We would like to acknowledge the support of the European Commission and in particular its NMP programme for partly funding I3CON project.

Integrated ConstructionBy integrating calculations for construction costs, energy consumption, and maintenance and repair forecasts, the validation of virtual models becomes more exact and profound by considering life-cycle costs.

Industrialised ConstructionOne of the objectives of I3CON is to develop efficient, scalableproduction methods. While automated production processes permit mass customization without price rising, virtual design and simulation establishes an integrated design process on one platform, permitting client, designer, fabricator and user to achieve complex and high installed products. Multi-functionality is the common feature of the following systems, developed in I3CON Project:

Intelligent Construction

Multi functional precastelements (bearing / cooling / heating /

installation)being produced in a

high industrialized process using “front loaded design” and

simulation of behavior of elements to simulate

production and erecting.

A component library (intelligent catalogue of building objects) was conceptualized by I3CON and implemented. Components have different behaviours and modifiable parameters, module interfaces and interaction handles; a design concept is easily produced out of reusable and flexible module components which connect to each other according to certain rules.

Configurable façade panels focused on GRC sandwiches with an external metallic frame which allows any external finishing and thermal properties enhanced by the use of phase change materials (PCMs).

Integration of operable windows featuring electro-chromic glazing units (ECGUs).

Innovative piping for ease of installation and replacement, in conjunction with water saving system

Multi-Services Trunking System; rapid-manufactured prototype for vertical and horizontal distribution of water (cold and hot), air, electricity, etc.

• The I3CON service configuration tool helps to draft customer-specific service bundles out of single service modules in a visual way. This software shows the lifecycle costs of each component including production, maintenance, cleaning, etc. and thus aids their early inclusion in the design phase. In addition, the product-service can be modified facilitating the consideration of different alternatives.

The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployment provides the platform for measuring parameters that greatly influence the performance metrics identified as most important for the users’ comfort.

The Building Operating System (BOS) allows regulation and control of all the systems in response to the information provided by the WSN or other sensors, contributing to create high-performance spaces.

The integration of some of the components and systems developed in I3CON have been done at three levels:

Virtual level: by creating a model where thermal simulations, construction times and life-cycle cost assessment can be carried out.

Prototype level: a Mock-up is being designed for manufacturing applying pre-fabrication concepts and further integration of all the components, which will be tested according to a measurements plan for their validation.

Building level: some systems have already been incorporated in real buildings, namely the WSN and the BOS.
