Better is the end of a thing than its beginning,

and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Ecclesiastes 7:8

If the forecast proves true, it looks like March will come in like a lamb. And if the old saying holds true,

then March will go out like a lion. Either way, Winter is coming to an end. Some people look forward to

the start of Winter. I, however, am looking forward to the end of Winter. When Autumn starts to fade,

we all know that Winter is on her way. I find no great joy in that. Better is the end of Winter than its

beginning.

I think the same is true for this season we call Lent. Lent begins with what is probably the second most

somber service of the year (only Good Friday is more somber). As we make our Journey to the Cross, we

are to examine ourselves. We ask, “Why is it that Christ had to go to the Cross?” We know the answer. If

we’re honest, we answer with our heads down and our hearts heavy. We know the answer. We are the

answer.

Lent is uncomfortable. It is supposed to be uncomfortable. It is also necessary. You might call it the Win-

ter for our souls. In examining ourselves, we lay bare the cold and darkness of our sinful being. There is

no great joy in that. But it is in that laying bare we are strengthened in the weaknesses that are exposed.

In the cold and darkness we are opened up to the love and light of Christ Jesus. Lent is necessary but I

don’t look forward to it. Better is the end of Lent than its beginning.

Lent requires patience. I have met a lot of patient people, but I have never met anyone who did not strug-

gle with patience. A quick glance into our sinful being only reveals what is at the surface – the symptoms

of our sinful being. Pride says a quick glance is enough, I know what the problem is and I can deal with it.

Pride says I can do this on my own, I don’t need the Cross or the Empty Tomb. Patience helps us sift

through the ashes and expose the root of our cold and dark sinful being. Patience softens our hearts.

The end of Lent is what brings us all together. It is what we look forward to. It is the cross and the emp-

ty tomb. It is joy and hope and love and eternal life. It is forgiveness. It is the Springtime for our souls

when the love and light of Christ Jesus drive out the cold and darkness of our sinful being. It is the new

life of eternal life. Better is the end of Lent than its beginning.

Lent comes in like a lamb – the Lamb of God, the lamb being led to the slaughter. Lent goes out like a lion

– the Lion of Judah, bringing hope and life through the destruction of sin and death. The Lamb and the

Lion both reveal God and his love. And as we travel through this journey of Lent, we walk with the Lion

and the Lamb to the end that brings us not to the cross, but to the Empty Tomb. This is the end that is

better than all beginnings.

Enjoy the journey and rejoice in the end.

In like a lamb….out like a lion….

Wee Care Preschool This month has gone by so fast! The three-year-olds have been studying dental health, love and feelings, and Noah and animals while the four-year-olds have been studying groundhogs and shad-ows, dental health, Valentine’s Day, and presidents and America. March is National Professional Social Work Month

March is National Professional Social Work Month, a time

to recognize social workers and thank them for all they do.

At Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), we’re grateful for our

many social workers who have dedicated their lives to

serving their communities!

Maybe you’ve never had a social worker involved in your

life. Yet, whether you realize it or not, you’ve had the bene-

fit of their behind-the-scenes work in your community. So-

cial workers help people help themselves in overcoming

life’s most difficult circumstances or managing challenges

of everyday living: poverty, abuse, mental illness, depres-

sion, addiction, disability, and many other situations.

Iowa wouldn’t be the same without the patience, guidance,

and empowerment that social workers provide. Happy Na-

tional Professional Social Work Month!

If you would like more information, please contact Deb

Whitford, LSI’s director of philanthropy and church rela-

tions, at 563-676-2065 or [email protected].

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congrega-tions of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ameri-ca) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Many of Cheryl’s favorite

memories involve raising

her two children, watching them thrive, and counting the

shoes in the doorway each night to see how many of her

children’s friends she would be making dinner for.

As her children grew up, Cheryl knew there were more

Iowa youth who needed a loving family and support system

like hers. That’s when her family began adopting.

“We were a welcoming family, and we really didn’t want

that journey to stop,” Cheryl says.

Since starting her journey as an adoptive parent 20 years

ago, Cheryl has welcomed 19 adopted children into her

family and her children range from ages 9 to 35. They

come from different backgrounds and cultures, and Cheryl

says it’s been enriching to celebrate those differences in

her home.

Iowa has a great need for more foster and adoptive fami-

lies like Cheryl’s. She says it has been a learning experi-

ence to raise so many different children but together, her

family has found lots of love and laughter along the way.

“People will say to us, ‘God bless you that you’ve done

this.’ We don’t see it that way,” Cheryl says. “We see it as

how blessed and thankful we are to have a family that’s so

big.”

The council discussed the options. All feel that Fu-sion Forward has more of a vested interest in our church. All feel it is important to keep it local. A motion was made and seconded, the following reso-lution was adopted, “Be it resolved to approve contracting with Fusion Forward to rebuild our website.”

Gene shared that Tammy Fischer resigned her posi-tion as church secretary/bookkeeper on January 20, 2018, by a text. Council members accept her resig-nation. Daryl Johnson suggested that the secretary/book-keeper that is hired be one in the same. Gene will stop at Bank Iowa to make necessary changes. Daryl will notify Portico of end of employment. Ed Gipper was present on behalf of the personnel committee. Council went over the job description for secretary/bookkeeper. A few changes and up-dates were suggested. Pastor Greg shared that a few church members have volunteered to help in the office. His concerns are for the bookkeeping things that need to be done. These things will be looked into. He is wondering if two part-time secretaries would be more beneficial rather than one. The council feels this would be an option if we can hire two people that are compatible. This would help with vacations, sick days, and other scheduling conflicts. Ed will share our ideas to the personnel committee. Pastor Greg asked if he should continue looking into the collaborative program. We will discuss later what our options are. Pastor Greg shared that Gina went to a Youth Board retreat. The others present all wanted to know how Gina gets the kids so in-volved. She was asked to give a presentation next year. The meeting was adjourned at 10:30pm, followed by The Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted by, Paula Fleming Council Secretary

February Pastoral Acts - Burial: Mildred (Midge) Potts, born August 5, 1924 in Des Moines, Iowa, died February 21, 2018 in Independence. Services were held at Immanuel on Monday, February 26, 2018.

Minutes/Actions Church Council Minutes January 23, 2018

The council meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Gene Budzine. Members present were Gene Budzine, Tom Johnson, Jan Abben, Ron Oline, Al Rueh-low, Shalon Frye, Paula Fleming, Erin Kelchen, Dennis Enright, and Pastor Greg DeBoer. Sarah Wieland, Josh Mieke, Ed Gipper were in attendance.

Council members were given an opportunity to share highs and lows. Devotions were read by Pastor Greg. A motion was made and seconded, the following resolu-tion was adopted, “Be it resolved to approve the De-cember Minutes of the Church Council Meeting.” Treasurer Daryl Johnson presented the Financial Report for December. General fund monthly expenses were $34,395.99 and general income was $68,901.43. Year to date expenses were $206,934.38 and year to date in-come was $215,758.09. A motion was made and se-conded, the following resolution was adopted, “Be it re-solved to approve the December Financial Report as presented.” Jan Abben shared that Advent, Christmas, and Lessons and Carols services were great. Ash Wednesday ser-vice will be at 6:30pm, February 14

th. Lenten meal and

service will be from 6:30-8:00pm, February 21, 28, March 7, 14, and 21. Meals will be served family style at the tables with service in the Fellowship room. Good Friday service will be 6:30pm, March 30

th.

Sarah Wieland and Josh Mieke gave presentations for updating the church’s website. Pastor Greg shared in-formation from Synod regarding their website analysis. Synod said our website is cluttered and outdated. That suggested to remove the weather and to have no slider announcements. They suggested adding a google map and to have the service times listed. Sarah asked what are we doing to bring and engage people? She suggested we have: an about us section, bios for staff, youth ministries, pay online option for offer-ing and dedicated funds, and a link for a YouTube page. She shared that Fusion Forward has three church mem-bers on staff and that all would be happy to help with the project. Josh shared that Go Daddy has over 20 years of website experience. They have several options for website de-sign. The offer a do it yourself plan and a do it for you plan. They have 24 hour help available. Both Sarah and Josh shared that their companies can help as much or as little as we need. We will have to find out who owns our domain and who our host is. We will need to buy out our domain name or start a new one. We have our domain through MyChurchWebsite, and Go Daddy has control of it.
