Explosion hazardous areas (according to GOST, IEC and PUE – Electrical Installation Code)
What is a hazardous area?In terms of petrochemical industry, a hazard-ous area may be defined as «an object loca-tion where ambient atmosphere is likely to contain highly inflammable gases or vapors under normal operating conditions” .
In order to prevent ambient air-gas mixture combustion due to an accidental spark or contact with a heated surface, special measures are taken for all electric devices to be installed in hazardous areas . These special precautions should be considered as protective only un-der standard operating conditions; in case of emergency (such as an explosion or detonation) they are not expect-ed to ensure the same safety level .
Explosion or fire mostly occurs as a result of combination of three key factors referred to as a “risk triangle” . To make the explosive material catch fire, all three factors are to be available .
Probability of explosion hazardous gas and vapor presence
Properties of explosion hazardous atmosphere
Zone 0 – explosion hazardous mixture leaks permanently or for a long time
Zone 1 – explosion hazardous mixture leakage of grade 1 – appears from time to time or occasionally under the standard mode of equipment operation
Zone 2 – explosion hazardous mixture leakage of grade 2 – does not appear under the standard mode of equipment operation or appears for a short time

3. When selecting a heating cable, the following factors are to be taken into consideration: maximum allowable temperature for the given cable type, cable heat output at maintained temperature, maximum maintenance temperature for the cable, correction factor of power supply voltage and heated area classification as well as probable availability of chemically active substances affecting the cable (see technical data sheets of the specific cables and accessories for details) .
In order to choose the type and model of a heating cable correctly, it is necessary to carry out thermal calculation . The calculation shall be performed for each separate pipeline .
1. Heat losses from the pipeline surface are estimated . The calculation may be carried out as per method exemplified below using a heat loss calculation table, which contains standard estimated heat losses from the pipeline surface with regard to the pipeline diameter, temperature difference between the pipeline and the environment and heat insulation thickness . The calculations presented in the table are made under the following conditions: heat insulation with heat conductivity factor equal to 0,05 W/m•°С is used .
2. If the conditions change, it is necessary to introduce the following corrections:

STANDARD ESTIMATION OF HEAT LOSS FROM THE SURFACE OF PIPELINE

e
The primary purpose of the TEPLOMAG electrical heating systems is the maintenance of the required temperature of the heated pipelines by means of heat loss compensation . However, if scheduled or emergency repair works are necessary, the power supply may be switched off .
When disconnected from power supply, the pipeline heating system does not compensate the heat loss into the environment . The interruption of power supply will cause the pumps to stop as well . Liquid pumping will be brought to a standstill .
The pipeline will start gradual cooling . Pipelines filled with liquid and covered with heat insulation feature essential thermal inertia . The more the diameter of the pipe, and the higher the allowed cooling degree, the higher the thermal inertia is .
Operating team and maintenance department need to know the maximum allowed time period of pipeline heating system power outage . The below tables present the results of cooling time calculations made for a number of standard pipelines with drift diameter from 50 to 400 mm . Cases are considered when the pipeline is completely filled with water or oil . The pipes are covered with heat insulation made of mineral wool with the heat conductivity factor equal to 0,05 W/m•°С . The input data used in calculation are given in Table 1 .

Table 2 illustrates the results of pipe cooling time calculation, if it is filled with medium density oil, depending on the ambient air temperature . Heat insulation thickness and its density are stated along with pipe dimensions . Oil temperature at the moment of power supply outage makes up 50 °C . It is assumed that the minimum temperature to which oil can be cooled is 20 °C . The Table shows the dependencies of the pipe cooling time both on characteristics of pipes and heat insulation and on ambient air temperature . Naturally, the higher the ambient air temperature, the longer the period of pipe cooling down .

Table 3 exemplifies the dependence of the cooling time on the heat insulation thickness . The calculation is performed for pipeline 150 mm in diameter filled with oil . The heat insulation thickness was varying from 30 to 60 mm . The twofold increase of heat insulation thickness leads to twofold increase of cooling time . This method can be used to prolong the pipeline cooling time .
Table 4 presents the time periods of cooling down of the pipeline filled with water . The water temperature in a heated pipeline in cold season is usually maintained at 5–8 °C, water cooling down below 2 °C is not acceptable . Structure of the Table 4 is similar to that of Table 2 . In spite of the fact that heat content of 1 kg of water is 2,6 times more than that of 1 kg of oil, the smaller allowable range of temperature fall causes the decrease in allowable cooling time periods . .

1. Heating cores of copper wires
2. Insulation of organic-silicon rubber
3. Tinned copper braid
4. Outer jacket of organic-silicon rubber
FeaturesConstructionThe heating cable structurally includes three parallel heating cores made of copper wire insulated with organ-ic-silicon rubber; the insulation is covered with tinned copper wire braid and organic-silicon rubber outer jacket .
Heating system arrangementSize of the heating conductors is selected to provide the desired power output for a specified length of the circuit . Heating cables are connected directly to three-phase power network or, if necessary, to a special step-up trans-former .
Enhanced efficiency and safetyConsiderable heated surface of the flat heating cable leads to decrease of operating temperatures in compari-son with similar heaters featuring round-shape conduc-tors thus improving safety and efficiency of the heating cable and prolonging its service life . Using organic-silicon rubber as an insulator, which is capable to maintain its electric and mechanical properties within the wide range of temperature, enables to get power output of the tape up to 50 W/m .
InstallationLLS cables may be laid on a pipe straightly or spirally . As for pre-insulated pipelines, the cables are as a rule placed in conduit elements fitted to a trunk pipe inside its thermal insulation .
The heating cable is available both as convenient for installation lengths for series connection on site and as ready-made heating sections TMTE . Cables to be installed at power supply point are delivered equipped with cold leads .
Minimum supply wiring costThe system application minimizes the required number of power supply points and, thus, reduces cost of power supply network arrangement .

Maximum pipe / workpiece temperatureHeating cable surface temperature shall not exceed the maximum withstand temperatures of its constructional materials or that specified for the temperature classifica-tion (for installations in explosion hazardous areas) . This is ensured by limiting of power output of the heating cable depending on the pipe or workpiece temperature to a safe level either by design calculation or by means of tem-perature control system .
For worst heat transfer conditions, the temperature of the pipe should be limited to the following levels:

Features and application fieldFlush-joint heating sections are supplied to the site object as finished products ready for immediate use in accordance with the project . Absence of explicit coupling at the junction of the heating and current-carrying conductors is a distinguishing feature of this type of section . Insulation, braid and outer jacket of the section have undisturbed solid and uniform construction thus ensuring high reliability of the heating section .
Insulation and outer jacket are manufactured of fluoro-polymers, thus enabling the section to withstand high operating temperature (up to 180 °C) and resist exposure to chemically aggressive environment and oil products .
Standard sections have linear output of 40 and 30 W/m . Sections with other linear output value are manufactured on request or in accordance with the project .
Complete readiness of the section for installation and uni-formity of the external dimensions essentially facilitate the installation process .
Medium temperature flush-joint heating sections are the best solution for heating of pipelines, tanks and process equipment containing fuel oil, bitumen, paraffin and other high-viscous substance as well as for heating of pump station floors .

Field of applicationInduction-resistive heating system (IRHS) or SKIN-system is designed to maintain the product temperature, protect long trunk pipelines against freezing and ensure their start heating .
SKIN-system is the only one, which is capable to heat a pipeline run of up to 30 km long (without any accompa-nying network) . This system can be also used for heating trunk pipelines of an unlimited length provided accom-panying supply network be arranged .
Principle of operationThe heating element of the system consists of an induction-resistive heater (IR-heater) with the outer diameter of 20–45 mm and the wall thickness of at least 3 .0 mm; there is an insulated copper or aluminum induction-resistive conductor (IR-conductor) with cross section of 10–30 mm2 placed in it .
The IR-conductor is electrically connected to the IR-heater at the end of a heating run while AC voltage is supplied between the conductor and the IR-heater at the run head; the voltage value is calculated basing on the required heat output and the heated run length .
Currents of the IR-conductor and the IR-heater have opposite directions and thus skin and proximity effects originate in the system . As a result, the IR-heater current flows in the inner layer close to the inner surface of the IR-heater and there is no voltage available on the outer surface of the IR-heater .
The IR-conductor is non-magnetic (made of copper, aluminum), thus, it does not feature any noticeable skin effect and AC flows throughout the whole cross section of the IR-conductor .
The main heat-producing element of IRHS is the tube, which produces up to 80 % of the system output .

Purpose PT-410 electronic controller is designed for temperature measurement and preset temperature maintenance control . Its application range includes industrial electric heating of pipelines, vessels, various volume capacities, etc . Also domestic application of the controller is possible for heating of pipes and capacities . The device ensures a possibility of temperature measurement by means of measuring sensors of thermal resistance type .
Operating principleOutput device control logic ensures optimal heating maintenance process . The temperature maintenance method is “proportional type control” . The user sets a con-troller performance characteristic by entering two tem-peratures and percentages of the total system output corresponding to them (-10 °C, 100 % and +80 °C, 10 % in an example shown in the picture) . The controller calcu-lates its temperature-power curve basing on these data:
Then the device is automatically switched to the temper-ature stabilization mode . As a result, the pipe temperature is kept within the preset range irrespective of changes in ambient air temperature with energy consumption being as low as practicable .
FeaturesThe controller features high temperature measurement accuracy together with high interface immunity of the temperature measurement channels . Thanks to the above, the device may be conveniently used when the sensors are removed from the device within a distance of up to 100 m, at that 8 sensor types may be used .
Application The device is used stationary, along with ambient air and heated object temperature sensors (optionally, at discre-tion) . During the device installation it is necessary to input lower and upper limits for the temperature maintenance range using 4 control buttons located on the front panel . These settings are enough for normal operation of PT-410 controller .

FeaturesALT (ACP) is a panel for automatic load transfer . It is aimed at resuming power supply to users due to automatic switching over to second (redundant) entry if power sup-ply to the first one (main) fails . The system usually auto-matically returns to initial state, when normal power sup-ply at main entry is resumed (priority of the first entry) . The main entry is usually a fixed power mains Un = 380 V, f = 50 Hz . Fixed power mains or diesel-electric engine may serve as a redundant entry . ALT panels are widely used at industrial and civil construction sites, cellular communication stations and others; ALT panels are also used to feed power to sites, where maintenance and re-pair operations take place . The panel automatic equip-ment has an up-to-date element base . The most com-monly used completing unit of the control circuit is fully functional phase control relay; a special controller is used less frequently . These devices control over load-bearing elements: contactors, circuit breakers or automatic mo-tor-driven switches . Equipment made by Hager, АВВ, Schneider Electric, Siemens is used .
