KEWASKUM HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

In a successful second year, over 400 people attended Fiesta Fun Night, hosted at

Kewaskum High School by the Spanish department. Members of the Spanish Club, KEY

Club, and Global Education helped prepare for the night and volunteered during the

event. Students of all ages made and decorated musical instruments from Spanish speak-

ing countries, including maracas, castanets, guiros, and flamenco guitars. All attendees

tasted Hispanic food donated by local businesses including Casa Tequila and La Mexi-

cana of West Bend, and Bryanna’s Bakery of Fond du Lac. In preparation for a school trip

to Panama this summer, the Spanish Traveler’s Club sold baked goods. The highlight of

the night was a dance performance by Ballet Folklórico, a Hispanic dance troupe from

West Bend. The group performed several traditional dances from different regions of

Mexico, and their colorful costumes reflected the group’s rich cultural heritage.

Kewaskum’s Spanish department would like to thank everyone who helped make this

year's event a success!

STUDENT SERVICES

ASSISTANCE FOR PARENTS IN GETTING

FINANCIAL AID FOR COLLEGE

College Goal Wisconsin is coming up on Wednesday, Febru-

ary 17th at 10:00 a.m. at West Bend High School. This event

will provide parents and/or students free assistance to com-

plete their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student

Aid). This is the form that all colleges / universities

require to be considered for federal and state financial

aid which includes grants, loans, work study, and scholar-

ships. The event is staffed by volunteers from the

college/university financial aid community, high school

counselors as well as college access personnel, and communi-

ty members.

There is a quick overview of what financial aid is and then

the families/students move into a computer lab where they

will actually sit down at the computer to begin filling out the

FAFSA. Many students are able to complete the FAFSA that

day and submit it. The form can also be saved and completed

at a later date if necessary. More information can be found

at www.wicollegegoalsunday.org or by contacting Mrs. Kapler

262-626-8427 (ext. 4144) or Mrs. Pokrzywa at KHS (ext.

4146).

ACT Testing - March 1-2, 2016 The ACT and ACT WorkKeys are assessments that are administered to all 11th grade students to evaluate the effectiveness of

educational programming in Wisconsin public schools. The results of these tests will comprise a portion of our school and district

report card. Additionally, ACT results are one of the primary standards by which students are admitted to educational institutions

beyond high school. In short, the assessment is an important one for our students, parents, staff, and community. A summary of each test can be found below:

It is our desire to create a distraction-free environment that is conducive to students performing at their very best on these important

assessments. As a result, only 11th grade students will attend school on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. All eleventh graders will report

to school at the regular 7:40 am start time, and will be served breakfast in the Kewaskum High School cafeteria from 7:40-8:00am. Eleventh graders will be testing in small groups of 8-10 students proctored by KHS faculty. Testing of 11th graders will last until

approximately 1:00pm. Please note that students will be dismissed for the day upon the conclusion of testing. If you would like

your child to receive a lunch upon completion of the test, please email the request… including your child’s name… to Michelle

Krueger at [email protected]. All lunch request need to be received by Monday, February 22nd. Buses will de-

part at the regular time of 3:10pm. The cafeteria will be open and available as a quiet study area for students who will be taking the

bus home.

***Please note… there will be NO SCHOOL for 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students on

Tuesday, March 1st.*** Wednesday, March 2nd will be a regular day of school, and will be the first day of our third trimester. The ACT WorkKeys will be

administered to all 11th graders in the morning. Upon the conclusion of testing, 11th graders will then resume their regular class

schedule. If you have any questions about any of these assessments or the schedule outlined above, please contact me at 626-8427 x4132 or

Mark Bazata, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, at 626-8427 x8009. Sincerely, Scott Stier - KHS Principal

-secondary institutions only upon student request.

ACT WorkKeys (March 2nd)

ACT WorkKeys is an applied skills assessment system that helps students compare their skills to the skills required by specific

KHS on FIRE—PBIS Corner

We are looking for students interested in being involved with PBIS – students can contact any PBIS teacher leader

or watch for upcoming flyers.

FIRE Data: Data has been tracked over the course of the school year and so far eighty-nine percent of the student

body has embraced the PBIS standards as shown by having one or less behavioral referrals.

FIRE Cards are changing to FIRE Tickets: The process of students being able to choose prizes is changing a bit, but

the purpose and drive behind it is still the same. Students will now receive FIRE tickets for positive behaviors in-

stead of FIRE card punches. Each FIRE ticket can be redeemed for an immediate small prize in the KHS library

and then students will choose which prize bucket to put the FIRE ticket into for a drawing of a larger prize. Currently

drawings are held twice a month. The use of FIRE tickets will give students more opportunities to win great prizes

and will also accommodate students request to not have to carry the FIRE cards around at all times since the FIRE

tickets can be turned in immediately. Any teacher or staff member at any time throughout the school day can give

out FIRE tickets. The purpose behind the FIRE tickets is to increase positive behaviors by all students.

FIRE Drawings: Students can turn in their full FIRE tickets for various prizes. Drawings are held twice a month for a

wide variety of prizes each month. Students can choose which buckets to enter their FIRE tickets into and there is

no limit on the amount of tickets each student can turn in.

Up-coming prizes are:

-passes to school events

-front of the lunch line passes -sit in teacher’s chair for the week in class

-teacher carries books for the day

-Custom cornholl board

-McDonalds gift certificates

-Prom ticket

All of these prizes are thanks to local businesses, donations from various clubs, or have been fundraised for. We

are always looking for PBIS prize donations – an actual item to give away, or monetary donations are accepted and

greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in donating anything toward our prize program, please email Kristen Kapler: [email protected] or Lisa Hencsik: [email protected].
