What a great Christmas Party! All of the plan-ning throughout the year really paid off. Betty did a super job in the planning and coordina-tion of the party; everyone had a great time. The U.H. game couldn’t keep you away. I was very pleased that many of our new members were able to come and have fun with us old timers. The bingo was a success and it seemed that everyone enjoyed collecting the fish mugs. My great en-joyment came when I told everyone to clear their cards; the moaning from all of you brought much delight to me!! Our prizes get better and better each year; due to the generosity of our members and the fish pet stores that always support us. The favors this year were the best. The CD Jim and Karen O’Donnell made of our newsletters from 2004-2009 is most informative. With all that information someone could come up with a great tank for the next An-nual Fish Show. HAS PoliciesThe Board of the Honolulu Aquarium Society has decided to enact the following policies

in effect for the year 2010. This is all an effort to encourage more participation amongst mem-bers to be beneficial to the society. We appreciate the effort that already is shown, however in the interest of having a strong and active society we will be putting in place mandatory participation in the following areas.

The way you can fulfill your obligation to the club is to do one of the following:

- Write an article at least 1 paragraph long. The subject can be anything related to the hobby. It could be a practical tip or something that you do that has had success or has failed. [If assistance is needed, the board will be available for help].

- Help Auction Chairperson with the auction as either a recorder or stage help for at least 2 meetings.

- Help sell raffle tickets for 3 meetings.

- Become committee members on the annual picnic and/or Christmas party.

- Enter a tank in the show.

- Be a member of the show committee and help set up and break down the show.

- Help with the membership and Aloha committee for 3 months.

- Do a program (talk for the club).

- Join the Board for 3 months.

- Donations (monetary, goods, etc.)

There will be consequences if you do not fulfill your obligations to the club. You will lose your privileges for the auction and will not be allowed to bid on items. Obligations may be excused and made up if explained to the board. Participation will be noted in the newsletter and kept track on our participation binder.

There will be sign up sheets for the first three (3) meetings and as a member you will be able to sign up for as many committees as you want. At the end of the third month, the board will assign you to a committee.

Faith, Family, Friends

Best Wishes for 2010

We are always looking for a few good members to join our board; we always need to get fresh ideas to improve our club. I know that many of you would like to participate but just don’t know how. Well, all you need to do is ask me or one of our board members and we will help you with all the information you need. It’s really easy and I am quite sure that you will enjoy yourself!

Our next membership meeting will be at Kuhio Elementary School. Bring some extra cash for the next grow out for our Annual Fish Show. The board decided on the Congo Tetra as our next grow-out fish. The cost will be $3.00 each and the first go around will have a limit so everyone will have a chance to buy some. Any remaining fish will be up for sale. Remember, this category of our fish show is the only category that has a monetary award presented as the prize. This is the only time you will be able to pur-chase the Congo Tetras.

See you all at the next meeting!

Joining the HAS Boardby Alan Teraoka

As I said in my other article about joining HAS, I decided that I’d fulfill my society obliga-tions by joining the Board at their monthly meetings. I’ve been a member of a few organiza-tions in the past and let me tell you, the Board meetings are where everything happens. I like to call the general meetings or monthly meetings the "show" as this is where all the planning "happens" for the general membership. Betty and Wayne have encouraged everyone to become more active in the club. Believe me when I say that this is where it all happens. Yeah, it may not be for everyone but if you have the time this is where you can actually influence the future of our society. If you are not able to attend these meetings, speak up and tell us what you want to hear or learn in our hobby. We will try to accommodate your needs if we can. On that note, we also need members to step-up to the plate and share their knowledge on fish or aquatic plant husbandry. No shame! Just do it and share your knowledge. It doesn’t have to be the "gospel truth" on how to do something but if it works for you then share the experience.

Sometimes we have a lot of fun at these meetings. On one occasion, (actually on many oc-casions) we played a joke on Wayne Steljes. It was a couple of years ago and Wayne’s grow out fish was humongous, I mean it was gigantic. Lance and I concocted this plan to disqualify the grow out contest because of the length of the contest, this was the year that we held the fish show in January. We talked to most of the members attending the meeting except Betty and June. It was hilarious because Betty and June came to Wayne’s defense because of the junior members and their fishes. We pulled off the prank with only a one vote victory and Wayne was totally bummed! I mean talk about sour grapes! Lance and I almost couldn’t contain our-selves, I just wanted to bust out laughing. We finally told him before he went home because we couldn’t let Betty suffer the ride home. Lance and I have since retired from practical jokes after this one, NOT! Anyway, hope to see you at the meeting and the Board meeting.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year By Betty Steljes

On my desk at work I have a fun sign that says, “Dear Santa, I want it all!” And I do have it all, the very best family and wonderful friends. Nothing material can top that. Each year I think about our Christmas party all year long. I want it to be so much fun for everyone and this year was certainly the best ever.

I had fun shopping for the children. I always stress out when it comes to the boys because I never know what to buy; I‛m a lot better when it comes to the girls. Anyway, this year my girl-friend from work (who has boys) helped me and you should have seen us at the store so excited about what we were finding. I know by the happy faces that the toys were a success.

The Bingo game worked this year – YES! I think everyone enjoyed seeing their name and it was a way of learning our member‛s last name also. I think I may do it that way next year.

I‛m always looking out for favors so if you see anything that we could use and it‛s the right price please let me know. Donna Nakano made all those candy match book favors everyone received. Thank you so much Donna for all your hard work. Jim & Karen O‛Donnell produced that CD of our newsletters from 2004 through 2009 and included information about our club and links to various sites. Many hours of work went into completing that CD. Jim asked if he could do that for our members‛ months before Christmas. What a great gift for each of us. Alan Teraoka put the CD label and insert together. Alan spent many hours designing both. It‛s great when members work together for the greater good. Every year our members volunteer or contribute in some way to make our Christmas party fun.

I want to thank the following special people:* Alan Teraoka & Irene Sakimoto – music as we entered* June Urada, Nicholas Olinski & Maxine Cole – the smiling faces you saw as you checked in* Sandy Hee – Blessing us and the food before dinner* Robert Lau – a video of the pictures he takes throughout the year of our various activities* Jim & Karen O‛Donnell – Compiled 2004 to 2009 Newsletters into a CD* Alan Teraoka – Designing CD label and insert* Donna & Larry Nakano – Donna made all the matchbook Best Fishes favors* Eric Hayashi – picking up donations, helping Wayne & I haul everything up to TreeTops and volunteering to do anything needed* Baron Fukata, Mitchell Wong, Scott Chingon, Eric Hayashi, Lance Pang, Nicholas Olinski, & Maxine Cole for helping with the setup* Lance Pang – Handling all the monies and paying the bills* Philip Lee & Scott Chingon – helping with the fish pond for the kids* Eric Hayashi, Lance Pang, Scot Seo & Jesse Merris for handing out the door prizes* Echavaria Family & especially Leah-Jean who sang for us and led us in singing Christmas carols* Denise Araki– Working with me on the newsletters & Christmas invitations for the vendors* Wayne – Helping me get everything ready, being a wonderful MC and for his patience

The vendors were awesome this year. They contributed so many items to help make our evening wonderful. Please see what was donated by whom and thank the managers when you see them at the stores. Everyone went home with at least a couple of prizes.

New members and old – get involved – it‛s a lot more fun when you give back and make this club work. As Wayne always says “it‛s through all of us that this club will continue to be successful.”

Mark your calendars – next Christmas party – Saturday, December 4, 2010.

Wayne and I want to wish each of you a wonderful 2010. May all your hopes and dreams be ful-filled.
