2. Problem: Cablevisions On Demandnavigation system is complicated, verbose and suffers from poordefaultsSolution: make navigation system easier tohandle with familiar icons, limit number ofsteps to reach desired result and improveuser experience by making defaults morerelevant. 3. METHODSince Cablevisions nav system is controlled by its remote Ihave included a photo of the remote on each slide.I indicate which buttons are pressed by a yellow highlightover each button depressed. For each step I count thenumber of keystokes (or the number of times the user has topress a button) to get to the next step. Underneath thekeystroke count the total of all keystrokes is counted. The number of steps is indicated on the lower left with themenu level on the lower right. 4. Why do a usability study onCablevision The issues covered in the following slides was discovered while stumbling thru Cablevisions nav system for a episodeof Mad Men that I missed over the Memorial Day holiday. This is not a comprehensive study on Cablevisions nav menu. It is an attempt to offer some usability best practices that can improve the overall functionality of the nav sys. There was no task analysis done to determine user preferences and system metrics or constraints. In a more comprehensive study a 5. OVERVIEW of CURRENT NAVSYSTEMHow many steps/keystrokes do you think it takes toOVERVIEW of CURRENT NAV SYSTEM watch the last episode of Mad Men? The following slides will demonstrate the twisting road one must travel to select a show that was missed. 6. Guide button on remote opens up abovemenuNotice Vertical menu and smart default setting 7. Scroll (press down button) then press SELThis study only concentrates on the On Demand menu. Theother selections were never considered useful (anotherdiscussion for another study). 8. On Demand Menu: Need two screens to show allselections. Not all options are available to all customers, most options arefor premium customers only. This menu could be betterfocused for specific customers. Do regular customers need tosee premium options? 9. Scroll (press down button) then press SEL 10. Free On Demand Menu 11. Scroll (press down button) then press SEL 12. Network (Entertainment) Menu3 screens of selection options. I propose in the following slidesan icon based menu that displays all options on 1 screen that iseasier to understand 13. Scroll (press down button) then press SEL 14. AMC Free On Demand Menu (text-based)Slide #26 shows proposed menu layout with iconswith latest show option on one screen and one clickto play 15. Scroll (press down button) then press SELAlphabetical ordering seems rational, but should options belisted in order of relevancy or popularity? Task analysis couldbe done to determine if valid. 16. Mad Men MenuDefault setting should be from latest episode to lest latest indescending order, not the other way around like current default.Again a task analysis could be performed to determine if myassumption is correct 17. Scroll (press down button) then press SELMore keystrokes. dont forget if you accidentally select thewrong button you could maybe tap 30 buttons before getting towhere you want to!! 18. Very Poor Default! Why is the default nexttitleIf you made it this far, why is the default next title and not playwhen I choose the episode I wanted to play in last screen!(Frustrating) 19. Scroll (press down button) then press SELSo it takes 24 keystrokes and 14 steps to watch the latestepisode of Mad Men thats enough steps to make me mad. 20.
