How to practice scales (L#15, 16)

Your Action Plan

Understanding what scales are is super important. We need to know how to use them, not just how to play them.

Many of the students I have worked with in the past have been able to play the scales up and down the neck at incredible speed, but when asked to be musical with them and use them within a certain context they have no idea where to start.

Hopefully this lesson might shed a little light onto the scales for you.

1. You should see arpeggios as chords, but played onenote at a time. For instance if you play the notes C, E,G, B all at the same time you will have a C Major 7thchord. If you now play the notes C, E, G and B onenote at a time you're now playing the C major 7tharpeggio.

That is why knowing your arpeggios (aka chord tones) is so important. Just as a guitar player needs to know their chords. Bass players need to know their arpeggios as they're one and the same thing.

It's also important to understand that every chord has a corresponding scale. In the C major 7th chord's

Page 6: How to practice Scales - Amazon S3-+L15,16+How+to... · How to practice Scales ... Just as a guitar player needs to know their chords. Bass players need to know their arpeggios as

case the corresponding scale would be a C major scale.

Lets look at the arpeggio and scale next to each other

C major 7th chord tones; C, E, G, B C major scale; C, D, E, F, G, A, B

Make sure to see that I've only added 3 more notes to the original C Major 7th arpeggio to get the entire C major scale.

Once you understand how the arpeggios and scales are related you'll see that the arpeggio is the foundation of the harmony, and the scale simply fills in the gaps in-between the chord tones.

Now when you create a bass line using chord tones from the arpeggio, make sure you can assign a corresponding scale and then try using it to enhance the bass line in some way.

2. Learn the major scale from 3 different positions asdiscussed within the video tutorials. Starting on the first, middle and little fingers. Become familiar with each position so you can transition between them freely.

3. Begin to use my 'continuous scale exercises'(discussed within the video tutorial) one scale at atime. Start with C major making sure that you canplay all the notes from the scale (lowest to thehighest and back again) within one position. Thenmove up through the different positions making sure

Page 7: How to practice Scales - Amazon S3-+L15,16+How+to... · How to practice Scales ... Just as a guitar player needs to know their chords. Bass players need to know their arpeggios as

you can play and visualize the C major scale clearly in every position of the fingerboard.

Repeat these exercises in at least 6 different keys. For this exercise I recommend all 12 keys but sometimes keeping focus can be tough.
