Mes chers amis, On this 5th Sunday of Lent, the pruning of our senses takes another step as the statues in church are covered with cloths. We already find ourselves one week away from the beginning of the most sacred week of the Church’s Liturgical Year – Holy Week. It will begin with Palm Sunday (next Sunday) and then move into the Sacred Triduum – the three days on which the Church most solemnly celebrates the passion, death, and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately, in many places today, a reductionist mindset has set in, leading people to think that the liturgies of Holy Week are too long or not very important anyway. On the contrary, they are essential to our Catholic identity and our spiritual lives. I want to challenge you, if it is at all possible, to attend the liturgies of Holy Week and especially, the Sacred Triduum.

On Palm Sunday, we commemorate the entrance of Our Lord into Jerusalem for the final time – to suffer and die for our sins. We recall that many of the people who greeted Him with “Hosanna” are the same ones who later cried out “crucify Him!”. We carry our palms associating ourselves with those who greet Him with joy at one time and betray Him through sin at another time. We recognize that we are one with them whom Jesus loved and died for.

On Holy Thursday, we celebrate two of the greatest mysteries of our Faith: the institution of the Sacred Priesthood and the Holy Eucharist. These two gifts of the Lord to His Church are so closely bound that there cannot be one without the other. Without Priest, we do not have access to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass or the Lord’s Sacred Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist. We show our love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist by bowing down before Him in adoration.

On Good Friday, the Church celebrates the day that Our Lord Jesus died for our sins. There is no Mass celebrated out of respect for His one eternal sacrifice offered to our Father on this day. We gather to celebrate His Passion by listening to His Word, venerating the cross, and receiving Holy Communion. It is a day of prayer and penance.

On the evening of Holy Saturday, we gather in darkness and begin the celebration of the “Mother of all Vigils”. This is the Church’s most solemn night of prayer and worship, celebrating the Crucified Son of God who has been raised from the dead! We will hear in God’s Word the history of our salvation. All of us will be able to sing the Church’s song of praise once again, taking upon our lips the praise of the angels.

Again, I urge you, as Catholics, if possible, to attend the great celebrations of Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum. May Our Lady help us to understand better and look forward to these sacred days that are coming.

Gospel Summary

John 8: 1-11

Although most scholars believe that this story of the woman caught in adultery was not part of John’s original writings, it is nevertheless an excellent example of Jesus’ style. First of all,

some of the religious leaders tried to trick Jesus into going against the law of Moses by not having the woman stoned or going

against the Roman law that did not allow the Jewish people to impose the death sentence. Again, Jesus seemed trapped, but

drew in the sand with his finger until he presented his answer. In an effort to demonstrate the forgiveness God had for his people,

Jesus challenged the Pharisees to throw a stone if they were without sin. Of course, none could throw a stone and slowly the

crowed drifted away. When only the woman remained, Jesus showed mercy toward her and told her to resist further sin.

Reflection for Families

Of course, we will never fully know what Jesus drew in the sand. Whether his drawing was with purpose or not has been lost to

history and most likely would not change the story. An important lesson we can gain from his action is that he took the time to

gather his thoughts before speaking. How often do we say the first thing that comes to mind and end up regretting it? Thinking first helps us present a Christ-like presence to others even if we

are dealing with a serious conflict.

Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family

Ask each family member to help create a list of “pet peeves” or annoying habits in others. Give each member a chance to

consider the list and see if they claim ownership of any of the actions listed. Ask one another how this exercise is like the

woman and the Pharisees in today’s Gospel. What will you do to “throw a stone” at the guilty person? What action can you take

that resembles the action of Jesus? Pray for support to accomplish this action.
