The Nagpur bench of Bom-bay High Court on Thurs-day dismissed a PIL seekingdeclaration of funds re-ceived by the Prime Minis-ter’s Citizens Assistanceand Relief in EmergencySituation (PM CARES), acharitable trust created bythe Union governmentamid the COVID-19 pan-demic.

A division bench of Jus-tices Sunil Shukre and AnilKilor noted that the under-lying objective of publicdisclosure of funds is to en-sure their proper utilisa-tion.

“This objective can beseen to be more than ful-filled in the present case byregistration of the fund as acharitable trust and ap-pointment of a CharteredAccountant firm as auditorwho would be bound to bal-ance and audit accounts ofthe fund,” the court said.

All reliefs sought in theplea are refused, the courtsaid while dismissing thepublic interest litigation

Congress leader Kapil Sibal, akey member of ‘Group of 23’that has sought an urgent organ-isational overhaul, on Thursdaysaid it was “unfortunate” thatthe party was targetting its ownmember Jitin Prasada when itneeded to target the ruling BJPwith “surgical strikes”.

Prasada, a former union min-ister, was also among the signa-tories to the letter that sought anactive and full-time party presi-dent among other changes. He isalso a special invitee to the Con-gress Working Committee, where the 23 letter writers weredissed on Monday on various is-sues concerning their communi-cation including its timing.

“Unfortunate that Jitin Prasa-da is being officially targeted inUP. Congress needs to target theBJP with surgical strikes in-stead of wasting its energy by

targeting its own,” Sibal said onTwitter.

Reacting to it, another Con-gress leader, Manish Tewari whowas also a signatory to the letter, tweeted a single word “Pre-scient”.

While Prasada did not makeany comment himself, heretweeted the posts of Sibal andTewari.

BJP cannot accept Tipu Sultan as noble ruler, distances from MLC’s statement AGENCIESBengaluru

Distancing itself from the newly nomi-nated party MLC A H Vishwanath’scomments hailing controversial 18thcentury Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan, theBJP’s Karnataka unit on Thursdaytermed it as personal, made in his indi-vidual capacity.

It also clarified that the BJP cannotand will not accept Tipu Sultan as a no-ble ruler. “The remarks of Vishwanath,MLC, on Tipu Sultan are his personal(comments), made in his individual ca-pacity.

The BJP distances from these re-marks,” party spokesperson GaneshKarnik said in a statement.

The BJP is of the unanimous andconsidered view that Tipu Sultan is a“fanatic bigot” and his rule was “tyran-nical” he said.

History bears testimony that he killedthousands of Hindus in Kodagu districtand Christians in Mangaluru in his bidto establish Islamic rule, the BJP leadersaid. “Tipu Sultan was zealous in con-verting people by the threat ofsword.Tipu Sultan had made Persian asthe official language of his kingdomand hence he was against Kannada.

BJP cannot and will not accept TipuSultan as a noble ruler,” he added. In astatement contrary to the party’s stand,Vishwanath on Wednesday had hailedTipu as a “son of this soil” who foughtagainst the British for freedom. When

pointed out that his party BJP has a dif-ferent view on Tipu, the MLC had saidit was a different matter. “Tipu Sultandoes not belong to any party or caste orreligion. Tipu Sultan is the son of thissoil, so he should not be belittled, bylimiting him to any religion.” On con-troversy relating to plans to remove les-sons on the ruler from school text-books, he had said, that was not thecase, and “we have to read about TipuSultan.” Soon after coming to power inKarnataka, the BJP government hadscrapped the birth anniversary cele-brations of Tipu Sultan, an annual gov-ernment event the party had been op-posing since 2015 when it was launchedduring the Congress rule led by Sid-daramaiah.
