Arterial Probe Data Recommendations - 2013

Likely to have usable probe data (GOOD)

Possibly usable probe data (MIXED)

Unlikely probe data is usable (POOR)

• AADT >40000 &• 2+ lanes &• <= 1 signals per mile• Principal Arterials

(HPMS)• Limited Curb cuts

• AADT >20000 &• 2+ lanes &• <= 2 signals per mile• Minor Arterials

(HPMS) • Should be tested

• Low volume, < 20K AADT or

• >=2 signals per mile• Major Collectors

(HPMS)• Not recommended

22

• Probe data is anticipated to improve in time• Increased probe density and better processing

• As Probe data degrades, delay is underestimated• As probe technology matures, measured delay may increase• Challenged by queuing or cycle failure• Not sensitive to / confused by bi-modal traffic patterns

Arterial Data Quality - 2014

23

• Expectations are running ahead of reality – Probe data works on highest class arterials– Use with caution on mid class and below

• Queuing and cycle failures remain challenging

• Travel time is the measure of choice– Point pair processing is critical– Distribution of travel time also needed– CDF’s tell a concise story

• Facilitates before/after, degradation in time, compare difference facilities, different signal timings

3/25/2015

31

• Trend Maps – Part of the VPP Suite– Interactive & animated– Can be embedded in

agency websites & distributed in press releases

– Help inform motorists about historical travel conditions, such as just before, during, & after major holidays.

– Intent is to inform motorist about expected conditions and allow them to make better departure decisions.

Webcast Summary: Using VPP Suite Trend Maps for Holiday/Event Travel Planning

3/25/2015

32

• The result of a Coalition project, working with NCDOT, VDOT and UMD CATT Lab, to provide an easier way for member agencies to provide travel information.

• Held in December 2014

• 40+ persons from DOTs & MPOs participated

• Participants learned how to use trend maps for travel info notices for holidays & other major events.

• Thanks to the presenters – Kelly Wells (NCDOT), Wenjing Pu (MWCOG), Mena Lockwood (VDOT) & Michael VanDaniker (UMD CATT Lab).

• Project Questions: Kelly Wells, NCDOT, [email protected]

Project Overview

3/25/2015 34

• Determine best practices for collecting & disseminating weather related travel conditions by public agencies focusing on Mid‐Atlantic & Southern Regions. 1. Conducted a workshop with agencies to identify

current practices in these states. (Participating states: PA, MD, VA, NC, SC, TN)

2. Conducted a scan of DOT Travel Info websites to determine the data and format of the road conditions due to winter weather.

Page 35: I-95 Corridor Coalition · I-95 Corridor Coalition Travel Information Services PTC 3/25/2015 1 I-95 Corridor Coalition Travel Information Services PTC Meeting March 25, 2015 For audio,

Workshop Purpose & Questions

3/25/2015 35

Workshop Purpose:• Discuss the current travel info practices for winter weather events in

regions that do not frequently experience severe winter weather including the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions

• Establish basic functional requirements for an ATMS/ATIS system that would be useful for agencies in these regions.

Main Discussion Questions:• How do you collect data on road conditions due to winter weather?• What winter weather road condition information do you provide to

the public?• Looking ahead, what changes might you make to how you collect

and disseminate winter weather related road conditions?

Page 36: I-95 Corridor Coalition · I-95 Corridor Coalition Travel Information Services PTC 3/25/2015 1 I-95 Corridor Coalition Travel Information Services PTC Meeting March 25, 2015 For audio,

Basic Functional Requirements

3/25/2015 36

What should DOTs look for in new ATMS software:

– Frequency of reporting – Road conditions & granularity – providing more than the public

needs but information good for DOT employees– If road condition information is too general the public might lose

something– Standard definitions– Coverage – what about conditions of county and city roads?– How to communicate completion of events– Include all hazards (flooding, debris, etc.)– How should we be using Social Media?

• Continue discuss among agencies as appropriate during future TISPTC & other Coalition program activities

Background FDOT Upper management desire was to remove IVR Thinking was “No bang for the buck” However what we found:

Bi-annual survey and system reports show more than 50% of system users are from IVR

Demographics supported keeping IVR for now Purpose to craft vision of FL 511’s future

How would you respond to these?• Your agency has unlimited funding.• Adding extra capacity is not an issue.• Stakeholders do not hold you accountable.• TSM&O is well understood, accepted, practiced by everybody including

the policy makers.• Plenty of appropriate training opportunities are available.• TSM&O is a very mature facet of transportation here.• You share all noteworthy practices with others around the country.

Problem statement:

Can data typically collected by DOTs (core raw data) be standardized for all states so that consistent outcome performance measures can be developed

– TMCs collect various data elements related to service patrols, message boards etc.
