Target audience

• The themes and conventions we have included will make it appeal to our target audience (young adults) because they are typical of the thriller genre.

• It will also intrigue them as they will be confused by what's going on and therefore will want to find out what happens later on

Themes

Psychological:• Confuses the audiences minds with the plot

twist of Enzo shooting someone – they thought she was imaginary

• We have chosen this theme as we have found it is effective in thrillers we have watched eg. Shutter island, Inception and Déjà vu

Themes

Distrust:• Freddies friends do not believe him and think

he is crazy• This makes the audience empathise with him

even though he is committing crimes – this typical of a thriller because everyone has a different opinion

Key Thriller Conventions

Crime:• In our Thriller opening we are including a lot of

crime. Such as, robbery (stealing), gun violence, assault.

• These are common features in Thriller films because they build suspense and tension. They also give the audience a mystery and it helps to keep them intrigued.


Complex Plot:• In our Thriller opening there is quite a complex plot.

Freddie is obviously suffering from some sort of mental illness, as he is seeing a ‘friend’ called Enzo.

• Complex plots are essential in Thriller films because it leaves the audience confused and bursting to know more. They also try to make assumptions of the plot ending – which will keep them more intrigued because they want to know if they have guessed right.


Suspense.• We are going to edit our film to have a lot of

suspense. We will start our film off with very slow paced editing and then as it goes along we will speed it up.

• Suspense is very important in thriller films because it is what keeps the audience on edge and intrigued. Suspense will also make the opening a lot more interesting and hopefully will make the audience want to know more.

Key Thriller ConventionsGrimy Settings• We will film most of our opening in the dark and in relatively mysterious and gloomy places. • This is another key convention in Thriller films because it fits in with the rest of the film because thrillers hardly ever have a happy story or ending.

Plot Twist• In our opening we are going to have a mini-

plot twist. We have the audience believing that Enzo is just an imaginary friend. However at the end of the opening she kills someone – so the audience is left confused and wanting to know more.

• This is very common in Thriller films because it makes people think.

Freddie• Freddie is and 17 year old boy who is

suffering from schizophrenia. He sees his imaginary friend Enzo and is easily lead astry by her.

• He is in a care home because his parents committed suicide, and he found them in their bedroom when he was 8.

• He has a group of friends from school who are unaware of his past.

• We are planning for this to be played by Tom Hayden because he has drama experience and we able to rely on his attendance.

Enzo• Enzo is going to be a very complex character as the audience will be

unsure if she is real or not. They will begin to feel as though she is a bad an imagination which just influences Freddie; however at the end of opening she shoots someone.

• She will have a very run-down appearance (inspired by Bellatrix Lestrange)• We have found a youtube tutorial which we will use for Enzo’s make up.• Enzo is going to be played by Amelia as she is part of our group and

therefore will definitely be there.

The extras

• Freddie’s group of friends consists of four people – two are supportive and want to help him however the other two think he is just crazy.

Research

• For our research we have watched loads of openings of Thriller films to get some ideas. E.g. Inception, Shutter Island, La Confidential, The Dark Knight Rises, The usual Suspects, Unstoppable and The Mummy.

• We will also carry out a survey asking people what they expect to see and want to see in a Thriller film to help us along the way.

Problems

• We may have the problem of running out of time to film and edit – we shall prevent this by making sure everyone keeps up and meets deadlines.

• We may have problems with going overtime on our Thriller film as it is a complex plot and we need to make sure we inform the audience all they need to know to understand it without giving away too much or going over time. – We will make sure this doesn’t happen by planning each scene very carefully.
