The Hoosier Chatter September 2018

Hello Indiana, Where did August go? It grew wings and flew! September starts the months with “ber” in them but hopefully we can still get out and camp before the big “Brrr” shows up. Speaking of camping in September, we have the Fall Invitational September 21-23 at Cornerstone Campground in New Castle, IN. You will need to call and make your own arrangements directly with the campground, if you have not done so by this reading please do so soon. (Look elsewhere here in the Chatter for info on registering) Thanks Ed & Angie Shaneyfelt for hosting a won-derful Summer camp out at Salamonie Lake! Hope your booboo heals up quickly Angie! Also, Thank you Scott Serbousek for coming and for giving an awesome presentation on how to set up and volunteer at a booth at a RV show and also good advice on what to do at a get acquainted meeting with the people who signed up to join our organization. We have several folks that are planning to do just this very thing come February 2019 in Indianapolis. So, if you would be interested in helping man a booth at the RV show please contact Chris & Denise Weiss or Brad & Stacey Davis. They will gladly show you what they have learned from Scott’s presentation! In addition, will give you a schedule of when your help is needed and very much appreciated! We had the honor of having two Royalties camp with us at Salamonie, our FCRV Teen Queen Katie Kurburski from Michigan and our own Indiana Teen Queen/ FCRV Miss Congeniality Macey Stuckwisch and her Mom Misty Stuckwisch & Grandparents Chet& Sherry Nolan. In addition, visiting & camping with us from Michigan were Daren & Jeannie Woods. Ron & Thelma Standiford, Ed & Bonnie

Dear Fellow Campers, As most of you know, Christina fell and broke her ankle at the end of July. She had surgery a few weeks later. We had to miss the Summer camp out at Salamonie because she is unable to put any weight on her right ankle, also at that time she was having to keep the ankle elevated above her heart. Well after surgery and a week of recovery, our chapter camp out at Cornerstone was looming. What to do. Christi-na still could not navigate getting into the truck safe-ly so taking the 5th wheel out was out of the question. You know us campers though, we hate to miss an outing, so we decided to book one of the cabins at Cornerstone. Let us tell you, the cabin was a different experi-ence. It pretty much is like camping in a tent with solid roof and walls. Though clean, the cabin con-sists of only a double bed and two sets of bunk beds. One positive thing for us, we could bring our four legged companions, though they had to stay on the porch. The beds were reminiscent of summer camp from our youth. The mattress though present, felt like sleeping directly on the wood frame. That was our experience with the cabin itself. Though that was a little tough, we did get to spend the weekend in the great outdoors. On Friday even-ing, our group had dinner off the grill. On Saturday, spent a long time on the “porch” of Gilly’s. It rained but was not too hot. In fact, had to bring out the blanket. All in all, it was a good weekend. If our unit is un-available in future for any reason we will utilize the cabins again (though will bring a mattress pad with more fluff). Till we see you in September, Richard & Christina Lucas

The Fall Invitational is com-ing soon! You can still bring plastic caps, tabs, and soup and box top labels for our spon-sored collections. We can have a book ex-change if people are interested (if not, we can read all our old books.) At the summer camp out there were 18 walkers but no dogs because dogs were not allowed at the beach. We will plan on walking at next camp out again, so don't forget to pack some walking shoes. That is all for now so see you at the next camp out.

We will have a retiree rally September 19th and 20th, 2018. It will be at Cornerstone Campground right before the Fall Invitational. You will need to call the campground to make your own reservations (765-987-8700). We will plan on a carry-in one day and to go out to eat one night (or see how many people are there and see what everybody wants to do.) Patti Thieme

When I retired I thought it’d be A life of ease and luxury.

Sleep and read, do what I wish Hunt and ride, play golf and fish. But I found out, to my surprise

‘Twas but a wolf in sheep disguise. Now it’s sweep and mop, and wax the floor.

Paint and polish to improve décor. I love her heaps, but it’s plain to see My wife has retired instead of me.

Shea—good having you all as well. Carl & Deena Felver, Carl you evidently took awesome care of Deena that she was able to mend quickly enough to come camping! Mike & Marilyn Rausch it had been awhile camping with you and so we enjoyed having you camp too! Stacey & Kim Shaneyfelt, Ed & Deena’s brother & sister-in-law camped as well, along with all the rest of our Indiana group; we would like to say “thanks to you all” for being a part of that wonderful weekend! We missed Rick & Christina Lucas since Christina had to have surgery on her foot she had injured in an untimely accident with a trashcan, the trashcan won. Also not able to camp with us was Francis Idelwine & his family, Francis is undergoing Chemo & Radi-ation treatments for cancer in a tonsil; please keep those prayers going up for Francis! Looking forward to seeing many of you at Corner-stone… Until then be safe in your travels! Cindy James

Chaplain’s Corner

The Hoosier Chatter September 2018

We want to thank CJ Smerdel from CMF Interna-tional for being with us at our Indiana State Summer Campout. CJ and Kim are preparing to serve in church planting in Worcester England. CJ spoke to us about probably the greatest and most quoted sermon ever given, the Sermon on the Mount, given by Jesus and found in Matthew 5-7. CJ broke it down and went through the whole ser-mon. Some of the most quoted parts are the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus’ sermon also covers many other thoughts that are often quoted. Jesus touched on anger, lust, divorce, oaths, retaliation, love for enemies, giving to the needy, fasting, where to put our treasures, not to be anxious, judging oth-ers, the golden rule and other topics. After CJ’s sermon he and Kim talked about what they planned to do on their mission trip. I want to wish my wife, Nancy, a happy birth-day. Also my daughter, Christina Lucas, and her “twin by other parents”, Tammy Slicer, who share her birth date. I also wish Christina and Tammy a speedy recovery. Christina is recovering from ankle surgery and Tammy undergoing radiation therapy. Melvin Coy

Sometimes a dish served at our pitch-in gatherings stands out so much that we want to make it again. We invite you to send us your outstanding recipes to share with other campers!

Salamonie Lake August 10-12, 2018

Hosted by Ed and Angie Shaneyfelt

Of course, there was lots to eat, including a pitch-in breakfast and dinner!

Ed and Angie provided fun on the water with a pon-toon ride and tubing for the more adventuresome!

The C.A.M.P. walk headed down to the beach. Weather was perfect for all activities!

Thanks to Scott Serbousek for his presentation on how to introduce people to FCRV at camper shows and how to encourage them to join the fun at the follow-up meetings. We are all responsible for growing our membership!

Thank you to Ed and An-gie Shaneyfelt for plan-ning our Summer cam-pout and providing the pontoon boat for summer fun on the lake! We had a wonderful turnout, and enjoyed all the activities, food, and fellowship of the weekend. The weath-er cooperated with no rain and moderate temps. We enjoyed the presence of royalty: our National Teen Queen Katie Kybur-ski and our own State Queen and National Miss Congeniality Macey!

DASAT MOMENT by Marilyn Rausch

Reviewing a private website dedicated to provid-ing the unique laws in each state of the United States regarding vehicular traffic, I found one sur-prising fact about Indiana: There are no laws in In-diana for use of bicycle helmets. (Ed. Note: since head injuries are a major cause of injury and death in bicycle accidents, it is still strongly recommended that helmets designed to protect from head and faci-al injury be worn whenever bicycles are being rid-den on private as well as public property. Looking further, I found some credible infor-mation on the website of local attorneys Cline, Far-rell, Christie, & Lee. Note that this is not an en-dorsement of the practice itself, but just a promulga-tion of what should be some useful information.

Here are 8 Indiana bicycle laws you should be aware of:

1. Every person riding the bicycle must have a properly attached seat and not be carrying any-thing that prevents them from keeping both hands on the handlebars. This also means no texting, shaving or eating while riding a bike. (Indiana Codes 9-21-11-3 and 9-21-11-7)

2. Anyone riding on a roadway or bike path after sunset and before sunrise must have a white light that can be seen 500 feet in front of them, and a red light or reflector that can be seen 500 feet behind them. These items can usually be found at your local bike shop or sporting goods store. (Indiana Code 9-21-11-9)

3. No cyclists may ever attach themselves or their bike to a motorized street car or vehicle. This may look like fun to some people, but it’s ex-tremely dangerous and illegal. (Indiana Code 9-21-11-5)

4. This next rule is somewhat unknown, but very important. Every bicycle must have brakes that are able to make the tires skid on dry, clean, level pavement. If your bicycle needs new brake pads, they are also usually available at your local bike shop or sporting goods store. (Indiana Code 9-21-11-10)

5. Another fairly unknown rule is that every bicycle must be equipped with an audible device, such as a bell, that can be heard 100 feet away. While this rule does not seem to be strictly enforced, it is always important for cyclists to warn people near them that they are approaching in order to prevent serious injury to themselves and oth-ers. Cyclists may not use sirens or whistles as their audible device. (Indiana Code 9-21-11-8)

6. Everyone riding a bicycle on the roadway must use the proper hand and arm signals to indicate when they are changing lanes or turning. These signals can be found in the Indiana Driver’s Man-ual. (Indiana Code 9-21-8-28)

7. When riding with friends on a roadway, there can be no more than 2 bikes riding side-by-side. (Indiana Code 9-21-11-6)

8. While drinking and biking may seem safer be-cause the cyclist is not driving a half-ton, all-metal, motorized wrecking ball, the legal blood alcohol (B.A.C.) limit while riding a bike is the same as if driving a car, .08. (Indiana Code 9-30-5-1)
