Creating a culture of collaboration & co-operation

CREATING THRIVING in the age of disruption

About me, and why CREATING THRIVING

Richard Parton, Change & Resilience Consultant & Coach

The pace of change is changing: in the ‘age of disruption’ we need organisations that are more change-agile than ever before

Organisational & psychological science is showing the way

Now all we need to do is get the message out there.

First, a moment of mindfulness

Modern workplaces can be inhospitable environments to work in• Incivility is rife•  From 2011 to 2013, the proportion of

Americans reporting they quit a job because it was an uncivil workplace increased from 20% to 26%1

• Bullying is a ‘norm’ • in a Victorian survey 1 in 5 people

reported experiencing bullying, 1 in 3 had witnessed it2

• The pace of change is increasing, competition is becoming ever more global

So what is an ‘abundance’ mindset

Supporting evidence: Strengths Theory

Studies have shown that people who focus on their strengths:• Are happier • Are more confident • Have higher levels of self-esteem • Have higher levels of energy and vitality • Experience less stress • Are more resilient • Are more likely to achieve their goals • Perform better at work • Are more engaged at work • Are more effective at developing themselves and growing

as individuals.

Other areas of evidence• Mindfulness /

Psychological flexibility• Savoring• Kindness• High Quality Connections• Link between workplace

relationships and wellbeing, engagement, performance etc

Discussion In groups of 2-3 consider a time in the last week where you experienced something you were grateful for, you appreciated, or you noticed a strength in a person a team or something else in your environment.i) Describe to your partner

what happened.ii) What was the effect on

you?iii) How might an abundance

mindset help you or your team?

Let’s put our brains together

SOAR

Personal SOAR• Consider an important goal you are working towards• Complete your SOAR:

• Strengths: what personal strengths do you have that might be useful

• Opportunities: what opportunities exist to make an improvement? Who else might help you? How might you use your strengths?

• Aspirations: what does your ideal vision look like? What makes you really care about this vision? What personal values show up in your vision?

• Results: how would you know that you have made a difference?

• In groups of 2-3: • Share you goal, why is it important to you? • Share your SOAR• Discuss, was there any difference in the way you felt about

your goal before and after? If so, how might that help you?

Positive Deviance• Think of a goal you are working towards (it can be the

same one from the previous exercise)• Think of a recent time that you did unusually well at

moving towards this goal, some time that you make exceptional progress, or perhaps a time that you were proud of an achievement• What were the factors that helped create that

exceptional performance? What can you learn from your experience?
