At the 20th class day, any students who dropped from the university are removed from the 12th day file, and the remaining students comprise the official census day data; students and faculty added after the 12th class day are also not included in the census day file. Course level data are reported in the CBM004 class report and are linked to the faculty member previously identified. Course level data include the number of students taught, the number of sections taught and an approximation of the number of semester credit hours (SCH) and weighted semester credit hours. A responsibility factor for each faculty member is applied to the SCH and weighted SCH calculations. The responsibility factor equals the proportion of credit hour time the faculty member has with the students over the course of a semester in regularly scheduled meetings. For example, if a professor team teaches a course, the responsibility factor might be 50% or some other percentage less than 100%. Weighted semester credit hours are calculated using the funding code (the discipline as defined by THECB), course level (lower division, upper division, Master’s etc.) and the 2010-11 weighting factors. “The purpose of this report is to collect data on the academic duties and services of each person who has any type of faculty appointment, regardless of their source of funds or their assignment. • Time PeriodFaculty and course data are for Fall 2009, Spring 2010 and Summer 2010, the most recent and complete academic year available.

    Data Sources

Institution-specific notesBelow are each institution's notes which contain an explanation of methodology used and data collected (see rows 45-135).

Unit of AnalysisFaculty are the unit of analysis for this report. Faculty data are reported in the CBM008 faculty report based on the following definition:

The unit of analysis for this report is significant, because the THECB uses course level data to calculate weighted SCH for state funding formulas. Since this request concerns individual faculty members, weighted SCH were assigned to each faculty member. This is an unconventional use of the CBM data, and as such, the weights for this particular request are not comparable to the weighted SCH calculated for funding formulas by the THECB.

Important Notes about the June 28th Faculty Data Filefor UT System Academic Institutions

Data are reported by the academic institutions to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in the CBM008 (faculty) and CBM004 (course) reports and reflect data collected on census date, 12th class day of the semester.

Include research faculty, librarians, administrators, if they have faculty titles, and faculty who may be on leave.”

  • Variable information:

“Other faculty” includes adjunct, special, visiting, emeritus, and lecturer faculty.

Instructional faculty includes all those who are NOT staff/administrators or TA's who were not the instructor-of-record

Miscellaneous:Due to the combining of multiple disparate reports, some information has been projected/estimated for inclusion in this report.

    Institutional Notes:

Faculty appointment percentages used to indicate full-time or part-time status are based on the average long semester appointment, and include combined appointments that may consist of one or more of these responsibilities: 1) direct instructional activities; 2) administrative assignments directly supplementing the teaching function; 3) academic support assignments; 4) research activities; and/or 5) public service, student services, institutional support and operations. Average Pct Appt data were calculated based on available records for the long semesters (fall and spring). If an instructor only taught during one of those semesters, the average is based on only one value.

Benefits have been estimated at 25% for 50% or higher appointments and at 9.3% for those with appointments of less than 50% with the exception of UTD, UTPA, and UTPB who provided actual benefits information from their HR systems based on IPEDS HR survey components (see http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/glossary/index.asp?id=251).

Research Expenditures are for the FY09-10 year and include different allocation methods for Co-PIs across institutions. For all academic institutions except UTEP, UTPA, and UTT, research expenditure data contain blanks for missing values rather than zero’s. Institutional (central) data stores are only available for those research expenditures that are realized through awards handled by the Office of Sponsored Projects. Those awards do not include many types of research fellowships and grants obtained by our faculty, especially in the arts and humanities disciplines, such as the very prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships, National Endowment for the Arts grants, National Endowment for the Humanities grants, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Research Fellowships, American Academy of Arts and Letters Fellowships, etc. These are generally awarded through the department or college or directly to the faculty member. All but UTEP, UTPA, and UTT will be working over the next few months to provide complete research expenditure data for the FY09-10 year.

Average grade, minimum grade, maximum grade, standard deviation of grades, and average student satisfaction score are only from a sample of courses at each institution. The data originally requested included the following:

    1. Only report data for faculty in the Mechanical Engineering, Finance, History, and Math departments.2. Only report data for one section during the time period. You may determine which semester to report if there are multiple sections over multiple semesters.3. For the student evaluation piece, report the average score for the selected section for the closest evaluation question to “What is your overall rating for this instructor?” 4. The evaluation score and grade distribution should be from the same section. The intent is to limit the final report to one data line per faculty member. Please use an undergraduate section, where available.

  • The University of Texas at Arlington

The University of Texas at Austin

Instructional Faculty value of “N” represents:

Any individual with administrative, staff or research appointments and less than 50% teaching appointment.

    1. In many cases, the total salary in this file does not match the salary information originally reported on UT Arlington’s CBM reports. Looking back at total salary for the year is more accurate than the “snapshot” data collected early in each semester. This is because the snapshot data can only be based on the appointments currently in DEFINE at the time the information is collected. Often, appointments are canceled, added or modified after this point in the semester, rendering the snapshot data less than ideal.

    2. Some of the appointment data was also corrected in this file, based on additional information now available that was not available at the time the CBM reports for each semester were run.

    3. The “rules” we used to assign the “N” or “Y” to the “instructional faculty” column are that we assigned an “N” to:

Any teaching assistant who was not assigned as instructor of record for a course. These individuals have teaching appointments in DEFINE, but their duties are to assist faculty members.

    4. The research expenditure information is left blank for tenured/tenure-track faculty who had no amounts reported by the Office of Research Administration (ORA), because these faculty members could have expenditures for externally-funded projects that was not processed through that office. ORA will be working over the next few months to identify these additional expenditures.

    5. Where there were multiple faculty members identified as co-PIs on a grant, the entire expenditure amount was credited to each of the individuals. ORA will be working over the next few months to determine the correct proportion of expenditures to be attributed to each co-PI for each grant for FY 2009-10.

    6. Benefits information is, as noted, an approximation done by UT System.

Any individuals who are primarily administrators (President, Provost, etc.) Any individuals who had an appointment in late summer 2010 whose appointments were set up to allow the individual to prepare to be a faculty member in the 2010-11 academic year.

Any individuals who are not true faculty members but who are:o Members of the community who voluntarily teach classes or serve on thesis/dissertation committees (they are not paid by The University of Texas at Austin)

  • Benefits information is an approximation determined by UT System.

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC):

The University of Texas at DallasAssignment Rule for “Y” or “N” indicator for instructional faculty.Individuals indicated with a “N” are:

    All other personnel are “Y”.

The research expenditure data available shows equal distribution of funds between all individuals identified as the primary investigator (PI) and co-PIs on grants. We will be working over the next few weeks to better allocate these funds appropriately through interviews with the faculty.

o Staff members who are not paid to teach but are teaching classes based on their skill sets (librarians, program coordinators, health service staff, it personnel, etc.)

ROTC Faculty whose classes and salaries are not considered for state funding.

The research expenditure information left blank reflects that we have no information at this time for these faculty members. We will be working over the next few weeks to get full and accurate research expenditures by contacting faculty about additional research expenditures. We will have this information by the end of the summer.

UTB/TSC faculty loads on this report will not be a direct comparison to faculty at the other UT institutions. Because of its present partnership structure as a community college and university, UTB (the university) and TSC (the community college) report faculty and course data separately to the THECB. For this report, only the faculty listed as 100% appointment have accurate teaching loads reported, as they only provide instruction for the university or UTB. However, many faculty teach both UTB and TSC courses and their data are reported separately to the THECB on the UTB CBM008 and the TSC CBM008 (which are not included in this report).

    1) Administrators (100%) with faculty rank (e.g., the President, Provost, VPs and Deans). Note: some of these faculty may have modest semester credits hours generated (e.g., dissertation hrs).

    2) Staff members whose salary (100%) is allocated to staff functions and whose responsibility is not instruction. Staff may be associated with internships or 1-hr freshmen seminars.3) New Faculty with summer appointments with no teaching responsibility. Note: some of these faculty may have modest semester credits hours generated.

  • Assignment Rule for Research Expenditures.

BenefitsThe following IPEDS HR survey components were utilized in the benefits calculation:

The University of Texas at El Paso

The University of Texas - Pan American

BenefitsThe following IPEDS HR survey components were utilized in the benefits calculation:

UTEP’s data reflects the information we have in the institution’s centralized data systems. The data have been reviewed and verified by the administrative units that maintain the systems. However, the data have not been reviewed by the respective faculty members and minor discrepancies may exist at the individual level.

Per early instruction “If you cannot apportion expenditures by co-PIs, please assign the full amount of expenditure to each co-PI (we realize this will result in overstated expenditures on the whole),” UT Dallas assigned, where there were Co-Principal Investigators, full grant amounts to each person listed on the grant. We are currently reviewing each grant and will modify the data once the review is complete.

Retirement plans (other than Social Security) – Vested - legacy HRS ORP and TRS plans, 790, 791, 792 within 5-years Medical/dental plans – legacy HRS plan type 100 and 105 Group life insurance – legacy HRS plan type 700 Social Security taxes – legacy HRS plan type 540 and 541 Unemployment compensation taxes – legacy plan type 795 Worker's compensation taxes – legacy plan type 796

Any instructor whose primary responsibility is not teaching is listed as “N” under the instructional-faculty column. Any instructor with an administrative appointment and with percent-time-in-instruction equal or less than 50% is identified as an administrator in the faculty file.

    2. The “rules” we used to assign the “N” or “Y” to the “instructional faculty” column were that we assigned an “N” to:

    5. Drs. Dye, Fawaz, and Owen were on paid leave for one long semester during the year.

    1. Instructional Faculty: We assigned an “N” to 1) individuals with 100% administrative appointments, 2) full-time staff members, and 3) instructors who only teach music private lessons.

    2. Research expenditures: We allocated the expenditure amount appropriately. Some data were left blank since we do not have any information for the individuals.

    3. Benefits: We used actual fringe benefits where it was available. The benefits used are 1) retirement plans, 2) medical plans, 3) social security taxes, 4) unemployment compensation taxes, and 5) worker’s compensation taxes. The data was not available for administrative and other staff members. We used 25% of annual salary as an estimate for their benefits.

    4. Instructional appointments: Appointments on UTPB’s report are not the same as those on the CBM reports. Modifications were made to bring greater uniformity between UT System institutions. In the future, we will use the new reporting definitions.

    6. Ms. Ray taught both UTPB and UTMB courses, but UTMB’s SCHs are not shown on this report. She is a program director for UTMB clinical laboratory science transfer program at UTPB.

    1. To determine appropriate allocation of salary to individuals, we checked the appointments of the faculty members in our HR System (DEFINE); if any individuals had full-time administrative, staff or research appointments during the reporting terms and no money was paid for teaching, then we changed the teaching appointments to “0%” and adjusted the total appointments to the appropriate columns. Thus, UTSA’s reporting of appointments is NOT the same as our reporting on the CBM files – this is due to the fact that historically we apparently have NOT been reporting these individuals accurately. So, the changes we made to this file end up making our reporting of individuals what we SHOULD HAVE reported to the CB in the past. For the future, as a side note, we will be reporting this way, not the way we historically have done so.

Any individuals with 100% administrative, staff or research appointments; they had to have 0% teaching or supplemental faculty appointment for the particular terms.

  •         Any teaching assistants who were “not physically present in the classrooms.”

The University of Texas at Tyler

Our deans are only reported on the CBM008 when/if they actually teach a course, so the salaries reported are only partial compensation. Our other administrators' salaries reported on the 008 are only for the additional $$ they are paid for teaching a course(s).

EXPLANATION: For the CBM008, we report the teaching assistants who are not assigned to any class as 0% teaching and their total appointments for that term go to the Item 13B (admin appointment which directly supplements the teaching function). So from the UT System file, we selected all TAs with 0% “Average Teaching” and coded them as “N”. We are calling these TAs as “not physically present in classroom” because they were not assigned to any classes during AY2009‐2010. Identifying TAs who were the “instructor of records” was challenging for us because our Banner data is stored by term and by CRNs to verify “primary instructor.” The UT‐System report is a combined report for 3 terms, so during these terms a TA can be “instructor of record” for one course for one term but not all courses for all terms; we selected TAs who did not teach during any term and assigned an “N.”

    3. The research expenditure information left blank reflects the fact that we have no information for these faculty members – especially those that are co-PIs on grants. We will be working over the next few months to get accurate research expenditures (as accurate as possible) by identifying all co-PIs and then doing interviews or other work to identify the correct proportion of expenditures during the 2009-10 FY for each grant. We will have this by the end of September.

    4. Benefits information is, as noted, an approximation done by UT System.
