PARISH NURSE NOTE

Anointing of the Sick Next Sunday, September 21st, we will be offering the Anointing of the Sick during Mass. This sacrament is offered once a month during Mass to anyone who is not just physically ill or suffering from chronic disease, but also anyone dealing with a mental health crisis who is in need of God’s healing. Please feel free to participate in the sacrament by sitting in the first 4 pews on the right hand side of the church. "The Friends of the Poor Walk " is coming up on Saturday, Sept 20th at St Louis U High. We are hoping to exceed our donations and sponsors over last year's amount of $5000.00. Packets for walkers are available in the back of church. Remember, if you can't walk, you can sponsor some-one! Just some facts about this walk. It began in 2008 to cele-brate the 175th anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP), one of the oldest and most effective charitable organizations in the world. Monies raised are applied to a wide range of assis-tance to the needy and those living in poverty, including: hous-ing assistance, disaster relief, job training and placement, food pantries and dining halls, clothing, transportation and utility costs, care for the elderly and medicine. All proceeds directly benefit people in the communities where the money is raised and there are no administrative fees associated with the event. Each community's walk is organized and run by its own SVDP Conference or Council. The website (www.fopwalk.org) offers more details. Contacts are Mary (406-3976) / Carole (644-1664) Haislip

STEWARDSHIP In every way I have shown that by hard work of that sort we must help the weak, and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to re-ceive.” Acts 20:35 As Christian stewards, it is important that we learn to set prior-ities and make choices to do the work that God truly wants us to do for him. It isn’t always easy to share our time, talents and treasures with others, but our lives are enriched and blessed when we choose to give of ourselves to those who are in need. September 27th and 28th we will celebrate Stewardship Weekend. Helpful information will be available to guide you in turning over your lives to become disciples of Jesus and stew-ards who know that service is the way to peace, happiness and everlasting life.

A Deacon's view while the Pastor is away. This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, ordinary time will return next Sunday. Last Sunday's commentary on the Eucharistic Prayer (also know as the canon of the Mass) ended with an introduc-tion to the EPICLESIS, the action of the priest just prior to the consecration when he calls down the Holy Spirit over the bread and wine. With his hands extended over the gifts he prays that the Spirit will make our gifts holy and that they will become the Body and Blood of Christ. The actual wording differs slightly in each of the four Eucharistic Prayers we regularly use. As a clue for this event during Mass, I bow deeply as the hands of the priest are extended over the bread and wine. It is at this moment that the Church implores the total presence of the Trinity in our act of worship to the Father, through Christ and the Spirit! I urge you to take a few minutes and find the Epiclesis for each of the Eucharistic Prayers found in the worship aid in your pew, so this sacred action does not slip by you! These articles of mine have been a poor attempt to explain why a communion service presided over by a deacon or lay person can never be equated with the celebration of the Eucharist. We have been very blessed to have Sunday liturgy but think of what so many Catholics do without when Mass can-not be celebrated regularly in their localities. So, while a deacon is very happy to preside over a communion service when it is necessary, I hope those who attend such a service understand how much our hearts must be on fire for the celebration of the Mass, and its Eucharistic Pray-ers, which only a priest can pray. We join him as we eternally praise the mystery of the Trinity. Deacon Gerry

Scripture Reflection Questions: 1. The snake was the curse and the cure. How can the things that are the hardest in life, be the vehicle that bring you closest to God? 2. When has life's journey worn your patience thin? 3. How does the witness of Jesus' humbling himself lift you up? 4. Failure, repentance, forgiveness, failure, repentance, forgiveness,--- how does this pattern play itself out in your life?
