Pre-production. At this stage I wanted to keep the elements of British social realism films in order to fit in with other Film4 productions. I researched into what to include and what are quite common stereotypes for characters and narratives within Film4 films. I also watched a lot of Film4 films that show all British social realism elements that showed common things that maybe I could create and use to make a good narrative that relates to Britain's working class today. I also read into news stories to come up with a narrative and try and add those BSR elements to it to make it my own. I found a perfect narrative that was commendable into a British social realism film. The story I found was based on a 19 year old that had got pregnant by her boyfriend’s cousin and had not known. Eventually the cousin found out the baby was his 2 weeks before the baby’s birth and he murdered the teenager and along with killing the child too. The reason to why this piece of research was good and easy to turn into a BSR production because it contained those elements that make a BSR film like the teenage pregnancy and teenage violence. These elements allowed me to easily create this story into a real production and add other elements to make it more according to what you would see in a BSR film.

Pre-production.

At this stage I wanted to keep the elements of British social realism films in

order to fit in with other Film4 productions. I researched into what to include

and what are quite common stereotypes for characters and narratives within

Film4 films. I also watched a lot of Film4 films that show all British social

realism elements that showed common things that maybe I could create and

use to make a good narrative that relates to Britain's working class today.

I also read into news stories to come up with a narrative and try and add

those BSR elements to it to make it my own. I found a perfect narrative that

was commendable into a British social realism film. The story I found was

based on a 19 year old that had got pregnant by her boyfriend’s cousin and

had not known. Eventually the cousin found out the baby was his 2 weeks

before the baby’s birth and he murdered the teenager and along with killing

the child too. The reason to why this piece of research was good and easy to

turn into a BSR production because it contained those elements that make a

BSR film like the teenage pregnancy and teenage violence. These elements

allowed me to easily create this story into a real production and add other

elements to make it more according to what you would see in a BSR film.

Production. In the production stage the equipment did mean what would I use to film the

production and make it like how an actual BSR opening would be filmed. So I

filmed with a normal SD camera and a tripod and was really only the type of

equipment I used to film my shots. The location was an important part because I

wanted to make it seem run down and not really decorated and isolated. The

house I filmed in was my house and was being decorated at the time so it was all

over the place and really fit the gritty, urban look. The hallway that we mostly

filmed in really gave the edge to the shots as at the top of the stairs it was quite

dark so how the shots were positioned went really well with the natural lighting

we had around. In other Film4 films and other production companies like BBC

Films gave edge to their mise-en-scene as it is very important to keep within

everything that is shown to your audience to allow them to see and understand

what the lifestyle is like. That’s why the choice of cast was important too and to

who was going to play the characters and show them the way I wanted them to

be shown to the audience. For the female I wanted you to see the loneliness she

felt and I wanted the audience to grasp onto this in the way she said her dialogue.

The male I wanted to see a lot of rage in order to fit into the character that he is

meant to be and to send out the signal that he is dangerous and capable of a lot.

Distribution.

My production may be distributed on the internet for example content that would

be shown on sites. Film4 advertise their productions on their own website so their

audience will be aware of this. Other places like blogs and other social networking

sites like Facebook and twitter could advertise the production to make it known.

This will gain a lot of awareness to our target audience as these social networking

sites are usually used daily. BBC films is a good production company to distribute

BSR films as they use all the elements that are within BSR films. For example

pregnancy, drugs, working class status etc. and these combine with the

production company well as these are the sorts of genres they distribute to

Britain usually. There was a programme called ‘Underage and Pregnant’ and this is

a British version of the hit series in America ‘16 and Pregnant’ and this I linked to

my treatment because it went well with my production. ‘Fish Tank’ is a clear

example of BSR film that BBC have released and this film clearly shows all the

elements and stereotypes of what you would see. Another thing that this film has

is that it shows a different side to Britain today and allows our audience to

understand what it is like for people within that go through. BBC distributed this

on websites that advertised many films along with Film4 productions and this

went out to all audiences in Britain to gain awareness of the films.
