INTRODUCTION

The word ROADLOC comesfrom ROAD LOCATION.

The ROADLOC system is a"locating" system for the RT~sclassified roads.

ROADLOC is a type of coor-dinate system, just as north, south, east and west are thecoordinates of a geographicalmapping system, or (x,y) are thecoordinates of a graph.

General

Divisionalboundary

In the ROADLOC system every road has -a ROAD NUMBER-a PRESCRmED DIREcrION

56

The Prescribed Directionfor any classified road inyour Division can be foundfrom the Division's ROAD-LOC Unk Summary. Thereare copies in all Works Of-fices and Divisional Offices.

Every road is divided into LINKS.

Each Link has a Link Number. These usually ascend in the Prescribed Directionalong the road.

Each link starts at a CONTROL POINT.

A Control Point (CP) is a well-dermed, durable and important landmark -for examplean intersection with another classified road, or a change from undivided to divided road.

Your ROADLoC LinkSummary tells you theLink Numbers anddescribes the locationof their start ControlPoints for all the clas-sified roads in yourDivision.

Individual CARRIAGEWAYS in each Link are identified by a code.

If the Link is undivided road there is a single Carriageway Code for the Link: AIf the Link is divided ie it has two carriageways there is a separate code foreach carriageway. For the carriageway in which you travel in the PrescribedDirection the Carriageway Code is: BThe other carriageway (on which you travel in the opposite direction) hasthe code: C

How to Read Roadloc

The ROADLOC reference for a point on a classified road is written in the following way:

R[ road no, link no, c'way & version, distance from start CP ]

For example, R[ 1, 120,A2, 0.45 ]

This point is on

road number 1 (Princes Highway)link number 120carriageway A (which means Link 120 is undivided)second version (update or modification of carriageway A on Link 120)0.45 km from the Control Point at the start of Link 120

Another example is R[ 10, 280, B1, 0.85 ]

This ison

road number 10 (Pacific Highway)link number 280carriageway B (link 280 is dual carriageway, and the B carriageway is the one on whichyou travel in the Prescribed Direction.

The ROADLOC Link Summary shows that the Prescribed Direction for the PacificHighway is south to north, so B is the northbound carriageway.)

version 1 (this link-carriageway has not been modified since ROADLOC was introduced)

0.85 km from the start of link 280

Additional Features

Reference Points and Control Points may be specifically indicated in a ROADLOC refer-ence as an optional aid to identification where appropriate. RP or CP may be added afterthe disance from start CP.For example:

R[10,280,A2,0.O,CP]R[10,280,A2,O.2,RP]

ROADLOC not only allows us to describe points along the road but also across the road.

To do this we use either a LANE CODE or an OFFSET CODE.

To descriie which lane a point is in the LANE CODE is used. This code has three parts:

direction of traffic: P = PrescribedDirection ..C = Counter (opposite) Direction

total number of through lanes across carriagewaythroughlanenumberfrom the leftof thecarriagewaywhenviewedfacinginthe Prescribed Direction

)For example P32 -second lane (out of three) from left on the carriageway going in the

Prescribed Direction .

C44 -rightmost lane (when viewed in the Prescribed Direction) on theCounter Direction carriageway

An OFFSET CODE is used to describe where a point is relative to the centreline of the car-riageway.

This has two parts:

the offset code itself. The most commonly used are:

L -left side of carriageway when facing in the Prescribed Direction

R -right side of carriageway

M -on the median strip

the offset distance. This is the distance in metres from the centreline of thecarriageway (not the centre of the road). Offset distance is an optional addition

to the offset code.

Examples of offset codes are

L10 - 10 metres to the left of the carriageway centreline (viewed in the PrescribedDirection)

R2S - 25 metres to the right of the carriageway centreline

The PRECISION STATUS of a ROADWC reference may be specified. This is an estimateof the accuracy or reliability of a stated location.

Precision Status is indicated by:

P (for precision)a distance (in kilometres) from the given reference within which the point should lie

For example P.01means this road location is measured to a precision of + 1-0.01 kilometres(10 metres).

A ROADWC reference which includes an offset and a precision status would be written:

R[ road no, link no, c'way & version, distance from start Cp, (RP/CP), (lane/offset code),(precision status) ]

where round brackets ( ) indicate optional elements.
