SOCIAL NETWORKINGIS NOT SOCIAL INTERACTIONBy CPT William G Thompson, LCSW, BCD, 568th MCGA BHO

I love Facebook, Kakao, Messenger and Skype. I was stationed in Korea at Camp Casey thirteen years ago and was lucky if I could just talk to someone online, much less see them. Now I am able to have great communication with home, friends and whomever I want back in the states. Communication is so much more effective now than it was 13 years ago. With all the advances in technology, we are able to keep up with our loved ones back home instantly, but that is a two-edged sword. Many do not consider the negative side. Along with being able to see and hear things that we may have missed due to advances in technology, we can also hear about all the negative things going on as they happen rather than after the fact. We can, by proxy, experience/live through the stressors of home life while it’s happening but still not be able to do anything about most of it. This can, if not handled correctly, lead to feelings of helplessness. If these feelings happen too often, it can contribute to what is called “learned” helplessness. This can contribute to increased stress reactions by decreasing mission/work effectiveness and physical and mental health. One needs to develop a local network of friends/peers that they can talk to in real life to help with these situations.

While there is research to support how social networking helps shy, introverted or socially awkward individuals make a connection with others, there is overwhelming research that shows the negative effects of too much time on social networking. This includes but is not limited to, addictive behaviors, social isolation and narcissistic antisocial behavior. Excessive use of social media was also found to be strongly linked to underachievement at school and work. If you add a mental health diagnosis to this, research shows that excessive use of social networking can actually increase the negative symptoms of the mental illness. All this does not even begin to approach the mega problem of online bullying, which will not be discussed in this article.

Researchers from the University of Michigan found that Facebook usage over an extended period of time can also cause a change to one’s mental status. For those of you that have taken a psychology 101 class, social networking is

an excellent example of positive and negative reinforcement. Every time someone likes, shares and/or responds to a post, it reinforces the person’s desire to post similar things. If one repeatedly exposes him or herself to negative posts, (e.g. posts about poor coping skills, life miseries and basically someone who only/mostly focuses on negative things) that will cause a change in the poster’s own mental wellbeing. The opposite can also be done. If one exposes him or herself to positive posts, feedback and influence, it can contribute to improving one’s overall mental wellbeing. Like the old saying goes, “you are known by the company you keep” or “birds of a feather…”

Finding people, real live people, that you can see face to face to talk to about your interest(s) may be few and far between. You will need to step out of your comfort zone and find new topics/ways to interact with people - to have real, live contact with people. For lack of a better example, people have a basic desire to belong to a herd or pack and without a sense of connection to a herd/pack/group, it is easier to fall into a negative state of mind. I encourage you to break away from the computers, iPad, smart phones and electronic devices to look up and make a connection with others. This may mean that you have to step out of your comfort zone and get involved in activities that you may not normally do back home, like volunteer at chapels on post, with one of the schools, at ACS or teach English to the nationals who are looking for it.

While I enjoy being able to connect with family, loved ones and friends back home via social networking, I cannot depend on that for my own mental well-being. I have to have SOCIAL INTERACTION as well. Yes, social networking can be a good thing but be careful that you do not fall into the trap of believing social networking can replace live social interaction. Get out, get real and get living!

Brunching on the weekend, to me is what winning $5000 (tax free) might be to some others. ABSOLUTELY FANTAS-MICAL (fantastic+magical). Brunch is, without a doubt, one of the most awesome meals to have come about, for those of us who enjoy a little sleep-in, without having to miss out on some yummy food and a little adventure.

Now I love a naughty breakfast now and then; however as the weather gets colder, my cravings for healthier food becomes higher and more urgent - you know… before I turn into a hibernating bear.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I hopped into the car, turned on our GPS and ventured out towards Pangyo - a relatively new town surrounding Seoul - approximately a 45-minute drive away from Camp Humphreys, and ended up at Avenue France.

The LowdownAvenue France is one of Korea’s newest ideas, a ‘street mall’ that features premium dining restaurants and boutiques, located south of Seoul, for those seeking ‘hip’ international flavors, without having to head into Itaewon or Garosu-gil in Gangnam, completely avoiding the pit of Seoul’s traffic. Usually frequented by nearby residents, families and young couples, Avenue France is a 200 meter strip mall, designed with a Parisian theme and SoHo-chic environment.

Although home to one or two French establishments, not all things here are French. There is a fabulous variety of coffee shops, dessert and chocolate boutiques, Tartine – a bakery and tart specialist, Italian restaurants, REAL Chinese food (not American or Korean Chinese food), cutesy designer home décor stores, high end shoe shops, soul food, Korean food, western favorites, a VIPS steak buffet restaurant, California Pizza Kitchen, New York Burgers, gourmet sandwiches, high end and cheap eats, Avenue France has it all.

We only took one stomach with us this last time, however, for the next time, a few restaurants I plan on visiting are ‘Dr. Robbins’ organic salad and soup restaurant, the GastroPub American dining restaurant, The Stone Pot Kitchen, Butcher’s Cut Bar & Grill, Tartine Bakery and Tarts, and, and, okay - I just want to go everywhere.

Where We AteWe brunched with old friends this particular visit and our foodie destination was Gye Jul Bap Sang (계절밥상) a Korean buffet restaurant.

Directly translated, the restaurant name means, ‘Seasonal Food’ and the restaurant delivers just that. Here you are given two hours to help yourself to a buffet of fresh, farm-to-table Korean fare that is made at live food stations (the chefs are behind the counters).

Korean food favorites such as bulgogi, Korean fried chicken, kimchi fried rice, spicy rice cakes, soondae- a stuffed blood sausage, slow cooked soups and porridges

52

Page 53: Humphreys Happenings - December 2014

can all be found. What takes this buffet to the next level and gives it the X factor, is the DIY bibimbap station, a salad bar that includes some amped-up gourmet salads and toppings, sweet cinnamon sugar stuffed ho dduk cakes made fresh, a shaved ice dessert corner, an espresso coffee machine by ‘A Twosome Place’ to savor in your own coffee creations, ice creams, fruit and - how could I forget? - the attached organic store in front of the restaurant has seasonal favorites to purchase and take home with you.

The flavor of the food was not that of food that has been laying around all day; it was quality, flavorful and of a higher caliber. If you have a special occasion coming up and/or enjoy a good buffet now and then, then this one is a definite-must-try!

Priced at KRW 22,900 per person, we left happy, hearty and very full. We walked around and browsed the surrounding stores, then headed back home.

TOP TIPS1. There is a queue for most of the

restaurants during weekend service, so get there early-ish. Otherwise, expect a short wait time.

2. Don’t forget to take your carpark ticket with you and get a voucher for free parking after paying for your meal

3. Don’t plan on driving? Take the Seoul Metro and navigate yourself to Pangyo Station; Avenue France is a short cab ride from there.

4. Do not be deterred by the Korean websites, everywhere at France Avenue has an English menu and is very foreigner-friendly!

Gyeongsang-do is located in the southeast corner of the peninsula,

surrounding Busan and Ulsan. The region is very warm, as cold air from the east is blocked by the Taebaek Mountains

running along the East Sea and cold air from the north and west is blocked by

the Sobaek Mountains. The fertile soil in the surrounding area provides for plenty

of food, too.

Gyeongsang-do Food Gyeongsang-do is an area that maintains

a strong tradition of noble class culture and inherits its unique food tradition

of setting the table and preparing food for ancestral ceremonial worship.

The region’s unique cuisine is made possible by the combination of sun,

wind and clouds and the skillful hands of indigenous chefs.

Daegejjim (대게찜): rice steamed in bamboo

Gyeongsang-do’s Yeongdeok-gun is known for its quality and quantity of

daege, or king crab. The region provides a suitable environment in which the

daege can live. Daege tastes best when it is steamed, without any additional

sauces or condiments. Steaming the crab in a big pot for a specific period of time, based on weight, is the only preparation

method required. Daegejjim

Gyeongsang-do

54

Page 55: Humphreys Happenings - December 2014

Yukhoe bibimbap (육회비빔밥): combines assorted vegetables, raw beef and sesame oil on top of steamed rice.

Bibimbap, made with rice, vegetables and other ingredients all mixed together, was

born in this location. Yukhoe bibimbap is a steamed bowl of rice generally served in a

yellow brassware bowl with minced beef, dried octopus, dried mussels, an assortment

of vegetables, herbs, mung bean jelly and seasoned dried seaweed, with red chili

paste and slices of raw beef on top.

Agujjim (아구찜): steamed and seasoned anglerfish with vegetables.

Prior to mid-century, fishermen avoided catching anglerfish because they were

thought to be ugly and grotesque. If they were caught, they were released back into the water. This ugly fish, however, became

a delicacy in Masan some 40 years ago. Anglerfish (아귀 or agwi), and its steamed

version, agwijjim (아구찜) are now standard elements of the Korean table.

Dotori sujebi (도토리 수제비): acorn jelly &

pasta soupDotori sujebi is a pasta soup with acorn jelly.

It was created by people in Goryeong-gun during one of their many attempts to avoid

starvation. The acorns were dried in the sun, soaked in water several times to remove the bitterness and then crushed into a powder. The dish is now regarded as a healthy food

because of its high level of nutrients. It is beloved by many visitors for its taste.

Gwamegi (과메기): half-dried herring

or billfishGwamegi is a Korean half-dried Pacific

herring that dries during winter. Nowadays, the herring is often replaced with the more

prevalent billfish. Usually, a piece of dried fish was wrapped in sea mustard with

sliced garlic and chives and then dipped in soy sauce with vinegar for serving. The

condiments and vegetables served with the fish help remove the “fishy” smell.
