Intern Spotlight A look into another intern’s experience

How Did I Get Here Natalia Gruzdeva, Business Services

My life in the United States started eight years ago, when the plane arriving from Moscow landed in JFK Airport on a hot summer night. Standing there at the gate exit, looking at the lights of New York, I thought, “What do I do next?” I had two changes of clothes in my suitcase and $80 in my pocket. Fast-forward to year 2011. I am accepted to one of the best schools in Philadelphia, to the university of my dreams – Drexel University! And even more, I am now an intern at Comcast, a cutting-edge company, leader in its field. How did I get here? The euphoria of moving to a new country subsided after a few months living in the States; next came a realization that an American dream does not come easily. College was out of question for me at that time: I spent everything I earned to pay for rent and food and did not have any family to fall back to. Eventually, I started my own family here. I now have an amazing husband and a wonderful baby. My husband was in the same situation as me: alone in a strange place. After we got married, we started planning on how to achieve our very own American dream. Since I was the one who knew English, we decided that I will quit my job and start attending a college. Thankfully, I was accepted to a two-year private school in Jenkintown. Meanwhile, my husband had to work long hours six or seven days a week to pay for my tuition because the government does not give grants to international students. Those were hard but, at the same time, exciting two years. I knew that I was getting closer to my goal. My next step was to be accepted to Drexel. When that objective was reached, I was elated but a bit scared as well: how will I fit in? I was a non-traditional student in so many ways. I was older than the majority of people in my class, I already had a family, I was a girl with an IT major, and I was Russian. However, my fears were needless; I felt like I belong there from the first days.

Today, at Comcast, I have the same feeling of “belonging”. I like what I do here and I feel very needed. The opportunity to work for a Company like Comcast is a big deal for someone like me. However, when I look back at my journey, I realize that I earned it. My hard work and efforts were definitely worth it. And although my journey is far from being complete, I can already see that American dream is a possibility, and even more – a reality.

You Got the Internship, Now What?

Real opportunities, real experience

By: Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

“Experience is not what happens to you; it is what you do with what happens to you.” ~ Aldous Huxley

So you have just completed your third (or second or

first) week as a Comcast intern. You cannot even begin to count the number of handshakes, trainings or team meetings that you have been a part of so far. By now, you should have a working list of goals that you want to achieve both in your department and at Comcast. This internship offers you an opportunity to test-drive a new career or learn a new skill with the ultimate goal of creating a job for yourself where you are or enhance your future goals. Now what?

Well, here are five tips to guide you towards a

successful internship:

1. You may delay, but time will not. ~Benjamin Franklin Be on time. If you are scheduled to be at work at 9:00am, try to arrive at least five minutes early. Give yourself time to get settled so that you can BEGIN working on time.

2. Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. ~Winston Churchill Stay positive. Unfortunately, you are not always going to be asked to do things that you want to do. That’s life! But maintaining a positive, can-do attitude will make you someone that coworkers want to work with and someone your boss may consider keeping around full-time. Tackle all tasks with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.

3. Look for opportunities to stretch yourself. Maybe you were asked to photocopy or edit documents all day. Take that opportunity to pay attention the content of these documents. Show people that are aware of what is happening in your department and that you have something to contribute.

4. “Who questions much, shall learn much, and retain much.” Ask questions. If you encounter something that you honestly don’t understand, seek advice and raise questions from your supervisor or manager. You are not expected to know everything but the sooner you learn the ins and outs of the daily tasks of your job, the better off you will be. Request to go to meetings that are relevant, or set up informational meetings with other employees who are in roles that may be of interest to you.

5. NETWORK! NETWORK! NETWORK! You are surrounded by individuals from various backgrounds and disciplines. Be sure to build professional relationships with your supervisor (s) and other managers inside and outside your department. Write the names of the individuals you meet and ask for business cards. Comcast offers an abundance of professional development workshops, trainings and social events. TAKE ADVANTAGE and

enjoy yourself!

Intern Spotlight A look into another intern’s experience

Family Matters Sylvia Khuu, Human Resources

What made me interested in Comcast? Exactly the

people reading this and the people who make up this company. Every person in this building is warm, welcoming, and passionate about what they do within Comcast. That’s precisely what I wanted in an internship with Comcast, a company that is passionate about what they do. Not a day goes by without someone saying “hello” to one another. This is by far the best internship I have ever had.

I am the youngest child of six. Yes, SIX! What made me realize how amazing it is to come from such a big family is that I know I will never be alone and that I will always have someone to look up to. They drove me to become successful and to find a career in the future that I love.

I always had a passion for sciences as a child and had a dream of becoming a Pharmacist. During my freshmen year, I realized that I could not see myself working alone in a laboratory or in a local pharmacy; I wanted to be surrounded by other individuals, travel, and learn from other people about their lives and future careers. I changed my major my sophomore year and I now want to become a Human Resources Recruiter. I am currently entering my senior year at Temple and majoring in Human Resource Management. I am involved with the student professional organization with Human Resource Management, Asian Student Association, Vietnamese Student Association, and work at the student center during the school year. I believe my background and my upbringing with my older siblings made me who I am today and I am looking forward to furthering my knowledge here at Comcast.

In my current position as a Human Resource Intern, I am responsible for assisting with the coordination of special projects and social events for the Comcast Internship Program. It has not only prepared me professionally, but it has allowed me to apply hands on experience to my academics. I am confident that this opportunity with prepare me with the skills and knowledge it takes to obtain a full time job in the future.

I’ve only been here for two weeks now, but let’s just say it’s been one ride I don’t want to get off of. I hope I can see all of you soon and looking forward to meeting everyone within Comcast if that’s humanly possible!

Building Your Personal Brand

Brand yourself for the career you want, not the job you have.

By Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

Stop for a minute and think about that shirt you’re

wearing---one look at the man on the horse with the polo stick tells everyone the quality of things you like. That purse you are carrying with the “C’s” covering the fabric and the signature leather dog tag---you’re a Coach woman. Even the little things like the coffee you drink, or the soda you buy are all decided based on the type of brands you appreciate, the brands you trust.

Many times, brands are related to companies but in all actuality, it does not matter if you are an individual or a company, we all need to understand the importance of branding. What makes you “U”nique?

Your brand is who you are. It is what sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. But it is not enough to just have great qualities; its how you communicate and the channels you use to convey your brand. Life and Career Coach Kim Avery identifies some key questions to ask yourself when building your individual brand and the best ways to communicate your individual brand:

Who am I?

Who am I becoming?

How am I unique?

What do I do superbly well?

What qualities are an integral part of my character?

How can I consistently demonstrate my uniquenss to the working world?

Once you have identified the answers to these questions, how are you going to communicate them? Take some time to REALLY think about what you want to be associated with your name. Once you have identified those answers, you must communicate them.

Verbally - Develop a three point marketing message that is a succinct sound bite, conveying three unique strengths that you can recite confidently and frequently.

Visually - Character counts but image communicates. Pay attention to your appearance. Dress for the position you want to hold.

Memorably - Consider creating and sustaining a "signature" uniquely associated with you. Professional women may choose wearing scarves, a favorite color, or a distinctive piece of jewelry. Men can distinguish themselves with clever ties, monogrammed shirts, or a high-quality briefcase.

Seize every opportunity to articulate your plans and goals. Don’t

just be seen, be consistent.

Earn It! Have confidence in your ability to design the life you want*

By Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, Comcast welcomed

their Emma Bowen interns for their very own Spirit of Comcast. This was an opportunity for the EB interns to hear ideas and advice from Comcast leaders on how to create and perfect one’s decision- making processes through goal setting, research and risk management. The theme for this year’s Spirit of Comcast was ―Good Choices, Smart Risks‖. Maria Arias, Executive Director of Diversity and Inclusion outlined a blueprint for success centered on personal strategizing; not just working hard, but acquiring a set of values and principles to help you reach your ultimate goals.

―We all have some idea of what we want to do but it is not a bad idea to explore different aspects of your field of interest to make sure that’s what you really want to do,‖ Arias said. ―In a perfect world, if we could all have a career doing what we loved, it wouldn’t be called work. Blend what you like and what comes naturally to you.‖

Arias also encouraged the EB interns to absorb everything we can and work with a range of people in a different expertise. We can become indispensible, she encouraged, by learning a little bit of everything without over stepping your boundaries. Sometimes it’s better to take the road less traveled. Arias reminded the interns that high risks equal high rewards and you will hear this over and over again, but volunteer for opportunities---not just within your comfort zone. Work hard so you can play hard. Life can’t be all about work without time for the things that bring joy to your life. Arias offered interns this ponder point and these guiding principles as we continue on our path to success. What would you dare do if you knew you would not fail?

Professionally Personally

Identify standards of excellence in work ethic and product

Identify work-life balance

Maintain broad based skill set vs. narrow area of expertise

Reflect, plan and adjust

Pursue significant and highly visible work

Become financially savvy

Exposure: high risk, high profile

Take care of yourself

Mobility: be prepared to adjust to changes in the economy and environment.

HAVE FUN!

Intern Spotlight A look into another intern’s experience

No Knowing Where You’ll End Up Garrett Albanesius, Enterprise Project Management Office

Face it, no matter how much we may try to see what’s

coming, we can’t. Circumstances are unpredictable and we’re not always prepared for what’s to come. The most important day of your life could be tomorrow. Or maybe it was yesterday. My point is life is unpredictable so don’t limit yourself.

We may be blind-sided to opportunities all around us by what we think will or won’t be beneficial to our career path. In college, we’re molded to fit our ―intended‖ careers and conditioned to think of our professional path as a narrow road. But in my opinion, it’s okay—no, recommended—to walk on the grass once in a while. And this, my friends, is exactly the purpose of an internship.

Joining Comcast in early May, I didn’t know what to expect, or even what I wanted to expect. I had a general idea of my interests, and I only hoped that my internship would enhance my understanding of my own professional strengths. But in the real world, experience is experience.

Even if a certain position doesn’t seem to lead to our ―dream job,‖ it doesn’t mean it can’t open a door for an equally incredible job. I mean, you may not walk out of Comcast at the end of the summer with a Ph.D. or a top 10 song on iTunes featuring Nicki Minaj, but no matter the nature of your work, you’ll leave with a better understanding of yourself, your interests, and a few new personal connections.

You see, the story repeats itself in the stories of countless celebrities: Reese Witherspoon leaving Harvard to be an actress (ironically playing a Harvard student); Anchor Brian Williams transitioning from a lobbyist to one of the most recognizable faces in news (saved him years of living off Spaghetti-O’s); J.K. Rowling as a secretary-turned-millionaire author because of a sudden inspiration at a bar in Scotland (I guess Harry was a drinker). My point is not that if you make a drastic life change, you’ll be a multi-millionaire celebrity—but rather that closing ourselves to opportunities, no matter how irrelevant they may seem to us in the moment, only limits our scope of possibilities.

As someone once said—or maybe I just made this up, I don’t know—―Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try‖. And that’s precisely what we should be using our internships at Comcast for: experimenting, testing the waters, exploring new fields. Of course, it’s not productive to walk blindly through the night; we need some idea of where we’re going and where to direct our energy. But that’s not to say that direction can’t change.

Despite what you may imagine yourself doing in five, ten, thirty years, be open to new opportunities that present themselves at Comcast and any future workplace. You never know who you’ll meet or where you’ll end up. But if you do end up going on tour with Nicki, I’d appreciate two tickets.

Social Media: The Silent Killer? It takes 20 years to build your reputation and only five

minutes to ruin it. By Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

Have you ever Googled your name? Are you happy

with the result you get back? Well if you’re not, then neither is that employer for that job that you have been counting on. If your goal is to build your individual brand and making a good name for yourself online is a priority, it's time to take a proactive approach to getting your name out there the way you want.

We all know that Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are great networking tools both as a part of everyday life and as a part of your success or failure during your job search. However, you should know the warning label when it comes to social media: Posting inappropriate photographs, complaining about your current job, coworkers and/or boss, posting conflicting work experience with your resume, posting status updates that make you look anything but professional and letting it all hang out could result in ways you can get fired -- or not hired

Aljolynn Sperber, account executive and social media manager at Maven Public Relations suggest six tips to avoid social media overkill and manage your online presence effectively: 1. Add to the conversation Use LinkedIn to post your résumé online; contribute to industry- and occupation-specific discussions. 2. Have more than one account Have two social media accounts. one that is geared toward your desired industry so employers can see that you're attempting to be active and another one for personal use. 3. Score face time Use online resources to get face-to-face or voice-to-voice with another person. Each of us is most memorable and most influential in person. 4. Just say no If your social media profiles are protected and a potential employer requests to follow you, don't feel obligated to accept, That's what your other 'professional' account is for. 5. Stay positive Don't badmouth any of the companies that you're applying to, especially if you feel the interview didn't go well.

Intern Spotlight A look into another intern’s experience

Do the Right Thing Rich Samartino, Quality Assurance

I am finishing up a five month internship here at

Comcast, and if I can offer one piece of advice it is this: do the right thing. As in, do your job the right way.

I was hired as a quality assurance intern and given a seemingly simple job: call into an interactive voice system (i.e. what Comcast customers hear when they dial 1-800-COMCAST) and make sure it works correctly. My responsibility was to make sure prompts played according to specifications, credit card and check payments were accepted, and callers’ appointments were recited back accurately, along with checking various other capabilities of the phone system.

Though the job seemed straightforward and even a little boring at first, I soon realized that there was a right way and a wrong way to do the job. For instance, how should I let developers know about issues I find? Enter it into our online bug tracking system, I was told. Is there a specific format I should use when entering the bug? I asked. No, there is no standard bug format, was the reply. The right course of action here was to ask developers how they would like a bug description to look, make a bug template draft, review it with my project managers, document the new format on our wiki, and go over the new format with the rest of the team.

And that’s exactly what I did. Today, our team for the most part uses a bug template that I helped define. But to establish a standard bug description, I had to overcome a lot: laziness (it took time and effort), shyness (I hadn’t talked to most of the people on my team yet), intimidation (each of my teammates has at least 5 years of work experience on me, and usually more), and fear (of making mistakes).

I learned that those barriers faded away once I started focusing only on doing my job the right way. I found out that not being lazy is much more interesting than being lazy, my teammates were friendly when I approached them with questions and happy to help fill in my knowledge gaps, and that mistakes should not be feared but dealt with as they occur. Most importantly, I realized that what I wanted to get out of my internship with Comcast (making money, meeting people who can help me in my career, hopefully getting a full time job offer) ended up coming to me naturally as part of doing my job the right way.

So my message to other interns is this: do your job the right way, and the rest will take care of itself.

Pay It Forward You may only be one person in this world, but to one

person at one time, you are the world. By Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

Over the past two weeks, we have heard the importance

of identifying mentors and surrounding yourself with a network of individuals who potentially have your best interest at heart. We have been juggling answers to what your mentor can do for you while you are at Comcast. What do you do with all the advice and constructive feedback? One of the most selfish things you can do is to hoard all the lessons you learn. You never know how your opportunity can be someone else’s blessing.

Last year I had the pleasure of interning with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. My first week, while working on Capitol Hill in the Office of Congressman Chaka Fattah, I attended receptions, seminars and did so much networking that I lost count of how many times I introduced myself. But it was one introduction in particular that meant the world to me.

As part of the internship, my cohorts and I had to develop and implement a community service initiative in Washington, DC. We chose to host a conference over the course of four consecutive weeks at a DC middle school with the overall goal of encouraging and informing students about the importance of being civically engaged.

I remember praying that I would be an inspiration---and that the students even liked me long enough to listen to me. When we walked in the room on the first day of the conference the students looked as anxious as we did. They smiled and said, “Are you all doctors and lawyers or something?”

I was flattered that the students thought so highly of a group of 15 interns who they had just met. After a circle of introductions and proof that we were actually college students, the middle school students were convinced that we could be doctors and lawyers one day.

We spent the next couple of weeks teaching them about Black History, etiquette and why now is better than later. I was uplifted because the students felt comfortable sharing some of their reality with me. The look in those middle school students eyes the day I walked into that classroom, really took the edge off. I wanted more than anything to share everything that I had been taught to these future leaders. Here I was hoping that I inspired them, when they inspired me.

As you continue to build your relationship with your mentors, think about that feeling you got when you introduced yourself to the very person that you knew could change your

life…be that person for someone else.

Maintaining Focus William Tindal, Human Resources

At sixteen your mind does not focus on the future; at

least mine didn’t when I was afforded this internship through the Philadelphia’s Youth Network WorkReady Program. Being that I had never worked anywhere before, I had no idea what to expect. I was excited and petrified all at the same time.

The beginning of the internship was a breeze--- or so I thought I found that I was completing assignments well ahead of deadlines so I figured I could come in, do all of my work and relax for the remainder of the day. It became a habit until my boss realized that the more I completed, the more responsibilities and projects she could give me.

I began to realize that the more I worked, the less focused I was. I was comfortable with my routine of knocking out assignments and relaxing; rushing through each project without looking to see if I had done it correctly and still feeling a sense of accomplishment because all that mattered to me was that the work was done.

But soon enough reality stepped in. I noticed that my boss had a master plan the whole time. I was being challenged and prepared for the real world. I was learning to not only follow-up, but follow through with assignments. I realized that getting the work done fast doesn’t mean rest and relaxation.

I needed to see my mistakes versus always having them pointed out to me and I needed to understand the value of taking initiative and being prepared for any challenge put in front of me.

I was being viewed as a young man and a contributor instead of a high school kid that was just here for the summer. From meeting Ralph Roberts personally to several features on Team Comcast; I was being noticed for all the right reasons. By the end of the summer program I was invited to stay throughout the school year as a regular intern.

For an hour and a half, I would come to Comcast with a new outlook on life and a sense of self motivation. I continued to push myself to remain focused on school and work. There was a larger sense of accomplishment when I saw projects that I worked on implemented in commercials and other advertisements for Comcast’s many platforms.

I would have not learned these lessons at sixteen had someone not seen the potential I had all along; sometimes we just need a little push and a little encouragement to maintain that focus.

What are you doing for others? ~ Dr. Martin Luther King By Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

& Victoria Vicente, Comcast Business Services

Building upon the mission of Comcast’s community

investment initiative to promote community service, expand digital literacy and build tomorrow’s leaders, Comcast V.I.P. has partnered with the Urban Tree Connection for their first community service initiative.

Urban Tree Connection is a local non-profit

organization whose mission is to assist urban, low-income communities in revitalizing their neighborhoods by transforming abandoned open, green spaces into safe and functional places that inspire and promote positive human interaction. The group achieves their goals through 3 activities offered to community residents: neighborhood based youth & children’s gardening clubs, community based vacant lot reclamation projects, and block-driven streetscape improvement projects. The garden supports itself by selling some of its produce at a farmer’s market in the city. Urban greening projects provide a variety of economic, environmental, and health-related benefits for the community. To start, purchasing local food keeps money within the community and increases revenue for small business owners in the area, potentially increasing the number of jobs. Stimulating businesses will increase employment and assist low income families in affording nutritious food. With rising fuel costs, food costs increase as well since most food is transported from

outside the community. Local gardens will eliminate these extra costs because food suppliers will no longer need to use massive quantities of fossil fuels to process and transport goods. Did you know that the average distance our food travels to get to our plate is approximately 1,490 miles? Additionally, during the processing and transportation the amount of vitamins in our food decreases. In order to ensure maximum nutritional benefits, we must obtain food that has not been irradiated, waxed, preserved, and sprayed with who knows what and is from the closest source possible.

On Thursday, July 21st, the Volunteer Internship Program will be assisting Urban Tree Connection with the maintenance of the Pearl St. Walkway in West Philly. Some activities the group will be doing include weeding, laying down cardboard as a weed barrier, and mulching with wood chips on top of it in areas between the raised beds. They will also be digging in the raised beds in preparation for planting, picking up trash, and sorting for recycling. The Only Expert is the One that’s Wise Enough to Keep on Learning

Jasmine Rushum, External Affairs

Everyone comes to that point when they think they have become an expert in everything. This was me two months ago entering my fifth summer as an Emma Bowen Foundation intern. I wondered what could be left for me to explore.

That all changed, when I attended this year’s Emma Bowen conference in New York City. Each year, two students are selected as Student of the Year. The award recognizes the achievements of an outstanding male and female senior and serves as an incentive to other Foundation students to continue to strive for excellence. I am confident that I fit this description and that this was the summer to show why I deserved to be considered for this award. So I decided to test my limits, like never before. I thought I was the expert, but I learned that there is no expert and limits are a completely different territory. You never know how your limits will be pressed.

In addition to my responsibilities in Comcast’s External Affairs department, the Emma Bowen Conference encouraged me to pursue opportunities outside of my department as well; one being the opportunity to raise money for the Barack Obama campaign as part of the Young Professionals Finance Committee. In total, I raised more than $1,000 and was the youngest person on the committee. With this I learned the true meaning of teamwork, fundraising for a cause, planning and other invaluable skills. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to attend President’s Obama Young Professionals reception and I shook his hand!

My summer would not have turned out this great without the opportunity to participate in these events. Not only have I been the spectator and participant of many wonderful events, but I will be able to implement the skills that I have learned to assist with planning the Comcast portion of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention that will be held in Philadelphia this year.

From the Emma Bowen Foundation’s Conference and the Spirit of Comcast; to the Emma Bowen series, and the awesome intern events hosted by Comcast; I have been able to experience my passion of event planning from a different perspective. Comcast reminds me that just when you think you have surpassed your expectations, it is possible to do it again two times over.

So thoughts of being the expert did not completely go out the window, but I learned to look at being an expert in a more meaningful way. The only expert is the one that’s wise enough to keep on learning. We’re all experts if we keep pushing that limit. I thank Comcast for teaching me that.

Jasmine Rushum is going into her 6th semester at The Pennsylvania State University, majoring in Communications. She is interning under Bret Perkins, Vice President of External Affairs.

Stepping Stone “The goal is not for you to be comfortable, the goal is to add value.”

Payne Brown, VP Strategic Initiatives By Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

On Friday, July 22, 2011, Comcast held their 5th Annual Multicultural Internship Day. The event is an opportunity showcase Comcast’s commitment to diversity in many areas of their business, including the 5 diversity pillars: Governance, Talent (HR), Community Investment, Procurement and Content.

About 60 interns from diverse organizations across

the country assembled at Comcast’s Headquarters to gain

some valuable lessons about the demands of corporate life and

what Comcast is doing to incorporate diversity and inclusion

in their everyday operations.

Participating students of the Multicultural Intern Day

included Asian Pacific Americans Institute for Congressional

Studies (APAICS), OCA, Congressional Black Caucus

Foundation (CBCF), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

(CHCI) and the National Puerto Rican Coalition (NPRC).

Interns heard from a host of Comcast Executives who shared their personal life experiences. The Diversity Panel featured Comcast Executives Martha Soehren, SVP Comcast University, Payne Brown, VP Strategic Initiatives and Roberto Perez, Director of Hispanic Marketing. Each Executive offered interns key advice as they continue to pursue their goals.

One of the key messages that was a major theme was

that opportunities such as this one are stepping stones and great learning experiences. Maybe some have realized that this is not for them while others have discovered their passion. Whatever your lesson, keep these points in mind!

Life is What You Make It! Kylie Miller, Marketing Services

No matter who you are or what you do, life is what you

make it. The choices are yours; which opportunities you seize (or don't) are all up to you. We are in the positions we find ourselves for a reason. The world is now in our hands, and we can decide what to do with it. Let’s make a difference! Having the opportunity to work at Comcast this summer has changed my life. I'm very fortunate to have had this amazing opportunity. I know now that I have the willpower and desire to make my future a successful one. Throughout these two short months as an intern, I have learned more than I have in my two years of college. The value of having this firsthand experience is second to none. Anxious, nervous, and excited, I walked in the doors of Comcast ready to start my summer. That day, many kind employees greeted me and demonstrated that this is where I belong. Each day was full of new and exciting opportunities; I took them all on with confidence, and a willingness to open myself up to learning new things, or stepping out of my comfort zone. I chose a direction and took off with no fear of being right or wrong. I performed each task to the best of my ability and wasn’t afraid to receive feedback, be it constructive criticism or a round of applause. The way you learn, or what you learn, all depend on the way YOU look at it and what YOU make of it. If you say you are going to fail, there’s a strong chance that you will. If you want to succeed, you can, and you will! When you put your mind to a task, the possibilities are endless. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity. My experience at Comcast taught me that it was up to ME, and only me, to overcome my fears and do anything and everything I could ever imagine! While Comcast will no longer be my second home at the conclusion of my internship, I will carry forever the knowledge and experiences I've gained here.

This is only the beginning… “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

By: Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications

So you’ve spent these past months loving your

internship experience or realizing that maybe this is not for you. Either way, this was a learning experience. You did all this grinding and hustling to prepare you for the internship and now it’s time to say goodbye. You ask yourself, what next? Here are a few tips to take with you to before your last day:

Show gratitude

Tie up loose ends

Listen to feedback

Collect information and stay in touch

Talk to others about your future

Ask for references/letters of recommendation

Leave on good terms

Don’t walk away from this opportunity empty handed. If all you can say about your summer is that you interned at Comcast, then something is wrong! You should be able to talk about what you learned, who you met and how this experience is going to help you moving forward. Before your managers do an evaluation of your performance, take the time to do an evaluation of yourself…and be honest with yourself; your mangers sure will! Many of you are in the middle of important projects and may not be able to finish them before your last day. But don’t just walk away from your commitment to the project. Map out a plan for your manager so that he/she is aware of where you are at and what steps need to be taken after you are gone. For those of you who will be staying with Comcast during the semester, use your extended time to explore new opportunities and demonstrate to your manager that you are not the same person that walked into their department on May 23, 2011. Remember that internships are extended interviews and if you’re still here, show them why you should stay! One of the most important things is to make sure your boss has a copy of all the projects you worked on throughout the summer. What good is all that research if they can’t use it when you’re gone. Just be sure to end your internship on a positive note and don’t burn your bridges. You’ve seen first had how small the world is and you never know if/when you will run back

into these people.

Greatness Armand J. Hodge, Government Affairs

“Money doesn’t equal Greatness, Cribs don’t equal

Greatness, Diamonds don’t equal Greatness, Fame doesn’t equal Greatness…..Only Greatness equals Greatness, Only Greatness Equals Greatness, Only Greatness equals Greatness……John Thompson Sr. I repeat this to myself every morning when I wake up and right before I walk into my office here at Comcast every morning. Interning here at Comcast this summer has shown me that greatness is what you make it. As an intern for a notorious company you should carry yourself with some type of greatness. If you’re working on a certain assignment planning for an event, writing an important memo, or even assisting your boss, greatness should be the end result. Before I came to Comcast this summer I did not know what the phrase greatness equals greatness meant exactly. Surely I tried to do everything I did as best as I could, but that phrase meant something else to me. My ears took it as when you put greatness into your work and every task you do, greatness will come back to you. For example every task, every memo, every project I completed I put greatness into it. Whether it was putting press

clips together, help planning dinners and meetings, or even

helping plan and organize the 15th anniversary MSNBC Party. Who would have thought greatness would have come back to me.

Attending a FCBA (Federal Communications Bar Association) luncheon, having lunch with D’Arcy Rudnay; Senior VP of Corporate Communications, Meeting David Cohen; Executive VP of Comcast Corporation, networking at the Washington Wizards Draft Party, Meeting VP’s of other companies and organizations and Traveling to Comcast Headquarters in Philly are just a few examples of how Greatness came back to me. But I wasn’t putting greatness into my work expecting something in return.

You should never put greatness into your work to expect greater things in return. You should do it because it will me make you an overall better person. If greatness does come back to you, embrace it and take it as blessing that can benefit your life or career. That’s how I’ve accepted this intern ship this summer at Comcast. When a blessing and opportunity like this comes into your life, you should take advantage of everything that comes with it. Interning here at Comcast this summer has helped me gain a better understanding of the corporate world, how to network with people, a better understanding of the media and government affairs, but most all to realize the amount of Greatness I have inside myself. I thank Comcast for showing me that.

2 Comcast VIP: Recap

Farewell! Greetings,

Since many of you are leaving after this week, I thought

I would say my “goodbyes” in this issue.

I cannot believe the summer went by so quickly! This

is my fifth summer running the intern program, and I must say

this one went by the fastest. This is probably due to the fact that

this was such a great group of interns. We had some fantastic

events this year ranging from the Networking & Resume

Building Workshop to Multicultural Intern Day to the great VIP

community service events. None will top the fun of the bowling

event! I hope you all enjoyed the events Sylvia and I planned this

summer, and please give us feedback as I look to continue to

improve the intern program summer after summer. You can

also provide feedback in the exit interview I’ll be emailing out as

your end date approaches. In addition, some of you were able to

leave a piece of your work behind, either by posting an article on

TeamComcast or having your video blog end up on

ComcastVoices.com. It’s not too late, as we’ll be posting all

Intern Spotlights from the newsletters on TeamComcast. If you’d

like to write an article about your summer, please send it to me

by the end of August. The more intern testimonials, the better!

I hope you learned something while you were here at

Comcast. The cable and media industry is fast-paced and ever

changing. This makes it one of the most exciting places to work!

I hope you’ve found Comcast to be this way, and please think of

us as a future employer of choice. (I had to get my HR speech in

there somehow.)

With that being said, I hope that you all keep in touch.

We love to have interns return summer after summer! Please

keep me updated with what you are doing in school and where

you end up with a job or internship for next summer. I’d love to

hear from you. Also, please connect with me on LinkedIn!

Best of luck in all your future endeavors!

Nicole

Intern Spotlight It Must Be Done

Haniyyah Sharpe, Corporate Communications "I cannot tell the truth about anything unless I confess being a student,

growing and learning something new every day. The more I learn, the clearer my view of the world becomes."~ Sonia Sanchez, Poet

We have this habit of making plans and setting goals with the intention of accomplishment and long-term benefits. We set our mind to what it is we want to achieve and more often than not, once we set our mind to something, there is a drive and sense of determination that will not allow anything or anyone to stand in the way. But plans are made to be broken.

Over this past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the 36th Annual National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention and like many conventioneers, I had plans. This was my first convention so I had every intention of going hard or going home. I had pinpointed who I wanted to talk to, and what I wanted to walk away with at the end of this convention…well none of that happened.

As a member of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ), the founding chapter of NABJ, I was working instead of networking. I was doing my part to make sure that all who came to Philadelphia to network, party and fellowship, felt like they were back home where it all started. Honestly, I was a little disappointed because I felt like I was being cheated out of an opportunity to take advantage of the endless amount of resources that were available.

That was until I was working backstage at the PABJ Philly Love Party and I was introduced to Sonia Sanchez. She held my hand and hugged me and told me to keep to, “Keep up the good work my sista!” Just her presence alone was enough for me even if she never said two words to me.

I never think that my hard work is all for nothing because I know that even when my plans don’t go accordingly, there is a blueprint that has already been mapped out that I don’t even know about.

I never planned to still be pursuing my undergraduate degree at 27 years-old, all while managing two internships, a part-time job, being a mother to my beautiful four-year old son, a soon-to-be wife and still find time to further my education and advance my career. I also know that had my plans after high school gone accordingly, I would not be the person I am today.

We all have circumstances in life that change our plans for better or for worse. However, circumstances can be modified; they are just something to consider when determining a course of action but they are not the be all and end all.

Self motivation is essential in life and you have to do more than want them, you have to be hungry. People constantly say to me, “You have a lot going on, how do you do it?” My answer is simple, it must be done.

Comcast VIP hosted the “Brand Yourself for the Career

You Want…Not the Job You Have” on Tuesday, August 2, 2011. Students from People’s Emergency Center Teen Technology Network , an after-school program for West Philadelphia and University City High School students designed to help improve academic performance and develop their use of technology and Project Home’s Comcast Digital Connectors, an innovative initiative that teaches young people digital literacy skills and how to use broadband technologies to benefit their communities filled the 44th

of the Comcast Center to hear from a panel of their peers about the importance of first impressions, attitude and internships. Comcast VIP Chair, Sean Valentine, shared with the students about one’s attitude when performing tasks. He reminded students that most times you will be given assignments that are not ideal to you but your attitude and the way you complete the task says a lot about your work ethic. Khadija Bingham, a recent high school graduate and Emma Bowen Intern in Comcast’s Community Investment Department resonated with the students on a more personal level as she described transitioning immediately from high school to college, all the while balancing her internship. She admitted that it was hard but that dedication and supportive networks ease the stress of the transition. William Tindal, who began interning at Comcast when he was sixteen, informed the students without hesitation that they have to be serious. He recalls how his transition was a bit difficult because he was only sixteen and he was not prepared for such a wakeup call. When asked what he liked most about the workshop, Vernon Jordan III, who is going into his senior year at_______ said, “Considering everyone is so young and fresh into their internships, that made it even better, more relatable as a senior in high school.” When Comcast VIP was developed in the summer of 2010, their goal was to support Comcast’s continued focus of promoting community service, expanding digital literacy and building tomorrow’s leaders. The room was filled with living testimonies and future leaders.

“ If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” ~John Quincy
