Robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are now two of

the most exciting fields in science. Some say that the marriage of AI and robotics

will usher in an entirely

new way of life for us on Earth. Others worry that this change is going to be too

dramatic. The great debate over the future of robotics will continue at the World

Conference on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in Barcelona, Spain, on July 26.

While some robots look like mechanical people with

two arms, two legs, and a talking head, most robots look nothing like humans. Robots

are usually controlled

by computers, such as those found in a manufacturing facility. Artificial intelligence refers to

a machine or robot that can learn from its surroundings and adapt to them.

Machines are starting to learn in similar ways to human beings. They are able to receive

signals from their environment, store those signals as vital information,

and modify their behaviors. Both self-driving cars

and robot vacuums use this technology. Cars simultaneously sense their environ-

ment and use electronic maps and traffic data. They know when to stop and go, what

route is the fastest, and what speed is the most energy efficient. The Roomba vacuum

also uses sensors to know when to stop and go, which parts

of the floor are dirtiest, and when cleanliness has been achieved. Additionally, the

Roomba can identify whether it’s vacuuming a hardwood floor or plush carpet and

adjust accordingly.

Do these robots spell the end of work for cabbiesand janitors? Some say that half the

world’s jobs will be done by robots by the middle

of the century. One such robot is “Flippy,” the mechanical burger flipper, which de-

buted at a California burger joint last March. Another is Kiva, a robot designed to

retrieve goods from the vast warehouses of the online seller

from the vast warehouses of the online seller Amazon. Whatever your feelings for ro-

bots, in many ways they are already working among us.

are already working among us.

While riding the bus, my mother noticed a young man, who was holding onto the same pole, staring at her. Eventually, he said,

"Excuse me. This is my stop. "Since she wasn't blocking his way, she was confused. "Well," she said, "go ahead."

"And this is my pole," he said. My mother was completely perplexed until the young man added, "I just bought it at the hardware store to

hold up my shower curtain."

Riddle Me This

What do you call a can opener

that doesn’t work?

You Are What You Eat

In the pioneer days of America, your

kitchen could only stock ingredients

that were at hand depending on

the season. When ingredients were

scarce, cooks got desperate, hence

the development of vinegar pie.

Normally, pies would be made with

fresh fruit or, at least, lemon juice.

Vinegars such as apple cider vinegar

offered a similar fruity tartness.

Similarly, when apples weren’t

available, people mixed crackers and

lemon juice to make a mock-apple

filling. These pies earned the

nickname desperaon pies, for

obvious reasons.

ANSWER !

A CAN’T OPENER

FLOWER OF THE MONTH

Bikini Day, in honor of the inven*on of the skimpy swimsuit by

French designer Louis Reard in 1946. It was named a2er the Bikini

Atoll, where the United States had conducted tests of the atomic

bomb.

Many flowers take their names from their colors,

but the larkspur takes its name from an

animal. The flower’s scien*fic name, delphinium,

is derived from the Greek word delphis,

meaning “dolphin.” As the larkspur begins to bloom,

its petals form graceful arches and

curve in a bo9le-like shape, resembling the

nose of this joyful marine mammal.

The larkspur is also said to reflect the dolphin’s

spirit—a purple larkspur

represen*ng the soaring emo*ons from a first love.

Larkspurs of all colors

are thought to symbolize feelings of lightness, levity,

and an open heart.

The en*re plant is extremely poisonous,

and historically the flower has been

used to drive away unwanted cri9ers,

such as scorpions and poisonous snakes.

Transylvanians take this tradi*on a bit further—

they plant blue larkspurs around the

horse stables to ward off witches.
