Presidents Report
It is almost June, and this Rotary year will soon come to an endand a new Rotary year will begin.
It has been a busy and exciting year in the Rotary Club ofBeaumaris, and most of what has been happening has beenrecorded for us all to see by our industrious In Gear and web-site/internet man, David Lea.
At our last meeting, David spoke to the members on where weare with the all things Internet related, and where we areheading. There was obviously a lot of interest in David’s talk,as there wasn’t enough time for all the questions! See furtherin In Gear for a summary
David does an amazing amount of work behind the sceneswith producing our news bulletin every week, as well as work-ing hard to keep our website current to provide members, andthose interested persons outside our club, with all our clubnews. He has also initiated a RCOB FaceBook page, which we
should all have a look at to see what is going on “from a dif-ferent angle”.
However he can’t produce a newsletter or put information onthe website or FaceBook page unless we give him the infor-mation in the first place! So please everybody pass on any-thing you think could be of interest, ideally with a photo ortwo, so we can share what is happening with others.
One of our charter members, Malcolm Parks, recently returnedfrom a trip to Swaziland where he witnessed the terrible ex-tent of poverty, starvation and the tragedy that has resultedfrom the AIDS epidemic. Malcolm told us about an organisa-
tion, Possible Dreams International, which is doing amazingwork there in an attempt to alleviate these problems. The or-ganisation was founded by a Melbourne doctor, Maithri Goo-netilleke, who migrated to Australia from Sri Lanka with hisfamily when he was six years of age. I am sure we can assistthis worthwhile project in some way. Checkout their website:http://www.possibledreamsinternational.org
We have a couple of exciting fund raising events coming upthat I hope you are inviting all your friends to – the film nightthis week and the Jonathon Usher night on 30th July (see de-tails inside this edition).
Fund raising also has a sausage sizzle at Bunnings in Mentoneon Monday 17th June. It would be great to have some mem-bers who haven’t done this sort of thing before to put their

This Week’s Speaker; David LeaTopic; RCOB on the WWW•Website
The RCOB website was overhauled in early 2013with new look and feel. This incorporates seven ban-ner photos which rotate over time on each page.Usage is steady at about 250 – 300 page viewsper month with the bulk of usage occurring followingcirculation of In Gear. More detailed analysis sug-gests that about 20 persons use the site on averageeach week mainly to access the High Definition copyof In Gear.
This strategy has resulted in the website getting atop positioning when “Rotary” and “Beaumaris” are
entered into the Google search engine.
Up to date content provision from Directors is muchimproved over the last 12 months. Most aspects ofthe website are up-to-date, particularly comparedto many other service club sites. At this time we arenot sure there is a better template available withinWP to meet our needs; particularly one which onlycosts $17 per annum to host!
Some content does need an overhaul and this is
scheduled following Changeover. Feedback frommembers on ideas for changes in this July updateare most welcome
Why FacebookSocial Media is the all pervasive communication toolfor our future members. We have to learn to walkwith it now so we can run with it in the future. WhileFaceBook (FB) may get replaced our experience willbe transposable to its successor (Google+ ??).•Wehave had anRCOB FB page for ~ 18 Mo. It hasabout 20 friends, not much content; and is just not
good enough. The existing page used personal for-mat; need to use specific format to provide betterfunctionality for RCOB needs. A new page has beenstarted;
https://www.facebook.com/beaumarisrotary
Other page of interest include;RI
https://www.facebook.com/rotary
District 9810
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rotary-District-9810/264557880313084
However the page will only serve any usfull purposeif it seen as active and attractive; it must representthe best of the club amd Rotary. Therefore it mustinclude; RCOB photos, news, upcoming events as well
as powerful RI media.
The page must be added to every week, withoutfail. This is easy to do but ideally needs multiplemembers placing content on line. Editorial control, beyond simple guidelines, is not necessary. Ourgoal should be to have at least one person fromeach Avenue of Service regularly uploading contentand a large number of club members using and pro-moting the page.
We would expect that as the club evolves the value
and use of the FB page (and its successors) will alsoevolve in the same way that email and e-versions ofIn Gear and Annual Reports replaced envelopes, stamps and paper versions.
A set of instructions on how to set up a FB page willbe circulated to members with this edition of InGear. We only expect that members will sign up toFB if they are comfortable to do so but that overtime the proportion of members will who have willincrease naturally.
