This Week’s Speaker; John Morrison

Topic; CONNECTING INTELLIGENCE for a SAFER BETTER WORLD

HOW can building emotional intelligence build a safer better world?

According to Karl Albrech Emotional Intelligence can be definedas self-insight and the ability to effectively respond to experience.Evidence of high Emotional Intelligence is where one is self-awareof their failings or limitations and can use this awareness to moreeffectively respond to environment.

Research suggests that Emotional Intelligence in the Australianworkplace is low. The average manager and worker are strugglingto have the tough conversations on performance, disagreements and relationship issues.

This is further supported by other research which indicates many workers do not feel safe enough to speakup in the workplace when they see unsafe work practices or witness bullying and sexual harassment. These

are complex issues however there are some solutions.

One solution is to help more workers develop their Emotional Intelligence. If we can develop workplace cul-tures where people are accepted for who they are, and are encouraged to work on themselves (Self-awareness) and feel included in the bigger picture of being part of a team which is making a difference(Team Success), not only will we get more committed workers (Committed Team Players) we will get saferworkplaces. The Graphic describes part of the solution.

It is what we learn from others that leads to our greatest lessons and of course our greatest victories. It willtake time and effort but we cannot afford to look for short term solutions. It is too important to do other-wise.

For things to change in our workplaces we must change. But first, let’s put that i-phone aside for a periodeach day because we don’t want to prove Einstein correct from his quote 70 years ago: “I fear the day thattechnology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots” Here are some simple strategies for developing emotional intelligence:

1. Place a high value on relationships and follow up2. Stay connected with your tribe or community group.3. See things with new eyes with gratitude and empathy4. Know thyself – work on self and help others do the same5. Give of yourself to people and causes that you are passionate about*

* If you are an uncle, aunt, grandparent, make time to truly connect with the young from your tribe. Withtoday’s parents being so busy kids need that extra emotional and social connection more than ever before.
