The BA (Hons) Illustration Course at the University of Portsmouth o! ers students an opportunity to question, re" ect and analyse their own work and its commentary in the context of the work of other designers, # lm makers, painters, sculptors, writers, etc. We provide an educational experience allowing students to understand their role as a cultural producer in a broad, social, political, and historical context.

As illustrators, we have a unique voice which can challenge and change convention. At Portsmouth, we do all we can to nurture and develop this potential, through access to a wide range of teaching, learning and studio resources as well personal encouragement to develop your motivation and " exibility.

$ e course gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of ways in which to pursue illustration, through both traditional and contemporary methods. Students are encouraged to experiment with a variety of media from print to animation, textiles to object and model making, to freely re-de# ne illustration and express their individual voice.

$ e course will develop your knowledge of new image-making technology, which will enhance all students’ future employment prospects.

We maintain close links with employers to make sure that the professional practice elements you’ll undertake on this course are in line with current and future industry trends.

I endeavour to communicate complex scienti# c themes using a variety of methods and materials, including laser cutting, printmaking and book works. My most recent work focuses on ‘Origins’ (the origin of the universe, nature and human life), the Solar System and the 540 million year old creatures from the Cambrian Era that lie at the roots of our evolutionary tree of life. My work is not only a visual interpretation of scienti# c information, but on a more personal level, is a way to gain a better understanding of where we come from, engage with the natural world and appreciate the wonders of our universe.

I go by the alias of ‘orangereed’ yet lack a good reason as to why this is. I’m a freelance illustrator currently situated in Portsmouth. I always try to keep my work quite light hearted, usually throwing in a small amount of humour. You could say my work represents a piece of my personality. I dabble in both traditional and digital mediums to produce artwork but feel most comfortable behind a computer screen using both Illustrator and Photoshop. I have become increasingly interested in sequence, comics, zines/books and screen-printing and incorporate this into my work. $ e process usually starts out by drawing some rough sketches and thumbnails, I’ll then go over the preferred one in ink, scan it into Illustrator and/or Photoshop and work the magic.

Primarily working in collage, both digital and by good old-fashioned hand, I like to produce imagery that excites the mind. Constantly hoarding magazines, newspapers, packaging and general rubbish, the idea of transforming everyday items, sheets and scraps into something visually exciting is really the driving force behind my work.Textured papers and organic materials often excite me, and combining these materials with bold ‘hand cut’ type and bright colour creates interesting contrasts within much of my work. I don’t draw, I make pictures and draw inspiration from all of the objects that surround my life and develop, reuse and manipulate these to create my own visual responses. Often slightly fantastical, I like to think that some of my creations are just between the realms of reality and # ction.

The theme of my work this year was Contrast and Atmosphere in Winter, and it was the aspects of colour and life in its surroundings which I was particularly engrossed in. My research varied from looking at the use of light and atmosphere in paintings during the Impressionist movement, to researching weather systems and snow and ice as a substance. In response to my body of work I created various solutions; an interior range of wallpapers, cushions and crockery, a box collection of screenprints, a series of Christmas cards, a piece of glassware and a Children’s Picture Book. I particularly enjoyed writing and illustrating my # rst picture book, and am pleased with the result. I also gainedvaluable experience through the many professional practice elements which I completed.

Raised in the luscious county of Buckinghamshire, Jaf spent his childhood doing as other children from the countryside do, gallivanting through leafy meadows, chasing butter" ies and getting high on beautiful fresh air. So what went wrong?! Did this upbringing harbour the incessant need to mock everything around him? Possibly. But it seems that the moment he picks up a pencil the ‘inner-cynic’ seems to stir from within. $ e power is within the pen!Jaf ’s cynical artwork was only given the chance to " ourish during his three year stint at the University of Portsmouth, where he studied a BA (Hons) in Illustration. Here his ideas were allowed to run free, untamed. Now he is looking to unleash himself upon the world . . .

Objects of A! ection are an ongoing art project by Illustrative artist Mike Purdy. $ e main aim is to focus on the ways in which society interact on a personal level with objects - Both physically and mentally. Why do we collect things? What, if any value do they hold to us? Do they feature any sentimental values or personal memories that deem them priceless? What objects if any do you own or collect and what stories do they tell?$ rough this project I have produced ten pieces of work. Five focusing on my own objects of value and under the title ‘Heroes for Sale’, # ve that represent iconic # ctional characters. I have used both my style of black line drawing before converting them to clean dynamic " at coloured compositions and photography, all of which can be viewed on my website.

I have enjoyed my 3 years on the illustration course at Portsmouth. I learned to improve my mark making and drawing and learned to use a variety of materials to illustrate with. I already liked pen and ink and using Photoshop but through the course, I have added to my use of materials such as collage and monoprinting. I have found that I really enjoy using just a pen or pencil drawing and adding colour via Photoshop. What I enjoy illustrating are animals and the natural environment.I am looking foreword to the next part of my illustration life.

My creations always begin with a drawing or sketch. Starting in this traditional manner follows with the application of a huge range of mixed media from paint, collage and ink. Finally the last touches are done in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator; which allows a lot of " exibility and control over the outcome. Working in this way means that, while the # nished image is digitally enhanced, it still retains a traditional feel that when used e! ectively can express a lot about the subject matter. I would hope that, when seeing my work, viewers would perceive it as textural, thoughtful and most importantly enjoyable.

I use a combination of hand drawn mixed media with varied levels of digital enhancement. I like working in mixed media and I enjoy the level of variety that it brings and number of possible outcomes that can be achieved. I feel my work is best suited to book illustration, magazine covers/articles and children’s illustrations. I have produced my own series of art zine’s themed on genetic modi# cation in animals and enjoyed the style of work. I am also fond of screen printing, laser cutting and more hands on work with woods.

This work you see in front of you is about journeys. From the beginning of this self directed project I have been interested in types of journeys especially journeys we take throughout life as well as emotional, travel orientated journeys, and the evidencing of such journeys. In my illustrations I like to use various forms of mixed media and ephemera.Styles of which I work in are Collage, Photography, ink , painting and drawing. As well as the above I am interested in plays on words , phrases , common expressions and hand made/ produced elements.

I have a somewhat dirty/gritty style mixing Mono print with montage and collage creating textured and busy illustrations. Adding high contrast colours and shades strengthens the impact to grab the viewer’s attention. I direct my illustrations with my own personal views and understandings on the world and topical events resulting sometimes in quite shocking messages. I am continuing to experiment with di! erent techniques and styles applying what I learn to develop my own work in a way that expresses me, because its all about me.

This is one of a series of images I produced for a book that explores elements of George Orwell’s 1984. $ roughout my research I have studied narratology and semiotics, which has aided me to visually distil large amounts of written exposition. I have combined this knowledge with the discipline of camera framing and elements of storyboarding. Compositional concepts such as negative and positive space, angled shots, and the ‘rule of thirds’ are all employed heavily in my work. I tend to use a mix of media and various methods that fuse traditional with digital: whatever gets the job done most e! ectively. $ e majority of my work leans towards the irreverent, with a vein of dark humour and I have a strong passion for sequential/narrative imagery.

Lotti Haxell is a conceptualillustrator based in London. Having realised that she enjoyed telling stories she focused her attention on work imbued with inherent narrative structure. Her interests in sci-# literature and cinema mixed with a love of video games has deeply in" uenced her to create work which is more than a purely visual experience. She gets the greatest satisfaction from creating playful, exploratory pieces which hopefully engage and challenge a viewer. As a result of the futuristic setting, the work on a show in this exhibition can be viewed as a humorous critique of contemporary branding and packaging techniques. $ e viewer is, then, invited to interact with the products as they would with their real-world counterparts.

Enthusiastic, imaginative and inspired by a love for the hand drawn, handmade and collaged, my work often encapsulates these character traits. Primarily it revolves around the creation of screen prints, handmade books and drawings constructed around line and the build up of cross hatching.I enjoy illustrating subjects that make you think and are not always easy to visualise. Occasionally I like to bring elements of light humour into my work; if not directly in the drawings then through the content. In addition to this I have developed a love for hand drawn typography and the freedom of expression that accompanies it.

I primarily work with digital mediums. Creating work on paper then manipulating and colouring it via computer. My work is generally narrative and normally contains some level of humour. I am particularly interested in the visual telling of stories, especially through the medium of strip cartoons. On leaving University I endeavour to further explore these mediums, expanding on a body of work which is both interesting and aesthetically pleasing to both me and the viewer.

I enjoy working in both traditional and digital mediums. I particularly like working with collage and the serendipity of creating illustrations from recycled imagery. $ roughout my time as an illustration student I developed a passion for bookmaking, becoming interested in the processes and possibilities that self publishing holds. I hope to further explore and develop these areas throughout my career as an illustrator.

This project, looking into sea stories, superstition and folklore, lead me to concentrate on Jules Verne’s “Twenty $ ousand Leagues Under the Sea”. I wanted to revive the romanticism, fear and wonder that surrounds the sea through descriptions of the creatures in this book. I was heavily in" uenced by the art of Joseph Cornell and the Steam punk movement. I was trying to recapture the mixture of industrious scienti# c advances of the Victorian period (when the book was published), alongside the mystery of the sea.By using various objects, textures and mediums I enjoy creating work with very handcrafted feel. Recurring themes in my work seem to be nature, and social and cultural history sometimes combining the two.

Within my work I try to create something that visually links environmental subjects and issues. My illustrations are often educational and aim to raise awareness predominantly focussing on topics within nature. I have experimented with creating imagery through both print and digital mediums. $ e imagery represents the changes that coral reefs encounter and what in" uences these changes. I wanted to create something the viewer could interact with so I have incorporated elements of 3d imagery within my work. $ e main aim of my project was to portray the alien like characteristics of coral that people are often unaware of, focusing on the moons role in corals reproduction, hunting and defence systems.

I’ve been drawing or creating imagery for as long as I can remember. My work tends to deal with the macabre, the melancholy and the generally dark – not out of choice, it just seems to gravitate towards that end of the spectrum on its’ own. I draw inspiration from many di! erent sources but most commonly I # nd myself being inspired by # lms, children’s books and graphic novels. I’ve always adored anything that can tell, or at least suggest, a narrative and that moment when the viewer becomes entangled in a narrative, causing reality and # ction to blur, is one of my favourite things to experience. My aim in life is to assist and amplify those moments for others through stories and worlds that only the imagination can reach.

I would de# ne myself as a paper artist. My style has developed from silhouettes to more detailed paper cuttings. I use many techniques to create more intricate paper cuttings such as scraping texture into paper or layering. I mainly like to illustrate animals but through my # nalproject I was able to illustrate people. I found this challenging but at the same time enjoyable as I have gained a lot from it. I really enjoy that my illustrative style looks very handcrafted as I feel that is more e! ective. I enjoy using an array of bright and vivid colours in my work as I want my work to look as fun as possible. By doing this I think I create a more contemporary twist on current paper cutting techniques.

My name is Susanna Jackson and I like to create art in order to make others smile. I believe art should be used to brighten someone’s day and that’s exactly what I aim to achieve through my illustrations. I tend to use photoshop as it presents my work in a professional manner containing each colour within the lines. It also allows me to play around with a number of textures, bringing about another style in working that I enjoy. $ is style being collage based work. I also enjoy producing cartoon’s and fashion illustrations. Photoshop isn’t the only source I use in production I also use watercolours and the classic pen and pencil.
