Chapter 1

Defining AndUnderstanding Your

Fears

Though we often think about fearin a negative context, the truth ofthe matter is that fear can be avery positive thing. It tells uswhen we are in physical danger,it helps us figure out what thingsmake us uncomfortable and itreminds us of hurts we haveexperienced in the past.

Page 25: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

However, in many cases, fearcan also be a cage that preventsus from doing what we want andreleasing the Superhero inside. When you look around andrealize that your life is hemmed inby fear, you need to overcome it.

One of the first steps that youcan take in overcoming yourfears is to define them. Clearlydefining your fears can help youget a grasp on what fears are onautomatic pilot in your head.

Page 26: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Identify Your Fears

In some cases, identifying yourfears is easy. You may be afraidof heights or of flying orsomething else that is easy toperceive. This is especially trickyfor budding Superheroes wantingto get off the ground. However, when fear sneaks up on you andleaves you with a panic reactionthat you don’t understand, it canbe confusing.

Start really investigating thetimes that you are afraid. Whatdo they have in common? Is

Page 27: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

there a situation, an emotion oreven a person that triggers it? Isit fear of failing, fear of loss orfear of confrontation?

Before you can start definingyour fear for yourself, you needto identify it. For some people, this is very difficult, especially ifthe fear is rooted very deeply. There can be many layers to afear and union reflection you cansee that several different fearfulreactions actually steam fromone main fear.

Page 28: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Write It Down

If you are having trouble definingyour fears, start writing. Writingis a fantastic tool because itallows you to organize yourthoughts and to learn more aboutwhat you need or what yourtriggers may be. Start writingabout your fearful thoughts andhow they affect you, bothmentally and physically. Writeabout the last experience you feltyou never want to face again.Chances are you will have fearsurface when the samecircumstances come up again.

Page 29: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Fear is something that is veryhard to sort out in your head. After all, fear can make youhyper alert, but then it can alsoconfuse you, especially if youdon’t know where it is comingfrom. Set a timer for five minutesand just free-write until you hearthe beep. This is something thatcan help you put the fears thatare holding you back on paperbefore you have time for yourdefense mechanisms to kick in.Fear does not like to beexposed, it likes to lurk in darkplaces like a true villain.

Page 30: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Talk With Someone Else

If you have other Superheroesaround you that you trust, you’llfind that there are a number ofreasons to get them involved inyour search for your fears. Inmany cases, the people closestto us know us better than weknow ourselves, and as a result, they can help pose ideasregarding what we are afraid of.

Ask them if they have everknown you to be affected byfear, and ask them what theythink you were afraid of. They

Page 31: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

might be able to offer insight thatsurprises you. Outside peoplecan offer a fresh perspective onwhat maybe the cause of ourfears.

Page 32: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Understand That FearsAffect People Differently

The interesting thing about fear isthat although it is a universalexperience, it is not caused bythe same thing from person toperson. For example, if twopeople are looking at a snake, one might get very nervous andupset, while the other person hasno fear at all! This goes furtherthan just simple phobias, however.

Two people have experiencedthe same thing, and though one

Page 33: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

person has a strong negativereaction, the other person moveson as they were before. Ourminds are complex machines thatprocess millions of bits ofinformation, including fears. Stopcomparing your fears to others, and learn what a particular fearmeans to you. A fear can be aspersonal as a fingerprint.

Page 34: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Find Out Why You AreAfraid

People can be afraid of the samething but in two very differentways. For example, consider twopeople who are afraid of gettingon an airplane. One person mightbe afraid that the plane willcrash, while another personmight be afraid of being hijackedor kidnapped. One person’s fear, therefore, is based on the anxietyof dying, and the other personfears a loss of control. A loss ofcontrol fear is a prominent onefor entrepreneurs on many levels,

Page 35: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

as well as one battled bySuperheroes.

As you can see from thisexample, it is not useful to saythat both people are afraid offlying, though this is how the fearmanifests. Take a moment tothink about why you have thefear that you do and what theimpulse behind it might be.

If you are invested in takingcontrol of your fears, andachieving Superhero Successthen take a moment to thinkabout how you can define them. You cannot conquer your fears if

Page 36: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

you don’t know what they are!

Page 37: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Chapter 2

Internal AndExternal Fears AndHow They Develop

Almost everyone in today’s worldunderstands the necessity ofbalancing their personal life withtheir business life. This balance ifoftentimes fearful and chaotic.Frequently, people think the onlyway a person can accomplish allof their goals is to stayconstantly busy. This is not

Page 38: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Superhero thinking or living.

When fears hold a person backfrom succeeding in all of theiraspirations they lack balance. This fear-based imbalancerestricts a person from achievingthe greatness that they arecapable of and most oftentimespeople don’t realize how thisoccurs.

Fears can come in many formsand at times can be detrimentalto a person’s wellbeing. The twotypes of fears that all other fearsfall under are internal andexternal. These fears present

Page 39: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

themselves in very different waysand can have very differenteffects on a person’s state ofmind. Understanding both ofthese fears and the reasonsbehind them is the only way toovercome them.

External fears are the mosteasily understandable andrecognizable. These fears arerelated to things that existoutside of a person and bringwith them a natural feeling ofdread and anxiety.

Just because it is natural to havethese feelings, however, doesn’t

Page 40: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

mean it is necessary or evencommon to experience them. Thefear of spiders and snakes aretwo of the most common externalfears a person could have.

External fears are very easy torecognize due to the fact thatthey are triggered by a clearlyidentifiable outside source. Thistrigger is always related to thefear itself.

Referring back to the fear ofspiders, the sighting of a spideror a soft creeping feeling goingacross a person’s arm can causethe feeling of anxiety and dread

Page 41: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

to appear. These fears usuallyonly occur when a personencounters or believes they areencountering the object of theirfear.

External fears can affect aperson in more than just theirpersonal life. A business ownermay refuse to expand theirbusiness if it requires that theywork on the seventieth floor of ahigh-rise building when they arefearful of heights. A person mayrefuse to attend an importantinternational business meeting ifit is occurring in a part of theworld that they fear is unsafe.

Page 42: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Regardless of what a person’sspecific external fears are, theywill always negatively affect thatperson in some area of their lifeholding them apart fromexperiencing their Superheroinside.

As stated earlier, it is often easyto identify the source of anexternal fear. These fears areoften caused by something that aperson has seen or experiencedat some point in their life. Fallingfrom a tree house as a childcould easily cause a fear ofheights, and even seeingexcessive crime in a certain area

Page 43: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

of town can cause a person toexperience fear when undersimilar circumstances.Regardless of the external fear,it usually exists solely as areminder of something bad thathas already happened.

Internal fears are much harder todefine and explain than externalfears. An internal fear is one thatexists solely within a person’sown mind. They too are oftentriggered by something in theexternal world, but the externalworld is not their basis forexistence. Since this type of feardoesn’t necessarily stem from a

Page 44: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

specific event in a person’s life, itcan be difficult to identify themain cause for the fear.

Internal fears can manifest as afear of rejection, failure, successand several other inner issues. Aperson could fear asking formoney to start a businessbecause they think that they maybe turned down, but anotherperson may fear the same thingbased solely on the fact that theyfear the responsibility and whatthey have to take on if theysucceed.

This same fear of asking for a

Page 45: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

business loan could stem fromthe fear that a person will failonce they are given theopportunity. Regardless of thereason a person is hesitant toask for the capital, it alwaysstems from an internal fear.

Internal fears can be caused bya number of factors that areusually related to emotion. Aperson may develop an irrationalfear of rejection after being leftby a partner. Another personmay develop a fear of failureafter spending a lifetime with anoverbearing father whodemanded perfection in every

Page 46: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

aspect of his life. These fearscan prevent a person from takingthe risks necessary to realizetheir dreams of success and letthe Superhero with them soar.

Often internal fears are verydifficult to overcome.Unfortunately for anyone who hasa fear, sometimes the only wayto overcome it is to face it head-on. This may sound very nearimpossible to many, but it onlytakes a moment of looking pastthis fear for a person toaccomplish what they want.Focusing on the end results andnot the fear can be the beginning

Page 47: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

of achieving a Superherolifestyle.

Chapter 3

The MostCommon FearsAnd Why They

Are Hard ToDeal With

In large part, fear of certainobjects or situations can belearned from others. Children canlearn to fear spiders and snakes

Page 49: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

because they witness theirparents’ fear of such creatures. On the other hand, children ofentrepreneurial parents are morelikely not to be afraid to starttheir own businesses.

Many people learn their fearsfrom those around them or theyallow themselves to becomefearful of something simplybecause they feel a certainsituation may be potentiallyharmful or dangerous. Across theboard people fear many of thesame things, and dealing withthose fears are a difficult dailychallenge in the pursuit of

Page 50: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

allowing their inner Superhero toemerge.

Page 51: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Fear of Creatures

Many people fear creatures suchas bugs, snakes, mice, andspiders. This fear is a good oneto have at times. It is adaptedfrom the need to survive. Peopleknow that some snakes arepoisonous and therefore theytend to fear all snakes becausethey want to survive.

The same goes for other creepycrawly critters such as spidersand mice. People tend to want tokeep as much distance betweenthemselves and these creatures

Page 52: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

as they possibly can becausethey don’t want to get up closeand personal with them to see ifthey are poisonous or not. It’sagain a survival method.

This fear is difficult to deal withbecause bugs and creatures arelocated everywhere. They canget into a person’s home andthey are always found outside.Bugs can easily invest anddestroy property and many carrydisease, which is why mostpeople fear them in the firstplace.

Dealing with a fear of creatures

Page 53: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

is difficult because it is hard toovercome a fear of things thatpeople perceive as dangerous orhurtful. As a result, most peoplewill continue to be afraid ofcreatures their entire lives andwill react and base decisions onwhether there is potential toencounter them.

Page 54: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Fear of Heights

Many people are afraid ofheights and they don’t likebalconies, can’t stand going intoan elevator and up to a highfloor, and cannot go to the edgeof the Empire State Building andlook down. This is a perfectlynormal fear that stems fromanother survival trait. The fearhigh places is based solely onthe potential to fall.

A fear of heights is difficult todeal with for two reasons. Thefirst is that heights are easy to

Page 55: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

avoid. Many people are happy totake a longer route to work toavoid driving over a high bridgeor to live in places where thereare no mountains for them tohave to travel.

The second reason is that a fearof heights has no substance. When a person is faced with theconcept of going outside on abalcony or ledge they often feel asense of panic and they freezemaking it impossible for them toput themselves in this situation.Unless a person is dedicated totaking steps to encounter higherand higher places, this fear will

Page 56: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

be impossible to overcome.

Page 57: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Fear of Storms

This is a common fear that manypeople have. This is possibly dueto the fact we are born with thefear of loud noises. Also stormsare unpredictable and there isnothing people can do to controlthem. Watching the news andseeing the damage fromhurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, and rain generates a lot ofdifferent fears in people.

The reason this fear is hard todeal with is that storms arebeyond a persons control and

Page 58: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

threatens survival on many levels.Additionally, the media is verydramatic warning people ofimpending storms and thedangers that go along with it.This perpetuates a fear of anevent that may not have evenoccurred to the person.

Page 59: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Small Spaces

Many people are terrified ofsmall, enclosed spaces becausethey feel claustrophobic andcannot escape. This can happenon airplanes and can severelyrestrict a persons business andpersonal life. For many people, the fear of being trapped orcaged in a small space feels likethe equivalent of death. Thephysical reaction to this situationcan actually induce a heart attackand cause a persons death.

Overcoming a fear of small

Page 60: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

spaces can be one of the mostdifficult to overcome because it ishard to get people to face thefear. People often experiencepanic attacks that make thephobia even more pronounced, which makes it even moredifficult to overcome.

Public Speaking

Many entrepreneurs face one ofthe top fears of all people, publicspeaking. This is due to the factthat the idea of being the centerof attention is terrifying to them. They are worried that they will bejudged, ridiculed, found

Page 61: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

unattractive, or not good enough. The root of this problem is thatpeople fear that they willembarrass themselves in front ofpeers or clients, which they seeas the death of their credibilityand business.

This is difficult to deal withbecause it requires people toactually start speaking in public. Many face panic attacks, feelsick, get nauseous, or freeze, which makes the moment evenmore difficult. As with otherfears, if the person is able toovercome their initial publicspeaking engagement, however,

Page 62: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

most find it easier and easier toengage in public speaking fromthat point on.

Whatever the fear, creatures orspeaking it is clear that fears arepowerful, effect life and businessdecisions and it can seem to bea daunting task to overcomethem on ones own. Avoidance isusually the route people takewhen faced with fear. However, you have to ask yourself whereyou would rather place youreffort, avoiding a fear orovercoming it. The Superheroresponse is always to overcome!

Page 63: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Chapter 4

Why Fears DevelopIn The First Place

And How To DefeatFear As An

Entrepreneur

Fear of failure, lack ofexperience, and timing candiscourage entrepreneurs fromembarking on a potentiallysuccessful business endeavor. While it is important to be smart

Page 64: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

about business goals andprofessional planning, organizations rarely grow toextensive lengths without a leapof Superhero faith and adequatepreparation for professionalopportunities.

Ironically enough, while somefear is a good thing for keepingbusinesses safe and setting fluidlimits, too much fear can bedebilitating and may createintense barriers that inhibitprofessional growth.

Page 65: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

How is Fear Generated inthe Body?

The area of the brain that isresponsible for the generation offear is the amygdala, whichresponds to neurotransmittersthat fire when fear is generated. In fact, the amygdala isresponsible for one’sperception/response tofrightening events.

Initially a distress reactionoccurs, which evolves fromunpatterned stimuli. Humans theninherit coping mechanisms based

Page 66: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

on the objects that deject thisfear, and a more mature way ofdealing with fear reactions.

Page 67: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Biochemical Reaction ofFear

Although fear is an emotionalstate, the human bodycompensates for this mentalityby inducing a variety of physicalresponses, which includesweating, adrenaline spikes, andincreases in heart rate. It is asthis point when the “fight or flight”response kicks in, and individualsmust choose how to respond totheir fear. This reaction isautomatic, evolutionary, andcrucial for survival.

Page 68: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Emotional Response

Emotional responses to fear arehighly personalized. Someindividuals (“adrenaline junkies”)have a positive response to fear, while others have a negativeresponse to fear and avoid fear-inducing events at all costs.Though the physical reaction isthe same for all humans, differentstimuli can initiate very personalfear responses for each human.

Page 69: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Societal Beliefs AboutFear

Recent studies have discernedthat it is no longer tenable tosubstantiate that fear erupts frompainful experiences. Though fearis often sought out in safeenvironments, individuals often goout of their way to avoid it inunhealthy settings. As a result, this feeling is necessary forproductivity and goal initiation.

Page 70: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Types of Reactions andSolutions

Researchers have distinguishedtwo inconsequential types offear: fluid and fixed. While fluidfear may initiate and ceasesingularly or on a recurring basis, fixed fear is constant. Fluid fearsare considered acceptable, because individuals canovercome them. Yet, fixed fearscan intensify and may requirespecial attention fromprofessionals.

Page 71: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Extreme Situations

In some cases, one’s fear of asituation or occurrence can be sosevere that it evolves into aphobia. A phobia is a negativefear of something that is so trulyintense it can affect anindividual’s life on a daily basis.Phobias often require help fromtrained professionals, asindividuals are often truly terrifiedof the object that generates theirfear.

Page 72: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Converting Fear into anAcceleration Initiator

Just as fear can affect someindividuals in a negative manner,it can propel others forward intogoals and can create motivation.Individuals can use fear tosucceed in business, at school,or in health and fitness, amongstmany other things. The fear offailure is sometimes strongenough to enhance motivation, determination, and courage tocomplete set tasks.

Utilizing fear as a motivator can

Page 73: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

propel entrepreneurs intosuccessful business endeavorsand encourage business ownersto take chances to facilitatebusiness growth. As businessprofessionals gain moreconfidence in their business, theywill soon discover that fear isshort-lived. This initial reaction issoon replaced by a commitmentto Superhero success andprofessional empowerment.

Page 74: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Barriers of BusinessEndeavors

One of the main reasons whyindividuals avoid entrepreneurshipis based on the fear of failure, loss of money, and makingmistakes. Yet, refusing to placeblame on superficialobjects/persons, meeting newpartners, and studying previousmistakes can resurrect abusiness and provide the powerone needs to embark on ajourney of entrepreneurship.

Page 75: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

A World Without Fear

Can you imagine a world wherefear was irrelevant? Ironicallyenough, the world would be apretty scary place without fear ofobjects or situations that areunsafe. As a result, fear plays ahuge role in keeping humanshealth and thriving. Makingmistakes is ultimately the job of atrue Superhero, while avoidingmistakes is the job of a villain.

Chapter 5

How To DiagnoseWhat Fears Are Most

Debilitating ToSuccess

Fear is the driving force behindmost of the obstacles in our lives. As stated earlier, some fears areeasy to recognize – fear of flying,or heights, or nervousness infront of a crowd. But othersremain hidden deep inside oursubconscious minds, creating

Page 77: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

blocks that stop us from realizingour potential and manifestingdreams for a better life.

In order to accomplish goals andcreate a vision of Superherosuccess, it’s essential to find andeliminate those hidden fears. Some strategies that anyone cantry at home include meditating, journaling, collage making andtapping. These activities can aidpeople in exploring memories andexperiences in order to shed lighton problems and their origins.

Page 78: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Meditation

Although often met withskepticism, meditation can helpidentify and cope with hiddenfears. Often poorly understood, meditation is simply the practiceof clearing clutter from the mindand opening a space that allowsus to listen to the still voice of ourown intuition. One part ofmeditation involves observing thethoughts that appear, andrecognizing the emotion behindthem, especially if it’s a fearfulone.

Page 79: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Meditation can be practiced inmany ways. The traditional formthat’s familiar to most of usinvolves sitting upright in acomfortable position on the flooror other surface, fingers touchingin one of the many mudras (handpositions) of yoga.

Breathing deeply, the meditatormight envision a mantra or aphrase, or simply observethoughts and breath. There arealso a host of mediation CDs andwebsites available to help withthis practice as well.

Other types of meditation involve

Page 80: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

activity, such as walking, runningor t’ai chi. However it’s practiced, though, meditation allows us topractice paying attention to thehidden parts of ourselves andfind fears and the emotionsassociated with them.

Page 81: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Journaling and OtherKinds of Writing

Exploring your life through writingcan help to uncover the fears andblocks that throw up barricadesto success. Journaling or memoirwriting can illuminate areas of thepast that created fears, andnumerous self-help guidesavailable both online and in printcan offer guidance in formulatingthe kinds of questions that canlead to insights.

A relatively new way of usingwriting to uncover the hidden

Collages and Mind Maps

For some, a visual representationof an aspect of life that needsattention can be helpful.Collages, vision boards and mindmaps are often used in coachingand therapy to help clientsvisualize problems and solutionsand to clarify goals. The mindmap is another visual techniquethat involves creating a page fullof connected ideas that arisefrom a single “seed thought” in acircle in the middle of the page.

Often used with a prompt or a

Tapping

Tapping is an increasinglypopular way to address hiddenfears. This technique, used intherapy and in daily life, involvessteady tapping on a set group ofpressure points on the bodywhile saying a series ofaffirmations. Points such as the“karate chop” point on the side ofthe hand, the side of the eye andother key places on the head andbody are said to help release theanger and other negativeemotions that threaten to derailsuccess.

Page 86: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Tapping, taught by a variety ofcoaches and online for self-study, is based on the idea thatthe body carries fears and thememory of negative experienceswithin its muscles, joints andtissues. Tapping is believed torelease these emotions andmemories, so practitioners targeta selected series of acupressurepoints while expressing self-acceptance and understanding.

Releasing the hidden fears thatcreate obstacles can be achallenging but necessary task ofself-development. Simplepractices that anyone can do at

Chapter 6

Defining A UniqueTreatment Plan To

Thwart External AndInternal Fears

Now that we have a goodunderstanding of fear and waysto address it, let’s look at buildinga treatment plan specific to yourneeds. Because without a plan, your Superhero will never see thelight of day. The first placeanyone needs to begin is with

Page 89: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

their thinking.

Page 90: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Confronting Fears andAnxiety

Therapists and personal coachesuse many methods to help clientsovercome their fears and anxiety.Fears and anxiety may not bebased on real information.Instead, they can be based onfaulty or illogical thinking.

One way to confront your fearsor anxiety is to think about whatis driving the fear and provokeyourself into feeling thosefeelings. No matter how intensethose feelings become, you begin

Page 91: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

to realize that these feelingsalone can not harm you and youare uncomfortable but safe andyou will survive this experience,as you always have in the past.As a result, you have less anxietyas you approach whatever hasbeen causing your fears.

Sometimes the charge behindmany fears is purely emotionaland once you realize that thefeeling is just that, you canovercome many fears that haveheld you back in the past. Youemotions should be used as aguide and when they don’t serveyou, they need to be quickly

Page 92: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

subdued and the situation needsto be met with a clearassessment of the situation.

Page 93: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Change Your ThoughtProcess

Another tool in analyzing yourfears is to keep a log of yourthoughts and associated feelingsthroughout especially challengingtimes. Anytime a seemingly newstress appears its time to see ifits one of your favorites making anew entrance. This method ofaddressing fears is commonlyused by many therapists and is akind of detective approach to seeif a common fear for you is stillunaddressed. The more you. Antie fears together, the better

Page 94: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

understanding you will have andthe more freedom you willexperience.

When you have a feeling of fearor anxiety, write down what youwere thinking and what washappening when the feelingstarted. After the experiencepasses, examine whether yourreaction was reasonable orlogical. If you keep a log of theseevents, you may discover adistinctive pattern over time andthis gives you a lot of power.

Negative thoughts often createnegative feelings, such as fear

Page 95: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

and anxiety. You may besurprised to find that you worry, think about catastrophes orpredict failure unconsciously andusually there is a snowball effectas you pile one negative thoughtonto another. You need to catchyourself and replace thesenegative thoughts one positiveone and you can quickly changethe outcome. Even if that positivethought has nothing to do withthe negative ones you werethinking. Simply turn your focusto something...anything positiveand you will have saves yourselfa lot of fearful emotions.

Page 96: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Then you can realize that yourfeelings of fear do not makesense, and you can begin toreplace faulty thought patternswith more effective ones. Insteadof thinking, “I will faint if I give aspeech,” replace that thoughtwith, “I know this topic and willgive a speech that is five minuteslong successfully.”

Page 97: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Analyze the Cost of Fear

Many people find that fearprevents them fromaccomplishing many of theirgoals. For business people, thecost can be tremendous. Fearcan stop you from trying out newbusiness strategies, launchingnew products or expanding intonew markets.

You can use a cost benefitanalysis to determine what fearis costing you. Many people dothis with their business risks, howabout doing it with your life as a

whole. Make a list of theadvantages of confronting yourfears and changing yourbehavior. Make a list of the costmentally and physically of lettingyour fear stop you from reachingyour goals and becoming aSuperhero in life and business.Place this where you can see itdaily.

When you compare the lists, youwill discover that it is worth it toconfront your fears and doanything to overcome them.Coping with your fear and takingaway its power may be initiallychallenging, but you will likely be

delighted with your Superherobegins to emerge.

Page 100: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Use Stress ManagementTechniques

Fear often provokes feelings ofmajor anxiety as your adrenalinespikes, your breathing increasesand your heart rate rises. Usingstress management techniquescan help you calm your feelingsand gain control on the road toconquering fear.

Try closing your eyes briefly andbreathing slowly through yournose. Think of images that arerelaxing, such as a beach, aforest or a special place you

Page 101: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

remember fondly. Tell yourselfyou are in control and are alwayssafe. Picture yourself as a fullfledged Superhero able to takeon anything in your path.

Other stress managementtechniques also work well forconfronting fear. Try distractingyourself with an activity such as acrossword puzzle when flying orlistening to music and singing toyourself before a speech.Exercise can also be an excellentway to work off excess energythat fear provokes. We haveheard of a famous salesman whojumps on and off of a chair in his

office before going into theboardroom to pitch a client.

Page 103: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

Positive Thinking

You can use positive thoughtsand images in a number of waysto help you overcome your fears.Repeatedly thinking positivethoughts and seeing positiveaffirming images retrains yourmind into letting go of your fears.Practice thinking, seeing andhearing positivity so that thoseconcepts become the norm, instead of the fearful ones.

Write down specific affirmingstatements about your fears andsay them out loud to yourself

Page 104: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

every day. Examples include, “Iam an effective speaker,” “Ienjoy speaking to potentialclients,” “I try something newevery day.” The most effectiveaffirmations contain positivestatements about yourself andare in the present-tense. I AMstatements are especiallypowerful in the Superhero world.

You can also create a positivescene of yourself, in your mind,of you without your fear. Forexample, you can imagineyourself getting on an airplane, completely relaxed and smiling ifyou have a phobia about flying.

Page 105: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

You might imagine a scene inwhich you are confidently giving aspeech, fully relaxed, to areceptive and appreciativeaudience. You can pictureyourself in fights and a capesurrounded by adoring fans!

Fear evokes normal emotionsthat everyone experiences. Byidentifying what provokes thesefeelings and addressing them, you can replace your anxiety withcalm self-confidence and becomethe Superhero you were born tobe.

Chapter 7

How To Create DailyAction Steps And

Implement Them ToBeat Fear

Karl Augustus Menninger, one ofAmerica’s early psychiatrists, once said ‘Fears are educatedinto us, and can, if we wish, beeducated out.’ This is a powerfulquote that instills hope withinpeople who are facing debilitatingfears in their everyday life. Most

Page 107: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

of you by now understand thatovercoming your fears is apossibility, but the question stillexists as to what is the best wayfor your specific fears.

Nothing in the world has everbeen obtained by a person whoonly spoke words when it cameto what they wanted out of life. This is true of overcoming fear aswell. If a person is reallyinterested in overcoming anyfears in their life that areoverwhelming them, then theymust actually set out a specificplan of action and go follow it.

Page 108: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

One of the best ways a personcan begin overcoming their mostintense fears is to create dailyaction steps addressing the topthree most influential fears sothat they can be dealt withquickly. There are several stepsto creating an effective dailyaction plan and implementing it.

The first step to creating a planto overcome a fear day by day isto be specific about the intendedgoal. Some people may want tocompletely overcome what mayseem to be an irrational fear, while others may just want to beable to face it without

Page 109: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

experiencing their commonreactions. Regardless of thehoped for end result, a personthat knows daily progress towarda goal is hugely effective, is farmore prepared than the personwho doesn’t.

Another important part of dailyaction steps is to createmeasurable milestones. Thesemust be very specific. A fewexample milestones could betalking about the fear, beingaround the fear or even flat outfacing the fear.

These milestones can be put into

Page 110: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

a list to help a person keep trackof their progress. Being able tosee progress will actually give aperson the drive to continue andhope, which is the most effectivetool in battling fear. Every littlemilestone that a person reachesadds to the chances that the fearwill eventually be overcome.

Knowing how to create dailyaction steps does not in itselfhelp a person overcome a fear; itsimply gives them guidelines tocreating the necessary steps. The steps and milestones can beused for any specific purposewhether it is personal, financial or

Page 111: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

any other fear in a person’s life. The important thing is to create aworkable plan for your specificfears and implement it.

An important point to recognize indealing with fear is the conceptof not being obsessed withuncertainty while realizing that itdoes exist. Too many timespeople are stricken by the fear ofthe unknown, whether it is takingon a new plan or deciding to getprofessional help with fear. Theydo this because they are hauntedby the simple illusion of security.

Helen Keller once said ‘Security

Page 112: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

is mostly a superstition. It doesnot exist in nature… life is eithera daring adventure or nothing.’These words carry the burden ofreality upon them. Few things inlife are certain, and a personwho is afraid of something simplybecause they think life hascertainty, is doing themselves aserious injustice.

Be assured the best way toovercome a fear is to face it withan action plan head-on. Themovie ‘Point Break’ said it bestwith the quote ‘Fear causeshesitation, and hesitation willcause your worst fears to come

Page 113: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

true.’ Eleanor Roosevelt pointedout that a person gains courage, strength and confidence withevery fear that they face.

Many times as your Superheroemerges you will realize thatthere really wasn’t much to beafraid of in the first place. Oncea fear is faced, it is put intoperspective, and once it is seenin a new light, it often doesn’t liveup to the heightened emotion yougave it in the first place.

The most important thing is toget started with at least one fearand take on the daily action

Page 114: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

steps as soon as possible.Sitting around waiting for thecourage to do something willresult in getting the same thingyou have always gotten. It isimperative in the life of aSuperhero that you recognizewhat needs to be done and setout to accomplish it.

Hesitation not only causes ourworst fears to become reality, italso makes our fears morepowerful. Thinking about handlinga fear and not doing it willincrease a person’s fear byallowing their mind to run amok.It is only when we are able to

Page 115: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

control fear that it does notcontrol us.

Page 116: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf

ConclusionAre you feeling a little moreconfident? Maybe even a littlefearless? Remember, life isentirely too short to allowyourself to be governed in anyway by that does not serve yourpurpose in life, and often feardoes exactly this: it derails us onour path. Many people allow fearto not only have input in theirlives, but literally control everythought they think. They die inregret instead of full of pride fora life well lived.

Page 118: How To Turn Fear Into Confidence - A Superhero Success Guide To Conquering Fear!.pdf
