Aloha!

The College of Business Administration has implemented a number of

changes in response to the economic downturn while the national econ-

omy is struggling to recover from the shock of recession. We now have

two newly formed departments and we are currently redesigning our

website to reflect these changes. In addition to the MBA program, our

College now includes the Master of Arts in Human Resources

Management (MAHRM), the Master of Arts in Organizational Change

(MAOC), and the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS).

These programs are perfect complements to our MBA program and pro-

vide prospective students with multiple educational paths to choose from

when they are considering a graduate degree.

A recent national study has identified “hot areas” where there will be high

demand for employees with master‟s degrees in the near future. The top

six on this list include: consulting, health care, information technology,

finance, environmental practices and government/public sector. Students at HPU are fortunate to have all of

these options available to them in the graduate programs offered by the four colleges.

Our MAOC program attracts employees from a number of large organizations including Booz Allen

Hamilton, because it offers a number of courses in consulting and prepares our graduates to manage change in

any type of organization, whether for profit or not-for-profit. MAOC courses are available online or in the

classroom and taught by faculty who have several years of corporate experience in addition to holding

doctoral degrees in management.

It‟s no secret that companies are constantly being bombarded with all kinds of information growing at an

exponential rate. So how do you make sense of the pertinent information available and manage the employees

developing the technology that allows us to collect, store and process the vast amounts of information needed

to run a viable business? The MSIS Program at HPU allows its participants to master the skills that are abso-

lutely necessary to become a successful manager in the information technology field.

Much like the other three graduate degrees offered by the CBA, the MAHRM degree arms our students with

tools that are applicable in all organizations, no matter how large or small they are. The strength of an HR

department can determine an organization‟s future— either help the company prosper or be the cause of its

demise. HPU‟s MAHRM program enables its students to understand and develop the skills necessary to

become successful managers in the HR field. In addition to the graduate program in HR, we also offer a

professional certificate that is available for students with a baccalaureate degree who would like to keep

current in the field.

This issue of the CBA newsletter highlights some of the developments in the college and I‟m confident that all

of these changes will strengthen our programs further and allow us to prosper. I wish all of you a productive

and successful Fall semester.

Mahalo!

Cody C. Baretta received the first annual Wall Street Journal Student

Achievement Award for the Department of Financial Economics and

Information Systems at Hawai‟i Pacific University .

A small award ceremony was held a the CBA, organized by Dr. John

Karbens, Associate Professor of Accounting and Finance, where Cody was

presented his award by Peter Eliason, WSJ Representative.

Congratulations to Cody as the first HPU student to achieve this honor.

HPU Student Receives Student Achievement Award

College of Business Administration now consists of two departments. The Department of Financial Economics and

Information Systems, under Associate Dean Dr. Warren Wee, houses Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information

Systems and Management Sciences programs. Dr. Penny Pence Smith is Chair of the Department of Management

and Marketing which houses Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, Organizational Change, and

Travel Industry Management programs. This restructuring enables us to build on the synergy created by bringing

together closely related management programs and enables our faculty to collaborate on joint projects that transcend

multiple subject areas.

In September we welcomed EMBA III cohort to HPU. This

year‟s class is as diverse as our past cohorts and includes

engineers, doctors, middle to upper level managers and

executives from a number of companies in Hawai‟i.

The College of Business Administration will begin offering

MBA and MAOC courses on the military bases and online

on an accelerated calendar, i.e. 4 ten-week terms per

academic year effective Spring 2010. This will help the

CBA expand its reach to potential students which is

consistent with our strategic plan.

College of Business Administration Highlights

HPU Marketing Students Offer Their Services

Students in Hawai‟i Pacific University„s graduate-level Integrated Marketing course have been working with Hawai‟i

businesses and non-profit organizations to help develop their marketing programs.

In the last ten years, the class has written marketing plans for over 75 companies, including Zippy‟s, Waikiki Beach

Walk, Maui Brand Sugar, Wahoo‟s Fish Tacos, Waikiki Aquarium, Vera Wang Boutique, and The Hawai‟i Theatre.

The students not only develop strategies, but also create or redesign promotional materials and advertising, public

relations strategies, or suggest new niche markets and how to pursue them. They‟ll look at web marketing, pricing,

sales, location, customer service, packaging, direct mail and other marketing tactics.

Companies interested in taking part in the program can contact the College of Business Administration.

IS6120 Students Completes Hanaholo and the HDOT Projects

IS6120 students, under the direction of Dr.

Cathrine Linnes, Assistant Professor of Informa-

tion Systems, gained real-world experience

working on projects for the local community.

The Hanaholo website project in Hawaiian

translates to “speedy work” and was inspired by

the European website MyHammer.com. The

website facilitates communications between the

tradesman and handyman in easy and convenient

ways by creating a platform that allows them to

quote on jobs posted by clients. Users have the

opportunity to get free job leads, which they can

bid on or ignore according to their specific

circumstances.

The website itself was hosted off site by Bluehost.com. The service-dependent portions of the website were coded in

PHP. This coding was "from scratch" and does not require any particular software development tools other than a text

editing program. All of the operational data required for the site to run is retrieved from a MySQL database. The

creation of tables and all other pertinent database building and editing tasks is carried out via the use of MySQL

management programs such as phpMyAdmin when only web access is available, or MYSQLyog in a more prepared

environment.

The layout of the web page was built around skeleton elements created from scratch, placed and edited through the use

of the Adobe CS4 Dreamweaver. Most page design elements were carried out through the use of Cascading Styling

Sheets (CSS) and form validation, through AJAX.

A second team assisted Intergraph Corporation

(INGR) in creating a new system for the Ha-

wai‟i Department of Transportation (HDOT),

Highways Division, to access and manage its

data more effectively.

The project team utilized Oracle Database 10g

Express Edition as requested by the client. The

system employ a 3-tier client-server architecture

in which user interface, functional process logic,

and data access were developed on separate

platforms.

The system allows authenticated users to view

sidewalk data on an Intranet site which allow

selected users to modify the database via the

web interface. Modification of the database

included adding new data, and deleting and editing the existing data. Constraints were implemented in the system, and

pick-lists were used to reduce the chances of users entering invalid data.

With the system created by HPU‟s team of student, HDOT will gain new desired functionality for its Portal.

Furthermore, HDOT will increase efficiency and effectiveness in design and construction of the public highway

infrastructure because the information that it is based upon will be more precise and reliable.

HPU’s Supports the Step Up Diploma Project

Dr. John Kearns, Hawai‟i Pacific University Vice President of Academic

Affairs has received a Board of Education Award from BOE Vice Chair

and CBA‟s Dr. Lei Ahu-Isa for HPU‟s Involvement with the Step Up

Diploma Project.

The “Step Up Campaign” is a joint project of Board of Education

members, officials from the Department of Education, the University of

Hawai‟i, and Hawai‟i Pacific University.

The campaign encourages students to sign up for the Board Recognition

Diploma so they will be better prepared for college and a career. The

diploma, also known as the “Step Up Diploma,” will be awarded to the

graduating classes of 2013 and beyond. It includes more challenging

classes in math, science and writing, and requires students to complete a

senior project.

"Today‟s campaign launch shows that our

educators, students and businesses agree

that raising academic achievement is not an

option," said Board of Education Vice

Chairperson Dr. Lei Ahu Isa. "It is a neces-

sity."

The University of Hawai‟i at Manoa, Chaminade University and Hawai‟i Pacific

University, are institutions which will all accept high school graduates who earn a Board

Recognition Diploma.

Several business and organizations also supporting the Step Up Campaign:

Kamehameha Schools, which will offer a “Kamehameha Scholars Recognition Diploma Incentive” to all

students who complete a Board Recognition Diploma, and provide them with additional funds through the

Kamehameha Scholars Merit Scholarship program.

The Hawai‟i Carpenters Union which has pledged to waive its entrance math exam when applicants present

their Board Recognition Diploma during an open enrollment for the Hawai‟i Carpenters or Drywall

Apprenticeship Program.

City Mill which has waived its pre-employment math test for Board Recognition Diploma recipients,

allowing them to move straight to the interview phase.

The Boys & Girls Club that has included completion of the Board Recognition Diploma among its criteria to

award Youth Education Enrichment Scholarships.

The Fukunaga Scholarship Foundation which will require students to have a Board Recognition Diploma to

be eligible for an award beginning with the Class of 2013.

Global Professional in Human Resources

Dr. Cheryl Crozier Garcia, Associate Professor of Human Resource Management

and program chair of the MAHRM program, recently earned certification as a

Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). Dr. Crozier Garcia is the first

HR professional in the state of Hawai‟i to earn this certification. She received her

MBA in HRM in 1988 from HPU. She is also a certified Senior Professional in

Human Resources.

The certification, awarded by the HR Certification Institute, signifies that Dr.

Crozier Garcia possesses the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in

international human resource management necessary to pass a rigorous

examination demonstrating a mastery of the body of knowledge in the field. The

HR Certification Institute awards two other levels of certification: Professional in

Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).

“Today, more than 98,000 HR professionals hold a certification from The HR

Certification Institute which demonstrates a mastery of key HR principles,” said

Executive Director Mary Power, CAE.

To become certified, an applicant must pass a comprehensive examination and

demonstrate a strong background of professional human resource experience.

The HR Certification Institute is the credentialing body for human resource professionals and is affiliated with the

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human

resource profession. The HR Certification Institute's purpose is to promote the establishment of professional standards

and to recognize professionals who meet those standards.

HPU Graduate Appointed to Lead Recruitment in International Admissions

Hawai„i Pacific University, Business Administration graduate Mickey Kromann-

Jensen has been named Assistant Director of International Admissions at HPU.

Kromann-Jensen will provide leadership and direction for the recruitment,

admission, and enrollment of students from northern Europe.

Before joining HPU, Kromann-Jensen was a management consultant for

Honolulu-based Hospitality Advisors, and prior to that, a media consultant and

entrepreneur in the advertising industry in Denmark. He has also worked as an

assistant project manager for Vilnius College in Lithuania.

“I look forward to strengthening HPU‟s position and recognition in the northern

European countries, to achieve the objectives of HPU and ensure a culturally

diverse student body,” Kromann-Jensen said. “As markets change all the time, it‟s

vital that we, as an international learning institution, adapt to changes in the global

environment to better serve our students and the community. Our continuing

presence in the international markets will make that happen.” Mickey Kromann-Jensen Graduated

with a BS in Business Administration

in Travel Industry Management from

HPU in 2006.

Dr. Cheryl Crozier Garcia, earns first

certification as a global professional

in Human Resources.

Page 9: HPU CBA Newsletter Fall 2009

CBA Department Chair for Management and Marketing, Dr. Penny Pence Smith, presented a

research study on physician-patient communication at the fall HPU Faculty Scholarship Day at

the Hawai‟i Loa Campus. A collaborative study between Dr. Smith and MACOM graduate

Andrea Ciletti, the current research is the fourth in a series initiated two years ago. The

research has tracked the need for tools and techniques to increase the efficiency of the first

provider-patient exchange/visit, potential techniques valued by the providers, empowerment of

the patient with the use of a standardized on-line questionnaire/tool, and now acceptance of that

tool by the actual diagnosing doctor or provider.

Currently under managed care reimbursement requirements and restrictions, many primary care

doctors may only spend 10-20 minutes with a patient. Research has shown that a minimum of

30 minutes discussion between provider and patient is necessary to discover all pertinent

information to make a successful and accurate diagnosis. Previous research in this particular

study has shown that most front line healthcare providers (physicians, physician assistants or

nurse practitioners) feel hampered by the managed care time restrictions and that such as well-researched and proven

scripts might be helpful to them. Ms. Ciletti‟s study, the third phase, suggested that patient preparation prior to the visit

may be beneficial to the outcome and that patients would be wiling to use a standardized form to prepare.

Dr. Smith‟s current phase of the study focuses on the provider‟s willingness

to use, and opinion of, the same standardized form. Final results will be

available in the spring.

Hawai'i Pacific University's FALL 2009 Faculty Scholarship Day, was held on Thurs-

day, September 3, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., at the Hawai'i Loa Campus. TLC

administers and a Faculty Assembly committee plans the twice yearly event which

provides a venue where faculty share their research, scholarship, teaching practices,

and community work to colleagues and graduate students.

Martin & MacArthur CEO Speaks of Growth and Profit in Tough Times

The Pappas Entrepreneurial Series at Hawai„i

Pacific University recently hosted Michael Tam,

CEO of the Hawaiian fine hardwood furniture

company Martin & MacArthur; and Boris Huang,

a local artist and alumnus of the HPU Master of

Business Administration degree program.

In “Growth and Profitability in Tough Times: The

Story of Martin & MacArthur,” Michael Tam, a

native of Maui, spoke of his entrepreneurial vision

for preserving Hawai„i‟s heritage and culture and

how he has embarked on growth and expansion in

tough economic times.

Tam discussed his business rationale, and the

steps he is taking for brave strategic action that

challenges the assumptions of what businesses

must do in an economic downturn.

Tam said he believes that as long as a company has good bones and soul, it will turn around. “We must keep dreaming

and looking for opportunities.”

Boris Huang, local artist and HPU MBA alumnus, was discovered by

Tam as part of their effort to bring in local artists and craftsmen into

Martin & MacArthur stores. Huang creates feather leis, which are sold

at Martin & MacArthur.

At one time he was a member of the Pappas audience. “It was me

sitting in the crowd, and it was the opportunity to attend a Pappas event

that got me out in the business world,” Huang said.

“As students, we can learn a lot in the classroom, but there is also so

much to be learned from business men and women who are actually out

there.”

Marilyn and Jim Pappas have made the Pappas Entrepreneurial Series

possible with their generous sponsorship. Their contribution enables

students to meet entrepreneurs and gain insights for developing

entrepreneurial skills and mindset that are essential for

success.
