Submission of Internal Assignment

August 2016 Examination

The Internal Assignment for Preliminary, Section A & B will be required to be submitted by

those students appearing for August 2016 exam. All eligible students are hereby directed

to submit the completed Internal Assignment for the subjects they are appearing for

August 2016 exam on or before 30th June 2016.

Assignment is important aspect of examination. It is obvious that if you get good

marks in assignment your overall percentage shall improve. The weightage for the Internal Assignment will be 20% of the total marks in respective subject. Internal Assignments are attached below.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INTERNAL ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION

1. Please write carefully your Name, Student membership number, Subject name on the each Subject Assignment.

2. Assignments must be hand written on A4 size paper and should be submitted on or

before 30th June 2016. 3. The fees for Internal Assignment will be Rs.100/- per subject. This is to be paid

through Demand Draft drawn in favour of Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, payable at Mumbai and sent alongwith Assignment. Write your name and membership number on the back side of the Demand Draft.

4. Solve all the questions and all the sub questions (do not leave any questions or sub questions). Detailed answers are expected

5. The paper should be written neat and clean. Leave left margin, top margin and

bottom margin. Write up should be legible.

6. The expected length of answer shall depend upon the nature of the question.

7. Answers shall include the definition, Diagrams, Tables, examples, etc. depending on the nature of question.

8. IE005 Engineering drawing & Computer Graphics assignment, student may use

drawing sheet.

9. Content that has been directly copied from the Internet will NOT be accepted.

10. Assignments that have been copied and shared among student(s) will be

automatically rejected and such students are liable for disqualification.

11. Ensure that your answers are according to the marks allocated. Students are advised to check their Assignments thoroughly before submitting the same.

More than 650 million people in almost 40 countries suffer from water scarcity. Among them particularly, 36 countries face extremely high water stress, including several countries in the Sub-Saharan region, Middle East, Indian deserts contributes to the looming crisis from African and Asian continents. Due to water shortage, the energy production and economic development in India and China has been affected seriously. Water scarcity is very severe in fast developing country like India, along with decreased energy production, the water quality with respect to chemical and biological contamination. The water shortage in India, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, is very common as the tropical monsoon fail to pour a rain on the seasonal basis. In the USA water shortage is very common (e.g., western parts of arid desert zone) especially from the past 10 years.

Water supplies decreased due to the drying up of streams, decline in the ground water levels due to the excess pumping, chemical contamination and increased drought conditions. Among European Union, the water scarcity hits several countries among them Spain, France, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, Czech and some others are affected while Croatia is least water stressed country. The aquifers in Belgium, France have been over exploited and contaminated by chemicals. Due to climate change and decrease in groundwater level related water stress makes Australian economy hit during the past 2-5 years.

Most water (97%) is in the oceans, which cover 71% of the Earth's surface. 3% is freshwater, two-thirds of which is tied up as ice in glaciers and at the poles. This leaves approximately 1% as freshwater in rivers, lakes, the atmosphere and in

groundwater.

However, with demand rising rapidly due to a growing global population with expectations of higher living standards and resource-intensive farming, that 1% is under threat. Climate change is adding to the problem because our weather patterns have become less predictable and more pronounced. While a number of areas are experiencing periods of prolonged drought, the rain that falls in some other areas is heavier. This leads to flooding without sufficiently replenishing groundwater stocks.

Hotel companies have both a strong commercial and moral imperative for addressing water use. Cost is a clear factor: water accounts for 10% of utility bills in many hotels. Most hotels pay for the water they consume twice - first by purchasing fresh water and then by disposing of it as waste water. According to the UK's Environment Agency, depending on their water efficiency, hotels can reduce the amount of water consumed per guest per night by up to 50% compared with establishments with poor performance in water consumption. The moral reasons are equally compelling: water is a scare resource in many resorts around the world so hotels have a responsibility not to use more than necessary; in rural or remote areas it ensures that local residents are not deprived of their essential supply; and by reducing the amount of waste-water that needs to be treated, this lessens the risk of water pollution.

According to the latest research conducted by SIWI, almost 20 % of the world's population live in areas of physical water scarcity. A water scarce region is one where water resources development is "approaching or has exceeded sustainable limits" and "more than 75% of river flows are withdrawn for agriculture, industry, and domestic purposes". By 2030, the world might face a 40% global demand/supply gap of accessible, reliable water supply for economic development. The private sector is a major water user and often completely dependent on water for production and service delivery.
