Early lacrosse balls were made of deerskin, clay, stone, and sometimes wood. Lacrosse played a significant role in the community and religious life of tribes across the continent for many years. Lacrosse may have developed as early as the 12th century and since then it has undergone many modifications. The French Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brbeuf, saw Iroquois tribesmen play it in 1637 and he was the first European to write about the game. He called it lacrosse. Nowadays the sport has gained increasing visibility in the media, with a growth of college, high school, and youth programmes throughout the country. The owners of Canadian hockey arenas invented a reduced version of the game, called box lacrosse, it is an indoor version of the game played by teams of six players.
