About the music: For a project, ITG’s Commissions Committee was seeking to meet two particular objectives:

gender diversity and an outstanding work by a Latin American composer. Clarice Assad became the unanimous first choice. Her new work, Pendulum, is indeed “A dynamic work for trumpet, scat singing and piano, featuring extended vocal techniques, vocal percussion, and an extra part for mouth harp,” as she describes. The fifteen-minute, three-movement composition “explores dance-like rhythmic intensity, rich harmonic color of the music from South America, and a beautiful, longing intermezzo-esque movement for piano and trumpet.” After the premiere performance and further reflection, Assad retitled the second movement, originally titled “Celestial” as “The Caregiver,” since she believed this to be a more accurate depiction of the music. Trumpeter José Sibaja joined Assad (vocalist and pianist) on July , , for the premiere at the ITG Conference in Miami.
