Maggie Van Zalen Called to ministry with IJM

This Wednesday, March 16 following the Faith Night Dinner, you are welcome to come and hear from Maggie Van Zalen talk about her work with IJM. International Justice Mission (IJM) has been working in Kampala, Uganda for over 12 years and their offices in Uganda focus on combating the issue of property grabbing. In Uganda, widows are at risk upon their husband's death of having their land and home stolen. IJM has made significant progress fighting against this crime and in improving the local justice system. This June, after my graduation from Saint Mary's in May, I will be leaving for Kampala, Uganda to serve with International Justice Mission for a year. As IJM is a non-profit, my year working for them is unpaid, thus I am gifting their mission a year of service. To fund my year, I am needing to raise $20,000 to cover all of my expenses including travel, food, and safe housing for the year, with any additional funds raised exceeding my needs contributed to IJM. I'm very excited about this opportunity to serve with IJM and feel incredibly blessed to have the ability to go. I know that there will be aspects of this year that will be incredibly challenging, but I also know that this is where God has called me for the next year. I trust that God will use this time to bring me closer to Him and my prayer for the year is that I will have new discoveries of God's deep love for this broken world. Here is the link for the form that needs to be filled out to give to church on Maggie’s behalf. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lut71NWZjIeArKu69aOWE3yoCFyBPtD6_-DTrMt125s/edit For more information on IJM's work or how to donate, clink on the following link for my fundraising site: https://www.youcaring.com/maggie-vanzalen-500237. *All monies donated for the Faith Night Dinner this Wednesday, March 16 will go to support Maggie’s ministry with IJM.

Council Notes from March 2016

1. We have currently received 62% of what is budgeted at this time, which means we are about $53,000 behind. 2. The memberships of Conlin and Jamie Britton were transferred to Faith from Second Reformed of Zeeland and Niekerk CRC of Holland, respectively. 3. Discussions were held on forming committees to recommend a Kid's Hope director, study ministry shares, and form new vision and mission statements. 4. Council approved a request from the Free Health Clinic to convert a room in the Outlet they are not using into a room for dental examinations. The Operations team must review the plans and council will revisit the usage of the room in two years. 5. The nominating process for electing council members was set in motion. Council members who are retiring are Deacons Febe Gomez, Ali Haveman and Dennis Spoelman, and elders Nancy Haveman and Fronse Smith.

Additional Announcements L.I.F.T. groups are scheduled to meet Sunday. The sanctuary during LENT - As music, prayer and liturgy are designed to lead you into worship, so is the sanctuary design. Our hope is that the color and design enriches your worship experience and focuses you on a particular season of the church calendar. During Lent we are exploring, experiencing and enjoying how deep, wide and vast is the depth of God’s love. Look for the red ribbon representing love, that runs through the purples draping the cross. Purple can symbolize pain, suffering, and therefore mourning and penitence. It is the liturgical color for the Season of Lent. We wait in expectation for the resurrection. Faith Night Dinner menu for Wednesday, March 16: We are going green! St Patrick's Day green! Mark & Jane will become Irish and will prepare a fine traditional dinner of their Irish ancestors. Corned beef & cabbage, Irish potatoes, soda bread and green water. Free dinner if you wear a kilt! Erin go Bragh! Men's Softball - Contact Chuck Commeret ([email protected]) if you are interested in playing softball for Faith. The team will play in the Zeeland Recreation League on Thursday nights starting May 5 and go until July 28. Please let him know by Sunday, March 27. Thank you! Cadets and GEMS Pinewood Derby is Wednesday, March 23rd from 6:45 - 8:15. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend! Kids have put a lot of work into their cars and are really excited. There will be light refreshments following the race. CROP WALK-Please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 23 or Sunday, April 24. You can be part of Holland/Zeeland's 36th CROP Hunger Walk. The walk raises awareness and funds for global and local hunger agencies. Learn more and raise funds online at: www.hollandhunger.org. Pastor Enrique and Febe are organizing a mission trip to Campeche, Mexico this June 15 – June 23. More information will be coming soon. Please contact Pastor Enrique with any questions. WALKERS - we have walkers who will be leaving church each week at 11.15 for a walk. If you are not a runner but would enjoy walking with this group, please join us! They will meet in the foyer and leave at 11.15 and return to church before 12. This is a great way to deepen friendships while enjoying the great outdoors and getting exercise! FAITHFULLY FIT – Join us as we walk/run the Tulip Time 5K as a Faith community on Saturday May 7 at 8am. Training will be on Sundays 11:25-11:45am and on Wednesdays 5:15-5:45pm. Enroll for the race at www.tuliptime.com/events/run, Select Group/Team “Faith CRC” and click “Join” to sign up. Enter Promo Code “faith16” for a discount. The discounted price for sign-up will be available thru April 30. Email Rachel Baggech at [email protected] for a Faith Church T-Shirt. On Monday, March 14, Holland Christian Middle School will be hosting an Internet Safety talk at the HCHS auditorium starting at 7 pm. This event will feature Mr. Dan Landstra from Unity Christian High School, who has become a local expert and speaker on the Internet, its pitfalls, as well as safety and hope for families. Children who are in grades 6-12 are also invited, as this will ensure hearing a common message, and provide a wonderful opportunity to digest and discuss the message during the car ride home. Given the mature nature of the material discussed, students younger than sixth grade are discouraged from attending, but all parents are welcome.

Holland Christian Schools welcomes and encourages children to explore, create, and discover so they can be innovative builders of God's Kingdom. We invite families to partner with us in the adventure! 2016-17 Kindergarten enrollment begins February 3 and preschool enrollment, including 3-year-old, 4-year-old, and Junior Kindergarten classes, begins February 10. For questions, please contact Courtney Lampen at (616) 820-2804 or [email protected].
