Without them, the game would not be the same. They are just as important as the players to ensure successful games are played. Umpires are at the centre of the game and everyone’s attention. Each of their decisions is scrutinized, analysed, and commented on by the audience. That is why the IHF places so much importance on the training, retraining, and support of its protégés. The latest rule changes have not made their jobs easier, since the game is progressively becoming faster and more physical.

That is why they are always accompanied during tournaments by Umpire Managers, who play a key role. Umpire Managers help them prepare prior to the game, but primarily guide them by sharing their experiences using increasingly professional means (video review, mental preparation, etc.). Umpires must now be both physically and mentally tough while managing to show a sufficient level of empathy to successfully instill confidence in the field with the players.

What else? The IHF has recently launched an online project that presents a library of videos explaining hockey rules. This is a joint project of the IHF’s Commission of Arbitration (IHF Umpiring Committee) and the Hockey Rules Board. Its goal: to provide umpires with a collection of videos that specifies the rules, as well as their interpretations.

Story of the day Hockey player rituals On the field, athletes look very strong, tough, and untouchable but what the fans don’t see is what happens behind the scenes. Athletes and their superstitions, it remains an established combination. The superstitions, the tics, and the rituals are usually held in private.

The sports world is full of rituals, some are more eccentric than others. They all aim to produce fortune and succes. Athletes typically use them to relax or just to focus or charge themselves with adrenaline to be ready for the match. As team or individually, one ritual can make or break the belief in a victory. Not only in football or tennis are these rituals common, some of the hockey players also have their own habits. The players of Ireland announced that they keep one minute of silence while they keep their eyes closed before each match. During this minute they come completely to rest and they can fully prepare mentally for the game.Even the Indian team hopes by touching the side line before entering the field to deliver their best performance. Stephanie De Groof, the Belgian defender will only put her shin guards on when she’s already on the field. Kookaburra Jacob Whetton, whether rain, sunshine, or night he always has sunscreen on his face as part of a gameday ritual. Wearing a special sweatband or the application of a special tape to the hockey sticks are common rituals that the players use to get “in the zone”.

Rituals are and will remain a well-kept secret, players prefer to keep them to themselves. But maybe it’s better not to know all the rituals, so that we don’t confuse the players in their preparation for the game.

Our neighbours from across the Moerdijk are the country par excellence in European

hockey and, perhaps, even internationally. The last World Cup organised in Hague, in 2014,

was the best proof of the exceptional excitement surrounding hockey in the Netherlands. It

was in 1891 that Pim Mulier introduced the sport to Holland after having witnessed it during

a meeting in England. Haarlem hosted the first official match of the country. Afterwards

it only took them four years to set up their very own national championship, with their

own set of regulations. It was only in 1926, two years before the Olympic Games were

organised in Amsterdam, that the Dutch federation adapted their rules to those dictated

by the International Hockey Federation. In the Netherlands, the women’s national team

gained a very high status due to their exceptional results on the international scene. The

players are real stars idolized by

the whole country. Olympic and

current world champions (for the

7th time!), the ladies of Oranje

are, quite simply, a formidable

international opponent. They have

just one dream left: to end up on

the top step of the podium for the

third consecutive time in Rio next

August.

• You may have noticed that Ireland isn’t playing with their usual flag. Instead, they have the flag of unified Ireland, which unites the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland which is a part of Great Britain. Players from Northern Ireland can chose to play for Ireland or for England. If they choose England they can also be selected to play with Great Britain. If a player wishes to switch from playing for Ireland to playing for England or vice versa they must abstain from international competition for 3 years. There have been cases such as this between South Africa and the Netherlands and more recently cases between Argentina and Italy. They have to choose based on their heart or follow reason.

Sans eux, le jeu n’aurait pas la même saveur. Ils sont tout aussi importants que les joueurs pour garantir la réussite d’une rencontre. Les arbitres sont au centre du jeu et de toutes les attentions. Toutes leurs décisions sont scrutées, analysées et commentées par les spectateurs. Voilà pourquoi la FIH accorde autant d’importance à la formation, au recyclage et à l’accompagnement de leurs protégés. Les dernières modifications du règlement n’ont pas simplifié leurs tâches puisque le jeu devient, au fil des compétitions, plus rapide et plus physique.

Voilà pourquoi ils sont, toujours, accompagnés durant les tournois par des Umpire Managers au rôle capital. Ceux-ci les aident à se préparer avant les rencontres mais surtout les guident en partageant leurs expériences de manière de plus en plus professionnelle (en ayant recours à la vidéo, à la préparation mentale, etc.). Les arbitres doivent donc, aujourd’hui, être costauds physiquement et mentalement tout en parvenant à se montrer suffisamment empathiques pour réussir à installer un climat de confiance sur le terrain avec les joueurs.

What else? La FIH a récemment lancé, en ligne, une librairie de vidéos des règles du hockey. Un projet commun de la Commission d’Arbitrage de la FIH (FIH Umpiring Committee) et de la Commission des Règles de Hockey (Hockey Rules Board). Son objectif : mettre à disposition des arbitres une collection de vidéos qui précisent les règles ainsi que leurs interprétations.

Story of the dayLes petits rituels du hockey Sur le terrain les athlètes semblent très forts, costauds et inattaquables, mais les supporters ne voient pas ce qui se passe dans les coulisses. Les sportifs et leur superstition, c’est une tradition bien ancrée. Souvent, la superstition, les tics et les rituels ne sont pas toujours étalés au grand jour.

Le monde du sport regorge de rituels, certains plus excentriques que d’autres. Tous ont le même but : forcer le succès. Les athlètes s’en servent généralement pour se calmer ou, au contraire, pour pouvoir commencer le match très concentrés et gonflés à bloc. En équipe ou individuellement, un rituel spécifique peut renforcer ou briser la foi en la victoire. Le football et le tennis ne sont pas les seuls sports où les rituels sont fréquents, certains hockeyeurs ont, eux aussi, leurs propres habitudes. Ainsi les joueurs de l’Irlande ont expliqué qu’ils tenaient une minute de silence en fermant les yeux avant chaque rencontre. Cette minute leur permet de se calmer complètement et de se préparer mentalement au match. De même, dans l’équipe indienne, certains joueurs espèrent pouvoir accomplir leur meilleure performance en touchant la ligne avant de monter sur le terrain. Stephanie De Groof, la défenseuse belge, ne met ses protège-jambes qu’une fois qu’elle se trouve sur le terrain. Quant à Jacob Whetton des Kookaburras, il s’enduit les joues de crème solaire par tous les temps ! Porter un bandeau spécial ou appliquer un tape spécial sur les sticks de hockey sont des rituels très courants, dont les joueurs se servent pour “se mettre dans le match”.

Les rituels sont et restent un secret bien gardé, les joueurs préfèrent ne pas les dévoiler ! En fait, il vaut peut-être mieux ne pas connaître tous les rituels, afin de ne pas troubler les joueurs et de les laisser se préparer en toute tranquillité pour leur match…

Notre voisin d’Outre-Moerdijk est la nation par excellence du hockey en Europe et, peut-être même, dans le monde entier. La dernière Coupe du monde organisée à la Haye, en 2014, en a été la meilleure preuve avec une ferveur populaire exceptionnelle autour de l’événement. C’est en 1891 que Pim Mulier importait la discipline en Hollande après avoir assisté à une rencontre en Angleterre. Haarlem accueillait, de son côté, la première rencontre officielle dans le pays. Et il ne fallait attendre que quatre ans pour assister au premier championnat national mais avec un règlement propre et unique. Ce n’est, en effet, qu’en 1926, deux ans avant les Jeux organisés à Amsterdam, que la fédération hollandaise adaptait ses règles à celles dictées par la FIH. Aux Pays-Bas, l’équipe nationale Dames possède même un statut tout particulier vu ses résultats exceptionnels sur la scène internationale. Ses joueuses sont de véritables stars que les annonceurs s’arrachent. Championnes olympiques et du monde en titre (c’était déjà leur 7e titre !), les Oranje sont tout simplement redoutables au niveau mondial. Et, aujourd’hui, elles n’ont déjà plus qu’un seul rêve : terminer une troisième fois consécutive sur la première marche du podium, à Rio, en août prochain.

• Vous l’avez peut-être déjà remarqué, l’Irlande ne joue pas sous son tricolore habituel, mais sous le drapeau d’Unified Ireland, qui unit la République d’Irlande et l’Irlande du Nord, qui fait partie de la Grande Bretagne. Les joueurs d’Irlande du Nord ont la possibilité de choisir de jouer pour l’Irlande ou l’Angleterre. Dans ce dernier cas, ils ont également la possibilité de jouer pour la Grande-Bretagne. En cas de changement, il faut s’abstenir de compétition internationale pendant 3 ans. D’autres cas se sont présentés précédemment avec l’Afrique du Sud et les Pays-Bas ou plus récemment l’Argentine et l’Italie. Choix du cœur ou de la raison...

Streng en sympathiek!

Zonder hen zou deze sport niet hetzelfde zijn. Ze zijn net zo belangrijk als de spelers zelf om van een geslaagde match te kunnen spreken. De scheidsrechters staan in het midden van het spel en in het middelpunt van de belangstelling. Hun beslissingen worden doorgrond, geanalyseerd en besproken door de toeschouwers. Daarom hecht de FIH zo veel belang aan de opleiding, de bijscholing en de begeleiding van de scheidsrechters. De recente wijzigingen in het reglement hebben er hun taak niet gemakkelijker op gemaakt, want het spel wordt met elke wedstrijd sneller en fysiek zwaarder.

Om die reden krijgen ze tijdens toernooien altijd steun van Umpire Managers, die een cruciale rol spelen. De Umpire Managers begeleiden hen bij de voorbereiding op de wedstrijden. Bovendien delen ze hun ervaringen met de scheidsrechters op een steeds professionelere manier (met videobeelden, mentale voorbereiding enz.). De scheidsrechters moeten dus zowel fysiek als mentaal tegen een stootje kunnen en toch voldoende empathie tonen om een vertrouwensband te creëren met de spelers op het veld.

What else? De FIH heeft onlangs een aantal filmpjes online geplaatst over de regels van het hockey. Dit is een gezamenlijk project van het FIH Umpiring Committee en de Hockey Rules Board. Doel: een reeks filmpjes ter beschikking stellen van de scheidsrechters waarin de regels, en de interpretatie ervan, worden verduidelijkt.

Story of the dayHockey en zijn rituelen Op het veld ogen atleten heel sterk, stoer en onaantastbaar maar wat de supporters niet zien, is wat er achter de schermen afspeelt. Sporters en hun bijgeloof, het is en blijft een gevestigde combinatie. Het bijgeloof, de tics en de rituelen worden meestal binnenskamers gehouden.

De sportwereld zit vol met rituelen, de ene al wat excentrieker dan de andere. Allen hebben als doel om geluk en succes af te dwingen. De atleten gebruiken ze meestal om tot rust te komen of net om heel erg gefocust en opgepept aan de wedstrijd te kunnen beginnen. In team of individueel, dat ene ritueel kan het geloof in een overwinning maken of kraken. Niet enkel in het voetbal of het tennis zijn deze rituelen gebruikelijk, sommige van de hockeyers hebben ook hun eigen gewoonten. Zo maakten de spelers van Ierland bekend dat ze voor elke wedstrijd één minuut stilte houden terwijl ze hun ogen gesloten houden. Tijdens deze minuut komen ze helemaal tot rust en kunnen ze zich volledig mentaal voorbereiden op de wedstrijd. Ook bij het Indiase team hopen sommige spelers door het aanraken van de lijn voor het betreden van het veld hun beste prestatie te leveren. Stephanie De Groof, de Belgische verdedigster doet haar scheenbeschermers pas aan wanneer ze op het veld staat en Jacob Whetton van de Kookaburras smeert altijd, bij alle weersomstandigheden, zonnecrème onder zijn ogen. Ook het dragen van een speciaal zweetbandje of het aanbrengen van een speciale tape aan de hockeysticks zijn veel voorkomende rituelen die de spelers gebruiken om “in the zone” te geraken.

Rituelen zijn en blijven een goed bewaard geheim, spelers houden ze liever voor zichzelf!Eigenlijk is het misschien beter om niet alle rituelen te kennen, zodat we de spelers niet van de wijs brengen en ze zich in alle stilte en rust kunnen voorbereiden op hun wedstrijd…

Onze noorderburen wonen in het hockeyland bij uitstek van Europa en misschien ook

wel van de hele wereld. De wereldbeker van 2014 in Den Haag was daar het beste

bewijs van: tijdens het evenement bleek nog maar eens hoe populair hockey er is. In

1891 bracht Pim Mulier de sport in Nederland onder de aandacht nadat hij in Engeland

een hockeywedstrijd had bijgewoond. In Haarlem vond dan weer de allereerste officiële

wedstrijd van Nederland plaats. Het duurde vervolgens amper vier jaar voor het eerste

nationale kampioenschap – met een eigen reglement – een feit was. Toch stemde de

Nederlandse federatie pas in 1926, twee jaar voor de Olympische Spelen in Amsterdam,

haar regels af op die van de FIH. Dankzij de uitzonderlijke resultaten op internationaal

niveau heeft het Nederlandse damesteam ondertussen een bijzondere status verworven.

De speelsters worden er als echte

sterren op handen gedragen.

Als regerende olympische en

wereldkampioenen (hun zevende

titel al!) zijn de dames van Oranje

de absolute topfavorieten op

wereldniveau. Vandaag de dag

hebben ze dan ook maar één

droom meer: in augustus volgend

jaar voor de derde keer op rij op

het hoogste schavot staan in Rio.

Deze vlag verenigt de Republiek van

Ierland en Noord-Ierland, dat deel

uitmaakt van Groot-Brittannië. Spelers

van Noord-Ierland mogen kiezen of ze

voor Ierland of voor Engeland willen

spelen. Zij die voor Engeland kiezen,

kunnen ook deel uitmaken van de ploeg

van Groot-Brittannië. Indien ze toch

willen veranderen, mogen ze 3 jaar

geen internationale wedstrijden meer

spelen. Dit was recentelijk het geval

met Zuid-Afrika en Nederland en met
