKIRLAUGH will both be looking to start climbing the table with a win this weekend. The sides currently occupy the bottom two places in the Premier Division table and it could be a tense encounter as both try and get their seasons up and running.

Premier Division Preview

Welcome

Enjoy the game Enjoy the season

Mick Lumby Chairman

Good afternoon and welcome to Thanet Road for our second home game of the season. We welcome all from todays opponents Siddal, who have made a steady start to their campaign with a home victory in their first game which was followed up with a narrow point defeat away at Leigh Miners. With the cancellation of last weekends fixtures it has given our coaching staff some extra time to work on the areas of our game where we need to improve on following our last home defeat to St Pats. Although we know for much of the game we were a bit below par and did not play as well as we can we still created chances that maybe on another day we would have taken. One of the plus points from the game was the character shown by every one to drag ourselves back into the contest when it looked dead and buried. The loss of experienced player and BARLA tourist Tommy Hill is a massive blow to the

club as his experience at this level is vital especially to the young members of the squad and we all wish him well and a speedy recovery. Our A team who have made an encouraging start to their season suffered their first defeat of the season when the lost by four points to a strong Oulton Raiders outfit in a terrific end to end contest. Today they travel the short distance to take on our neighbours The Locos in a derby encounter and will be trying to get back to winning ways. Finally this Sunday afternoon with the help of steward Billy we are holding a Sporting Afternoon with Ex Leeds and GB player Roy Dickinson as guest speaker plus comedian Chris Glade which is all in aid of the two young lads Lewis Lord and Harry Bromwich who have been selected for the GB U18`s tourist side. Without doubt it will be an entertaining afternoon and one which we all hope is well attended.

Club News

York Acorn duo join Emerging Lions tour YORK Acorn duo Harry Bromwich and Lewis Lord are preparing for a BARLA Emerging Lions tour to Germany in June. The pair, who have developed through Acorn’s junior ranks, were named in the under-17s national representative squad after starring for Yorkshire U17s last autumn. Lord, who has also previously had a spell with Leeds Rhinos’ scholarship, is a member of the York City Knights under-20s squad. Bromwich has been in Featherstone Rovers’ scholarship. They are finding their feet in open age rugby, both set to play for Acorn ‘A’ in the York & District Cup semi-final at York Lokomotive’s New Lane base this afternoon.

Future Prospects Tickets still Available, but numbers are limited.

Coaches Comments Welcome to this afternoon's match against Siddal, they are a team that is always there or thereabouts come the end of the season and today will provide us with another stern test. Last time out we only started playing after 70 minutes giving ourselves far to much to do in the closing stages as we went in search of that unlikely victory, We need to learn to start playing with the same intensity from the start of matches right through to the end you cannot afford

to give teams start in this division and expect to make it up that's not going to happen. Hopefully today we will have a few players back who have been carrying injuries and I am expecting an open and exciting game, I'd just like to finish by wishing our second team good luck this afternoon in the semi final of the York and District cup against York Lokos over at New Lane hopefully it's the start of retaining the trophy we won last year

York Acorn 18-26 Wigan St Pats By Andy Grant | Monday 18th March 2013 Acorn go down despite comeback Acorn went down in their first home game of the season despite fighting a sustained come-back that essentially came a little too late to take the points. St Pats dominated the early proceedings as Acorn struggled to get into the match the opening score came on 3 minutes when stand-off Ryan Smith rounded off a good move stand-off Brad Smith goaled then on 14 minutes loose forward Simon Atherton went over again Smith goaled to stretch the lead. Acorn were really struggling to get into form but as the half developed chances began to appear a couple of clean breaks came to nothing and a storming Michael Embleton break saw the final pass go to ground. In the second period Brad Smith kicked a penalty on 43 then on 51minutes centre Steve Simm crashed over to continue the St Pats dominance. Ryan Smith increased the lead on 57 minutes when he ghosted through a gap for his second smith goaled and at 24-0 the game was over. Cue the blue and gold come back Danny Caldwell barged over from close range on 63. Adam Sellers got over in the corner after some smart work from Tim Elliott 4 minutes later and then a 70 yard effort rounded off by Joe Porter after Adam Sellers had made a superb break got Acorn in the match after makeshift kicker Andy Gargan added some superb conversions to all 3 tries. Brad Smith converted a penalty on 75 minutes to ease the pressure on the visitors and as Acorn pressed in the final minutes they could not break the resolute St Pats defence. Outstanding in another tough match were Arran Thompson Jordan Hyde and Joel Johnson sadly Acorn captain Tom Hill left the pitch with a confirmed broken jaw injury. Photographs by Marc Bailey

Patient boss Scott Rhodes confi-

dent York Acorn can get off mark 10:24am Thursday 28th March 2013.

SCOTT RHODES says his York Acorn ARLC side are in good spirits ahead of their National Conference League premier division home clash against Siddal, writes James Jeavons. Acorn opened the season with narrow losses to East Hull (32-24) and Wigan St Patrick’s (18-26), before last week-end’s enforced lay-off due to the recent bad weather. Rhodes admits the call-off hasn’t helped his side as they seek their first win since promotion but says training has been good. “It doesn’t help having last week’s game called off. We would prefer to play continuous weeks but we’ll be ready for this weekend,” he said. “We’ve got quite a young team at the moment but they’re training very well and confidence remains good.” Rhodes has declared he has had to be a little more patient with his team because of its inexperience. “We haven’t got mass experience within the squad so we’ve got to be patient,” he said. “Andy Gargan is probably our only experienced player and maybe if we had one or two more like him we might have done that little bit better.” Despite the winless start, Rhodes believes his side have been unfortunate not to get off the mark.

“We’re not getting beaten easily, which is the main thing. We’ve competed in both matches and that’s pleasing,” he said. Siddal have gained one win out of their opening two games and the Acorn boss expects a tough test. “Siddal are always up there and they’ve got a big strong team and we’ll have to be ready for that.” Rhodes has a fully fit squad to choose from and states no one is guaranteed to start. “Joe Budd should recover from a dead leg along with Mick Embleton who should feature,” he said. “Ash Robson should also return and has been great in the first two games, but no one is guaranteed to start and I’ll be picking a team on merit and how hard they’re working in training.”

The Blue and Gold’s in Action 2nd Team York Acorn 38-40 Oulton By Darren Wint | Monday 18th March 2013

Acorn A lose their first match of the new campaign Acorn ‘A’ suffered an agonising last-gasp defeat at home to Oulton ‘A’ in the Yorkshire Men’s League Forty-20 Cup. The Blue and Gold's’ second-string went down 40-38 at Thanet Road after the visitors scored a winning converted try in the 78th minute of a see-saw contest. There was never more than a converted score between the sides in a terrific clash, Tom Lunn opening the scoring for Oulton, Luke Richardson goaling. Kevin Brayshaw and Thomas Mackley crossed for Acorn and Antony Chilton added the extras to the first try for a 10-6 lead. Ryan Laycock’s 13th-minute touchdown lev-elled for Oulton before Acorn’s Lewis Lord and Raiders winger Jamie Bell swapped con-verted scores. The sides could not be separated at half-time, going in at 22-22 after Acorn’s Johnny Waldron and Oulton’s Bell again went in for tries, both goaled. Steven Waldron put the home side ahead in the 50th minute, but prop Jamie Chappell replied and Richardson goaled to edge the visitors back in front. Johnny Waldron’s second, plus Chilton’s goal, gave the Blue and Golds the advantage again just after the hour, but Aiden Bowden responded immediately and Richardson’s goal made it 34-32. The hosts appeared to have snatched it ten minutes from time when Callum Hannigan went over, with Chilton landing his fifth goal. However, Bell had the final say after chasing a kick to the posts and Richardson’s decisive sixth conversion proved the difference. Man of the Match - Lewis Lord on his first open age appearance
