Challenges are an inevitable part of thenon-profit world and Edgewood Children’s Center is no exception. But a good year is when the challenges are outweighed by the fulfillment of the opportunities that also come along. By that definition, 2007 was a good year.

Completing the funding puzzle for each of Edgewood’s programs is one of our largest and most constant challenges, but in 2007 that puzzle came together with the help of many generous friends. In this report you will find a list of every individual, organization, company, and foundation that made an investment in the lives of Edgewood’s kids and families. Every gift of every size is a critical part of how we were able to serve more than 400 children and family members each day, and we can’t thank our donors enough.

Edgewood also has countless volunteers to thank for their efforts. In today’s overscheduled world, time is such a special gift. From those who work directly with our kids to the work groups who energetically take on campus landscaping projects, we thank each and every volunteer for helping us stretch our time and agency resources by donating so much of yourself.

To everyone who helped Edgewood overcome the challenges and fulfill the opportunities that came our way in 2007, thank you. You are truly part of Edgewood’s family!

Sincerely Wayne G. CrullPresident & CEO

Dear Friends of Edgewood Children’s Center

2007 Annual Report 3

Samantha’s StoryBy Laura Albers, MS, PLPC, Day Treatment Therapist

At Edgewood Children’s Center, “success stories” happen every day. Up and down the hallways of the school, you will see children in their classrooms working hard, solving problems with staff and peers, processing their emotions appropriately, learning and practicing social skills, etc. These are children with very severe behavior, emotional, developmental, and communication disorders, and often children that have been in as many as 10 or 12 other placements before coming to Edgewood.

One “success story” that stands out from our Day Treatment Program is about a girl named Samantha. Samantha was a very impulsive, aggressive 6 year-old when she began at Edgewood. She had a past history of refusing to complete any schoolwork, would not play with the other children, and was having full-blown rages in which she would physically attack her teachers. Additionally Samantha had made numerous suicide attempts, including jumping off from high places, putting her head in a plastic bag, and asking other children to help her die. There were also reports that Samantha liked to hurt animals, including her own pets.

Samantha’s long-term treatment goals included the following: decrease her impulsive behaviors while increasing her compliant behaviors, address and process her suicidal feelings and attempts, and teach her appropriate coping and social skills. These goals were addressed with Samantha throughout her school day through classroom, recreational, and therapeutic avenues.

Samantha’s classroom environment was very structured, routine, and consistent. A daily schedule was posted on the chalkboard to ensure Samantha knew what was going to happen during her school day. She was to come into the classroom, put her belongings in their proper spot, and immediately get started on her schoolwork, raising her hand and asking for help as needed. Rewards, such as free time and playing on the computer, were allotted once Samantha com-pleted her morning schoolwork and then again when her afternoon work was completed. The classroom operates on a point system in which the children earn points for appropriate behavior like completing their schoolwork, interacting appropriately with their peers, following staff directions, etc. There are both immediate and delayed rewards built into the system as well as clear consequences for misbehavior. Being a bright girl, Samantha quickly learned there were consequences for her behavior and that it “paid off” to complete her schoolwork and follow staff directions. She began to excel in her schoolwork, which not only was rewarded, but also more importantly began to build her low self-esteem.

Samantha participated in individual therapy twice a week. In individual therapy, she was taught coping skills to deal with her anxiety, frustration, anger, and sadness. Some of the skills Samantha worked on were deep breathing, muscle relaxation, journaling, cognitive restructuring, taking a cool down break, and simply talking about her feelings. She would then practice and role-play these skills in session, in the classroom, and at home. Samantha worked on handling redirections from staff and accepting “no” appropriately. Problem-solving was also an important issue addressed.

In group therapy, which Samantha engaged in three times a week, she learned and practiced social skills. Some of the skills taught were good sportsmanship, how to handle rude or disrespectful peers, table manners, anger management, making friends, and self-esteem. Samantha was very shy when she first began group therapy, but after seeing how her peers participated and learning how the group therapy sessions operated, she began increasing her participation. The months before Samantha left Edgewood, she was a leader in the classroom and in group therapy, frequently providing insightful comments for her peers’ benefit.Samantha also received family therapy services. Fortunately for Samantha, both her parents were very involved in her treatment at Edgewood and would regularly participate in therapy sessions and/ or phone calls. Learning how to communicate with each other to ensure everyone’s needs are being heard and met was a big focus of therapy. The family was very open to suggestions and trying new techniques, which aided in Samantha’s treatment.

Though Samantha did not need these services, Edgewood also provides occupational therapy, speech and language, and tutoring. Additionally, Edgewood offers family and community support services, respite care, and residential facilities all designed to further treat and strengthen the children and families we serve.

Another goal at Edgewood Children’s Center is to make the transition as smooth as possible for our children. Samantha was at Edgewood for approximately a year and a half and had made tremendous gains academically, therapeutically, and socially. Therefore, Edgewood, Samantha, and her parents decided it was time for her to begin her transition to public school. The transition began slowly at first, allowing Samantha ample time to grow accustomed to the new school environment and to continue practicing all of her new skills. She attended public school in the morning and came to Edgewood in the afternoon. During this time, Samantha and I continued working on her social and therapeutic skills. I gave her homework to introduce herself to a new classmate every day and we role-played what to say to him or her. Samantha was able to complete this homework on most days and we would address her success. After six months of this transition, Samantha began attending public school full time. I receive updates on Samantha every few months, and she continues to do well in public school. Her parents are so proud and thankful of all that she learned at Edgewood and seeing the young lady she has transformed into today.

Edgewood Children’s Center truly is, as our mission statement says, committed to the compassionate care and treatment of the children and families we serve. I hope that in introducing Samantha, it is clear the care and commitment Edgewood Children’s Center offers to all those we serve. Behind each “success story” is comp-assionate staff, a child with so much love and potential, and people in the community that donate their time, money, and love— people who believe in what Edgewood stands for and offers.

Licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, case management social workers, certified special education teachers, adjunctive therapists, and psychiatric, educa- tional, medical, and psychological consultants are all an integral part of Edgewood’s staff. Our policy states that a physician, mental health professional, child welfare agency, educator or school district, juvenile court, insurance provider, or individual family may refer children and families to Edgewood. The Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children accredits Edgewood Children’s Center.

Edgewood’s programs are funded through a combination of resources, including state reimbursements, purchase of service contracts, United Way, and the generous donations of individuals, corporations and foundations. Please look at the listing of donors in this report to see all of Edgewood’s generous friends that join us in making sure that every child counts.

DAY TREATMENTChildren who come to Edgewood for Day Treatment have such intense emotional and behavioral problems that they cannot be successful in a traditional educational setting. Each classroom has 8-10 children, staffed by a certified special education teacher, a therapist, an aide, and at times a volunteer. The low student-adult ratio provides the individual attention needed to help each child make educational and emotional gains. In addition to classroom work, each child receives individual and group therapy. Adjunctive therapies, such as art and music therapy, are also an integral part of the treatment at Edgewood. Speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, and remedial reading are offered to children who need specialized help in those areas. Autism Services—Edgewood’s Day treatment program also serves children with Autism spectrum disorders. Sensory integration is incorporated with the structured academic routines to maximize each student’s level of functioning. Family therapy and parent involve-ment are important aspects of the day treatment program and contribute directly to its success.

FAMILY & COMMUNITY SERVICESThe focus of the Family & Community Services Program is to keep families together safely through in-home crisis stabilization services. Participating families may be at risk of a child being removed or re-removed from the home due to neglect or abuse, psychiatric hospitalization, or involvement with the juvenile justice system. Quite frequently families experience issues such as poverty, substance abuse, developmental disabilities, medical issues or mental health concerns. Services include: individual and family therapy; skill development in conflict resolution, communications, parenting, and money management; and linkage to community resources.

RESIDENTIAL TREATMENTThe Residential Treatment Program at Edgewood Children’s Center is dedicated to the treatment of children and adolescents who have experienced extensive trauma and who struggle with the debilitating effects of a variety of emotional disturbances. Serving up to 40 children at a time, treatment at Edgewood is intensive and is designed to individually address each child’s psycho-social and educational needs.

PERMANENCY SERVICESEdgewood’s goal for each child in foster care is a permanent, loving home. Permanency can mean reunification with a parent, adoption into a new family, or guardianship. Edgewood case managers work closely with foster families and foster children to ensure an appropriate placement, that the children are in school, and that they are receiving regular medical and dental care. If reunification with the biological family isn’t possible, case managers look for alternative permanency plans such as adoption or kinship placement.

2007 Polo Picnic

St. Louis Benefit Polo thrilled spectators again on Saturday,

June 23, 2007 as they took to the field to play what is thought

to be the oldest organized sport of any kind. Despite a few rain

showers, nearly 200 guests gathered at the private fields of

Smith and Janet McGehee, located adjacent to the Landings at

Spirit Golf Club, for the annual Edgewood Polo Picnic.

2007 Annual Report 9

This annual event has turned into a truly sensational family outing, offering something for everyone. Adults mingled in the Family and VIP tents, while the younger guests took advan- tage of the children’s area, which featured a bounce house, pony rides, caricatures, and face painting. To top off the day, each child received a polo ball and the opportunity for autographs from the St. Louis Benefit Polo players. Once again the St. Louis Benefit Polo produced the glossy keepsake Polo Program, of which 90 percent of ad proceeds sold by Edgewood went directly to support our programs. Thanks to St. Louis Benefit Polo, founded in 1982 to coordinate charity polo matches in St. Louis, for its continued support. Edgewood also thanks the 2007 Polo Picnic sponsors and donors who made this year’s event possible and everyone who came out to enjoy the afternoon. Your support of Edgewood’s children and families is greatly appreciated!
