F or close to a decade,Sensodyne has beenpitched as a special

toothpaste for sensitive teeth.One that gets inside people’shomes, not because it offers afresh feel or, kills bad breath,but via a doctor’s recommen-dation. A white-coat clad andstethoscope wielding model hasbeen its face, almost ever sinceits launch in 2011. Now in a new,digital-first campaign, GSKConsumer is recasting its tooth-paste in a new mould, askingpeople to choose the brand forthe love of good food above allelse. The objective is to makethe brand more relatable, thecompany said, but will thismean losing the distinctivenature of its appeal?

GSK Consumer Healthcare’soral care brand Sensodyne tack-les Dentine Hyper Sensitivity(DHS), a condition about whichthe company has sought to buildawareness and sensitivity. Itsefforts have had the brand gainalmost half the share (49 percent) of the sensitive tooth pastemarket in the country, the com-pany said. There is room forgrowth within the segment, buteven more so outside. Henceexperts say it is to tap the poten-tial customer base outside thesubset of people with ‘sensitivegums’ that the brand’s corepromise is being repurposed.

“The campaign is designedto connect with people whohold back from enjoying theirfavourite foods, and thereforecompromise,” says AnuritaChopra, area marketing lead,oral care, GSK ConsumerHealthcare. Visually appealing,the ads are built on the premisethat the problem of sensitive

teeth is more common thanone thinks it is.

Titled #ForTheLoveOf, thecampaign is based on researchdone by the company thatshowed that one in three peoplesuffer from tooth sensitivity inIndia, but only one in five takeany action. As a brand, it hasbeen driving category buildingand has worked towards bring-ing about a shift in consumerbehaviour and understanding,according to Chopra.

GSK’s pharma imagery hasworked for Sensodyne in thepast (as part of the deal betweenHUL and GSK, Sensodyne willcontinue to be owned by latter),but Harish Bijoor, brand-expertand founder, Harish BijoorConsults says, “Dental scienceand dental hygiene accou-trements market today is a high-ly segmented one. The tooth-paste is the lowest commondenominator in this arena. Andout here, the ordinary tooth-paste of the fluouride or gel vari-ety is a competence that is OTC.Sensodyne and its category is aprescriptive oriented category.”

Given the unique proposi-tion that Sensodyne has builtfor itself, is the brand strayingafar from its core offering, by

adopting a general tone in itscommunication? The ~10,400crore toothpaste market in Indiais highly penetrated categorygrowing at a steady rate and inthe last few years, there hasbeen a fresh momentum due toa growth in use ofspecialised tooth-pastes. The sensi-tivity categorystands at ~1,100 Crand Sensodyneleads the segment,followed by ColgateSensitive at 10 percent market shareand then a host ofother players such asThermoseal, Emoform, Senso-form, Vantej etc.

Given that the category isalready highly penetrated, mostof the gains are throughupgrades to premium/spe-cialised tooth pastes, priceincreases and increase in therepertoire of brands in thehouse holds. To grow therefore,brands such as Sensodyne needto tap into the general category.

Sensodyne’s journey thusfar, according to experts, hasbeen primarily about spread-ing the net and drawing asmany people as it can into its

ambit, within the sensitivegums segment. If it has to grow,the brand must first expand thecategory, say experts.

The latest campaign, devel-oped in partnership with Grey India and Wunderman

Thompson, is a dig-ital first campaign.“This is testimony tothe brand’s success-ful strategy in India.We will continue toinvest in the brandand its categorybuilding initiatives,”said Chopra.

The companyhas launched on-the-groundcampaigns with several mallsto spread its use among thepeople. It has also madeadvances in the market throughcollaborations with dentalhealth care professionals. Thebrand has launched variants,expanded into adjacent needspaces through offerings whichdelivered on sensitivity plusbenefits such as SensodyneDeep Clean, and SensodyneMulticare. The new campaignmarks a fresh attempt toexpand the brand’s appeal andreach and chart a course inhitherto uncharted waters.

Markets...“The markets do not know how to react tothe corona outbreak; they play the worst-case scenario. If there is no bad newsovernight, we could come back tomorrowre-thinking,” said Andrew Holland, CEOof Avendus Capital Alternate Strategies.

The news of new corona cases couldnot have come at a worse time for India,which is reeling under an economic andpolitical crisis. “Every Fortune 500 com-pany, which was reliant on China for themanufacture of its products, will have todiversify its production chain. If our man-ufacturing states can grab this opportu-nity, this could be a heaven-sent,” saidSaurabh Mukherjhea, founder ofMarcellus Investments.

Barring three, all sectoral indices of theBSE ended the session in the red. Metal aswell as oil and gas stocks were the worst-affected, with their respective gaugesfalling 2 per cent each. Two-third of Sensexcomponents ended with losses. SBI wasthe worst-performing Sensex stock.

Divestment...In her 2020-21 Budget, Finance MinisterNirmala Sitharaman also revised down-wards the tax revenue and total expendi-ture estimates for 2019-20, and widenedthe fiscal deficit target for the year to 3.8per cent of gross domestic product from3.3 per cent.

“The IRFC IPO will be done even inthis market. Whenever there is a shortwindow of opportunity this month, theIPO will be done. The OFSs are now like-ly to be done after March 31,” said the

official. This means they will contributeto the 2020-21 budgeted divestment pro-ceeds of ~2.1 trillion.

Last week, the Centre had divested 10per cent of its stake in RITES through OFS.The issuance bombed. “We raised justaround ~400 crore versus expectations of~1,000 crore,” the official said.

Travel firms...Expedia said it was laying off 3,000employees globally, beginning with HongKong and Singapore. Emirates andSingapore Airlines, too, have announcedcost-cutting.

Singapore Airlines is implementing a 5-15 per cent salary cut for employees, includ-ing its CEO and senior management, whileEmirates is offering voluntary leave with-out pay. “There are no last-minute cancel-lations. Fresh bookings are, however, beingpostponed. We do not have visibility onbusiness for the April-June period,” saidthe head of a travel company.

Italy is an important destination forIndians. Typically, group tours from Indiabegin from London and end in Rome. “Thegovernment has issued an advisory to curbnon-essential travel to Italy. As we headtowards the peak summer season, we antic-ipate a drop of 12-15 per cent in bookings,”said Sabina Chopra, co-founder, Yatra.com.

A MakeMyTrip spokesperson said:“There has been a definite slowdown inoutbound travel bookings. Travellers arebeing extremely cautious in making for-eign travel plans. Our outbound businessstands at 20 per cent of the overall business,which includes South East Asia. We doexpect a potential impact if the outbreak

spreads westwards. We have notseen any noticeable dip in domes-tic bookings.”

Carmakers...According to Deepak Jain, presi-dent of Auto ComponentManufacturers’ Association,India’s auto component industryimported parts worth $17 billion inthe financial year 2018-19. Of this,China’s share was $4.5 billion.

To be sure, China is ahead ofother countries in BS-VI. Mostglobal suppliers have used Chinato develop those parts as it allowedthem to achieve the kind of scalenot possible in India or elsewhere,explained Wadhera. Agarwal highlights some complexities.“Southern markets are at a better stage ofevolution than Hindi, on both penetration(of TV) and consumption. In Marathi,Bangla or other languages, there is an over-lap with Hindi. Among Marathi audiences,for instance, 70 per cent of the consump-tion is in Hindi and 30 per cent in Marathi.In Bangla, 45 per cent consumption is inBengali. The south is predominantly about‘my language’. On the Karnataka border,you might have bilingual consumption inTelugu/Kannada or Marathi/Kannada.”

Ravish Kumar, head (regional TV net-work), Viacom18, points to subtler differ-ences: “Programme tastes in Marathi aremore understated and more rooted. In Tamiland Telugu, they could go over the top.Bengali is struggling to find an identity.”

This has implications on everything —programming, advertising, and costs.“Earlier, there was lot of homogenisation inregional markets. Now, 80 per cent of theprogramming is unique to that market; just20 per cent would be remakes or dubs,”says Kumar. “Even the biggest formats —whether KBC or Bigg Boss — are on region-al TV. It is about local content with nation-al-level production values,” says Vaz.

When regional channels move from 12-13 hours of original content a week to 25hours, time spent usually doubles or tre-bles, reckons Agarwal. The second differ-ence is the choice of languages. In thenineties, various players had tried Punjabi,Gujarati, and languages with a Hindi over-lap. Except for Marathi and Bangla, localcontent in other languages did not work.

In the last five years, many of these gen-res have shown growth for various reasons.For instance, several local players haveseeded the market in Punjabi. In Bhojpuriand Odia, BARC finally has a good sampleto generate TV ratings. This in turn broughtin advertisers prompting national playersto invest in those markets.
