OPERATORS AND SYSTEMS

Brazil has 21 urban passenger transport systems on rails distributed in 11 states and the DC, covering less than 50% of the country.

These systems are operated by 14 companies, 6 of which are private.

FUTURE INVESTMENTS

In addition to the projects that are already a reality,

Brazil has a portfolio of more

than

25 projects of systems on

rails

That sum to about

1,266 KM in lines, that can

DUPLICATE the current Brazilian

network

It is important to keep the resources to

continue expanding the rails network to ensure the

mobility of the future.

TRANSPORTATION & DEVELOPMENT

The study "metro-railway carriage of passengers", FROM the National Confederation of Transport (CNT) shows that to develop transport in large and medium cities, Brazil needs to expand the network of urban rail systems in at least 850 km (520 mi). This means an increase of 80% compared to current Brazilian network. The costs for this investment amounted to R$ 167.13 bi (45.28 bi euros), including the construction and operation of current systems and also the acquisition of trains and already installed infrastructure recovery.

Consumption of

1.8 GWh in 2016.

The share of electric traction of trains in Brazil total

energy consumption is

negligible in view of its importance to

the mobility of Brazilians.

ELECTRICITY AND SUSTAINABILITY

Despite the low energy consumption, Brazilian rails operators put efforts to modernize trains with direct current traction, contributing even more to the sustainability of our country.

The old trains use DC motors, which consume much more energy to pull the

cars and move them in the system.

TRAIN CC MOTOR MODERNIZED TRAIN Modern trains use AC motors, which consume between 25% and 30% less

than the old trains.

REVITALIZATION OF DEGRADED AREAS

DEPOIS

The rail systems when associated with urban projects enable revitalization in degraded areas providing greater welfare for the

population.

24

Page 25: Igor Baria - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarinanewtonrailway.ufsc.br/files/2017/08/Overview_Metro_5.pdf · Igor Baria BRAZILIAN URBAN RAIL SYSTEMS SCENARIO Balance 2016/2017

ORGANIZATION OF URBAN SPACE

The benefits of the subway rail system

go far beyond traditional ones.

Added to sustainability are very important factors: use of

urban space and revitalization of degraded areas.

Rail systems require 20 times less space than other

mobility alternatives.

25

Page 26: Igor Baria - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarinanewtonrailway.ufsc.br/files/2017/08/Overview_Metro_5.pdf · Igor Baria BRAZILIAN URBAN RAIL SYSTEMS SCENARIO Balance 2016/2017

HIGH TRANSPORT CAPACITY

In addition to reducing the environmental impact, the

implementation of rail systems also stands out for its high transport

capacity. A single line located underground, e.g., is capable of

carrying approximately 60,000 passengers per hour / direction.

Combined with this high transport capacity, rail systems provide increased mobility in urban

centers, increasing the quality, safety and regularity of public

transport for the population by reducing noise pollution and

atmospheric emissions.

This saving is measured only in terms of reduction in:

• Emissions of pollutants • Fuel consumption • Travel times • Number of accidents

CHALLENGES

•Maintain investments to ensure the execution of works in progress

•Increase the volume of investments for the development of the sector

•Implement new rail systems in Brazilian cities

•Invest in expansion and modernization of existing systems

•Integrated urban transport system of cities

20.jun.2013 Rio de Janeiro – People rally

30

Developed country is not where the poor people travel by car, but where the rich travel by public

transport.

Page 31: Igor Baria - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarinanewtonrailway.ufsc.br/files/2017/08/Overview_Metro_5.pdf · Igor Baria BRAZILIAN URBAN RAIL SYSTEMS SCENARIO Balance 2016/2017

CHALLENGES

Reoneration of Payroll

32

Maintaining the payroll tax exemption for rail and subway passenger sector was correct. The sector serves the population of middle and low income and the impact of reoneration would be very bad for the industry and for Brazilian families. The tax relief contributes to the maintenance of the current jobs and the generation of new opportunities.

CHALLENGES

Questions

32

1. How can urban rails improve the quality of life? How to measure ?

2. Are urban rails profitable? 3. Should government subsidize PPPs taking

into account the indirect benefits?
