With products specified for many prestigious building projects worldwide, this Project Book illustrates a small selection of installations completed closer to home during 2014.

Howe Green’s high quality access covers have been installed in the concourse at London Bridge Station in a phase of works forming part of The London Bridge Redevelopment Scheme. The installation

was carried out by the specialist contactor DMC Contracts Ltd for Costain.

Howe Green’s heavy duty 1050 Series access covers were specified and fitted above mechanical and electrical services feeding the ticket line. The run of covers, which spans more than 25 metres, will ensure that when routine or emergency maintenance is needed going forward, gaining access to essential service points will be no problem.

DMC inlaid the surface of the covers with a ‘flamed pink’ granite paving matching the existing flooring within the concourse and providing an uninterrupted flooring surface

for the best possible aesthetic finish. Howe Green manufactured the covers to order. They were fabricated in 316-grade stainless steel and with a deeper capacity to accommodate a thicker granite floor covering, a standard feature of the 1050 Series.

The panels sit flush with the surrounding floor to prevent slips and trips and are double sealed, ensuring optimum hygiene. Importantly, they are also tamper proof for increased security, an imperative feature in

a critical hub location with over 50 million passengers a year.

Making sure the station remains open is one of the key challenges facing Network Rail as the scheme continues. The 1050 Series was designed for the most demanding internal and external environments. Capable of accepting heavy and sustained traffic – up to 6 tonne pneumatic tyre loads - the hatches are just the ticket for the highly trafficked London Bridge station, the fourth busiest in the country.

Architecturally, Manchester Cathedral is modern by Cathedral standards and was built up around the mediaeval Collegiate Church by the Victorians. In the late early and mid 19th Century, the original ledger stones were replaced with concrete and a network of copper pipe acting as an early form of in-floor heating.

Heating the Cathedral from the floor was essentially the same method used over 150 years later but with only 60% of the heating pipework working in recent years, a little intervention of the earthly kind was needed to make the facilities fit for the 21st century.

Specialist architects Lloyd Evans Prichard planned and implemented the project, overseeing a painstaking excavation process, the removal of the old antiquated heating system and subsequent installation of a new network of mechanical and electrical chambers across the entire body of the main Cathedral building, including its Nave, aisles and chapels. As a leading developer and manufacturer of floor, ceiling and wall access solutions, Howe Green’s access covers were chosen to provide reliable yet virtually invisible access to these chambers, for best aesthetics and to ensure easy maintenance going forward.

Over 70 of their 7500 Series stainless steel access covers were made, each to a bespoke size and specification to fit precisely with new Burlington Stone slabs being installed. Several multipart covers were needed too, the largest at 1747 x 853mm mirroring the dimension of Victorian voids underneath

the stone floor. Multiple frame and cover sections ensured the frame weights met HSE manual handling requirements.

On a more unusual note, Howe Green also designed a special cover grating to allow air supply to the blower working the bellows of the Cathedral’s remarkable organ; famously damaged in a series of bombing raids during the war but repaired, maintained and used to this day. All the stainless steel access panels supplied were designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, without any detriment to strength or quality. Fitted quickly and unobtrusively into all types of hard floor finishes, the installation of the floor access panels allowed work on site to flow smoothly with the covers sitting 100% flush with the floor with no risk of slips or trips.

But in such a historic and prestigious building, the decision to use Howe Green access covers was not just about practicality; it was also essential that the access panels blended in seamlessly with the floor to achieve the required aesthetic. “We were delighted to have been involved with this project,” said Richard Centa, Howe Green’s Sales and Marketing Director. “The appearance of a completely continuous floor was achieved, despite the huge network of mechanical and electrical chambers underneath it. With such a robust access solution in place, this landmark building will be easier to maintain going forward - and its many visitors will be much warmer!”.

Howe Green’s involvement with Crossrail is gaining momentum as the specialist manufacturer works to provide easy access to building services at various sites, including those at Canary Wharf.

At Adams Place on the approach to Canary Wharf, a series of large linear brick planters spanning over 4m2 each is under construction. They will house contemporary LED lighting designed to add to the dynamics of the area’s striking urban landscape.

Howe Green worked with the external stone contractor Szerelmey Ltd, to develop a bespoke wall access cover encasing power supplies and circuitry feeding the lights and ensuring ongoing access for maintenance is quick and easy. The stylish wall access covers are manufactured from 5mm stainless steel, as opposed to 1.5mm for the standard Waldor.

These custom-made covers are lockable for added security and feature a broad show edge creating maximum aesthetic contrast against the smooth, glazed planters.

Howe Green’s 1050 Series stainless steel floor access covers have also been manufactured to order for the walkways of Adams Place, each with an additional load bearing specified to accommodate the latest in aerial high-rise fire fighting appliances.

Inside the station itself, over 30 of Howe Green’s 5000 series stainless steel floor access covers have been installed within Canary Wharf’s ticket hall and back of house for esy access to essential services.

The WCEC designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) and constructed by Mace is one of the largest redevelopment projects in the British Museum’s 260 year history.

Page 9: Howe Green Project Book 2014

Located in the north-west corner of the Museum’s Bloomsbury estate, the £135 million Centre provides a new public exhibitions gallery, state-of-the-art laboratories and studios, world class stores for the collection, as well as facilities to support the Museum’s extensive UK and international loan programme. RSHP needed a reliable access cover solution for the interior scheme to provide a series of service points at regular intervals throughout the gallery’s 1,100sqm floor area.

With aesthetics and performance of equal importance, Howe Green manufactured a circular access cover in 316-grade stainless steel to provide a stylishly discreet solution capable of withstanding a 40kn load. Each box section had built-in cable access and voice/data plug-in points and slotted steel lids were made for when in use.

The access covers also accepted coloured polished concrete inserts made to match the surrounding Ed Lazenby floor and provide an uninterrupted floor finish when required. The WCEC building consists of five pavilions (one of which is submerged below the ground) and the design is sensitive to the British Museum’s existing architecture, connecting to the historic building whilst maintaining its own identity.

Howe Green’s 7500 Series access covers are providing a high quality access solution at The Nottingham Hub, as part of the station’s comprehensive enhancement project.

An alliance of Network Rail, East Midlands Trains, Nottingham City Council and Taylor Woodrow, The Hub is designed to increase capacity, improve performance and integrate transport options serving the city.

It also incorporates the Nottingham Area Resignalling project and the NET (Nottingham Express Transit) tramway works. Over 40 of Howe Green’s heavy-duty 7500 Series stainless steel access covers and frames were installed within the station building and back of house by flooring specialists

DMC Contracts Ltd. The resulting network of access points will ensure that essential drainage, mechanical and electrical services running under floor can be quickly and easily reached for routine or emergency servicing.

Suitable anywhere heavy loading is required – the 7500 Series access covers can accommodate a 5 tonne pressure from a pneumatic tyre – Howe Green’s access panels were ideal for the busy Hub, with its annual footfall of 6.5 million and rising. As well as being highly durable, the panels also offered the best solution for cleanliness and safety. They are double sealed to prevent dirt and grease ingress and once set into the substrate, they sit flush with their surround guarding against the risk of slips and trips.

Page 11: Howe Green Project Book 2014

Specially designed recessed lids also enable the panels to be tiled or accept other forms of hard floor finish, to match their surround perfectly.

This enabled DMC to create an uninterrupted and continuous surface of Quiligotti Terrazzo floor tiles spanning 2000m2 within the station’s south concourse and Grade II listed porte-cochère, which dates back to 1903 and features an elegant glazed roof.

With an industry reputation for excellent service, products and technical support, Howe Green has established itself as a leading producer of floor, wall and access panels over its 30-year history.

The choice of Howe Green solutions for The Nottingham Hub project stands as testament to the company’s ability to deliver solutions for infrastructure, which have included all major tube, DLR and overground installations in the UK as well as many key destinations worldwide.

Howe Green’s covers are excellent quality which makes a big difference on site. It’s easy to set tiles into the cover inlay which helps save time and they integrate with the Terrazzo flooring very well” commented Conor McCann of DMC Group.
